The Jacks' Residence -- 7:00am
Brenda was sitting in the rocker in the nursery feeding Jillian as her mind raced. She could not stop thinking about what Stone had said to her in her dream yesterday. "They need you. They are suffering so. Help them ease their pain." She was beginning to think she had become Kevin Costner in a corn field in Iowa.
Brenda looked down at the baby. Jillian was happy and healthy and had a family giving her all the love she could ever need. Unfortunately, not everyone was as lucky. Brenda's thoughts went to Jimmy and the other children like him who had to be separated from their families due to illness. It just wasn't fair. Everyone was suffering.
Jillian had fallen asleep so Brenda had put her back in the cradle. Brenda simply watched her sleep. She was beautiful and Brenda still was amazed at the love she felt for her daughter. She knew there was nothing she would not do to keep Jillian safe and happy.
Brenda quietly walked back into the master suite and had found Jax awake. She climbed back into bed next to him. "I'm sorry I woke you."
Jax pulled her closer to him. "I missed you. I hate not having you in my arms. This bed gets so cold and lonely."
Brenda smiled. "I know. I feel the same way."
"Are you okay?"
"Yes, I'm fine."
Jax kissed the top of her head. "Are you still thinking about Stone?"
"Yes, I am still trying to figure out what his message meant."
"I am sure it will come to you."
Brenda placed a soft kiss over Jax's heart. "I hope you're right."
"What is on your agenda today?"
"No plans. I want your parents to have the day with Jillian before they leave tomorrow. Do we know yet what Jerry's plans are?"
Jax chuckled. "As a matter of fact, he told me last night. He has decided to oversee the next phase of Canadian Timber from here."
"You mean Port Charles? You are kidding?"
"No, I am not."
Brenda was grinning like a cheshire cat. "Very interesting, very interesting indeed. Jerry is staying in Port Charles. I wonder why?"
"Don't go there. It is too early in the morning for that."
Brenda laughed. "I don't know what you are talking about, Mr. Jacks."
Jax looked down at Brenda. "Brenda, I see that look in your eyes and it scares me. I know you are plotting something."
"Not necessarily. We will just have to wait and see."
"You are so naughty."
Brenda put her arms around Jax's neck. "You seemed to like it when I was naughty last night." Jax laughed as Brenda pushed him back onto the bed. "I guess I will just have to remind you now."
"Mrs. Jacks, be warned that I often have to be reminded over and over again about things."
"Don't worry. I'll be here as long as it takes."
Jax surrendered his lips to hers and the reminding lesson began.
J & J Jacks -- 3:00pm
Jax was out of the office so Addie was helping Jerry to organize his office. Since he had been shuffling between office locations for the past few months, Jerry had never bothered to set up a permanent office in Port Charles. Now he needed an organized place to conduct business.
Addie walked out of the office as Julia walked into the room. Jerry was hanging the mounted head of a grizzly bear on his wall when Julia entered.
"You aren't really putting that dead thing in here?"
"This is one of most prized possessions. I risked my life to nab this baby. Look at the teeth on this sucker."
"No thank you. I abhor game hunting. It is just another hobby for you men to try to prove that you are macho."
"That is such a typical female remark."
"What other type of remark would you expect me to make?"
"How about a rational or logical one? Oh, I forgot since you are a woman, that would be impossible."
"Why do I even bother to attempt to carry on a conversation with you?"
"I am cursed with such charm and charisma, you just can't help yourself."
Addie walked back into the office and handed Jerry a folder. "Mr. Jacks, here are the resumes for the temporary secretary position. I have set up the interviews for tomorrow."
"Thank you Addie."
Julia stood there with her arms folded as Addie walked out of the office. "I can't imagine that there is anyone desperate enough to agree to work for you."
"Oh, you would be surprised."
"Somehow I doubt it."
"Would you like to interview for the position? You would have to wear much shorter and tighter skirts. Low cut blouses are also a requirement."
"You are scum."
Julia turned around and stormed out of the office. Jerry's voice followed her. "I guess I should take that as a no. If you change your mind about the job, let me know."
Jerry leaned back in his chair grinning as Julia rushed past Addie. Addie shook her head. Things were about to become much more interesting in the Port Charles office of J & J Jacks.
The Jacks Residence -- 8:00pm
Brenda was in the bathroom giving Jillian a bath. The baby's bathtub sat on the huge marble vanity in the master bath. Brenda was making faces at Jillian in between tickling and making funny noises at the baby. Jillian was smiling and gurgling at Brenda. Jane stood silently at the entrance to the master suite and was beaming as she watched the scene.
Jax had scheduled an evening meeting and had just arrived home. He walked up the stairs and found his mother standing at the entrance to the suite. "Mum, what are you doing?"
Jane put her finger to her lips and whispered. "I am watching a love story."
Jax looked into the room and smiled when he saw the sight before him. "That is the perfect way to describe it."
"She is such a wonderful mother. Jillian is part of such a loving family."
"That's all I want for Jillian, that's all I want for both of them."
"And to think that eighteen months ago, I worried that your marriage to Brenda would only end up hurting you. I could not have been more wrong."
"We have all come a long way from that day in Alaska when you and Dad first met Brenda. That was a lifetime ago. She is the best thing that ever happened to me."
"I know, son. You're the best thing that ever happened to her too. I don't think I have ever seen a woman so much in love."
Jax put his arm around Jane and they entered the bedroom and walked to the master bath. "Look at you princess, do you like your bath?"
"Tell them Jillian, tell Daddy and Grandma how much you like your splashy."
Jillian smiled and splashed before Brenda took her out of the tub. Jax was waiting with a towel and he wrapped her up and dried her off. Jax then diapered her and dressed her for bed while Brenda went to the kitchen to get the bottle. Jax and Jane took Jillian to the den where Jane fed her.
John joined them and the subject of Christmas came up. "Well, what are the plans, son? Your mother and I are certainly looking forward to Christmas this year. I am sure Santa Claus is going to be very good to a certain little girl."
Brenda smiled. "Why does that not surprise me? Please promise me you won't buy her a pony."
Jane laughed. "Jillian's first Christmas should be very special."
Brenda nodded. "It will be Jane. I think we should all spend Christmas together in Alaska."
Jax was stunned but could not keep the grin off his face. "Sweetie, I thought you would want to spend our first real family Christmas at home."
"We will have a family Christmas at home, your home in Alaska."
"Brenda, Mum and I can come to Port Charles and we can all spend Christmas here."
"Dear, as much as I love the idea of having you in Alaska, I don't want you to miss your first Christmas morning in your own home. I want you to spend the holiday with your sister as well."
"Jane, we won't miss that. We can spend Christmas Eve and Christmas morning here and then fly to Alaska to spend Christmas evening with you and John. I'll convince Julia to come with us. We'll stay for a few days and be back in Port Charles for the Quartermaine's New Year's Eve party."
John slapped his knee. "Well, that sounds like a fine idea. Leave it to Brenda to figure out the means to make everyone happy."
Jane smiled. "Yes, that does sound like a great plan. This little one is asleep so I am going to take her upstairs. You stay here, Pa and I will tuck her in."
Jane walked over to Brenda and Jax with the baby. "Good night, precious. Mommy will see you in a few hours."
"Sweet dreams, princess. Mommy and Daddy love you."
Jane and John took the baby upstairs to the nursery and Jax took Brenda's hand in his. "Christmas in Alaska, are you sure?"
"Positive. I want to show Jillian the meaning of a true family Christmas. I want her to see us sitting in front of the fire, drinking hot chocolate and toasting marshmallows while looking at the handmade ornaments on the Christmas tree. I want Jillian to hear Christmas carols sung around the fire and to see the train set under the tree. I want her to look outside and see nothing but snow on the ground and stars in the sky. I want her to be in a warm, cozy cabin filled with more love than imaginable. That is the gift I want us to give her."
Jax wiped the tear that glistened in the corner of Brenda's eye. He then ran his hand through her hair. "The greatest gift that Jillian has is you. Do you know how much I love you?"
Brenda stroked Jax's cheek. "Yes, darling I know. I just want her to have everything I didn't have. I want her to be raised with as much love as you were. Even when your family had nothing, you had each other which meant you had everything."
"She'll have everything I promise. We will all have everything."
Jax took Brenda's face in his hands and they shared a kiss as sweet as honey. Brenda leaned against Jax's shoulder and they held each other. They spent the rest of the evening basking in the love they shared.

The Gate House -- 11:00am
Lois and Brooke had returned to Port Charles the past weekend. Brenda was helping Lois finish unpacking as both Brooke and Jillian were napping. Later today, Brenda was meeting Lucy for lunch at the Grille and Lois had offered to watch Jillian while Brenda was gone.
"Brenda, you certainly have had a busy few days. Between planning for Christmas and working on Dara's next recording session, I can't believe you had time to do this much background work on this plan of yours."
"It's exhilarating."
"Brenda, I think it is a fabulous idea. It will be such a source of comfort and relief for everyone involved."
"I am banking on that. Once I came up with the idea, I stopped hearing Stone's words ringing in my ears. I think I finally figured out what he meant."
"What does Jax say about all this?"
"I have not told him yet. I want to have the whole plan of action determined before I spring this on him. I want to do this myself. I don't want to feel like I am trading on the name of J & J Jacks."
"I understand. What's next?"
"I had a meeting at the hospital yesterday and Simone and Audrey are compiling some information for me. Justus gave me some advice about the best way to initiate the process from a legal standpoint. He is out of town this week for ELQ but we have a meeting scheduled next week to discuss the issues."
"Let me know what I can do to help. I am sure we can figure out a way to get L&B involved."
"Count on it. Ideas are already running through my head. I also am going to broach the subject with Lucy today when I have lunch with her. I am sure there can be a role for Jacks' Cosmetics in this."
"It should be interesting and I think it is great you are going to do this."
"Thanks. Now tell me how things are here. Have the Q's been on their best behavior?"
"Surprisingly, yes. You saw A.J. when you and Jax helped me move on Saturday. Monica and Alan came over for a few moments on Sunday to wish me well but no visit from Edward or any tantrums yet. I saw Lila at the house yesterday and she reminded me of the marching orders she gave the family."
"How is Ned?"
"He's fine. He comes for breakfast every morning since Brooke awakes so early."
"What is the situation at ELQ?"
"He says he is passing off some of his duties to Justus which is why Justus is out of town this week. This morning he even brought up a revival tour for Eddie Maine."
"What does Edward say about that?"
"Ned claims he has Edward under control. Ground rules have been set and Edward knows what lines not to cross. We shall just see."
"I am sure it will work. You both want this too much."
"I didn't think it was possible but seeing how Jax and his family can run international conglomerates and still retain a semblance of a normal family unit gives me some hope that it may be feasible."
"I don't know if normal is the best way to describe our family. We have to contend with Jerry, remember?"
Lois laughed. "How is Mr. Outlandish?"
"Relieved in my estimation. The renovations to Julia's loft have hit a snag and won't be completed until next month so he has her as a captive audience for another month. Contrary to her protests, she does not mind."
"I agree with your take on this. I saw how they looked each other when I saw them last night at dinner."
"Even Jax is finally acknowledging the possibility. Too bad Julia and Jerry still refuse to admit it."
"Something tells me that will change."
Brenda nodded her head. "Something tells me you are right whether they like it or not."
J & J Jacks -- 2:00pm
The Atlantic deal and the second stage of the Canadian Timber transaction were keeping everyone very busy. Staffing additions were made to assist with the increased workload in the Port Charles office. Jerry had hired Francesca Grimaldi as his secretary. She was competent and highly qualified and simply radiant. Francesca had coal black shoulder length hair and emerald green eyes. She had a model's figure and spoke with a slight Italian accent.
Julia had also hired an assistant to act as a liaison between J & J Jacks and Ernst & Young, the accounting firm handling both deals. Already Andrew Burns had proven to be a very capable and accomplished addition to the team. His dark brown locks, blue eyes and well conditioned physique were also quite easy on the eyes.
Jerry was tapping on his desk with a pencil as he buzzed Julia's office and spoke to her secretary, Sally. "Hello Sally. Is Julia available?"
"I'm sorry, Mr. Jacks but she and Mr. Burns are at the Port Charles Grille for a lunch meeting. If it is an emergency, I can reach her."
"No emergency, Sally. Just tell her that I would like to meet with her when she returns."
Jerry hung up the phone and threw the pencil onto the desk. His thoughts focused on Julia. She certainly was getting chummy with Andrew. This was the third lunch meeting in a week and they had also had two dinner meetings. There could not be that much business to discuss. Jerry slammed his hand down on the desk. Why did this make any difference to him? Even though the memory of the feel of her lips still sent shock waves through him, Jerry told himself that she meant nothing to him. Unfortunately for him, it was getting harder every day to believe.
A short while later, Julia and Andrew returned to the office. Sally gave Julia the message from Jerry and Julia walked toward his office. She immediately heard the sound of laughter. Jerry was standing with his back to the door and Francesca was giggling. He was conveying in fluent Italian a story of one of his past escapades in Milan.
Julia took a deep breath and backed away from the door. The scene before her bothered her immensely and she did not want to know why. This was not the first time she had walked by Jerry's office suite and had heard the sound of their laughter. Her thoughts went to the previous week when she had walked into Jerry's office and saw him showing Francesca the "prizes" from his big game hunts. Of course Francesca was in awe of the stories Jerry was telling her.
Julia sighed. Francesca was so beautiful and men always seemed to be attracted to foreign women. Now he even had someone to impress with his fluent Italian. Julia shook her head. Why did this make any difference to her? Why did he have to stay in Port Charles?
Jax walked out of his office on his was to meet with Scott and he saw Julia in the hall. "Julia, is there a problem?"
Julia looked up at him. "I am beginning to think so." She then turned and walked to her office without another word.
Jax watched Julia walk off and then remembered Jerry's reaction yesterday to the news that Julia and Andrew were having another dinner meeting. He closed his eyes and then muttered to himself. "Brenda was right. God help us all."
The Jacks Residence -- 10:00pm
Brenda finished organizing the items she had purchased on her quick shopping spree after her lunch with Lucy. Brenda had taken Lucy to lunch to thank her for helping to make the arrangements for one of the Christmas gifts for Jax. They had spoken about Brenda's return to Jacks' Cosmetics on a limited basis after the first of the year. Brenda had also discussed the potential support of Jacks' Cosmetics in connection with her newest venture. Lucy was confident that something could be done once all the arrangements had been made to initiate the enterprise.
Brenda checked on Jillian and then went downstairs in search of Jax. She heard voices and laughter from the game room and shook her head. They were at it again. Brenda walked into the room as Jax had just completed his final turn on Jack-Bot.
Jax slapped Jerry on the back. "The winner and still champion. Jerry, when are you just going to give up?"
"Never. I will get you next time."
Brenda stood in the doorway and cleared her throat. "Is it safe to come in yet?"
Jerry turned around and rolled his eyes. "Why didn't you make your appearance five minutes ago? I would have clobbered him then. You know Jax can never concentrate when you are around."
Jax laughed. "Nice try, Jer."
"I will leave before your head gets too big but I want a rematch. Good night all."
Jerry left the room and Brenda walked over to Jax. "Congratulations. What is your reward?"
"This for a start." Jax pulled her into his arms and softly covered her lips with his. The kiss lingered as Brenda stroked his mouth with her tongue.
As they broke apart, Jax laughed. "My brother will never have a chance at victory now that I know that rewards like that await the winner."
"I thought you could use the extra added incentive."
Jax sat down in the chair and pulled Brenda into his lap. "I see that one of the spare guest rooms looks like the warehouse of Wyndham's and it looks like it received another delivery today."
"Yes, I found some great things this afternoon. Fortunately, I had the 4-Runner with me. It has come in handy transporting everything back to the house."
Jax grinned at her. "Didn't you know that was why I bought it last week. Not to protect you and Jillian in the winter weather but so you could use it as your sleigh, Santa."
Brenda swatted his arm. "It's Christmas, Jax. We have family and friends to consider. You should see all the decorations I had to buy. You know how large this house is and it is going to look like a Christmas wonderland when I finish with it. I can't wait until you see what I bought for the staircase."
As Brenda was explaining her decorating plans, Jax could barely comprehend what she was saying. His heart was beating so loudly he could barely think. She was beaming and her eyes were shining like the brightest star in the sky. Seeing Brenda so happy delighted him beyond words.
Brenda looked at him and saw the look of awe on his face. "Jax, are you listening to me?"
Jax laughed and kissed her forehead. "Yes. Sweetie, whatever you want is fine with me. Decorate and buy as much as your little heart desires. I want this Christmas to be perfect for you."
"I don't need those things to make it perfect, I just need you and the baby for that. I just want to make it special for all of us."
"It will be, Brenda. I promise."
Brenda kissed his cheek and then rested her head on his shoulder. Jax held her in his arms as they both closed their eyes and enjoyed the moment.

The Jacks Residence -- 11:30am
Brenda was in the home office reviewing the materials that Audrey and Simone had presented to her earlier in the week. Brenda had already given the materials to the other interested parties. She had put together a small group of advisors to assist her to this point. Brenda had met with Justus yesterday and he had filled her in on the legal procedures for her idea. She had requested that he start the paperwork to commence the venture. Audrey and Simone were ecstatic and wanted to assist Brenda in a presentation to the Board of Directors as soon as Brenda was ready.
Once the holidays were over, the plans would be set in motion. It was time now to discuss the plans with Jax because now Brenda needed his input. She needed to make sure what she was planning made the best business sense for her ultimate goal. Brenda knew that once the project began, it was going to become quite a commitment but she was ready for it. She just hoped Jax would agree with her plans.
Brenda walked out of the office and carefully inspected the decorating work that she and Corrine had completed the day before. Everything was finished except for getting and decorating the tree. Jax had been so busy with the Atlantic deal that Brenda doubted they could get to the downtown Christmas tree lot until the weekend. Each room had a different color scheme but a central theme ran throughout the house. Gold bows were tied around the white candles that lined each window of the house. There was garland with gold bows around each door frame and mistletoe hung from the center of every door. The staircase was also wrapped with the same garland and bow ensemble. There were red and white poinsettias everywhere.
The den was red and gold. The mantel was wrapped with pine garland and red and gold bows. White lights were intertwined though the garland. Nutcrackers and hurricane lamps sat atop the mantel while red stockings hung from it. On the hearth, stood a group of carolers and on the book case, an exhibit of the entire Dickens' village sat. Three foot tall toy soldiers stood at the terrace doors. Red bows were affixed to all the brass hurricane lamps and candlesticks in the room. Gold bells hung from the door knobs of the terrace doors and pine wreaths with gold bows hung on the inside of the terrace doors.
The living room was the picture of a Victorian Christmas. The tree would be placed in the corner and would be decorated with white twinkling lights and ivory, pink and blue balls, bows, flowers and other ornaments. Crystal beads would be wrapped around the tree as garland and an angel would sit as the treetop. There was even a Victorian tree skirt for the tree. A large Victorian Mr. and Mrs. Claus stood on the fireplace hearth and a Waterford nativity set sat on the piano. Garland with ivory bows and twinkling white lights wrapped the mantel. The mantel was also decorated with candlesticks and angel figurines. Victorian wreaths with ivory bows hung on the inside of the terrace doors. Unlike those in the rest of the house, the poinsettias in this room were pink and white to match the decor.
The rest of the inside of the house was also decorated. The dining room looked particularly beautiful trimmed in gold and silver. Outside, a large wreath hung on the front door and smaller wreaths hung from each window. The wreaths all had large red bows with ribbon tails. The window candles were lit each night. The pillars at the entrance to the house were wrapped with garland and red bows and there were huge red-bowed wreaths on the gates of both entrances to the estate. It had been a lot of work but Brenda was happy with the results.
Brenda was listening to Nat King Cole's Christmas CD and thinking. The only problem looming over the holiday was Julia. Thus far, Brenda had not been able to convince her to join them in Alaska. This was very upsetting and Brenda had to find a way to persuade her to make the trip. It would not be Christmas without her. As Brenda was pondering this, the phone rang. "Happy holidays!"
"Happy holidays to you, Mrs. Jacks."
"Honey, good morning. I was hoping I would get the chance to speak to you since you left before I even got up this morning. How did the meeting go?"
"Great. I called to see what Jillian's schedule is right now."
"She is sleeping but I expect her up at any minute, why?"
"Good. Once you feed her, bundle her up and yourself as well and I will be home in an hour. Good-bye. I love you."
"Jax." The line was dead. Brenda put the phone down and smiled. What was in store for them now?"
An hour later, Brenda was dressing Jillian after feeding and changing her. She grabbed the quilted hooded snuggler that Lois had handed down from Brooke and a blanket and walked into the hall toward the stairs. She heard the front door open and Jax entered the house.
"Hey. Are you two ready?"
Brenda descended the stairs. "Ready for what?"
"The start of a family tradition."
Brenda smiled. The phrase "family tradition" still instantly brought joy to her heart. "We are ready."
"Okay, let me just go up and change and we will be off. Where is the car seat?"
"In the Mercedes."
"Okay, I need to put it into the 4-Runner."
"The 4-Runner?" Brenda grinned. "Does this mean we need space to transport my very large and very numerous Christmas presents?"
Jax laughed at her. She was still like a little girl when it came to presents. "No, that is not what it means and stop trying to get clues out of me about your Christmas presents. You will know Christmas morning and no earlier. Also, stop rummaging through the closets looking for your gifts. I am not that foolish enough to leave them here for you to find."
Brenda feigned a look of surprise. "Rummage through closets? I would never do that."
"Watch it, Pinocchio, your nose is growing."
Brenda stuck her tongue out at Jax as he walked up the stairs. A few minutes later, he was ready and Brenda wrapped Jillian up and they left to start their family adventure.
J & J Jacks -- 1:00pm
Julia was sitting at her desk when the intercom buzzed. "Yes."
"You are there. I am coming to talk to you."
"Jerry, what do you want?" The connection was lost and Julia slammed down the phone. Sally was at lunch and Jerry walked right into Julia's office.
Julia glared at him. "Jerry, what is the problem now? Have I forgotten to get your permission to go to the ladies' room?"
Jerry sat down in a chair across the desk from Julia. "This has nothing to do with business. It is about you and Christmas."
"What? What about me and Christmas?"
"I understand that you have not accepted my family's invitation to come to Alaska."
"Why is this any concern of yours? What difference does it make to you?"
"None, but I know it bothers Brenda and whatever bothers Brenda upsets Jax. She is hellbent on having some type of Christmas fantasy and Jax wants to ensure she has it. My God, look at that house, the North Pole does not have that many lights and glitter. She is obsessed in my opinion but Jax will indulge each of her fancies. They both have problems in my estimation."
"You are so jaded. She is not obsessed. She is simply trying to give her family a wonderful Christmas. Jax loves her and he wants her to be happy so of course he will assist her in any way possible. That is what love is all about."
"Fine then. You love your sister so why aren't you helping her with this family Christmas fantasy? Why aren't you coming to Alaska?"
"Jerry, don't turn this around now to me. We were talking about her husband."
"Okay, maybe you just don't want to accept my parents' offer of hospitality?"
"Stop it. I am very fond of both of your parents."
"Well, that only leaves me then as the reason for you not coming to Alaska. Are you afraid of me?"
"You are losing your mind. Why would I be afraid of you?"
"Alaska is my home turf and maybe you don't think you could control yourself around me there. The nights are very cold you know."
"You are so full of yourself. You have nothing to do with my decision not to go to Alaska."
"I don't know what else it can be. You love your sister and want her to be happy. You like my parents and Jax. You enjoy Jillian. What else could it be?"
"You know that I am going to Switzerland the day after Christmas for a ski trip."
"That's right. I did hear something about you meeting Thao. That is not an excuse. That casanova spends the whole winter at the ski resorts warming up to his snow bunnies. You could be his conquest some other time."
"Do you ever listen to yourself? You get more ridiculous every day. Get out of here now."
"Do you ever listen to yourself Ms. Barrett? I don't believe you for a second. Just admit it, you can't withstand the temptation of being in a cabin with me for a few days. You know you couldn't control yourself."
"You are a b**tard. I am going to show you just how dead wrong you are. I will accept your parents' invitation and I will reschedule my trip with Thao. You will see what a fool you are then."
Jerry stood up and walked to the door. "It will never happen. Remember those warm clothes and a hot water bottle, the nights can be brutal."
Julia threw her pen at the door as Jerry exited the office. Why did he make her absolutely crazy? What had she just agreed to do? Julia lowered her head onto the desk. This was going to be trouble.
Jerry walked back to his office and sat in his chair and leaned back with a smug look on his face. No, Thao she was not going to be available for you. Sorry old chum, but not this time. In fact, if he had anything to do with it, not ever.
Pine Valley Farms -- 2:30pm
Jillian had slept most of the ninety minute drive outside of Port Charles. Jax still refused to tell Brenda anything about where they were going. Since it was obvious he was not going to budge on the issue, Brenda decided that the drive was a good time to tell him of her idea. She explained the concept and what Justus and the others had suggested. He did not say a word or give her any reaction as she presented the plan.
Brenda finished and was a little nervous since she could not read his thoughts on the subject. "Well, what do you think? Does any of it make any sense? Am I just deluding myself that I could possibly pull this off?"
Jax pulled the vehicle into the parking lot of the country store they came upon. Brenda swallowed hard and wondered if she was going to start to crying now or after he had finished. He obviously hated the idea and needed his full focus to let her down easily. What was she even thinking trying to do this herself?" She couldn't even look at him now.
Jax put his hand under Brenda's chin and turned her head so that she was facing him. "Sweetie, I am going to start by saying one thing. If someone came to me for advice about how to undertake what you are contemplating, I would tell him that I could not help him. I would then advise him to see you for advice because you have already become an expert on the subject and have hit all the necessary angles."
Brenda's smile would have lit up the darkest night. "Really? You're not just saying that? You approve? You think it could work? You think I can handle this?"
Jax interrupted her barrage of questions with a kiss. "Of course I approve, not that you should believe that is necessary. This can work and you can handle it. I am so proud of you."
Brenda hugged him. She could still count on both hands how many times anyone had ever told her that they were proud of her. "I wanted to have the background done before I spoke to you about it. I hope that does not upset you but I wanted to see what I could do on my own first."
"I am not upset. I am thrilled that you have found something that seems to mean so much to you."
"It does. Giving the families of the patients at General Hospital a place to stay when their family members are in long-term treatment programs is all I want to do. Ever since I met Jimmy and his mother, I wanted to do something. Then there was that message that Stone was trying to convey to me in my dreams. I keep thinking about what would happen if it were Jillian, I love her so much. She is the real reason behind me wanting to do this. I don't want any parent to have to go through that."
"So the love you have for your daughter is really being used as a tool to help others." Jax smiled. "Where have I heard that before?"
Brenda looked at him and then it hit her. The fortune teller in New Orleans had uttered that same statement when she read Brenda's fortune. "Jax, the fortune teller."
"I know. I guess she is two for two with Stone and now this."
"Three for three, Mr. Jacks. I know we will have a lifetime of love and adventure."
"Absolutely. Speaking of adventures, we had better get moving on our next one. We will finish this discussion once we get there."
Jax pulled back onto the road and fifteen minutes later he pulled into the entrance for Pine Valley Farms.
Brenda took in her surroundings. "Pine Valley Farms. This is a Christmas tree farm."
"Give the lady a sterling silver dollar."
"A Christmas tree farm? You mean we are going to cut down our own Christmas tree like they did on Waltons' Mountain?"
"Yes, Mary Ellen."
"Oh, Jax. When are you going to stop doing this?"
"Stop doing what?"
"Astounding me."
"Never, so get used to it."
They parked the car and Brenda put Jillian in the papoose carrier she had in the diaper bag. Jax grabbed the saw from the back of the car while Brenda looked at the diagram of types of trees and their locations on the farm.
"Oh, Douglas firs are so beautiful. I think we should get one."
"That is fine. Of course I see they are at the farthest end of the farm so I will have to drag it all the way back here."
"That will be nothing for such a fine specimen like yourself. John-Boy and Jason had to drag their trees all the way down the mountain."
Jax shook his head at her. "Let's go, Mary Ellen."
As they walked to the Douglas fir section, Brenda told Jax about her meeting with A.J. concerning help from the City Council that the project would need; her meeting with the real estate agent about the availability of existing property adjacent to GH; her meeting with Simone and Audrey about the needs of the property; her meeting with the construction engineer about renovating property to meet the needs of the families; and her meeting with Justus about the best way to set up the non-profit entity to handle the receipt of the funding. She also talked about her research into government grants and funding as well as her discussions with Lucy and a few other large corporations about underwriting and sponsorship.
"Like I said before, you handled all the angles. I can't believe you have gotten this much done in a little over two weeks. You also chose the appropriate persons to advise you. You really have handled this just as I would any business transaction."
"I have learned so much from you just by being included in your discussions about J & J Jacks."
"Brenda, it takes more than being included in a discussion to have done what you did. You obviously have an aptitude for this. As I have said before, you are a true Jacks. I also think being a Barrett may have had something to do with it."
"Maybe, but I like the Jacks component much better."
They reached the Douglas fir section and after much evaluation, Brenda finally found the perfect tree. It was seven foot tall and perfectly shaped. Brenda clapped her hands together. "This is it."
Jax looked at her in amazement. She looked like a little girl. The smallest things brought her tremendous joy. She didn't need diamonds and furs, she needed to cut down her own Christmas tree. "Are you sure now? I have heard that before."
"I know I have driven you crazy but this is it. I am positive. Look Jillian, this is your first Christmas tree. Daddy is going to cut it down now."
Brenda held the trunk while Jax cut the tree. After a few moments, the tree fell to the ground. Brenda began walking toward the entrance as Jax pulled the tree behind him.
"Okay back there, John-Boy?"
"Yes, Mary Ellen."
Brenda went back to the truck to feed Jillian while the tree was bundled and tied to the ski rack on top of the truck. Jillian was then put in her car seat and they were ready to head back. Jax got into the truck and Brenda raised her hand to his cheek. "Thank you honey."
Jax smiled. "Darling, you're welcome."
The Jacks Residence -- 8:00pm
Brenda looked at the bare tree sitting in the stand in the corner of the living room. It was beautiful even without one decoration on it. She would decorate it tomorrow. It was going to be perfect. Jax walked into the living room and stood behind her. He put his arms around her waist and Brenda intertwined her fingers with his. "Jax, it is so beautiful."
"It sure is. Everything is. You did an extraordinary job with the entire house."
"Now I just have to figure out how to persuade Julia to change her ski trip plans."
"Brenda, I know how much you want her to come to Alaska with us but she does not seem to want to take the trip."
"We know why and this is getting more ridiculous every day. They will both be in nursing homes before they even admit anything."
Jax laughed. "I don't know exactly what there is to admit. Maybe they just are physically attracted to each other and nothing more."
"No way. If that were the case, they could just sleep together and it would be over. It is more than that and that is why they both are etrified. I don't know which one of them is worse. One of them has got to make some type of move but we could be waiting until Jillian is graduating from high school for that."
The front door opened and Julia entered the house. She saw Jax and Brenda in the living room and walked toward them.
Julia looked into the corner of the room. "Look at the tree."
Brenda smiled. "John-Boy Jacks here cut it down himself."
"It is gorgeous."
"Yes, Jax just wanted me to partake of another of my Christmas fantasies. The holiday is going to be so wonderful Julia. Are you sure I can't change your mind about coming with us to Jax's parents house?"
"Well, as a matter of fact, I have decided to join you in Alaska."
"Are you kidding?"
"No, I called Jane today and accepted her invitation."
Jax watched as Brenda tried to contain herself from jumping up and down. "That is wonderful. I know you had plans to go skiing, what made you change your mind?"
"Jax, I called Thao and we rescheduled."
"You were set against coming with us even after I tried to guilt trip you into it."
"Brenda, I know but I know how much this means to you so I decided to change my plans."
Brenda hugged Julia. "I am so happy. We are going to have a wonderful time."
"We'll see. I am going to go up and change. I'll see you both later."
Julia went upstairs and Brenda looked at Jax. "Something happened to change her mind."
"Who knows? She is coming so you will have your entire family with you."
"Yes, I guess that is all that matters but I still would like to know what happened with her."
Jerry then came into the house. He walked into the living room and looked at the tree. "So this was the result of the adventure for the afternoon?"
"Yes, John-Boy gave me the Waltons reunion and brought the tree down the mountain for me."
Jerry looked at Jax. "John-Boy, that is perfect for you." Jerry laughed. "You must have had some help. I know you didn't drag this big old tree all by yourself."
"Ha, ha Jerry."
Brenda put her hands on her hips. "I guess Jax really can't be John-Boy since Jerry is older. Of course, I guess I can't be Mary Ellen then either."
"I don't want to be John-Boy. Jax there is the man with the passion for literature and writing. I hate that crap. Which one of the Walton boys got into the most trouble?"
"Well, Jason owned a saloon and was a musician so I guess he was the free spirit of the group."
"That's me then. He can keep John-Boy. Jason and John-Boy, we don't even have to change our monograms."
"Jerry, don't encourage her."
Brenda hit Jax's arm. "Jerry, Julia has agreed to come to Alaska with us for Christmas. Now we will all be together."
"I see."
"Jerry, you don't look surprised."
"No, I am not. I spoke to her this afternoon about how upset Brenda was about not being with her sister for Christmas."
"You said that to Julia? Who are you and what have you done with my brother?"
"I just want Ms. Walton to be happy."
Jax gave Jerry a look of astonishment. "So you convinced Julia to change her plans?"
"Jax, I can be very persuasive."
Brenda hugged him. "Thank you Jerry. I do appreciate it."
"Anytime. Mary Ellen, you do a good job of keeping John-Boy here out of my hair most of the time. I am going up to change before I head out to the gym. Ciao."
Jax shook his head as Jerry left the room. "Something is definitely going on here. There is no way Julia would have listened to anything he said to her."
"I agree but the best thing is that she is coming. Once they are at your parents' house, we will see what happens."
"Brenda, you realize this could end up in a disaster."
"There is always that chance. I don't see it happening here once they get past all the bravado. The biggest question is how and when is that going to happen."
"And how are the rest of us going to survive until then?"
Brenda laughed as she put her arms around Jax and rested her head on his shoulder. "Maybe we should send them to New Orleans."
"No. In my eyes, New Orleans belongs to us and only us. Let them find their own city of love and romance."
"Jax, any city we are in instantly becomes a city of love and romance."
Jax laughed. "You're right. They need to get out of Port Charles and stop following us."
Brenda looked up at him and smiled. "Stop it. Everyone should be as happy as we are."
Jax stepped away from Brenda and took her hands in his. "Yes, but that is an impossible feat. No one in this entire world can be as happy as we are. It is simply inconceivable."
"You are right. Do you know that you are my life?"
"As you are mine. The rest of the world will just have to be content with being on the next level down. We have a monopoly on that top position and that is one title I refuse to relinquish."
"I agree, John-Boy. We are at the summit of the mountain and there is no one even close to us." Brenda looked up and smiled. "Do you see where we are? We have to keep with tradition here."
Jax grinned as he saw the mistletoe hanging overhead. "Traditions are quite important. I wouldn't dream of breaking them."
Their lips met as the candles flickered around them casting shadows on the wall. He was hers as she was his. They were one in heart and soul and the rest of the world could only aspire to match the love they shared.

The Jacks Residence -- 8:00am
The past week had been hectic. Brenda had decorated the tree in the living room and it looked like it should have been standing in the White House rather than in Port Charles. She had finished her shopping earlier in the week with Robin and Lois. Robin was home for the next month before the semester began again.
Brenda and Lois had taken the girls to see Santa Claus. Jillian had slept through her first meeting with Santa and Brooke had screamed. Brenda still had been unable to get any further information from either Julia or Jerry about the real reason behind Julia's decision to travel to Alaska. All arrangements had been made and John and Jane were expecting everyone for dinner tomorrow night.
Jax and Brenda were having a small dinner party this evening for Robin, Jason, Ned and Lois and of course Julia and Jerry. The friends were all going to exchange gifts then since Jax and Brenda were leaving tomorrow for Alaska and Ned and Lois were heading to Bensonhurst late tomorrow afternoon. Ned had surprised Lois by deciding to skip the annual Christmas Eve and Christmas Day dinners with the Quartermaines. Ned and Lois would instead be having brunch with the Q's on Christmas and then heading to the Cerrullos for dinner. Jax and Brenda were going to make an appearance at the Quartermaines before heading to Alaska tomorrow afternoon.
Brenda was standing in the den looking out the terrace doors while she drank her tea. The grounds looked beautiful. There were about four inches of snow on the ground and the snow had now tapered off to flurries. Snow was also forecast for the early morning hours of tomorrow. It was going to be a white Christmas.
Jax silently walked up to her from behind and put his arms around Brenda. "Good morning. Merry Christmas Eve." Jax then started nuzzling her neck.
Brenda turned her head to give Jax better access to her neck. She moaned at the feel of his warm lips and tongue on her skin. "Good morning yourself."
Jax lifted his head and Brenda rested her head against his shoulder. "Jax, look at it. I can't believe we are actually going to have a white Christmas. You arranged this, didn't you?"
Jax laughed and tightened his arms around her. "I wish I could take credit for it but I can't. If wishing for something makes a difference then I had a part in this. I certainly wanted you to have all your Christmas dreams come true."
"They have already. Do you really have to go to the office this early? The roads are still bad."
"No need for you to worry. I know you have some gifts you want to deliver today but I want you to wait until I get to the office and tell you the roads have been cleared before you go anywhere and I want Virgil to take you in the 4-Runner when you do go."
"Jax, I want you to take the 4-Runner. You are the one that has to travel this morning and we know the roads are still treacherous. I can take car this afternoon. Virgil has his own family to deal with. Emily is going to babysit and I can make my stops this afternoon when the roads have been cleared."
"Forget it. This discussion is over. Worrying about whether you have skidded off an icy road is not how I plan to spend Christmas Eve."
"What about you? You are the one that is going out now. I want you to take the 4-Runner. I mean it, Jax."
"I learned how to drive in Alaska. I can handle four inches of snow. Don't worry about me."
Brenda was exasperated. "I can't worry about you but you can worry about me? What is wrong with this picture?" She was talking with her hands and pacing.
Jax smiled. She was so adorable when she was angry. He grabbed her hand as she stormed by him. "Sweetie."
"Jax, let me go. I don't want to argue with you. It's Christmas Eve."
"I'm sorry. I love you and I am just worried about you."
"I understand that. I just need for you to understand that I feel the same way about you."
"I do know and I'm sorry. The last thing I want to do is upset you, especially now. I lost my head for a moment, I can't stand the thought of anything happening to you. I just want to protect you."
Brenda smiled as she saw the love shining through his eyes. "I'm sorry too. I overreacted. I am stressing out about the holiday. I love you too much to not worry about you."
"Let's start over. I have an idea. I will take the 4-Runner now and leave the office early this afternoon. Then I'll come here to pick you up and take you to make your Santa visits."
Brenda smiled. "Deal."
"There is that smile that I love so much." Jax hugged Brenda and she sighed. "Are we okay?"
Brenda tightened her arms around Jax's waist. "Yes, we are okay. Merry Christmas Eve darling."
Jax released Brenda from his arms. "I am going to the office now. I will call you before I leave."
"Don't be a slave driver. Let those people go home."
Jax bowed to Brenda. "Your wish is my command, my lady."
Brenda kissed him. "Promise me you will be careful."
"I promise. Don't worry about tonight or tomorrow. It is all going to be perfect."
The morning progressed and at noon, Jax closed the office and came home to drive Brenda on her Santa run. They delivered gifts to Ruby, Lucy and the Spencers and then made a stop at Luke's to wish Mike a good holiday and to speak to Sonny. Brenda wanted to talk to Sonny about her plans to establish a housing facility for the families of GH pediatric patients. The plans would be announced publicly once she returned from Alaska and Brenda wanted Sonny to hear about them in advance. While Brenda spoke with Sonny at the Club, Jax delivered gifts to Scott and Serena.
The pediatric AIDS unit of the Stone Cates Wing would provide the largest number of residents at the housing facility. Brenda did not want her project to conflict with any ideas Sonny had for the AIDS Wing or in any way detract from the donation he had made in Lily's name. Audrey, Simone and Brenda foresaw a symbiotic relationship between the two facilities assuming that the Board of Directors would agree to such. Since Sonny was still making large donations in Lily's name, the Board would be interested in his position about the housing facility.
Sonny told Brenda he would support her project in any way she wanted. The housing plan certainly would have been something that Lily would have advocated. Jax returned to the Club and wished all happy holidays. Jax and Brenda returned home to prepare for their guests this evening.
The Jacks Residence -- 7:00pm
Brenda spent the late afternoon completing the last minute details for the trip. They were all packed since tomorrow would be hectic. After opening gifts, they would be going to the Quartermaines for brunch and then off to the airport for the trip to Alaska.
Robin, Jason, Lois, Ned and Brooke had arrived and cocktails were being served. Brooke was in the playpen and Jillian was in the swing in the living room. The tree was lit and dozens of gifts had been placed beneath the branches. A roaring fire blazed in the fireplace. Everyone looked wonderful in their holiday evening wear. Brenda was dressed in red and Lois was in silver while Robin and Julia both wore green. Robin had actually convinced Jason to wear a blazer. They were meeting Sonny and Mike for midnight mass later this evening.
Jax raised his champagne flute. "I'd like to propose a toast."
Brenda took Jax's free hand in hers and everyone gathered around Jax and raised their glasses. "To our friends and family, we are blessed to be sharing this celebration with each of you. Even if we are not always physically together, you are in our hearts forever so you are with us always. Merry Christmas everyone!"
Everyone clinked glasses and Brenda buried her head into Jax's arm. Brooke started babbling and Jillian was mesmerized by the lights of the Christmas tree. Ned and Jax were talking and Jason actually seemed to be enjoying himself talking to Jerry about motorcycles.
"Jax, I don't think I have ever seen Brenda this happy. Thank you for making her that way."
"You're welcome, Ned, but making her smile gives me my greatest joy. I want to thank you for assistance with my gift for Brenda. Everything is set for tomorrow."
"Good. I know she will love it. She will probably be talking about it non-stop for weeks. You may want to get earplugs."
Jax grinned. "Actually I have grown very fond of her incessant chatter. Now, what is the latest with Lois? You two seem closer each time I see you together and Lois seems very happy."
"I hope so. I am happy but I am not pushing her. She and Brooke are in Port Charles and I am grateful for that right now."
"I wish you all the best and I know Brenda is hellbent on you and Lois being together again."
"I have gathered. She is about as subtle as a cyclone."
Jax and Ned looked over to the other side of the room where the ladies stood together. They were all chattering and Jax and Ned simply shook their heads and laughed. Brenda caught their actions and raised her eyebrow at Jax before rejoining the conversation.
Robin stared at the tree in wonder. "Brenda, the tree is gorgeous. I can't believe how many gifts are under there, especially since I know you have already delivered some."
Brenda looked over at Jax and laughed. "Jax has indulged me in my second career as Kris Kringle but I know he thinks I am completely nuts."
Lois whispered to her. "Ned and Jason brought you the gifts for Jax that you were hiding at the gate house. They put them in the garage like you wanted."
"Good. Now I just wonder where Jax has been hiding mine."
Julia shook her head and smiled. "Brenda, you have survived this long, I guess you will just have to last another fifteen hours until you open them."
Corrine announced that dinner was ready to be served and everyone ventured into the dining room. Dinner was superb. Jose had outdone herself with the meal. Dinner consisted of artichoke-seafood soup, caesar salad, Beef Wellington, kahlua-glazed carrots, steamed sugar snap peas, crescent rolls and wine. In honor of the occasion, Buche de Noel and cappuccino were served for dessert.
After dinner, everyone returned to the living room. Brooke and Jillian were fed and both fell asleep. Gifts were now exchanged while mugs of eggnog were passed around to everyone. Wrapping paper was everywhere as numerous gifts were opened. Everyone was rewarded with very special gifts, especially Jillian and Brooke. Jason was excited about the bike accessories Jerry had helped Brenda choose and Robin loved the cashmere sweater and new microcassette recorder for her classes that Brenda and Jax had given her. Brenda and Jax had bought Ned a new putter and other assorted golf paraphernalia while Lois received a portable CD player and Gucci purse. Jax and Brenda had both received tennis rackets form Ned and Lois. Robin and Jason had given Jax a replacement set of air darts for his dart game and a valet key ring. They had given Brenda a portfolio case for her new executive career.
It was approaching 11:00pm and time for the guests to head out. They ended the evening with Brenda playing the piano as Ned sang "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas." Brooke was bundled up and the gifts were taken to the car. One of Sonny's drivers had brought Robin and Jason and they had picked up Lois, Ned and Brooke at the gate house and had all come together. No one had to worry about alcohol or the weather since they had a designated driver. Now it was time for the hugs and kisses and to say good-bye.
"Robin, have a wonderful day tomorrow. I will call you when we get back from Alaska."
"Merry Christmas Brenda. Have a safe trip."
Brenda hugged Jason and wished him a happy holiday as Jax kissed Robin good-bye. "Merry Christmas both of you."
"Good night Jerry and Julia."
Brenda kissed Brooke and Ned as Jax helped Lois with her coat. Jason finished bringing the gifts to the car. "Lois, we will see you tomorrow."
"Give Jillian a kiss for us."
Jax shook Ned's hand. "Good night Ned. Thanks for coming."
"Thanks for the hospitality, Jax. It was a very nice evening."
Brenda and Jax waved good night to everyone. The air was cold and the wind had picked up. It definitely felt like snow.
The Jacks Residence -- 11:45pm
After their guests had left, Jerry and Julia had gone up for the night and Jax and Brenda had gotten dressed for bed. Brenda was now downstairs standing in the center of the living room. Only the lights of the Christmas tree and the candles in the windows provided illumination for the room. It was breathtaking. Brenda walked over to the window and saw the first flakes of snow falling from the sky. She smiled at the glistening snowflakes. Jax walked into the room and his breath caught in his throat as he saw her at the window. Her eyes were as big as saucers and her face reflected the innocence of a child. If Jax didn't know better, he would have sworn she was waiting to hear the sleigh and reindeer land on the roof.
Brenda turned to see him as Jax walked over to the stereo and put a CD in the CD player. He stood in front of the fireplace as the final embers burned themselves out. "The Christmas Waltz" began to play.
Jax held out his hand. "May I have this dance?"
Brenda smiled. "Now and always."
Brenda rested her head on his chest and they began swaying to the music. He was so warm and she could feel his heart beating. Jax held her tightly in his arms and rested his chin on the top of her head. It always felt like heaven to hold her in his arms.
As the music ended, the grandfather clock chimed as the new hour and new day had arrived. Brenda stepped away from Jax and took his hands in hers. "It's midnight."
Jax brought her hand to his lips. "Merry Christmas darling."
The lights of the tree cast a glimmering light on them as they stood there. Jax cradled her face in his hands and their lips met in an intoxicating kiss. Jax lifted her into his arms and carried her upstairs.
Brenda gasped when she entered the bedroom. While she had been downstairs, Jax had lit candles all around the room and built a fire in the fireplace. Blankets and pillows were on the floor in front of the hearth. Brenda smiled at Jax and caressed his cheek.
"Jax, it's just like last Christmas Eve."
"I thought it would be our tradition to spend Christmas Eve night in front of the fire."
Brenda raised her eyebrow. "Remember that Jillian was conceived last Christmas Eve in front of the fire."
Jax had a twinkle in his eye. "That we don't have to make part of the tradition."
Brenda laughed and buried her head into Jax's neck. He eased her down into the blankets on the floor. Jax took off his robe and laid beside her and pulled the comforter over them. Brenda rolled on top of him and began kissing his nose and cheeks before moving to his neck and bare chest. Jax put his arms around her and rubbed her back. Brenda put her arms around his neck and gave him an open mouth kiss. The flames raging inside them emitted more heat than the flames in the fireplace. Jax rolled Brenda onto her back and the flames became an inferno as they consummated their love.
After the flames had been extinguished and their passions fulfilled, Jax held Brenda in his arms and stroked her hair and cheek until she fell asleep. He watched her sleep. She had a smile on her face and seemed to be completely at peace.
Jax stroked her hair and kissed her forehead. "My darling, dream of sugar plums."

The Jacks Residence -- 6:45am
Brenda had been awake for almost an hour. Her restlessness had awakened Jax. He was totally amused by her actions. She was worse than a five year old. She could not stand the anticipation. Brenda had finished feeding Jillian and then laid her beneath the blankets so that the baby was between she and Jax.
"Merry First Christmas precious. What until you see what Santa Claus brought for you."
Jax kissed Jillian's forehead. "Merry Christmas princess."
"Jillian, tell Daddy you want to go downstairs to see what Santa Claus brought for you."
"Is that right Jillian? It seems to me that Mommy wants to go downstairs so she can see what Santa brought for her." Jillian smiled as Jax spoke to her. "Do you agree with Daddy?"
Brenda pulled the covers off Jax. "No, she does not."
"Hey, give me those back, Ms. Impatience."
Brenda had a smug look on her face. "Forget it."
"Fine." Jax sat up and uncovered Brenda's legs and removed her socks she had put on when she got up to get the baby.
Brenda started laughing. "Please no. You know how much I hate to have cold feet."
"You do? What about my cold feet?"
Brenda began shrieking as Jax rubbed his cold toes against her bare legs. "Stop it. Please." Brenda was laughing hysterically now and Jillian looked up in amazement at the antics of her parents.
Jax grabbed the comforter back and laid back done on the pillows. "Now, what were we talking about? Oh, going downstairs. I think we should join Jillian in her morning nap. We can deal with the presents later this morning."
Brenda hit Jax with a pillow. "You are tormenting me."
Jax couldn't suppress his laughter. "I know. It's working like a charm."
Brenda hit him again. "You are a dead man."
"Then you will never know where I hid your gifts."
Brenda glared at him. She was beaten again. She fell back against the pillows as Jax lifted Jillian and laid her on the other side of him. Jax rolled onto his side and faced Brenda. "Sweetie, I am just teasing you." He kissed her cheek and then her forehead.
Brenda folded her arms in front of her. "You are going to have to do better than that."
Jax kissed Brenda gently on the lips. "Merry Christmas darling." His lips softly covered her lips again and Brenda was swept away.
"Merry Christmas Jax."
"Well, are you ready to go downstairs?"
Brenda jumped up and giggled like a school girl. She put on a robe over her nightshirt and threw Jax his robe. Jax picked up Jillian from the blankets as Brenda walked to the balcony doors. It had snowed until dawn and there were six inches of fresh snow on the ground.
"Look at the snow. It looks like a winter wonderland out there."
Jax walked over to the window. "Jillian, this is your first white Christmas."
Brenda grabbed her slippers and ran down the hall. She beat on Jerry's door and then opened it. Jerry was trying to ignore her by covering his head with pillows. "Merry Christmas! Jerry, get up. It is time to open gifts."
Jerry groaned but did not budge from the bed.
"Be downstairs in ten minutes or I am coming up here with a bucket of ice cubes."
Brenda closed the door behind her and Jerry lifted his head and looked at the clock. He began muttering. "7:00, you have got to be kidding. My brother married a sadist."
Brenda went down the hall and tapped on Julia's door. Julia had already been awakened by the beating on Jerry's door.
"Brenda, I hear you. I will be down in a few minutes."
"Merry Christmas! See you downstairs."
Brenda ran down the steps and put on a Christmas CD. She then found Jax in the kitchen. Jose was off for a few days but had left fruit and homemade breads and pastries for everyone to eat before they went to brunch at the Quartermaines. Jax made coffee while Brenda put the coffeecake in the oven to warm.
A few minutes later, Jerry walked into the kitchen and Jax laughed as he saw him. "You look like the walking dead."
"Thanks. It should be against the law to get up this early on Christmas."
Brenda kissed him on the cheek. "Jerry, this is family time and Jillian's first Christmas. We need to savor every moment of it."
"Brenda, you really want to replicate a Currier and Ives scene?"
"Give the man a prize." Brenda walked out of the kitchen with a tray of glasses and a pitcher of orange juice.
"Jax, you do know that your wife has a few screws loose?"
"Look who is talking."
Brenda and Julia came into the kitchen. "Great everyone is here."
Jerry plastered a grin on his face. "We are all jumping for joy about it."
They brought the food into the living room and Jillian laid on a blanket on the floor. Brenda lit the tree as Jax took pictures and the gifts were passed to Jillian. Brenda opened up the boxes of clothes and unwrapped the stuffed animals and other toys. Jax and Brenda had also bought her a beautiful porcelain doll to start a doll collection for her. Julia had bought Jillian clothes and additional pieces to the Beatrix Potter collection she had started before she was born. Jerry had given Jillian coins to start a coin collection, a kangaroo bank and other gifts.
Brenda put Jillian in the swing with one of her new toys and Jax and Jerry passed out gifts. Julia loved the Chanel suit and Fendi purse Brenda had picked out for her. Jerry was happy with the suede coat and boots from Jax and Brenda. Julia had bought Brenda a leather jacket and earrings and Jax a watch and new pair of Raybans. Jerry had given Jax some diving equipment and Brenda a hi-tech portable stereo system. Jerry went under the tree and pulled out a gift for Julia and handed it to her.
Julia put the package up to her ear. "Should I check to see if it ticking?"
"You never can tell."
Julia opened it up to find a beautiful silk scarf Jerry had bought on his last trip to Paris.
"It is lovely. Thank you." Julia retrieved a package from under the tree and gave it to Jerry.
Jerry shook the box. "Is there arsenic in this?"
Julia looked at him . "You never can tell."
Jerry opened the package to find a box of Cuban cigars. "Cubans. Thank you very much."
Jax looked at Brenda as she was surveying the scene between Julia and Jerry. Jillian then began to fuss.
Julia stood up and walked over to the swing. "Is no one paying attention to you?" Julia lifted the baby from the swing and showed her the lights of the Christmas tree. "Why don't we go upstairs and let Mommy and Daddy open their gifts. We'll take your new toys."
"Thanks Julia. I'll be up soon to get her dressed."
Jerry stood up. "I am going to go up as well and take a shower."
Jerry, Julia and Jillian went upstairs and Brenda rested her head on Jax's shoulder. "It's really Christmas."
"Yes, it is. I guess you are so happy that you don't need anymore gifts."
"Mr. Jacks, you are not going to get off that easy." Brenda bolted off the couch and grabbed several boxes from under the tree. The large items that Ned had brought over last night were now in the hall closet. Jax got up and went to the closet in the den to get the gifts he had been storing at Scott's house. Jax had picked them up yesterday when he had delivered Scott and Serena their gifts.
"Brenda, I know you are dying of anticipation so you go first."
Brenda gave him a cute smile. "Okay, if you insist, but we will alternate opening gifts. Where should I start?"
"The largest box."
Brenda opened it up to find a ski parka, goggles and mittens.
Brenda tried to contain her laughter. "Thank you. These are wonderful."
"For my little snow bunny who won Thao's resort in Cortina."
Brenda pushed the large box over to him and giggled. "Open this."
Jax opened the package to find a ski parka, goggles and mittens. Brenda was now hysterical.
Jax grinned. "I see great minds think alike."
"Evidently, and from the looks of the size of the largest box remaining on each of our piles, in more ways than one."
Jax and Brenda both then opened their boxes containing ski boots and then Brenda went into the hall closet and brought out Jax's skis. Jax took her skis from beneath the couch where he had hidden them. Jax kissed Brenda as they both laughed and then fell onto the couch. "Here's to original gift ideas."
Brenda laughed. "Well, the rest of the boxes are not identical in size so maybe there is still hope yet for an original idea."
"Open these next."
Brenda gasped when she found a Gianfranco Ferre pantsuit and a pair of Gucci calfskin pumps and matching handbag. Brenda handed Jax the next packages where he found an Armani jacket, three new silk ties and several pairs of silk boxers.
"Brenda, I have two gifts left for you but you are going to have to wait on one of them for a little longer."
"I have two left for you as well but they are both here so you should open the next gift. I'll be right back with it." Brenda went into the hall closet and wheeled out the hand truck which carried the gift.
"What in the world?"
This was the easiest way for me to move it. I hope you like it."
Jax unwrapped the gift and laughed. "A slot machine."
"A very special slot machine. Instead of coins it is played with tokens and it pays out in these same tokens. Some of the tokens provide special rewards. Take a look."
Brenda handed him the key and Jax opened up the back of the slot machine. Jax burst into laughter when he read what some the tokens said. Most of the tokens were dollar denominations but there were a few that provided additional rewards. These tokens were marked with the words, "Massage," Shared Bath," "Shared Shower" and "Wildest Fantasy Indulged."
Jax had a playful look in his eyes. "Can I cash these reward tokens in with anyone I choose?"
"Of course, so long as her name is Brenda Barrett Jacks."
Jax took her in his arms. "No other women exists in the world for me. Thank you. Trust me, no one else is ever going to touch this machine. Those are my rewards and only mine."
"Okay, it's my turn again." Jax handed her the last box from her pile. She shrieked when she opened up the diamond and sapphire bracelet. "Jax, it is absolutely stunning. It matches the pendant you gave me when I was pregnant. Will you help me put it on?"
Jax fastened it around her wrist and Brenda kissed him. "Thank you for everything. Here is your final gift."
"Remember you still have one more gift." Jax opened up the box and took a deep breath. He held the double heart-shaped picture frame which contained a photo of Jillian and a photo of Brenda holding Jillian. "Sweetie, it is beautiful."
"Lucy arranged for Chase to come here one day a few weeks ago and he took them. Isn't she gorgeous?"
"Besides her mother, she is the most beautiful thing I have ever seen."
Brenda hugged Jax. "I love you."
"And I love you. It makes things pretty perfect."
The Jacks Residence -- 10:00am
Jax and Jerry carried the suitcases downstairs and boxed up the gifts to take to Alaska. Brenda had already boxed up the gifts they were taking to the Quartermaines. Brenda and Julia were upstairs dressing Jillian. The baby looked beautiful in her red velvet dress and black patent leather shoes.
Brenda had called Felicia and Simone and wished their families a Merry Christmas and then had called the Cerrullos to wish them a happy holiday. Brenda had given the Cerrullo family gifts to Lois to transport to Bensonhurst this afternoon.
The roads were slowly being cleared from last night's snowfall so Jax did not expect any trouble for their trip to the airport or their flight to Alaska. Virgil had been given a few days off so arrangements had been made for a private limousine to be at the house at 12:30 to take them all to the airport.
Brenda came downstairs with Jillian and Julia finished getting dressed herself. Jax took pictures of Brenda and Jillian in front of the tree and then Jerry took pictures of Jax and Brenda with the baby in front of the tree.
Jax looked at his watch. "I am going to go and finish packing my briefcase."
"Okay honey. I am going to go change Jillian and get her coat and then we will meet you down here and get ready to go."
Jax went into the office and Brenda went upstairs. Jerry went into the living room to get some cigars from the box Julia had given him. At the same time Julia came downstairs to get the silk scarf Jerry had given her. It would go perfectly with the dress she was wearing. Julia walked into the living room just as Jerry was coming out. They stopped just before they ran smack into one another. They were in the doorway standing right under the mistletoe.
Jerry looked up. "It looks like this is your lucky day, Ms. Barrett."
"I know I am going to regret asking this but why?"
Jerry smiled smugly. "Look up and see."
Julia raised her eyes and sighed when she saw the mistletoe. "I don't see anything, do you?"
"We Jacks are committed to tradition and tradition dictates that I must kiss you under this mistletoe."
"Let's not and say we did. No one shall be the wiser."
Jerry's face was within inches of Julia's face. "But we will know and that is all that matters."
Before Julia could protest any further, Jerry's lips softly covered hers. It was not like their previous two kisses which were hard and demanding. This kiss was gentle and tender and it lingered. Just as they broke the kiss, they heard Brenda upstairs. Jerry went toward the office and Julia went into the living room and sat on the couch to compose herself. She dreaded the trip to Alaska even more now but mainly she dreaded the way she felt this moment. Why was Jerry Jacks of all people getting to her?
Brenda walked down the stairs and went into the living room. "Julia, are you all right?"
"Yes, I am fine. I just need to go up and fix my make-up and then I will be ready."
Brenda looked at the clock and wondered what was taking Jax so long. She began to hear the sound of bells as she got out the coats. The sound was getting closer. She put Jillian's coat on and called out for Jax to hurry. The bells sounded like they were right out front now. She put Jillian in the car seat carrier. It was definitely bells. The doorbell rang and Jax tiptoed around the corner to catch a glimpse of Brenda.
Brenda walked into the foyer and opened the front door to find a man in a cape and top hat.
"Ma'am, your sleigh is ready."
Brenda's mouth fell wide open at the sight before her. Out in front of the house was an open sleigh drawn by a beautiful horse. Bells were draped around the horse's neck and along the sides of the sleigh. Brenda was speechless. Jax walked into the foyer and told the driver they would be ready in a few minutes.
"Jax, a one-horsed open sleigh with jingle bells."
"A Currier and Ives Christmas wouldn't be complete without a sleigh ride."
"This is the gift you said I had to wait for. I love it and I absolutely love you." Brenda sprang into his arms.
"Are we ready for our ride over to the Quartermaines? Jerry and Julia will bring the car over."
"Ready? Of course I am ready." Jax helped Brenda with her coat and then put his own on before picking up Jillian in the carrier. "Jillian, are you ready for a sleigh ride?"
Julia and Jerry appeared and told them they would meet them at the Quartermaines. Jax lifted Brenda into the sleigh and then handed her the carrier. Jax got into the sleigh and they wrapped the blankets around them as the horse began its trip through the snow to the Quartermaine estate.
Brenda leaned against Jax's shoulder as the horse trotted through the fresh snow. "If this is a dream, I don't ever want to wake up."
"I promise it is not a dream. Merry Christmas Brenda."
They arrived at the Quartermaines and Jax again thanked Ned for his assistance in securing the use of the sleigh. Brenda and Jax gave their gifts to the family and everyone enjoyed brunch. Emily played with Brooke and Jillian as everyone mingled. Even Edward was on his best behavior except when Jerry tried to put a Santa Claus hat on Edward's head.
After brunch, Brenda and Jax wished everyone well and wished Ned and Lois a safe trip to Bensonhurst. Everyone would be together again for the New Year's Eve Party. The Jacks/Barrett contingent headed back to the house and they left for the trip to Alaska. Just as Brenda had wanted, Christmas morning in Port Charles was a special event. It had included love, family, friendship, surprises and joy. She expected Christmas evening in Alaska to be just as wonderful.
The Jacks Homestead -- 9:00pm
The trip to Alaska had been pleasant and uneventful. Jillian had slept a good portion of the way. A car had picked them up at the airstrip and taken them to the ranch. Brenda had smiled when she saw the tree. It was just as she had imagined. Strings of popcorn and cranberries hung on the tree along with the handmade ornaments. A star sat at the top and a train set sat beneath the branches. A blazing fire roared in the fireplace and the snow on the window panes made the inside of the cabin seem even more homey. There was two feet of snow on the ground and the trees and bushes were covered with several inches. The night sky was clear and there seemed to be a million stars in the sky. It was breathtaking.
Jane had made a traditional turkey dinner which had been served shortly after everyone arrived at the house. John told stories of past Christmases and Jax watched Brenda intently listening to every word John spoke. She was trying to cram as much celebrating, reminiscing and traditions as she could into one day. She had over twenty years to make up for.
After dinner, they exchanged gifts. John and Jane loved the photos of Jillian that Chase had taken. Brenda also gave photos to Jerry and Julia. She had withheld giving them out this morning since Jax had not yet seen his gift. Brenda adored the child's rocking chair that Jane and John had given to Jillian. Once the gifts had been exchanged, everyone sat around the fire and drank hot chocolate.
Jerry told Jane about Brenda's overzealous decorating and Christmas spirit. "You should see it Mum, the house looks like the North Pole."
Brenda shook her head at him. "I think you are exaggerating just a tad, Jerry."
"Do you know that John-Boy over there actually took Mary Ellen to cut down their own tree. They didn't go all the way to Waltons' Mountain though."
John and Jane started to laugh. "John-Boy and Mary Ellen, those were the days."
Julia leaned back on the couch. "Jerry is the Scrooge in the bunch."
"That is not true. I upheld the biggest tradition. I drank my share of the eggnog."
Julia rolled her eyes. "Whatever you say, Ebenezier."
An hour later, everyone went upstairs for bed. Jillian was sleeping in Jax and Brenda's room. Julia was next door and Jerry was down the hall. It was cold and all the fireplaces were lit. Brenda and Jax snuggled under the down comforter. The lights were turned off and the house became completely quiet for about thirty seconds until the sound of Jerry's voice was heard.
"Good night Mama, Good night Daddy."
Brenda was laughing into the pillow.
"Good night John-Boy, Good night Mary Ellen."
Jax was shaking his head and looking up at the ceiling as Brenda was hysterical.
"Oh Julia, I forgot you. Good night Grandma."
Brenda pulled the comforter over her head as tears fell from her eyes and Jax put his hand over his face.
Julia's voice was now heard. "Good night Clancy otherwise known as the Waltons' old coon dog."
Jax pulled Brenda into his arms. "Well, this is what you wanted -- a real family Christmas."
"It's everything I wished for and more." Brenda lifted her head and kissed Jax tenderly on the lips. "Now you have really made all my dreams come true. I will never forget this day as long as I live. I love you so much."
Jax stroked Brenda's back as she laid her head on his chest. "As long as I have your love, I have everything. Thank you for giving me everything I ever wanted -- you."
The glow of the fire reflected off their faces as they slept. All was right with the world this evening. They had each other so they had everything.

The Jacks Homestead -- Noon
It had snowed most of the day yesterday so everyone had spent the day in the cabin. Brenda told John and Jane about her ideas for the pediatric unit housing facility. They were very proud of her and promised any help she wanted in connection with her plans. They also were impressed with her efforts to do this on her own. Jax lovingly gazed at Brenda as she had spoken to his parents about the project. She was so sure of herself now. She could finally see what he saw in her and believe in herself. Of all the things Brenda had accomplished in the past year and a half, Jax was the proudest of this feat.
Last night everyone had played cards. Julia and Jerry had gotten into an argument earlier in the day about the role of women vs. men in the business world. Their caustic remarks to each other carried into the poker game, especially when Julia beat Jerry in a particularly competitive hand. Brenda and Jane had spoken about the situation as the evening ended and had agreed that there was something different about Jerry and Julia now. They were even more wary of each other than usual. Brenda was convinced something had happened between them that was scaring them to death.
Today's weather was now clear and everyone was again in the living room except Jillian who was asleep upstairs. Brenda and Jax were going to go snowmobiling after lunch and Jax was getting dressed to check on the equipment. Everyone was again talking about Brenda's project.
Jane sat on the sofa drinking her tea. "Have you decided on a name for the project? I know that you are doing it for Jillian so will it be named after her?"
Jax started to put on his boots. "Yes, sweetie, have you decided yet?"
"Yes, and I have come up with a name with Jillian in mind but it is not exactly named after her. She does not need all that attention."
"What are you thinking about?"
"What do you think of Kanga's Kradle?"
Jax grinned. "Kanga's Kradle. I love it."
Jane smiled. "As do I."
"I thought at least I could recognize part of Jillian's heritage."
Jerry patted Brenda on the arm. "It is perfect for Roo. You just got a bigger donation from me."
John spoke up. "I concur. It is a perfect choice."
Jane raised her tea cup. "A toast to Brenda and Kanga's Kradle. May they both achieve great success and continue to instill love and generosity in the hearts of those they touch. All the best ,my dear. We couldn't be prouder of you."
Jax watched as Brenda's face beamed. Every day he loved her more and every day she brought him more joy. Some days life gave you everything you could ever want.
The Jacks Homestead -- 3:00pm
Jax and Brenda had left a half hour ago to go snowmobiling. Jillian was in the swing in the living room as Julia and Jane sat on the couch talking. John was in the office and Jerry was outside clearing a path to take the jeep out of the garage. As Jane and Julia were talking, Jerry walked in, flinging the door completely open as he entered.
"Jerry, close that door. It is freezing out there. For heavens sake, where is your hat?"
"Mum, you really sound like Mama Walton now."
"Jeremiah."
Julia tried to suppress her laughter at the sound of his full name. She still thought he looked like anything but a Jeremiah.
Jerry looked at Julia. "What's so funny? It is not half as horrendous as Jasper. Mum really must have despised Jax as a baby to give him that atrocious name."
"Stop talking about your brother's name like that. I think it is a wonderful name."
"For a dog maybe."
"Jeremiah Jeb, that's enough."
Jerry closed his eyes and sighed as Julia covered her face with her hands. Jeremiah Jeb Jacks, it was classic. Jerry tore off his coat and gloves. Jane simply sat back and drank her tea.
"Did you get the jeep out? Your father wants you to check on the cottage."
"Yes, I will go in a few minutes."
"Julia, maybe you would like to go with Jerry? You could get some air and a change of scenery. The pond is so beautiful now I really would like you to see it before you leave on Monday."
Jerry was still glaring at Julia over her laughter about his name. "Julia does not want to see the pond, Mum."
"Actually I would enjoy it. Brenda told me how beautiful it was last winter when she and Jax visited. I will go get ready."
Jerry shook his head. He knew he was never going to hear the end of it about his name. Jane smugly smiled as she drank another sip of tea.
Meanwhile Jax was having fits of hysterical laughter himself as Brenda tried to maneuver her snowmobile. As they started on their journey, she was screaming, half out of fear and half from excitement. Her hands were gripped so tightly on the controls, she thought she had stopped all the blood flow to her hands. As she became more accustomed to the feel and power of the machine, Brenda felt more comfortable and started picking up speed. She then started shrieking from the pure excitement and rush of the adventure. She accelerated and waved at Jax as she passed him. Jax laughed as she left a spray of snow in her wake as she headed back toward the house. With her goggles on and her red scarf blowing around her neck, she looked like the Red Baron. Jax caught up with her and narrowly beat her back to the garage.
Jax stopped his snowmobile, took off his goggles and got off as Brenda turned her engine off. She jumped into his arms which only proceeded to cause him to lose his balance and fall backwards into the snow with her on top of him.
"That was incredible."
"I take it you enjoyed yourself?"
Brenda put her hands on his chest. "I loved it. I almost beat you."
"Not this time, Mrs. Jacks. I am still the Red Baron in this family."
"Wait until next year."
Jax pushed the hair out of her face. Her cheeks were completely flushed from the cold and the wind was blowing the hair not covered by her hat but she was radiant. "Has there ever been a challenge you haven't met? I am going to have to find something that you are really bad at and we will do that next."
"Afraid of the competition, huh? Poor baby."
Jax rolled over so that Brenda was now on her back. "Me afraid? Never."
Brenda was giggling. "Jax, get me up. It's cold."
"I'll warm you up."
Jax kissed her and suddenly it felt like it was the dead of summer. She was filled with the warmth of the desert sun. When they were finally breathless from the intoxication of the kiss, Jax got up and then helped Brenda to her feet. They walked hand in hand back to the cabin.
Jane and John were in the living room when they entered. "Hello you two. How was the ride?"
"Fantastic. How is the baby?"
"Sleeping like an angel."
Brenda smiled. "She feels very comfortable here. I am so glad."
"So are we, dear."
Jax took off his coat. "Where are Jerry and Julia?"
"They went to check on the cottage."
"Together?"
"Son, your mother had her hand in this."
Brenda took off her hat and gloves. "Good. Someone needs to get this show on the road."
Jax helped Brenda off with her jacket and boots and then took off his boots and they went upstairs to change.
Outside, Jerry was driving toward to the garage and Julia was laughing for the third time about his name. "I still can't believe it. Jeremiah Jeb."
"You sound like a broken record. When are you going to keep your big mouth shut?"
"When you change your name."
Jerry pulled into the garage and slammed the jeep door shut. "If you think I am going to open the door for you, you are nuts."
"I wouldn't even begin to think you would ever be such a gentleman, Jeremiah Jeb." Julia got out of the jeep laughing again.
"Okay, the joke is over."
"Not until I say it is."
Julia started walking toward the house and a snowball hit her in the back. She turned around and Jerry hit her with one right in the chest. "You are going to pay for that, Jeremiah."
Julia picked up a snowball and threw it at him. It missed badly which caused Jerry to get hysterical. "They don't teach you society types how to throw a snowball, do they?"
Julia picked up another handful of snow and threw it at him hitting him right in the face. Julia was laughing at him until he hit her again in the arms. They were both laughing and screaming at each other.
Inside the house, Brenda heard the commotion and went to the window of the bedroom. She saw Jerry chasing Julia around one of the pine trees in the front yard.
Brenda ran to the top of the stairwell. "Jane, come quick."
Jax looked out the window and saw Brenda run back into the room. When his mother came in, Jax shook his head. Then John appeared in the doorway. "What is the ruckus up here?"
"Come to the window, Pa."
John walked to the window and looked out and then walked back to Jax. "They are having a snowball fight. What is so exciting about that?"
Jane shook her head. "Men."
Jax stared at the Brenda and his mother in amazement. "Dad, what we have here is two lunatics hanging out the window."
Brenda turned around and put her hands on her hips. "Jax, don't you want your brother to be happy?"
"I think my brother is a better judge than the two of you as to whom or what makes him happy."
Meanwhile, outside the window, Jerry caught up to Julia from behind at the pine tree. "I've got you. You are going to have to pay the price now."
Julia could not believe she was shrieking like a teenager but she was. "Let go of me."
"You are my prisoner and you will remain so until you promise never to say my real name again."
Julia was laughing. "Forget it."
"Fine. You will have to pay the consequences." In a flash, Jerry twirled Julia around so she was facing him.
Julia whispered. "What are the consequences?"
"Only this." Jerry pulled her to him and their lips met.
Brenda's mouth fell open at the window. "He's kissing her."
"What?" Jax and John ran to the window as both Brenda and Jane rolled their eyes.
After a few moments, Jerry released Julia's lips. They both were dazed from the kiss. They also were both soaking wet and the sun was quickly falling. They stood a few inches from each other until Jerry finally spoke. "We should go inside. It is getting dark and you are soaking wet."
Jerry took Julia's hand and led her toward the house. Neither of them really was aware of their movements.
Brenda looked out the window again and saw Julia and Jerry getting closer to the house. "They are coming inside."
"Nobody say a word. Pa and I will go downstairs. You two come down when you have finished getting changed."
Jane and John reached the bottom of the steps as Jerry opened the door. Jane noticed that they both look dazed. "You two are soaking wet. Get out of those clothes before you both catch your death of cold."
"That is a good idea, Jane. I will be down later."
"You should take a nice hot bath, Julia. Dinner won't be ready for another hour."
"Thanks Jane."
Julia went up the stairs as Jerry took off his boots. "How were things at the cottage?"
"Fine Dad. Roof still looks very steady."
"Good. We are in for another storm tomorrow."
"Where are Jax and Brenda?"
"Upstairs changing."
"Well, I am going up to do the same. I will see you at dinner."
Jerry went upstairs and then Jax and Brenda came down. Brenda walked over to Jane. "Well."
"I don't think they are ready to deal with their feelings but they took a step toward something today."
"That is a major improvement from the past few months. Let's just hope it is the first step of many."
The Jacks Homestead -- 11:00pm
After dinner both Jerry and Julia had gone upstairs to their rooms and had only appeared to say good night a few hours later. Jillian had been awake all evening and had been passed between Jax, Brenda, Jane and John. She was now sleeping. Brenda had taken a bath and slipped on her burgundy silk pajamas. Jax was checking the fireplace for the evening. The winds were howling outside. Another storm was on its way.
Jax climbed into bed and Brenda arranged his pillows. He pulled the comforter over them and pulled Brenda into his arms. Jax kissed the top of her head. "You always smell so good after a bath."
"Thanks. You are so warm. It feels so good being in you arms."
"It feels good to have you in my arms."
"What do you think is going happen with Jerry and Julia?"
"Sweetie, I don't know. I think we have to let them handle it."
"I just think they could be so happy together. I know on the surface they seem so different but they really aren't."
"My brother can be very stubborn."
"So can my sister. Has Jerry ever been truly in love?"
"I don't believe so. He never let himself get that close."
"Julia has but she was hurt very badly. I fear that she is afraid to let anyone get that close again."
"Since we can't do anything to resolve this situation tonight, I have an alternate plan for this evening's activity."
Brenda smiled. "What would that be, Mr. Jacks?"
Jax had a familiar glint in his eyes. "I want to show my wife just how much I love her."
"She will be a very lucky lady then."
"Extremely lucky."
Jax rolled onto his side and Brenda put her arms around his neck. His lips quickly overtook her and she moaned as his tongue rolled across the inside of her mouth. He kissed her cheek and then ran his tongue along the inside of her ear. She was already leaving fingernail marks on his back as he nuzzled her neck. Jax unbuttoned her pajama top and his mouth hungrily moved to her chest. Brenda was running her fingers through his hair as Jax removed her pajama bottoms. She was trembling now in anticipation of their trip to paradise. Their lips met again and the passion was on overload. Jax removed his pajama bottoms as he moved on top of her. The feel of his body against hers caused her to moan as her hips moved to plead with him to join her. Her hands moved to the headboard and they were joined by Jax's as their bodies became one and their souls united.
Their lovemaking was intense, exhausting and completely fulfilling. As they slept through the night in each other's arms, they dreamt of their passion and love. It made for a completely blissful sleep for both of them.

J & J Jacks -- 11:00am
Everyone had returned from Alaska on Monday. Jane and John had promised to return to Port Charles within the next few months. For their last day and half in Alaska after the snowball fight and subsequent kiss, Jerry and Julia had each kept to themselves. Jerry concentrated on his chess game with Jax and Julia spent time with Brenda about some ideas for Kanga's Kradle and spent time with Jillian. Besides the Jerry and Julia situation, the trip had been great. Jax finally seemed to feel at home again in his parents' house and Jillian seemed to love the surroundings. Brenda's Christmas holiday was everything she had dreamt about and John and Jane thoroughly enjoyed the visit.
Julia was in her office reading the latest business plan for the second phase of Canadian Timber. She reached the cost projections section and slammed her hand onto the desk. She stormed out of her office and went to Jerry's office. Francesca told Julia that Jerry was in the conference room. Julia walked into the conference room and Jerry was leaning back in his chair with his back to her. She walked in and shoved the back of the chair forward.
Jerry turned to her. "What the hell do you think you are doing?"
"What do I think I am doing? What do you think you are doing? Why are these cost projections in this plan? You know Andrew and I spent three days pulling new numbers together. Where are they?"
"I told you last week not to run those numbers. I am satisfied with the original projections. Those new numbers are too risky and leave too much room for investigation and we do not have the time for that."
"They are not too risky and you know it. Andrew and Ernst & Young agreed with that position. They are your accountants; this is what you are paying them for. Why are you disregarding their advice?"
"First of all Andrew Burns is not my accountant. He is your lackey or maybe boy-toy is a better word. I am sure he will make quite an impression at the Quartermaines this evening. Can he stay up until midnight or does he have a curfew?"
"You are completely insane. What the hell is the matter with you?"
"Nothing is the matter with me. I told you last week I would not use those numbers and I meant it. Maybe now you will learn that I mean what I say."
"You are doing this to save your pride? This is unbelievable. You are costing yourself money simply because you refuse to change your mind. Is this some type of religious belief of yours?"
"I have heard enough. My decision has been made and it is final. I don't care what you think about this issue."
Jax walked out of his office into the conference room. "What is going on in here? They can hear you yelling down the hall?"
"No problem, Jax. I was just leaving. I have no desire to even be in the same room with this man, never mind talk to him."
Julia left the conference room and walked back to her office. She slammed the door behind her as she entered her office.
"Well, what did you do now, Jerry?"
"Me? Why is it always me? She is the one who came in here like a caged lion."
"You have been out of sorts since this morning. I don't understand your problem with Andrew. Why does it matter that he is going to the Quartermaines."
"I don't care about Andrew. He is just another pencil pushing stuffed shirt."
"Whatever your problem is, find a way to solve it. I will not have this office disrupted by two adults screaming at each other and acting like six year olds. There is a better way, find it."
Jerry got a smug look on his face. "You are right, Jax, and I just figured out how to do it. Thanks."
Jerry went back to his office as Jax just shook his head. He could definitely live without days like these.
An hour later, the office was officially closed for the holiday but Julia and Andrew were in the conference room finishing up some work on Atlantic. Jerry walked by and saw them in the conference room. He then walked back to his office and told Francesca to go home for the day. Jerry walked Francesca into the hallway directly in view of the conference room door. He knew that they were in plain view of Julia. At the same time, Jax walked out of his office but stopped before turning the corner when he saw Jerry and Francesca in the corridor.
"Francesca, let me help you with your coat."
"Grazie Signore Jacks."
"I will pick you up at 8:30pm tonight. It will be a wonderful evening."
"Thank you for the invitation. I am looking forward to it. I just hope my dress is appropriate."
"Cara, you will be the most beautiful woman there."
"Arrivederci Signore Jacks."
"Arrivederci Francesca."
Francesca left the building and Jerry returned to his office. Julia was seething in the conference room. How dare he talk about Andrew being a boy-toy when he was dating his own secretary. Andrew was only her escort and nothing more. Jerry Jacks was nothing but a scoundrel. Julia excused herself and raced back to her office.
Jax wanted to shoot Jerry right on the spot. Jerry knew exactly what he was going on it was obviously working. First Julia was mad. Now she was definitely upset. This evening was going to be trouble. Jax could feel it and he had a headache already. He went back to his office to call Brenda to warn her of the impending battle.
The Jacks Residence -- 2:00pm
The Quartermaines' New Years Eve party was this evening. Lois, Brooke and Robin were at the house for lunch. Lois was even happier than before Christmas. Ned had made quite an impression by choosing to spend the majority of the holidays with friends and Lois' family rather than the Quartermaines. Lois was even more surprised at the fact that Edward had abided by Ned's choices without any altercations. Lois was feeling more hopeful than ever about working things out with Ned. Robin and Jason had spent the morning with Mac, Felicia and the girls and the evening with Sonny and Mike.
"Let me see this bracelet Jax gave you." Brenda passed the bracelet to Robin. "It is beautiful."
"So is that strand of pearls that Jason bought you. He has good taste."
"He does and Sonny swears he had nothing to do with Jason's choice of a gift."
Brenda looked at Lois. "Did the Q's spoil Brooke rotten?"
Lois nodded. "Of course. Some things won't change.
"I was with Ned when he bought the rocking horse. It is gorgeous."
Lois couldn't help from smiling. "It is. You said something happened in Alaska with Julia and Jerry. Spill it."
Brenda got a wicked grin on her face. "All I know is that they left the cabin together and then got into a snowball fight in the front yard and he ended up kissing her."
"You saw them? What were you doing peeping out the windows?"
Brenda grinned. "Of course."
Lois patted her on the arm. "Good, I'm proud of you. So they kissed. Geez Louise, it is about time. What happened then?"
"They have pretty much avoided each other since then."
"Well, that is a big surprise."
Robin picked up Jillian from the floor. "What is their problem? Don't they know how precious time is and that they should not waste a moment?"
"Robin, they both need to learn that lesson."
"Yeah, but they will both be at the Q's tonight for the party. Maybe that will help."
"That is another problem."
"What problem, Brenda?"
"Before Christmas, Julia asked her new assistant to accompany her. Andrew knows a lot of the guests from his work at J & J Jacks and at his accounting firm. I don't really think it is a real date per se."
"Probably not. He is just her escort so what is the problem?"
"Jax called me a little while ago to warn me that Jerry and Julia had some type of disagreement over a business matter after Jerry found out that Andrew was escorting her to the party. Jerry then decided to invite his secretary to the party. He then made sure Julia was aware of his companion for the evening."
"Holy Toledo. Tonight may be more interesting than I thought. He's really got it bad, doesn't he?"
Brenda nodded. "Yes, I think they both do."
Robin laughed. "I almost wish I was going to be there. There could easily be fireworks."
Brenda turned to Robin. "Believe me, you are safer at Luke's. I just hope this isn't a nightmare."
Lois shook her head. "Don't worry, it won't be the first or the last time there are fireworks at a Quartermaine gala and I don't mean the fourth of July. They seem to thrive on it so they probably will thank them for the explosion."
Both Brenda and Robin laughed and the friends spent the rest of the afternoon together before the festivities of the evening began.
The Quartermaine Estate -- 9:30pm
Jerry and Julia had completely avoided each other once they had returned home. Jerry left to pick up his date before Julia had finished dressing. Andrew arrived at the house and met Brenda and Jillian. He and Julia then left for the party. Jax and Brenda were bringing Jillian to the Quartermaines as Emily and one of her friends were watching Brooke, Serena and Jillian in the East wing of the mansion.
The party was in full swing. It was the usual black tie affair. Brenda looked beautiful in a low-cut teal satin dress with a high side slit. Jax wore a matching teal cummerbund and tie. Edward was being a relatively gracious host as he had only once called Jax a "corporate destroyer and swindler."
Brenda and Jax were talking to Lois and Ned when Jerry and Francesca walked into the room. Brenda saw them first. "Is that her?"
"Yes, sweetie, that is Francesca."
Ned did a double take. "Oh my." Lois elbowed him in the side.
Brenda took a sip of her club soda. "I think I will have veto power on any female J & J Jacks hires from now on."
Jax laughed and put his arm around Brenda. "You know that I wouldn't look twice at any other woman."
Jerry brought Francesca over and introduced her to Brenda, Lois and Ned. They exchanged pleasantries and Jerry took Francesca to meet Edward and Lila. Brenda looked over at Julia who was in the corner of the room talking to Scott, Justus and Andrew. Julia was watching every move Jerry made. Lois noticed Julia as well.
"Yeah Bren. She has it bad."
The music started and Jax, Brenda, Ned, Lois, A.J. and Keesha took the lead and began the dancing. Francesca and Lucy went to powder their noses and Andrew asked Julia to dance. Brenda looked over Jax's shoulder at Jerry as he watched Julia and Andrew dancing.
"Now it is your brother's turn to be imitating a hawk. This is ridiculous."
"They are going to have to work this out themselves. I just want to get out of here without any bloodshed."
Lucy and Francesca came back into the room and Jerry danced with Francesca. Julia and Andrew were still on the dance floor. Brenda went up to check on Jillian. She gave Jax instructions to play referee while she was gone. There were no altercations. Julia and Andrew went to get a drink as Brenda returned to the party.
"Any bloodshed?"
"Not yet. How is Jillian?"
"She is asleep finally."
Jerry and Francesca left the dance floor and started to mingle. A few moments later Brenda looked over her shoulder and sighed. "Red alert. Enemies approaching." Jax turned around to see Jerry and Francesca walk over to join Julia and Andrew.
"Julia and Andrew, how are you this evening?"
Julia remained silent so Andrew spoke up. "Fine Jerry. It is nice to see you Francesca. You look lovely."
"Thank you Mr. Burns. Ms. Barrett, you look beautiful this evening."
"Thank you Francesca. If you will excuse us, I want to show Andrew the terrace. It is such a beautiful night. Enjoy your evening."
Jerry watched Julia lead Andrew out of the room to get their coats. They then went out on the terrace. Brenda and Jax stood across the room and shook their heads as they watched the scene. Stubbornness was winning out again.
The Quartermaine Estate -- 11:45pm
As midnight approached, the party continued. There had been no fireworks nor any bloodshed. Jerry and Julia had avoided each other after Julia and Andrew returned from the terrace. Lois and Brenda had just checked on the girls and everyone was still sleeping.
Edward asked everyone to gather around for a toast to ring out 1997. Jax put his arms around Brenda's waist and Brenda looked down and smiled as she saw Ned take Lois' hand. As Edward spoke, both Jax and Brenda flashed back to the events of the prior twelve months -- the confusion about Miranda and Sonny to start the year; then the kidnapping when they almost lost everything; and finally Miranda's web of deception. Brenda tightened Jax's arms around her. Any of the three events could have split them apart forever but they were here stronger than ever.
Then Jax and Brenda saw visions of the joyous events of the year: finding out about the pregnancy; the wedding ceremony in Bensonhurst and the honeymoon in Kronos and Alaska; the new house; the anniversary on the yacht; the opening of the J & J Jacks offices in Port Charles; Julia's arrival in Port Charles; Jillian's birth and christening; New Orleans; and the holidays. The troubled times could not touch the joyous moments. 1997 had been the most wonderful year of both Jax and Brenda's life.
The clock struck midnight and 1998 had arrived. Jax and Brenda rang in the new year with a tender kiss. Confetti was tossed and hugs were shared as friends and family rejoiced. Lila gave a toast for the new year and the sound of clinking glasses was heard.
Jax took Brenda's hand and led her upstairs to the guest room where Jillian was sleeping. As they approached the crib, Jillian smiled at them. Jax lifted her into his arms and kissed her before handing her to Brenda.
Brenda kissed Jillian's forehead. "Happy New Year angel!"
Jax put his arm around Brenda. "As incredible as this past year has been, I know that 1998 is going to be even better for all of us."
There they were the perfect picture of a loving family. Brenda closed her eyes as she rested her head against Jax's shoulder while Jillian rested against Brenda's shoulder. The love they felt was the greatest gift that they could ever share. They all knew that the new year would bring to each of them an abundance of love and other gifts from the heart.
