The Blue Mountain Lake Inn -- 9:00am
Brenda was watching Jax sleep. When she had awakened an hour earlier, Brenda had found herself almost completely on top of Jax. She was clutching his chest as if she were holding on for dear life. She was not going to let him out of her reach after the hell of the past few days. Jillian had slept in later than ever. Brenda knew that the baby had felt her apprehension and stress and was just as exhausted as they all had been.
After she had fed Jillian, Brenda put the baby back in the crib with one of her kangaroos. Jillian was perfectly content as she cooed and smiled. A wave of relief had hit Brenda as she watched her daughter. Her little girl was going to have her loving father around to watch her grow up. Again, Brenda looked back at the bed to make sure Jax was really there and that this was all just not a dream. Brenda looked out the window and saw the falling snow and suddenly she knew her emotions were going to get the better of her.
Brenda raced into the bathroom and turned on the faucet to drown out her sobs. Three days of trying to be strong and in control had taken their toll on her. She was no longer able to hold in all the pain, anxiety, fear and relief she had felt over the past few days. Everything came out in a flurry of emotion and tears. Brenda was shaking as she was hit with the gravity of what could have been. She could have lost her entire world in a manner of minutes.
Jax awakened to the muffled sounds of her sobs. He quickly got out of bed, checked on Jillian and then walked into the bathroom. Jax immediately took Brenda in his arms and held her in what could only be compared to a death grip. She buried her head in his chest as her tears freely fell. Jax turned off the water and gently lifted her into his arms.
He carried Brenda over to the bed and sat down with her in his lap. She tightened her arms around his neck and rested her head on his shoulder. Jax rubbed her back as her sobs finally began to subside. "It's okay, sweetie. Let it all out."
Brenda tried to catch her breath as Jax gave her a handful of kleenex. She did not want to let go of him. He ran his fingers through her hair and kissed the top of her head. "I'm here Brenda and I am not leaving you or our little girl."
Brenda finally pulled away from him slightly. "I'm sorry that I am such an emotional wreck this morning."
Jax kissed her forehead and then kissed away the tears from her cheeks. "Don't you ever apologize for that. The past three days have been torture for all of us and I know how brave you were. Jerry and my parents told me how strong you were. You were there for Jillian and my family and me. I couldn't love you more if I tried and I am not going anywhere."
Brenda hugged him again. "You better not because I know now that there is no way I could live without you."
Jillian cooed and then laughed as if to ensure that her parents remembered she was in the room. Both Jax and Brenda laughed and she got up and walked over to the crib and picked up the baby. Brenda walked over to Jax and sat back down on his lap and then put Jillian in her lap. Jax wrapped his arms around Brenda and the baby and Jillian gripped his index finger in her hand. Jax rested his chin on Brenda's shoulder and kissed her neck. "We are all here and we all are okay. I love you both."
Brenda closed her eyes and reveled in the purity of this moment. "We love you too."
The Blue Mountain Lake Inn -- 2:00pm
The snow had stopped and the sun was now out. The airport runways were slowly being cleared to reopen this afternoon. Jax and Jerry had taken a helicopter to the plane to survey the damage. Mechanics would fly in the next morning to thoroughly check the aircraft before it was taken back to Port Charles. Chuck Yeager was getting the jet ready for everyone's return trip to Port Charles later this afternoon. Brenda had finished packing and Jillian was sleeping when Julia knocked at the door.
"I wondered if you needed any help?"
Brenda showed Julia into the suite. They sat in the living area of the suite in order not to disturb Jillian. "No thanks. I am just finishing up. Jillian is sleeping and once Jerry and Jax get back, we can head home."
"Brenda, I can't tell you how happy I am that everything worked out so well."
Brenda sighed. "I know. I can't thank you enough for all your help and support. I know Jerry appreciated it as well even though he may never admit it."
"No, Jerry has expressed his gratitude. We had dinner last night and he was actually very appreciative."
Brenda did a slight doubletake when Julia discussed dinner but she bit her tongue and decided not to press the subject at this particular moment. "I am sorry that our little emergency disrupted your plans to move into the loft this weekend."
Julia smiled. "I have waited this long, waiting until next weekend won't kill me. It gives me an extra week with everyone even though I know you are sick of seeing my face every day."
Brenda laughed. "Nonsense. I am really going to miss you and you know that. We all will."
Jax and Jerry walked into the suite from their trip to the landing site. Brenda jumped up and hugged Jax before he even took off his parka. "How did it go?"
"With the exception of the radio, I don't see any other problems. She started okay but the mechanics will be out tomorrow to give her a thorough inspection."
Jerry took off his coat and Brenda caught the quick gaze he gave Julia. "Brenda, I still can't believe you found that site. The clearing is not very large and it was beyond the ten mile search area."
"Let's just say we were all very fortunate that Elizabeth was such an excellent pilot and that we chose the right area to expand the search."
Jax smiled at Brenda. "Have you seen either Elizabeth or Jack today? I want to thank them again for everything."
Brenda shook her head. "It is very strange. The desk clerk said they checked out last night but I do not know how that was possible. It was snowing and dark and they had only arrived yesterday morning. It really does not make any sense. It's almost as if they were only at the inn to help find you."
Jax grinned at Brenda. "Maybe they were just another element of the miracle. That is how they both referred to it, isn't it?"
Brenda kissed Jax on the cheek. "All I know is that you are a miracle, Mr. Jacks."
Jerry rolled his eyes at the two of them. "I think I have had enough of this lovefest. I need to finish packing before we head out."
Brenda swatted Jerry on the arm. "Such a romantic. We were hoping to have some of our influence rub off on you."
Jerry chuckled. "That will be the day. I will see you all in an hour."
Brenda shook her head. "Good-bye Romeo."
Jerry walked out of the suite and Brenda turned around and saw the look on Julia's face when he left the room. Brenda slyly smiled. Maybe things were just starting to get interesting again.
Jax put his arm around Brenda. "I am going to get changed and then call the airport again and make sure we are still on schedule. I'll check on the baby for you."
"Thanks honey."
Brenda sat back down on the couch and was beaming. Julia smiled at the happiness her sister was exuding. "Brenda, everyone should be as happy as you are now."
Brenda looked at Julia. "I wish you were."
"So do I. I am not ashamed to admit that I don't think I have ever been more envious of anyone in my life."
"You can be this happy, Julia, but only if you are willing to open yourself up to the possibility."
"Yes, to the possibility of getting my heart broken."
"Or to the possibility of getting your heart protected and fulfilled by the love of someone. You have to take the risk for a chance at the grand prize. Aren't you tired of all the walls you have built around yourself?"
"Yes, but I wouldn't know how to tear them down now."
"You will just have to take it one day at a time and tear them down brick by brick. I see how you are with Jillian. You love her without limits. I also see how you are with me and those bricks had to come down for us to get to the point we are right now sitting here. You can do anything you set your mind to, Julia."
Julia could only shake her head and smile. "Since when did you get so philosophical?"
Brenda laughed. "After being run over and having your heart trampled a few times, your outlook changes. If Jax hadn't come into my life, I don't believe that I could be saying any of this now. In a weak moment when I didn't even realize what I was doing, I let him enter my heart. A few of those bricks were down and it was over. Once he was there, I couldn't let him go. I wouldn't let him go. He has become such a part of me now that losing him would mean losing myself."
"I know it worked for you. I am just not so sure about me."
"Give it a try, Julia. It will be the only way to know for sure."
Julia took a deep breath. "I guess we will just have to see. In the meantime, I better get ready to go. I will see you shortly. Call me if you need any help."
Brenda hugged Julia. "Okay. We will see you soon. Thanks."
"Thank you Brenda."
Brenda smiled once Julia had left the suite. Something truly told her that things were just about to get very interesting.
The Jacks Residence -- 10:00pm
Everyone had arrived back at the house earlier this evening. Home had never felt so good for Brenda. Lois and Ned had stopped by to make sure that Jax was really all right. Everyone was still recovering from the stress of the past few days so after dinner, Julia and Jerry had gone upstairs. Jax and Brenda were spending some quiet time together in the den.
Jax was laying on the couch with his head in Brenda's lap. He rested his eyes as Brenda massaged his temples. She was reliving the moments of the past three days starting with Jerry and Julia's announcement in this very room three evenings ago. Brenda knew that one day this would all be a distant memory but right now she still had to convince herself at times that the nightmare was over.
She brushed away a strand of hair that had fallen onto Jax's forehead. Brenda smiled as she looked down at her prince. She still was amazed at how much she loved him. Brenda thought back to her conversation with Julia at the inn. Maybe the best thing to come out of this whole nightmare would be Julia finally deciding that a chance at happiness was worth the risk. Brenda knew that there had been some type of breakthrough between Jerry and Julia. Maybe a crisis was what they needed. Brenda had seen the looks which passed between them on the plane and at dinner. They were almost friendly toward one another.
Jax reached up and took Brenda's hand in his. He brought her hand to his lips and kissed it and then kissed each of her fingers. "Are you ready to go up?"
Brenda traced his jawline with her fingers. "Yes, I want to spend the night in your arms."
Jax smiled at her and his eyes reflected the love he felt in his heart for her. "Why don't I build a fire and we can spend the night in front of the fireplace in each other's arms."
Brenda beamed. "Just like Christmas Eve?"
"It feels like Christmas being back here with you and Jillian."
Brenda lowered her head and kissed him. "Every day we spend together feels like Christmas to me."
Jax and Brenda went upstairs and she checked on Jillian and got ready for bed as Jax built the fire. Brenda put down the blankets and pillows and took the spare comforter from the closet shelf. Jax took her hand and helped ease her down to the blankets. He laid down beside her and pulled the comforter over the two of them. Brenda was trembling.
"Sweetie, are you warm enough?"
"Yes." Brenda gazed at him and whispered to him. "I need you, Jax."
Brenda reached out her arms and pulled Jax to her so that his head was resting on her chest. Jax moaned at the feel of the fullness of her breasts beneath his cheek. Brenda ran her fingers through his thick locks as she pressed his cheek deeper into her chest. Jax breathing became heavier and he lifted his head to unbutton her satin nightshirt. He dropped a baby kiss on the exposed skin as he unfastened each button. As the last button was uncovered, he pushed the satin material so the nightshirt fell from both of her shoulders.
Jax's eyes reflected the passion burning inside him. He began his exploration of her. He slowly traced his finger along the outline of each of her breasts. His hands and mouth bestowed sweet torture to her and Brenda bit her bottom lip and moaned from the pleasure. Jax slowly caressed and stroked the softness of her skin as he whispered words of love to her. Brenda gasped as the trail of sensual kisses Jax trailed along her chest.
Brenda was crying out his name as he finally lifted his head from the softness of her chest. Brenda captured his mouth and her lips met his with a scintillating kiss. Brenda used the tip of her tongue to part his lips and then her tongue met his for a fast paced tango. She was on fire. Brenda shifted her body beneath him to feel him closer to her. She needed to feel all the love they could share. Her hands moved to his buttocks. She arched her back as her hands massaged the firmness of his taut muscles.
Jax was murmuring her name as Brenda's hands did their own exploring. He gasped as her fingers lovingly caressed him. She moaned as Jax's control was lost. He loudly groaned as he moved over her and made them one in both body and soul. Brenda cried out as Jax gave her every ounce of the love he felt for her. They moved in unison at a frenzied pace. Neither could catch their breath and their movements became animalistic. Brenda's fingernails tore into Jax's back as they felt the earth move beneath them.
They were both exhausted and breathless as Jax rolled off of her. Perspiration was pouring off both of them and they were each trying to control their breathing. They were both amazed at the passion and hunger than had just transpired between them. Neither Jax nor Brenda had realized just how much they had needed each other tonight.
Jax reached over and took Brenda in his arms. "Are you all right?"
She stroked his cheek. "Yes. What about you?"
"Besides missing some skin from my back, I am great."
Brenda tried to stifle a laugh. "Sorry."
Jax kissed her forehead. "Don't be. Mrs. Jacks, you were quite the tiger this evening."
Brenda smiled at him. "Let's just say I had plenty of inspiration."
Jax wrapped the comforter around her as she snuggled deeper into his arms. "Brenda, I love you and I am not going anywhere."

The Jacks Residence -- 9:00am
After the events in the Adirondacks, the past week had seemed uneventful. Canadian Timber and Atlantic Shipping as well as the new Ontario deal were progressing and keeping everyone on their toes at the offices of J & J Jacks. Brenda had met with the construction engineer again about the renovations necessary for the Wellington Hotel to be used as the facility for Kanga's Kradle. Brenda had opened the office for Kanga's Kradle and two PCU students were splitting the office administration duties. Brenda was starting back to work at Jacks' Cosmetics next week and L&B Records was promoting the revival tour for Eddie Maine and the Idle Rich.
Boxes were lined up in the foyer awaiting to be loaded onto the truck. Today the movers were coming to move Julia into the loft. Her bedroom furniture from London had been shipped earlier in the week. Lois was going to watch Jillian as Brenda and Jax were going to spend the afternoon at the loft helping Julia get organized. Jose had made everyone a special breakfast since this would be the last morning Julia would be at the house as a resident. Jerry looked over at Julia sitting across the table from him. She did not look like the typical Julia. Her hair was in a ponytail and she had on a turtleneck sweater and a pair of tight jeans. He was so used to seeing her more formal side even on the weekends at the house. He immediately noticed how well she filled out the jeans.
Jax was pouring himself another glass of orange juice. "Are you excited, Julia?"
Julia took a deep breath. "Yes, but I know I will feel much better when I am all settled. I still have quite a bit of furniture to buy."
Brenda looked up from pushing the food around her full plate. She had no appetite this morning. "I don't want you to forget where we live. I want you and Jillian to spend a lot of time together so I will expect you to be a very frequent visitor."
Julia smiled. "I promise I will be here often and you need to promise to visit me at the loft on a regular basis. It is not that far from either here or the office so you will have no excuse."
Jax knew how sad Brenda was about Julia moving out. He reached under the table and took her hand. Their eyes met and Brenda smiled at him.
The movers arrived and began carrying the boxes from the foyer, the basement and the guest room upstairs. Everyone finished breakfast and got up to leave the dining room.
Brenda picked up Jillian from the swing. "I am going to change the baby and pack her bag and then Jax and I will drop her off at the gate house and meet you over at the loft."
"Okay. The movers are about finished so I will hurry up and finish packing what I am going to bring over in the car."
"Brenda and I will have room in the 4-Runner."
Jerry walked behind Julia. "I also have room in my trunk and back seat."
Brenda turned around. "I did not know you were going to honor us with your presence today. I didn't think manual labor was high on your list."
Jerry grinned and pointed at Julia. "It's not but I figured it would get her out of here faster. Anything for a good cause."
Julia laughed. "Just for that remark, you can load and unload all my crystal and china. That includes washing them by hand."
Julia started walking up the stairs with Jerry following her. "I am not getting dish pan hands even for a good cause."
"We'll see about that, Jerry Jacks, or should I say Jeremiah."
"You are going to pay for that."
Julia squealed as she ran up the rest of the stairs before Jerry could catch her.
Jax was stunned at the bottom of the stairs. "What just happened here?"
Brenda was beaming. "The start of the demolition of two sets of brick walls."
Jax gave Brenda a look of confusion. "What?"
"I'll explain later. For now, just be prepared for a change in your brother. Romance should have quite an effect on him."
Julia's Loft -- 2:00pm
Brenda had spent some time over the past few weeks with Julia helping her with some decorating ideas for the loft. The loft was wide open and bright and gave off a very airy appearance so they had chosen pastels for the decor. Yellow, pale blue and light green were the predominant colors selected for the design work. There were beautiful hardwood floors throughout the loft and Julia was excited about her new home.
The movers had just left the loft after bringing in all the boxes and the few pieces of furniture that Julia had kept at Jax and Brenda's house. Julia and Brenda were now driving Jerry and Jax crazy by constantly having the men rearrange the bedroom furniture.
Jax rolled his eyes at them. "Are you sure this is where you want the dresser? This is where it was originally placed."
Brenda shook her head. "No, it was originally placed about a foot and half to the left."
Jerry began muttering. "Pardon us. We did not realize that a dresser had to be moved five times from one side of the room to the other and back again before it could be moved a whole eighteen inches from where it started from."
Julia put her hands on her hips. "Jerry, you have no sense of style."
"Julia, you do not have an aching back."
Brenda put up her hands. "Okay. Leave it there. We will work with it there."
The pizza deliveryman arrived and everyone sat on the dining room floor and ate lunch.
Jax raised his soda can. "A toast to Julia's new home. May it bring you endless happiness."
Brenda spoke up. "May it be filled with love and joy."
Jerry raised his slice of pizza. "May it be filled with a dining room table and chairs or at least a rug."
Brenda and Jax laughed as Julia shook her head at Jerry.
Two hours later, Brenda and Julia had finished putting away the dishes in the kitchen cabinets while Jax and Jerry had assembled a set of bookcases for the living room. Brenda and Julia walked into the living room.
"You finished assembling two of the bookcases already?"
Jerry smirked. "We are really very talented."
Julia rolled her eyes. "I know. A legend in your own mind."
"Hey, hey. There is another bookcase here that needs to be assembled so I would watch it with those comments. This place is going to look barren enough as it is. You certainly can't afford to lose one of the few furnishings you have for this room."
Julia shook her head. "You know that the living room furniture is being delivered next week. This is just a temporary situation."
Jerry looked around the room. "All I know is that you won't be inviting 'Better Homes and Gardens' in here any time soon."
Julia took the wet dish towel she was holding and threw it at Jerry, hitting him right in the face.
"Or the photographers from Interior Design."
"Jerry Jacks, you are impossible."
"Good, I am glad you realize that. Now I think I better check to see what you did with the kitchen."
Jerry walked toward Julia to go into the kitchen. As he passed Julia, he swatted her on the butt with the wet dish towel.
Julia turned around as he walked into the kitchen. "Jerry, stay out of my kitchen." She then walked into the kitchen.
Brenda tiptoed to the kitchen doorway to catch a glimpse of the scene. Jerry was opening up the cabinets. "I knew it. You women don't know how to organize these cabinets."
Julia was stunned. "What do you think you are doing?"
"Why are the glasses and dishes in these cabinets? Look how far away from the refrigerator they are now."
"So what? They are in those cabinets because the dishwasher is right there. I am not walking across the entire kitchen to put away dishes."
"Who cares about that? No one wants to have to walk across the whole room to get a glass of ice or a fill a plate from the refrigerator. I don't care about putting away dishes."
"That is a typical male remark. You just want to feed your stomach and not deal with the aftermath."
"And the problem with that would be what?"
Julia shook her head. "You are hopeless. Get out of my kitchen."
"All I am saying is that if I was living here..."
"You are not living here. My God, just the thought of that gives me nightmares."
Brenda hurried back into the living room as she saw Jerry walk toward the door. "I always knew you dreamed about me. You are a very lucky woman."
Jerry walked out of the kitchen whistling and joined Jax and Brenda in the living room. Julia took a deep breath and then walked out of the kitchen a few moments later.
Jax looked at the one remaining bookcase. "Jerry, why don't we both put this one together and finish the job?"
Brenda cleared her throat and walked over to Jax. "Honey, we need to relieve Lois." Brenda looked at Julia. "We'll be back tomorrow. Maybe Jerry can assemble the bookcase before he comes back to the house?"
Julia frowned slightly. "That isn't necessary. I am sure I can do it."
Jerry folded his arms in front of him. "Highly doubtful. You want it to remain standing, don't you? I will stay and do it."
Brenda walked to the closet and took out their coats. Jax walked over to her and whispered. "Lois said that she would keep Jillian until this evening. What is the rush to get out of here?"
"Shhh. I want them to spend some time alone together."
"Brenda, what is it with you and this matchmaking?"
Brenda ignored his question. "Julia, we will be back tomorrow and we will bring Jillian for her first visit. Let me know if you think of anything you left or if you need anything from the house."
Jerry looked up from the bookcase he was assembling. "How about some furniture? You and Jax can spare a few pieces and she definitely needs some."
Julia glared at Jerry. "Your comments are not appreciated. Go back to your manual labor."
Brenda hugged Julia. "Good-bye. Call me later."
"Good-bye Jax and Brenda. Kiss Jillian good night for me. I am going to have to talk to her about her uncle. Now there is one less person at the house to deflect his influence on her."
Jerry rolled his eyes. "Ha, ha, ha."
Jax and Brenda left and Jerry continued assembling the bookcase. Julia went into the bedroom to finish unpacking. A few minutes later she heard a curse and then a thud on the hardwood floor.
Julia hurried out of the bedroom. "What happened?"
"Nothing."
Julia looked at the blood trickling from Jerry's hand. "You're bleeding."
"It is not a big deal."
"Yes, it is. I don't want you bleeding on my floor." Julia knelt down beside him. "Come on."
Julia grabbed his non-injured hand and led him into the master bathroom. She put his hand under the water. "Leave it there." Julia then opened the medicine cabinet and poured alcohol on a cotton ball. She took his hand from under the water and rubbed the cotton ball over the large gash."
"Ouch! What are you trying to do?"
"I am trying to prevent you from getting an infection. When is the last time you had a tetanus shot?"
"I am not getting any shot so forget it."
"You did not answer my question so I guess that means not recently. We are going to the hospital. You are going to need stitches any way."
"The hell we are."
"We are going. I will get our coats and my keys and then we will leave."
"First of all, I am not going to any hospital. Secondly, you are not driving me anywhere."
"Listen up, mister, you are going and I am driving. I am not going to be responsible for you getting lockjaw even though the whole world would be thankful that you could not run your mouth. The next thing I know you will be suing me for causing your condition. You are getting a shot and that is final. As far as my driving, you can't even grip the steering wheel so you lose that argument too. Let's go."
"I hate hospitals and I hate needles."
Julia sighed. "Men are such babies. I'll tell you what, if you are really good then I will ask the doctor to give you a lollipop."
Julia walked out of the bathroom and went into the living room to get her keys. She then took their coats from the closet. "Jerry, let's go. Now!"
Jerry came out of the bedroom and Julia had to stifle her laughter. He looked like a little boy being led to the principal's office.
"I'll help you with your coat."
Jerry grimaced. "Damnit! Are you trying to kill me?"
"I'm sorry. You'll feel much better after we get to the hospital."
"Right and you have a bridge to sell me over the San Francisco Bay."
Julia laughed as she led him out the door.
The Jacks Residence -- 8:00pm
Jax and Brenda had picked up Jillian from the gate house and then had a quiet dinner at home. Jax was feeding the baby a bottle as Brenda was sitting at the piano. The grandfather clock struck the eight o'clock hour and Brenda stopped playing.
"8:00pm. I wonder where Jerry is?"
Jax laughed. "Brenda, I can't even imagine what is running through your mind right now."
"I know you think I have gone off the deep end but something has changed between them. You should have seen them support each other when you were missing. I think their vulnerability finally allowed them to see each other in a whole new light."
"Brenda, I admit that their relationship has changed for the better. I don't worry as much that one of them is going to face a murder trial one day. However that does not mean I expect them to ride off into the sunset together."
"Who is saying anything about them riding off into the sunset? I just want them to give each other a chance. If it doesn't work out, then at least they will never look back and regret what might have been."
"You can't force them to be together."
"I know that but a little help along the way will not hurt them."
Jax shook his head at Brenda and put Jillian over his shoulder as she finished her bottle. "Jillian, look out when you start seriously dating. Your mother will be setting up situations to put you together with suitors she thinks are appropriate for you."
"Ha. When Jillian starts dating, you will be the one that gives her grief. I can see you out at the front gate not allowing admittance to the property to any boy who does not pass all your qualifying tests."
"You're probably right. Maybe we should send her to a convent?"
Brenda giggled. "I don't think any convent would accept my daughter."
Jax and Brenda heard the front door open and footsteps in the hall. Jerry and Julia walked into the living room. Brenda saw the bandages wrapped around Jerry's hand and got up from the piano. "What happened to you?"
"I have been mutilated by an overzealous emergency room doctor."
Julia took a deep breath. "Don't listen to him. He is being a baby again."
"Easy for you to say. You weren't the one they jabbed and poked and prodded. All that after they made me wait two hours to even see a doctor."
Julia helped Jerry take off his coat. "Poor baby. I know it is hard to imagine how they could have taken a heart attack victim, car accident passengers and a drug overdose before you. What were they thinking?"
"Would you watch it with that coat. I know now you are trying to kill me. You are a real barrel of laughs tonight."
Jax stood up. "Jerry, you still haven't told us what happened to your hand."
"I cut it on the hinge for the bookcase and little nurse Julia over there insisted I go to get a tetanus shot."
Jax chuckled. "As she should have and I am sure you gave her quite a fuss. We all know how much you like hospitals and needles. Julia, I appreciate our efforts. I can only imagine how bad he was."
"He was worse than you could have ever imagined but I survived."
Jerry sat on the couch. "Only because she was worried that I would bleed on her precious hardwood floor or sue her for my injury."
Julia walked over to him. "No, I had to make sure you could finish the job as soon as possible. A half assembled bookcase does me no good."
"You are such a peach, Julia."
"Thanks. Now, the doctor said for you to take your medication and get to bed."
"Don't tell me what to do. You are not my mother."
Julia took the pill bottle from her pocket. "Thank heavens for small favors. Here are your pills. Go upstairs."
"Who the hell do you think you are?"
"Your worst nightmare unless you get upstairs to bed right now."
"You are deluding yourself if you think I am going to listen to you."
"Fine Jeremiah Jeb Jacks. If you won't listen to me then I will just call someone you will listen to. Let's see what time is it in Alaska now."
"You are not calling Lady Jane."
"I most certainly will."
Jerry stood up. "This whole thing is ridiculous. First I have to wait forever. Then I am prodded and jabbed and stuck. Now, to top it all off, I have to listen to the rantings of a madwoman. I am going to bed to get this day over."
Julia smirked. "Remember to brush your teeth. Do you want someone to tuck you in?"
"You are going to rue this day, Julia."
"I am shaking here. You can pick up the keys to your car when you finish assembling my bookcase. Sleep well."
Brenda was biting the inside of her mouth to keep from bursting into laughter. She finally managed to speak. "Good night Jerry. I will bring Jillian to you to say good night later."
Jax grinned. "Do you need any help getting up the steps?"
"No, I don't. You all are real funny. With friends and family like you all, who needs enemies?"
Jerry went upstairs and Julia walked over to Jax and took Jillian from his arms. "Aunt Julia gets to say good night to you again tonight. Sweet dreams sweetheart."
Jax took Jillian back. "Thank you Julia for everything."
"Don't mention it. Actually I am going to go up and check on him before I leave. Knowing Jerry he probably spit out the antibiotic." Julia left the living room to go upstairs.
Brenda took Jillian from Jax. "Well, well, well. I could not have planned this better myself."
Jax just shook his head at her. "I guess a little bloodshed goes a long way."
"You saw that scene. They are under each other's skin and in each other's thoughts. The only thing left is admitting that they have let each other in their hearts. It won't be long now."
"Okay Ms. Matchmaker, we will just have to wait and see."
Julia walked up to Jerry's room and knocked on the door. She heard no response so she simply opened the door.
Jerry turned around to face the door. "Excuse me. I don't remember telling you to come in here."
"You did not tell me not to come in here either so I made the choice. Why aren't you in bed?"
"I just got up here. You are a tyrant."
Julia noticed that Jerry was having trouble getting out of his shirt because his bandaged fingers could not manipulate the buttons. "Wait, I will do it."
Julia unbuttoned Jerry's shirt and both of them were well aware of the close proximity they were to one another. Julia's hand brushed against Jerry's chest as she reached the last button. It sent chills through both of them. Julia could not help but notice the muscles in his chest as he removed his shirt.
Julia composed herself and walked into the bathroom. She filled a glass with water and put it on the nightstand next to the bed. "Take your pill."
"Leave me alone."
"I mean it, Jerry. You have to prevent infection."
"When you go to medical school, maybe I will listen to you. Forget it, that will never happen. You could be the next Surgeon General and I would not listen to you."
"You were supposed to take these pills as soon as you got home. You have already wasted time."
"It is time for you to leave. I am going to take off my pants now and unless you want an up close and personal look, I suggest you go."
"Take the pill."
"Fine. Stay." Jerry unbuttoned his jeans and sat on the bed as he took them off. Julia looked to the other side of the room but not before catching a glimpse of his black satin boxers.
Jerry got into bed and then Julia walked over to the bed and opened the pill bottle and handed him one along with the glass. "Drink and swallow."
Jerry muttered under his breath and took a sip of the water and swallowed. "Happy?"
"No, let me look under your tongue and make sure you are not hiding the pill so you can spit it out when I leave."
"You are nuts."
"I need proof that you swallowed it."
"Does insanity run in your family? Does Jax have to worry about Brenda? Get out of here."
"Well if you didn't swallow it, the pill would have dissolved by now so I can go."
"Good riddance."
"Are you sure you don't want a bedtime story before I leave?"
"Get out."
"Men are such whiners. Good night." Julia walked out of the room.
Jerry buried his head into the pillow but was disturbed again by the sound of the door opening and Julia returning. "I am going to ask Brenda to set her alarm clock for four hours from now so you can take your next pill. She will come in and wake you and she will make sure you swallow it. Good night."
Jerry covered his face with the pillow. She was going to drive him completely insane.
Julia went back downstairs and briefed Jax and Brenda. "I just want to make sure he follows the doctor's instructions. I will see all of you tomorrow. Good night."
Julia left the house and Jax shook his head.
Brenda smiled. "One thing is for certain, it is going to get quite entertaining around here."
"That I will give you."
They went upstairs laughing as they envisioned the entertainment that Jerry and Julia would provide next.

The Jacks Residence -- 7:00am
The bright sunshine was shining through the skylights over the king size bed. Brenda stirred and then turned over to face Jax's side of the bed. With her eyes still closed, she reached out for him but only felt the satin sheets beneath her fingers. She sighed and then stirred again as a fragrant aroma greeted her senses. Her eyes slowly opened and she smiled at the sight before her eyes. There on Jax's pillow were red rose petals forming the shape of a very large heart.
Brenda sat up and slowly traced her finger around the heart design. Unbeknownst to her, Jax was standing in the doorway to the bedroom watching her. He walked into the room carrying a bouquet of red roses. "Here are the fully assembled ones. Happy Valentine's Day."
Brenda smiled so that her whole face lit up like a Christmas tree. Jax walked over to the bed and handed her the flowers. She gave him a long drugging kiss. "Happy Valentine's Day my darling."
She reached under the bed and pulled out a box wrapped in red foil. "Here is the first of your gifts for the day."
Jax sat on the bed next to her. He opened the box and found three pairs of silk boxers with red heart designs. "Thank you sweetie. I see we both managed to keep with our heart theme."
"Of course, it is Valentine's Day. That was your morning gift. You will just have to wait to see what is in store for you with the mid-day and evening gift."
Jax laughed. "I don't have any trouble waiting. You are the curious and impatient one here."
"I can wait for my other two gifts. No problem." Brenda inched closer to him and started running her fingers across his jawline. "However, there are some things that I can't wait for."
Jax sexily raised his eyebrow. "What would that be?"
"Being the responsible gift giver that I am, I have to ensure that the boxers are a perfect fit for you."
"I see. We have a slight problem since I am already wearing a pair of boxers now."
Brenda smiled at him. "Obviously then I will just have to assist you in removing them."
Brenda untied the belt of Jax's terrycloth robe and pushed it from his shoulders. She the eased him down onto the bed as she knelt over him. She began dropping baby kisses all the way down his chest. When Brenda reached the elastic waistband of his boxers, she lifted her head and slyly grinned at Jax. She then clasped the elastic waistband between her teeth and slowly began to slide the boxers down Jax's body. Her hands were following the same path as her teeth.
Jax was breathless. "Brenda..... You're killing me."
Brenda reached his feet and the boxers fell from his toes. Brenda sat up and grinned as she saw the evidence of her torture. "No, I don't think the boxers are going to fit while you are in this condition. I guess I we will just have to do something about that."
Jax could take no more of her torturous seduction. He sat up and grabbed her. In one swift move, she was on her back and he moved on top of her. She was shrieking with laughter. "Now who is the one who can't wait?"
"Guilty as charged." Jax's lips overtook hers and she was swept away instantaneously. His hands slid the satin material of her nightgown up her skin as his tongue traced around her left ear. Brenda whimpered as she wrapped her legs around him and Jax eased the gown over her head. Their lips met again as their bodies became one. The love they shared was revealed in their passionate movements and heard in their tender words. This gift of love was given to each by the other.
The Jacks Residence -- 12:30pm
Jax was carrying the suitcase down the steps when the doorbell rang.
"Julia, you still have a key remember?"
"Only for emergencies. I am not going to barge into your home when I am no longer living here."
"I hardly call it barging into our home especially since you will be spending tonight here doing us a tremendous favor. Are you sure you are up to this?"
"We will be fine. It will give me a great chance to spend time with Jillian. How is Brenda?"
"A little apprehensive. She has never been away from the baby this long. I think right now twenty-four hours seems like an eternity."
"You two deserve some quality private time together especially after the hell you both went through two weeks ago. I will take good care of Jillian."
"I know you will and so does Brenda."
Brenda appeared at the top of the stairs holding Jillian. "Look who's here, precious. Aunt Julia is here to take care of you."
Brenda reached the bottom of the stairs and handed Jillian to Julia. "Hey sweetheart. We are going to have so much fun together. Too bad your Uncle Jerry has to be here as well but we will just ignore him."
"I heard that." Jerry came from the kitchen. "Don't be making disparaging remarks about me to my niece."
"The truth hurts, Jerry. Live with it."
"Okay, you two, time out. You have the next twenty-four hours together so you may want to spread out your bantering."
Jerry laughed. "Julia is such an easy mark, there is no need to spread it out. She gives me so much material, I can banter for the entire time period."
Julia looked at Jerry. "Yes, that is the great thing about this country, you are free to make a fool of yourself."
Brenda shook her head. "Jose has made lunch. Why don't you two go into the dining room and eat. Julia, the swing is in there already so you can put Jillian in it. We will be in shortly."
Jerry and Julia walked into the dining room and Jax put his arms around Brenda. "She is going to be fine. I know how much you are going to miss her, I will too."
Brenda hugged Jax. "I know but she is four and a half months old and I have never been away from her for more than twelve hours even when we went to New Orleans. I really do know she will be fine. It is me that I am not so sure about."
"Do you want to stay home? There is nothing to say that we have to go to Manhattan. I can cancel the suite at The Plaza Hotel."
Brenda ran her fingers along his jawline. "I want to go, I really do. A year ago tonight we were at St. Vincent's renewing our vows. We were also celebrating the news that Jillian was on her way. That was one of the best days of my life and I want to celebrate it with you. I love you. I will be fine."
"If you are sure."
"I am positive." Brenda stroked his cheek. "Well, it is mid-day so I guess it is time for your next present." Brenda walked into the living room and opened the desk drawer and pulled out a box wrapped with a red and white heart design. "Happy Valentine's Day again."
Jax opened the box and found a large heart shaped paperweight made from solid onyx. On the bottom inlaid in 24 karat gold were the words, "To my one and only Valentine. Love Always, Brenda."
"It is beautiful. Thank you my love."
Jax made no further comment nor made any movement. Brenda folded her arms together. "Well?"
Jax tried to contain his smile. "Well what?"
Brenda glared at him. "Where is my present?"
"Oh, you want it now?"
"Ha, ha, ha. Yes, I want it now. Go get it."
"It's been here all the time. All you had to do was open up the front door."
Brenda opened up the front door and stood there in amazement. She was stammering as she tried to speak. "Jax,.. I ... don't ... believe ... this. There ... are ... there ... are ..."
Jax was overjoyed at her astonishment. "Swans, Brenda. There are swans in the fountain." It was perfect as the birds were facing one another in the fountain so that their bodies each made the perfect half of a heart.
"You bought me a pair of swans."
"Yes."
"It's so romantic and they are so beautiful. Do you know how much I love swans? My governess used to tell me fairytales about them."
"I know. I have heard you tell Jillian some of them already."
Brenda threw her arms around Jax. "I love them and I love you." She looked out the front door again at them but then turned quickly to Jax. "It's the winter. Isn't it too cold for them?"
"A heater was installed in the fountain last week so they are okay for now. Later on today, they will be moved to the lily pond in the greenhouse where they will spend the next few weeks until spring arrives."
Brenda hugged Jax again. "Thank you Jax."
Jax kissed the top of her head. "You are welcome sweetie. Happy Valentine's Day."
The Jacks Residence -- 7:30pm
Jax and Brenda had left several hours ago for the trip into New York City. Brenda must have told Julia and Jerry fifteen times what Jillian's schedule was. Jerry kept reminding Brenda that they actually knew what Jillian's schedule was. Brenda puts notes with Simone's emergency number in every room of the house. Jax finally had to just about drag Brenda from the house after she had kissed Jillian good-bye for the seventh time.
Jerry was talking to Jillian as she sat in the swing in the den. "Hey Roo, let's see how high this can go."
Jerry pushed the swing and Jillian cooed as she moved back and forth in the air. "That's much better, isn't it, Roo? We Jackses like adventure."
Julia walked into the den. "What are you doing to that poor child?"
"Showing her a good time."
"She just ate. You are going to make her sick."
"She is not going to be sick. She loves it."
"Jerry, she is going to get sick. You are cleaning her up when she does."
Jerry bent down to Jillian. "Your Aunt Julia is such a stick in the mud. Thankfully you have me here to spice up things."
Julia rolled her eyes. "Jillian, thankfully you will have me here when he gets himself into trouble. Trust me, he is a very bad influence."
"You wouldn't know a good time if it hit you smack in the face."
"Just because I am not brash, reckless and wild like some people in this room does not mean I don't know how to have a good time."
Jerry tried to look innocent. "Do you really think Jillian is brash, reckless and wild? That's quite a compliment for a four and a half month old."
"Very funny."
Jerry grinned. "I thought so."
Julia began tapping her foot. "Just because I demonstrate a sense of decorum does not mean that I do not know how to have a good time. There is nothing wrong with being cultured, refined and urbane."
Jerry sat down on the couch. "Oh, that's what you call it. I just thought you were boring and dull."
"Why do I even bother trying to talk to you? It is like speaking to a scarecrow. Maybe you can ask for a trip to Oz for Christmas so you can get a brain."
Before Jerry could volley back a retort, Jillian laughed out loud. Julia broke into hysterics. "See, even your niece agrees."
"Roo, I am wounded. How could you take her side? Don't you know that she is the wicked witch?"
"Stop that!"
Jerry patted Julia on the shoulder. "The truth hurts, doesn't it?"
Julia threw up her hands. "I am not even talking to you anymore. There is no need to waste my breath."
"Thank heavens for small miracles." The phone then rang. "Good Lord, it has to be Brenda again. She must think we are both complete incompetents."
"Speak for yourself." Julia picked up the phone. "Hello. Thao, what a surprise. I am glad you tracked me down." Jerry rolled his eyes. "Happy Valentine's Day to you too. Where are you?" Jerry shook his head. "No, I haven't gotten on the slopes yet this season. Jax and Brenda are trying to organize a trip to Cortina later this month to use the chalet Brenda won from you last year."
Julia looked at Jerry and then asked Thao to hold on. She put the phone on hold and spoke to Jerry. "I am taking this upstairs so you are in charge. When I get back, I will give her a bath."
"I am perfectly capable of taking care of her. Just go talk to the playboy."
Julia went upstairs and Jerry walked over to Jillian. "Roo, I hate that guy. I don't know what all these women see in him. Sure he is handsome, charming and has money but besides that, what else?"
Jillian stared back at Jerry. Jerry lifted the baby out of the swing. "We don't need to wait for Aunt Julia to have a bath. Let's go upstairs and get your things and we will take care of it ourselves."
Jerry went upstairs to the nursery and picked up the bathing paraphernalia and sleepwear that Brenda had left out for them to use this evening. He went into the master bathroom, grabbed an extra towel and filled the plastic tub with water.
"Roo, wait until you get older and I can show you how to kayak and ride a jet ski. Your father thinks he is so gifted but don't let him fool you. He is a mere mortal when compared to me. And don't let him to try to convince you how much better he is than I am just because he was a lifeguard for a couple summers. He only used it as a pretense to pick up girls. I didn't need any guise to do that."
Jillian continued to stare at him and then began thrashing in the water. "Hey, hey there. That is not part of the plan. This is your bath not mine."
Julia finished up her phone call with Thao and went downstairs. Jerry and Jillian were nowhere to be found. She went back up the steps and checked the nursery and then went into the master suite and heard them in the bathroom.
"Oh dear God, you are going to drown the poor child."
Jerry rolled his eyes at Julia. "Keep your pantyhose on, woman. I am capable of keeping this little sheila from drowning."
"Let me check that water. You are probably scalding her."
"I am not an idiot. Why do you think the floating temperature gauge is here? Brenda only said it ten times and look, she taped a note to the damn mirror. The woman really had a lot of faith in our abilities."
"I told you that I would give her a bath when I finished speaking to Thao."
"Knowing that blowhard, I figured you might be on the phone half of the night."
Jerry dumped some baby shampoo into his hand and started rubbing it on Jillian's head.
"Jerry, you have used enough shampoo for five baths. She does not have that much hair for heaven's sake."
"So what. She will extra clean hair then."
"You have an answer for everything."
Jillian started splashing the water again sending a spray in the direction of both Julia and Jerry. Julia laughed at her. "That is enough of that. You are just being a troublemaker."
Jerry finished rinsing Jillian's hair and got the baby ready to remove from the tub. "Make your self useful and hand me the towel."
"You need to get a diaper on her."
"Would you just give me the towel? She is beginning to look like a prune."
"Yes, sire. Do you want me to feed you grapes as well?"
"Maybe later." Jerry picked up the baby and began to wrap her in a towel. Before he had finished, he lifted the baby to his chest and suddenly felt a warm trickle run down his shirt.
Julia looked at him and the baby and burst out laughing. She could not even stand up straight and leaned against the bathroom door for support. "We can see how much your niece thinks about you now that you have been christened. I can't wait until Jax and Brenda hear this. What I wouldn't do for a video camera."
Jerry looked at Jillian and then at Julia. "I see how funny you both think this is. Ganging up on me again. Today is just one of those days."
"I guess when it rains, it pours." Julia was hysterical again.
Jerry shook his head and handed the baby to Julia. "Here. It seems as though I have to change. Believe me Jillian, your parents are getting this dry cleaning bill."
Julia hugged Jillian as Jerry left the bathroom. "What a good girl. Uncle Jerry needs to be knocked down a peg or two. We are going to make quite a team."
The Rainbow Room -- 8:30pm
Jax and Brenda had spent the late afternoon walking up and down Fifth Avenue. They had taken a early evening carriage ride and then returned to The Plaza Hotel to dress for dinner at The Rainbow Room. Brenda had called Julia to check on Jillian again before leaving for the restaurant. Julia was laughing so hard, it had taken her five minutes to relay the bathtub story to Brenda. Brenda had to put Jax on the phone after hearing the story because she was laughing too hard to speak with Julia. Brenda heard Jerry in the background telling them all that they were going to pay for this.
Jax and Brenda had been seated at a corner table by the window at the restaurant. They hadn't taken their eyes off one another since they had arrived. The champagne was delivered and Jax proposed a toast to them. "To my love, the owner of my heart and soul. May our love and commitment grow stronger every day and be our safe harbor in any storm."
A tear slipped from the corner of Brenda's eye and Jax gently wiped it away with his thumb. "Jax, sometimes I still don't believe you are real. I love you so. I love our life. I love our daughter. I love the person I am when I am with you. You are my love and inspiration."
Jax covered her hand with his and Brenda interlocked her fingers through his. Brenda gazed at him and Jax felt his heart doing somersaults. He grinned at the effect she had on him.
"What are grinning about, Mr. Jacks?"
"The effect you still have on me even after all this time. Do you realize that it was two years ago tonight that you came into my suite to return that emerald ring? I don't think my heart will ever get used to the power you have over me."
Brenda smiled. "Good, I am glad I am not the only one in this relationship who has lost total control of their heart."
After they ordered, Jax noticed Brenda looking around the restaurant. "What is it?"
"I was just thinking about us here last year celebrating the news about Jillian. In some ways it seems like only yesterday but in other ways it was a lifetime ago."
"I feel the same way. Jillian has added so much to our lives, more than I ever imagined was possible. I love you more than I did a year ago. I love you more than I did yesterday and tomorrow I will love you more than today."
Brenda lifted her hand to Jax's cheek. "I wish time could just stand still for moments like these."
Jax turned his face into the palm of her hand. "They do in our hearts." He then reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a box. "To add to this moment, here is your evening gift. Happy Valentine's Day."
Brenda opened the box and took a deep breath. She removed the beautiful gold heart-shaped locket. There was a ruby in the center of the locket. She opened the locket and found a picture of Jax and a picture of Jillian. "Oh, Jax, it is gorgeous. I am going to wear it always so I can keep it close to my heart. Would you help me put it on now?"
Jax got up from his chair and fastened the locket around her neck and then kissed her cheek. He sat back down and Brenda looked at her watch.
"I had to be a little creative with your last Valentine's Day gift. I mean what else can you buy or give the man who has everything especially when we are sticking to a heart theme? I decided simply to let you and as much of the world as possible know how much I love you."
Jax laughed. "What did you do, send a message over the wire service?"
"No, that wouldn't have been very romantic. I mean we are here in New York surrounded by millions of people. There are spectacles all around us. I mean just look at the view we see from here. Here we are with a full view of the Empire State Building. It's decorated for Valentine's Day just like in the movie, 'Sleepless in Seattle,' with red lights forming a red heart along the top of one entire side of the building. Just think of how much of the city can see it."
Jax was grinning and shaking his head at her. He had no idea what she was talking about but she was so adorable. "Yes, it's quite sight."
Brenda glanced at her watch again. "You really think so. I have always loved the lights of the building."
"Yes, I do." Jax glanced out the window toward the building again. "It is ... " Jax lost his train of thought as he looked out the window at the building. The huge solid red heart had now been replaced with a red heart containing a message designed in white lights. My darling Jax, I am yours forever. Love Brenda."
Brenda smiled at the look of surprise on his face. "I figured at least you and tens of thousands residents and visitors to New York would know. Happy Valentine's Day darling."
Jax brought Brenda's hand to his lips. "You amaze me every day. I love you, Mrs. Jacks."
The Jacks Residence -- 10:00pm
Julia was rocking Jillian in the nursery. The baby was drifting off to sleep so Julia walked over to the cradle and gently put her to bed. Julia turned Veronica's music box on and watched Jillian settle into a more comfortable position. Julia stood over the cradle and watched her.
Jerry had appeared at the entrance of the door while Julia was rocking the baby. He then watched Julia watching Jillian. He did not like the feeling in the pit of his stomach. Jerry did not know what was happening to him. Any other Valentine's Day, he would have been with a beautiful woman drinking champagne and having a night of fun. Tonight he was giving a four and a half month old a bath and being used as a diaper. Jerry sighed when he realized that he actually had a more enjoyable Valentine's Day than usual. The sense of loneliness that had usually controlled him was not there tonight. Instead the feeling had been replaced with some type of burning need. Jerry gazed into the nursery again and realized that the beautiful woman he was spending this Valentine's Day with was causing his inner turmoil. It was because of her and Jerry hated it.
When Jerry had first come to Port Charles, he thought it would be a mere pit stop. It was a nothing town. No real excitement, no real energy, no real zest. He had been surprised that Jax had settled there and figured that Jax was only tolerating it for Brenda. The town grew on Jerry as did the people. Living with Jax and Brenda and the baby over the past few months had made Jerry realize some things. Jerry had realized that it was the first time in his life that he actually felt lonely. He was surrounded by family and friends and yet he was still lonely. He was lonely for what his parents had and for what Jax and Brenda had. It shocked him and he tried to deny his feelings but it was a losing battle.
Tonight some of his loneliness had been erased. For the first time, Jerry felt he knew what he wanted. He wanted someone who just belonged to him. He wanted a family. He wanted Julia. The problem was that he had no idea what to do about it. Jerry had never lost anything in his life that was of any significance. He was fearless. Tonight he was petrified. The woman who drove him completely crazy at times had somehow stolen his heart and she did not even know it. More problematic was the fact that Jerry had no idea how Julia felt about him. He was not about to make a complete fool of himself if she was just going to laugh at his feelings. There was no way he would ever let that happen. Jerry sighed and walked back downstairs. Life had a bad tendency of throwing curve balls when you least expected it.
Julia continued to look down at the baby before she turned off Veronica's music box. Jillian was fast asleep and Julia smiled as the moon reflected through the windows framing the baby's face. She was so beautiful and such a gift. Julia had never thought she was the maternal type but Jillian had caused her to re-evaluate that line of thinking. Jillian created joy wherever she was. Jax and Brenda seemed so complete and so happy and so in love. They were the perfect family and Julia envied them all.
Julia tiptoed out of Jillian's room and walked downstairs. She heard the television in the den and walked into the room. Jerry was sleeping on the sofa. Julia watched him sleep and realized how much he looked like an innocent little boy. She then thought back to earlier this evening when she had walked in on him bathing Jillian. He certainly did love Jillian and she loved him back. Julia now realized that Jillian had reached a part of him that he let very few people ever see.
Jerry was so infuriating most of the time but then there were times when he allowed his soul to be seen -- times like this evening with Jillian and the times when his family was in a crisis. Julia saw the real Jerry when Jax was missing. He was trying to be strong for Brenda and his parents and for Jax but there were times when his vulnerability showed. It was times like those when Julia felt like a teenager around him. He threw her so off balance that she did not what was up or what was down. She hated the feeling but she cringed at the idea of never feeling that way again.
Over the past week when Julia had been alone at the loft, she had spent a great deal of time deciding what she wanted from her life. She wanted someone to laugh and cry with, someone to yell at and rejoice with, someone to love. Her contemplation also provided her with another realization. She wanted Jeremiah Jeb Jacks and it was driving her insane. Julia could not read Jerry at all concerning his feelings. She did not know who or what he was interested in or if he even knew the answer to that himself. Julia knew that she did not want to risk being hurt and humiliated for nothing. If Jerry was not interested in her then she could not afford to develop any stronger feelings for him. She was not going to jump into the pool until she knew that there was at least some amount of water in it.
Julia took a deep breath as she gazed down upon him. She was going to have to decide what to do about this. A part of her knew that even contemplating a relationship with Jerry could lead to the biggest heartache she had ever experienced. She did not know if she could ever take such a risk. Julia walked over to the rocking chair and picked up the afghan draped over the back of the chair. She walked to the couch and covered Jerry with the blanket. She turned the television off and switched off the lamp next to the sofa. Julia took a final glance at him before heading upstairs. Life was getting more complicated by the minute.
The Plaza Hotel -- 11:30pm
Jax and Brenda had returned from dinner and their limo drive to the Empire State Building. They had gone to the higher observation tower to look at the lights of the city and stand beneath the stars. Jax had wrapped his arms so tightly around Brenda that she did not feel the February night air.
They arrived back at the suite and lit a few candles around the room. They sipped champagne and Brenda turned the stereo on.
Jax held his hand out to her. "Dance with me."
Brenda slid into his arms. Jax took a deep breath as he pulled her closer and rested his chin on the top of her head. She seemed to melt into him. They were such a perfect fit together. The music of a perfect song for the evening was then heard from the stereo.
If there were no words,
No way to speak,
I would still hear you.
If there were no tears,
No way to feel inside,
I'd still feel for you.
And even if the sun refused to shine,
Even if romance ran out of rhyme,
You would still have my heart until the end of time.
You're all I need, my love, my valentine.
Jax and Brenda continued to float as they danced to the music. Their feet never felt as if they touched the ground as their love surrounded them. Brenda caressed his cheek as Jax pressed his lips to her forehead. Jax then tilted her face to him and left feather kisses on her eyelids, her cheeks, her nose and her chin. The kisses were as soft as the finest velvet and felt like sunbeams reaching Brenda's heart.
All of my life,
I have been waiting for
All you give to me.
You've opened my eyes
And shown me how to love unselfishly
I've dreamed of this a thousand times before,
In my dreams, I couldn't love you more.
I will give you my heart
Until the end of time.
You're all I need, my love, my valentine.
Their eyes met again and the love and passion gleaming in their eyes was evident. Brenda ran her fingers through the back of Jax's hair as he pulled her closer to him. The heat generated from them was strong enough to warm the chilly February night. Their lips then met in a soft, gentle kiss.
And even if the sun refused to shine,
Even if romance ran out of rhyme,
You would still have my heart until the end of time.
You're all I need, my love, my valentine.
Jax gazed into her eyes. "You are my love always."
Brenda tightened her arms around his neck. "You are my valentine forever."
Jax lifted her into his arms and carried her to the bedroom where they shared their love. Their union was tender and gentle yet filled with passion. It was intoxicating and exhilarating and a complete merger of their hearts and souls. They had again created a masterpiece of love and devotion which others could only strive for. It was magic.

The Plaza Hotel -- 8:00am
Jax was gazing down at Brenda as she slept. She was beautiful and the smile that was on her face when she had fallen asleep hours before still remained. She looked as though she was completely at peace. The crisp cotton sheets were wrapped around her and the locket hung from her neck. Brenda was truly a vision and she was truly his. Jax wanted to touch the silkiness of her skin but he resisted the temptation.
Brenda shifted among the pillows and her eyelids began to flutter. She slowly opened her eyes and softly moaned as she saw Jax looking down upon her. A beautiful smiled radiated from her face as she spoke to Jax. "Hey. How long have you been sitting there watching me?"
"Not long. It has only been the last couple hours."
Brenda edged her body closer to him. "Jax, you are mad."
Jax ran his index finger from the middle of her forehead to her lips. "Madly in love, yes."
Brenda raised her head and met his lips for a lingering kiss. "Thank you."
Jax gave her a curious smile. "For what?"
"For yesterday and last night. For this moment, for everything. I am so glad we came and had this time together. I know that Jillian is fine and that Julia and Jerry are taking wonderful care of her. I am sorry I got a little crazy before we left Port Charles."
Jax laughed and took her in his arms. "Don't you ever apologize for being concerned about our daughter. Don't you know how much that means to me?"
"Yes, I know. I love you for it."
"I love you more." Jax kissed her forehead. What do you want to do today before we head home?"
Brenda grinned at Jax. "How about spending the whole morning in bed? You can show me how much you love me."
Jax sighed and shook his head. "The sacrifices I have to make being your husband."
Brenda ran her hand down his arm. "I know how much you hate to touch me."
"Well, I guess someone has to do it."
Brenda slowly sat up so that the sheets fell from her body. She slyly grinned as she pushed the hair from her face. She sensually ran her tongue along her lips and smiled as she saw the desire building in his eyes. "Jasper, I am waiting."
Brenda giggled as Jax lunged for her. "You are going to be punished for that, Mrs. Jacks."
"Oh, Jasper, you and your empty promises."
"That's it. You are now my prisoner."
Brenda was shrieking with laughter as Jax pushed her down onto the bed and into the pillows. "I guess I will have to be your love slave then."
"Yes, you will, Mrs. Jacks, and it is a lifetime sentence without the possibility of parole."
Brenda gazed into his eyes. "Poor me."
Jax lifted her chin and covered her lips with his. "Poor you indeed." Brenda buried her hands in his golden locks as her punishment began.
The Jacks Residence -- 4:00pm
Julia had gone upstairs to pack and make sure the nursery was straight before Jax and Brenda returned home. Jerry was in the den with Jillian. He had decided the baby was bored so he was entertaining her. Julia heard Jillian and Jerry's laughter as she descended the stairs. She walked into the den and stopped dead in her tracks at the scene before her.
"What have you done to this place and what are you doing to her?"
Jerry glanced at Julia and then continued with his activity. "Mother Superior is here."
"Jerry Jacks, what the hell are you doing?"
"We are taking a train ride and I am the conductor."
Julia looked at the large magazine rack in which the infant seat sat. The magazine rack was on wheels and Jerry was using it as the train in which Jillian rode. The cushions from the chairs and the sofa were positioned all over the floor to form tunnels. The path for the train track encircled the entire den and the hearth served as the train depot. Jerry was pushing the "train" all around the room as Jillian was having a ball.
"You have completely lost your mind. Look at this mess."
Jerry leaned down toward the baby. "Jillian, I told you she was a stick in the mud."
Julia shook her head. "Jax and Brenda are on their way and this place looks like a cyclone hit it. Do you know how expensive those sofa cushions are? You have thrown them on the floor like they are garbage bags. You are wheeling their daughter around in a piece of furniture on this race course."
"It's a train track, weren't you listening? Didn't you hear the ding ding for the railroad crossing and the toot toot for the train whistle. Julia, you really need to pay more attention when you are babysitting."
"Stop living in that little deluded mind of yours and get this place back together."
Jillian started fussing. "See, now you upset her because you are blocking the tracks. Ding ding. Toot toot. Train is coming. Roo, here we go."
Jerry started quickly pushing the train around the sofa and Jillian started laughing again. Julia put her head in her hands. She felt as if she was visiting an insane asylum. "Jerry, that is enough."
Unbeknownst to either Jerry or Julia, Brenda and Jax had just entered the house. They walked into the foyer and heard Jillian and Jerry in the den. Brenda threw off her coat and hurried down the hallway to see the baby. Julia looked up and saw Brenda walk into the room. Jax followed behind her.
"Where is Mommy's little girl?" Brenda walked around the sofa cushions and lifted Jillian from the infant seat. "Mommy missed you so much but I know Aunt Julia and Uncle Jerry took good care of you." Brenda looked around the room. "I see they also decided to give the housekeeping staff some time off."
Jax surveyed the room. "Jerry, did you have your friends over to play? I see that Locomotive Jacks is back in operation."
"Yes, and Jillian loved it just like a true Jacks."
Julia shook her head. "Brenda, I am sorry about this mess." Julia looked toward Jerry. "Some people live in a fantasy world."
Jerry spoke up. "Others live a boring and uninspired existence."
Jax walked over to Jillian and took her in his arms and kissed her. "So you survived your first excursion on Locomotive Jacks? Wait until you try Submarine Jacks."
Brenda shook her head and smiled. "Something tells me that I do not want to know about this."
Jerry chuckled. "Wise woman."
Julia sighed. "My poor niece, corrupted already."
Jerry raised his eyebrow at Julia. "Try it, you may like it."
Brenda and Jax suppressed their laughter as Julia rolled her eyes at Jerry and then walked out of the room.
Jerry shrugged his shoulders. "What did I say?" He then also left the den.
Jax picked up the chair cushions. "Well, they all survived and don't seem any worse for the wear."
Brenda began picking up the sofa cushions from the floor. "I agree. Now it is time to determine how big a risk taker each of them is."
Jax sat down on the couch with the baby. "Then what?"
Brenda sat next to him and propped her feet on the coffee table. "Sit back and watch the fun."
"Or the train wreck, whichever the case may be."
Brenda swatted Jax with a pillow from the sofa and then leaned against his shoulder. She placed her hands over his as he held Jillian. They sat back and enjoyed the love, happiness and togetherness of their little family. It was a perfect moment for all.

The Jacks Residence -- 10:00am
Jax was still breathing heavily as Brenda traced lazy circles on his chest. She dropped a few light kisses over his heart and smiled at the feel of his rapidly beating heart.
Brenda raised her head from his chest and seductively grinned at Jax. "Are you going to be all right? I trust this morning was not too intense for my Iron Man."
Jax traced her cheek bone with his thumb. "No, but some days I wonder if you are trying to kill me."
Brenda giggled and rested her chin on his chest. "That would defeat the purpose but there may be a time when I need to give you mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. I am certain you can handle me but we will just have to continue putting my theory to the test."
Jax brushed the stray curl from her face. "I am in total agreement. Even if it kills me."
She snuggled back into his arms and smiled. It amazed her that after almost two years together, they were still learning new ways to satisfy one another. Their lovemaking had continued to intensify just as their love for each other had. As fulfilling as it was on a physical level, it was even more rewarding on an emotional level. Brenda never thought it would be possible to feel as close to someone as she did to Jax.
Brenda remembered how Jax had said during their first visit to New Orleans that they "fit so perfectly in bed together." It could not have been more true. It was if they were two interlocking pieces to a jigsaw puzzle. Their bodies seemed to react and move in perfect harmony thus their lovemaking was always a pure testimony to their love. No one or no thing had ever given either of them such satisfaction and they both knew that nothing every would. It was perfect.
Sunday mornings gave them the opportunity to spend time together. Jillian was still faithfully taking long morning naps so Jax and Brenda had the chance to have some time just for the two of them. These mornings were spent in bed and were filled with laughter and romance. Sunday morning was always the highlight for the week for Jax and Brenda. They reveled in their love and happiness.
Jax ran his hand slowly down Brenda's chest and he grinned as felt her body respond to his touch. He pulled her on top of him, pushing away the sheet covering her chest. Brenda moaned in delight as Jax's lips traced a path down her skin.
Brenda felt the intensity of Jax's desire for her. She then sat up and saw the fire in his eyes. She softly giggled and gave him a devilish grin. "Mr. Jacks, are you up for this?"
Jax gave her a sly wink as he saw to it that she found the answer to her inquiry. Brenda grinned. "I just wanted to make sure."
Jax shook his head at her. "What has gotten into you this morning?"
Brenda shot him a seductive smile. "You mean besides you?"
"Mrs. Jacks, you are so bad."
Brenda laughed. "You like me that way."
Jax started laughing. "No, I love you that way." He then pulled her into an intoxicating kiss. It took everything he had to maintain some control as Brenda's hands explored him . She was killing him and she knew exactly what she was doing to him.
Jax was overcome with dizziness at the pleasure she was giving him. He did not know how he was still breathing. "Baby, please. You are going to kill me."
Brenda was fighting her own control now. She wanted him as much as wanted her. She eased her body on top of him as the blankets fell to the floor. As if choreographed to a symphony, they lovingly shared their hearts and souls as their bodies merged. With slow and sensuous touches, their bodies showcased the love their hearts possessed. They both were moaning from the pleasure and Brenda gasped as both of them lost all control. It was like the Fourth of July as fireworks were going off in their minds. It was a perfect display in celebration of their love.
Brenda was now dozing in Jax's arms with a smile on her face. Jax softly kissed her forehead and Brenda stirred. Jax's heart skipped a beat as she opened her eyes and he saw the love shining through them. Brenda stroked his cheek and then moved her finger to his lips. Jax took her hand in his as he gently sucked and then kissed each finger.
"It doesn't get any better than this, Mrs. Jacks. You are incredible."
Brenda was beaming. "Only with you. Love makes everything perfect."
"That is what happens when people are made for each other. We were put on this earth to be together and to love each other."
"I finally believe that. Do you know what the best part of our lovemaking is for me?"
Jax shook his head and his eyes sparkled at the sight of her. "Tell me."
"The last thing you always do after we have made love is kiss me and tell me how much you love me. That means more to me than anything. I love you so much."
Jax smiled. "Good. It means the most to me as well. I love you Mrs. Jacks."
Jax lifted her chin and brought her lips to his. It was a tender, gentle kiss but it told them both everything. Love was their answer and always would be.
The Jacks Residence -- 2:00pm
Jax was at the club playing racquetball with Justus this afternoon. Julia had come over for lunch before her trip to London this evening. She had some Barrett Industries business to attend to early in the week and then she was going to travel to Italy to meet Jax and Brenda at the chalet in Cortina. They had finally made plans to visit Brenda's favorite ski resort and spend time at the chalet that Brenda had won from Thao the year before.
Julia had brought over her ski equipment so that Jax and Brenda could take it with them on the jet when they left for Cortina on Wednesday evening. This way Julia did not have to transport the equipment to London with her. Julia was meeting Jax and Brenda at the chalet on Friday. Jerry was not joining them, much to Brenda's chagrin. He claimed to have too much work to do but Brenda had her doubts. She had vowed to herself that she would somehow convince him to join them.
Julia was playing with Jillian in the den while Brenda was in the office talking on the phone to Simone about some fundraising ideas for Kanga's Kradle. Jerry came in the front door and walked into the den.
Jerry looked at Julia sitting on the couch dangling a set of keys in front of Jillian. "Hello."
Julia looked up. "Hello."
Jerry walked toward the couch making faces at the baby. Jillian laughed and swatted at the keys in front of her. "I know, Jillian, it is not as much fun as Locomotive Jacks. We will just have to teach Aunt Julia a few things."
Julia rolled her eyes. "Thanks but no thanks."
Jerry cocked his head. "You don't know what you are missing."
"I think I do and I am not missing anything. I also don't think that Jillian needs to be taught anything that could land her either in the hospital or jail one day."
Jerry chuckled. "You really have to learn how to live, Ms. Barrett. Have you ever heard the expression, lighten up?"
"Have you ever heard the expression, grow up?"
Jerry shrugged his shoulders. "Of course, I have just chosen to ignore it."
"That is quite obvious. The little boy who refuses to grow up. Maybe we should start calling you Peter Pan." Julia then started laughing.
"What's so funny?"
Julia tried to compose herself. "I was just trying to picture you in green tights. It was quite a sight."
Brenda walked toward the den and heard Julia's laughter. Brenda waited outside the door once she realized Jerry was in the room with Julia.
Jerry rolled his eyes. "Trust me, Julia, I would have to be dead before you would ever have the opportunity to see me in green tights, in tights of any color actually."
Julia was still laughing. "Why? Let me see your legs. I bet tights would look terrific on you. Then you could wear that cute little green outfit and those adorable little shoes and hat Peter Pan wore. It would be perfect."
Jerry shook his head at Julia and walked toward her. "You think that you are really funny, don't you?"
"Watch out!"
Jerry jumped when she Julia spoke. "For what?"
"You are going to step on Tinkerbell."
Jerry threw his hands into the air. "You are certifiable. Poor Jillian has a nut for an aunt."
"At least she doesn't have to worry about Captain Hook when she is with me. Now when she is with her Uncle Peter Pan, I am not so sure."
Jerry clapped his hands in mocking applause. "Your so-called humor will go over much better with those stuffed shirts in London. When are you leaving so I know when the people on this side of the Atlantic will be safe again?"
Julia finally stopped laughing. "You know I leave this evening."
"Thank God. Peace in Port Charles again."
"Impossible. Remember the alligator with the ticking clock which follows Captain Hook around. No peace here Peter Pan."
Julia started laughing again as Jerry turned toward the door. "I am leaving you and your warped sense of humor. Jillian, I pity you but she will be gone soon."
Julia waved Jillian's arm to say good-bye to Jerry. "Good-bye. Remember to take Tinkerbell with you."
Brenda dashed down the hall into the living room as Jerry left the den shaking his head. He reached the stairs and he could not stop the smile from appearing on his face. Julia had actually had gotten the better of him. Next time would be different. As he ascended the stairs, Brenda walked into the hallway again more determined than ever to figure a way to get Jerry to Cortina. She was convinced that Cortina would signal the start of something wonderful for Jerry and Julia.
The Jacks Residence -- 9:00pm
Jax was in the office on the phone with Australia about some business for J & J Jacks. Jerry walked into the den and found Brenda reading on the couch. She looked up from her magazines and pamphlets. "Did Jillian go down okay?"
Jerry sat down on the chair next to the sofa. "Yes, she was out like a light. I don't think she appreciates my kangaroo stories yet."
Brenda laughed. "Give her some time. Thanks for putting her to bed. I am almost through all these materials for Tuesday's board meeting."
Jerry smiled at her. "You really are enjoying this, aren't you?"
Brenda was beaming at him. "Yes, every single minute of it. I still can't believe I am doing this."
"Well, you are and you are handling it admirably. We are all very proud of you especially that love-crazed brother of mine. I really don't know about him anymore. Sometimes I think he is going to burst because of the way he feels about you."
Brenda giggled. "Jax always lets me know exactly how he is feeling. I love that about him."
"The same can be said about you, Brenda. Between the two of you, I do not know who is worse. Some days I feel like I am in the middle of a romance novel when I am with the two of you."
"You know a little romance would not hurt you."
"That's Jax's department not mine. He is the one who expresses his feelings and risks....." Jerry stopped in mid-sentence but Brenda knew what he was thinking.
Brenda took a deep breath and decided to push the issue. She had held her silence too long. "Risks getting hurt?"
"Brenda, I really don't want to talk about this. I don't wear my emotions on my sleeve the way you do. We are completely different in that regard."
"Yes, we are. Believe me there were times when I wish I didn't wear my emotions on my sleeve. This tendency got me into some serious problems in my past relationships but you and I are more alike than you realize."
"How so?"
"Jerry, when I met Jax I was not looking for a relationship. It was the furthest thing from my mind. I closed myself off to him. I was not willing to risk letting him in for fear of having my heart ripped out again. I almost lost any chance I ever had for true happiness. I just don't want you to make that mistake."
Jerry shook his head at his sister-in-law as he got up and poured himself a drink. She was like a cheering section at times. She wanted everyone to experience the perfect life she had now. "Brenda, I appreciate that but I think that your romantic ideals are best suited for you and my baby brother."
Brenda folded her arms in front of her. "Jerry Jacks, I can't believe this. I thought you were fearless and now it seems that your courage stops when it comes to any matter concerning your heart."
Jerry laughed at her. "You are too funny."
"I'm totally serious. You are afraid to open yourself up. Until you do, you will never know how love can change your life. I can't believe the both of you."
"What are you talking about? What both of you are you referring to?"
Brenda cleared her throat. She had said this much so why don't say a little more. "I can't believe that I have had this same conversation with two members of my family in less than a three week period. What is it with you older siblings?"
"You can't be comparing me to that sister of yours?"
"I most certainly am."
"Julia and I are not alike at all."
Now it was Brenda's turn to laugh. "You two are so much alike it is scary."
Jerry took a sip of his brandy. "Brenda, you are delusional this evening."
"I am perfectly rational. You two have built up so many walls around yourselves that you can't see it. You are also both running scared."
Jerry swallowed the rest of his brandy. "This conversation is getting ridiculous."
"Tell me why you aren't coming to Cortina then."
Jerry was getting exasperated now. "I have too much work to do. I have deadlines for Canadian Timber and my Munich deal."
Brenda rolled her eyes. "As if there are no phones, fax machines, modems or overnight courier facilities in Italy." She knew she had pushed Jerry to his limit so she decided to end this round with one last bit of information. "Well, I guess it does not really matter. I mean it has been almost six hours since the last time Julia asked me if you had changed your mind about coming with us."
"She has been asking you if I am coming?"
Brenda ignored the question and started gathering her magazines and pamphlets. "Have you seen the latest edition of the New England Journal of Medicine? I had it here earlier."
Jerry stepped toward the sofa and picked up the periodical and handed it to her. "Brenda, what did Julia say?"
"About what?"
Jerry closed his eyes momentarily out of sheer frustration. How did Jax put up with this cyclone? "About the ski trip."
"She wanted to know if you were coming with us?"
"Did she say why she was asking?"
Brenda walked toward the door with her bundle of reading materials and turned to Jerry. "I know why and so do both you and Julia on some level. The real question is just how long is it going to take the two of you to admit it."
She walked out of the room leaving Jerry in a very frustrated and confused state. Brenda smiled as she walked down the hall toward the stairs. Round one had gone pretty well. She was going to get Jerry and Julia to admit their true feelings if it killed her. Knowing Jerry and Julia, it probably would kill her.

Cortina d'Ampezzo -- 9:00am
Cortina d'Ampezzo is a fashionable resort in the heart of the Dolomites. It is known as the "Pearl of the Dolomites." Luxury hotels, resort and private villas are scattered throughout the region and the main square in the center of town contains elegant shops and chic restaurants. Opulence and wealth are apparent throughout the city. There are strong Venetian and Austrian cultural influences everywhere. Home to the Winter Olympics in 1956, Cortina offers some of the best skiing in all of Europe.
The chalet that Brenda had won from Thao was more like a castle than the typical ski chalet. The chalet was situated in the heart of the mountain range so the jagged mountains provided the backdrop to the house. It was luxuriously furnished and contained an indoor swimming pool. The bedrooms all had open gingerbread balconies which provided them with sun porches. There were beautiful stone fireplaces in most of the rooms. There was a gazebo on the grounds for enjoyment in the summer months. The chalet had its own private cable car to the main area of town.
Jax, Brenda and Jillian had arrived in Cortina two days ago and Brenda had fallen in love with the chalet within the first thirty seconds of their arrival. It had been almost ten years since she had last visited Cortina with her father and Julia. Even though the times with her family were not happy then, Brenda always had considered Cortina to be her favorite ski resort. Now there would be much happier memories from this snow-filled paradise.
Julia had arrived from her business meetings in London late last night. Jerry had remained in Port Charles but Brenda had not given up hope yet about getting him to Cortina. She had decided to not press the issue completely before they had left Port Charles but every day she was dropping small hints about Julia and about Jerry taking a chance on finding happiness. Jax was not exactly thrilled with her efforts but he knew he could not stop her even if he wanted to. Jax had just told her to leave him out of her scheming.
Jax and Brenda were sitting at the table eating breakfast as Julia came into the dining room. "Good morning everyone!"
Brenda poured Julia a cup of coffee. "Good morning. How did you sleep?"
"Great for the first time all week."
"Did everything get straightened out with Barrett?"
Julia nodded. "Finally, I never thought I was going to get here."
Jax handed Julia the cream and sugar. "Well, you are here now for some well deserved rest and relaxation."
"Are you sure you don't want to join us on the slopes? We have arranged for the housekeeper's daughter, Annamarie, to be here with Jillian."
"Brenda, I think I need today to wind down before hitting the mountain. You and Dad were the real skiers in the family."
Jax laughed. "Don't give her a bigger head than she already has about her skiing expertise. She was relentless yesterday."
Brenda swatted him on the arm. "You are just jealous because I beat you down the slalom course."
Jax shook his head at her. "You skipped three gates."
"Why do you have to be such a perfectionist?"
Julia laughed at their tiff. "I'll get out tomorrow and try my luck. You two should make a day of it. I can relieve Annamarie when she needs to go home."
Brenda smiled at Julia. "We will be back shortly after nightfall. We do have plans to have dinner in town tomorrow night." Brenda looked at Jax. "Jax is buying since he lost the race."
Jax rolled his eyes at Brenda. "No, I am buying because I am a gentleman. I did not lose the race."
Brenda patted his hand with hers. "Whatever you say, honey."
Jax chuckled. "I am going to finish getting dressed. I will check on Jillian."
"Thanks honey. I'll be up shortly."
Jax squeezed Brenda's shoulders and then walked out of the kitchen and Julia smiled.
Brenda gave her an inquisitive look. "What are you smiling about?"
"The fact that you are happy. I know you were not happy when we used to spend the holidays here with Daddy."
Brenda took a deep breath. "That was a long time ago, Julia. Besides, I always loved Cortina itself. I learned how to ski here. All that matters is that I am happy now and I am so glad you are here with us."
Julia cleared her throat and tried to act nonchalantly. "So, Jerry did not change his mind about joining us?"
Brenda smiled to herself. "No, but you could always call and ask him to come."
Julia put down her coffee cup. "Why would I do that?"
Brenda rolled her eyes. "Maybe because you enjoy his company or maybe because you miss him?"
"Neither of them is true so why in the world would I call him. Even if I was suffering from insanity and wanted to call him, he would never come if I asked him to do so. In fact, he would probably travel in the opposite direction."
Brenda shook her head and got up from the table. "I don't think so. Not based on my conversations with him."
"What conversations with him? He talked to you about me?"
Brenda grinned as she walked away from Julia toward the door. Good grief Julia and Jerry were so much alike, it was ridiculous.
"I am going up to get dressed."
"Brenda, what did he say?"
"What did who say?"
Julia sighed. "Jerry. What were you just talking about?"
Brenda waved her hand in the air. "Oh that. Jerry has just asked me on several occasions if you were asking if he was coming with us."
Julia felt herself getting flushed. "Why would that matter to him?"
Brenda turned toward Julia before leaving the dining room. "I will give you three guesses and the first two do not count."
Julia rubbed her eyes as Brenda walked out of the room. It was only a little after 9:00am and she was already getting a headache. Brenda smiled as she climbed the stairs to the bedroom. These rounds were getting easier and easier.
Cortina d'Ampezzo -- 4:00pm
Jax and Brenda had spent the morning on the slopes. Brenda giggled like a little girl as they flew done the hills. Jax's heart was full as he was mesmerized by her joy. All he ever wanted was to see Brenda happy and he knew that she was happier now than she had ever been. After their morning ski runs, they had enjoyed a late lunch at one of the chic restaurants in the main square and then browsed in a few of the elegant shops in town.
They were now traveling up the mountain to reach Tofana di Mezzo. They were riding in a cable car known as the Freccia Nel Cielo (or "arrow in the sky") -- a most popular attraction of the Cortina area. Tofana di Mezzo was the top station of the cable car route and stood at an elevation of over 10,500 feet. Brenda had never been to the top and Jax was anxious to see her reaction when they reached the peak.
When they reached the top, Brenda's breath caught in her throat. It was the most magnificent view she had ever seen. Some people claim that such a ride takes one "halfway to the stars" and the expression was perfect for the vista. Brenda felt as if she could almost touch the sun. Jax wrapped his arms around Brenda as she stood mesmerized by the view.
"Jax, it is breathtaking."
"I know." Jax turned her face toward him. "And now that you are here, it is twice as breathtaking." Jax then kissed her forehead.
Brenda closed her eyes to savor the moment. "Thank you for today. It was perfect."
"I want this place to only be filled with happy memories for you."
"How could it not when I am here with you? Everywhere we go together can only be filled with happy memories. You make every day extraordinary just like you told me you would."
"I just want to make sure that your past memories here don't interfere with today or tomorrow's remembrances. I want this place always to be special for us."
She did not want to cry but she knew it was inevitable. Sometimes the love she felt for him completely overwhelmed her. Tears began slipping from the corners of her eyes as she melted into his arms. "What did I ever do to deserve you?"
Jax grinned. It always amazed him just how much his love affected her. "You must have walked on water or rid the world of some plague."
The sun was setting over the mountains now and the view was even more magnificent. It was a beautifully clear day making the visibility range one hundred miles. Brenda looked out the binoculars Jax had brought with them and saw some familiar sights.
"Jax, that looks like Venice."
"It is. On clear days, you can see the city. Do you see the domes of the Basilica di San Marco?"
Brenda smiled. "Yes, I can see them. This is incredible."
"I know how much you love Venice. Maybe when we come back over the summer, we will spend a few days in the canal city."
Brenda hands the binoculars to Jax. "That would be perfect."
He ran his fingers under Brenda's chin. "Then we will have to be sure to do it."
Jax took Brenda back in his arms and they watched the sun fall from the sky. Darkness began to appear and the moon and first stars of the night peaked through the midnight blue sky. The lights of Cortina below and those of the cities within the visibility range began to shine beneath them. It was majestic and almost surreal. Brenda felt like she was in paradise.
She took a deep breath. "This reminds me of the time we were in California and you took me to the vista to see the lights of Los Angeles."
"Yes, but now you are mine."
Brenda turned toward Jax and stroked his cheek with her palm. "Yes, all yours."
Jax kissed her palm. "And I am all yours."
The moon was reflecting from Brenda's dark brown eyes as she felt warm and protected in Jax's arms. "I love you Jax."
Jax's deep blue eyes twinkled as he held her. "And I love you, my darling."
They stood there in the moonlight and for a moment the rest of the world below stood still.
Cortina d'Ampezzo -- 9:00pm
Jax and Brenda were sitting on the floor in front of a roaring fire in the huge stone fireplace in the family room of the chalet. Jillian was playing on a down comforter next to them. It had started to snow an hour before and the glistening snowflakes could be seen in the moonlight through the huge french doors leading out onto the terrace.
Jillian looked up with wide bright eyes as she sucked on her plush toy.
Brenda smiled at the baby. "You should be asleep, little girl, but that looks like it is the furthest thing from your mind right now."
Jax laughed and grinned at Jillian. "Tell Mommy that it is only the middle of the afternoon in Port Charles so you are not ready to go to bed yet."
Jillian cooed and Brenda shook her head. "I can see it now, she will finally adjust to this time zone just in time for us to return home at the end of the week."
Jax took Brenda's hand in his. "You are probably right. She will learn to adjust. As a Jacks, she will get used to traveling all over the world."
Jillian laughed and grabbed the set of toy keys sitting next to her. Brenda reached over and picked her up. "Yes, Jillian, you will learn to adjust. In the meantime, try not to keep Mommy and Daddy up all night."
Brenda kissed Jillian's cheek and then looked at Jax. "I can't believe she is five months old today."
"Neither can I, yet I can barely remember when she was not a part of us."
"It is still almost incomprehensible that I had anything to do with creating her. She is the best thing I have ever done in my life."
"Of course she is. I feel the same way about her. It merely shows us the power and strength of love and what it can create."
"I never understood how powerful love was until I realized how much I loved you. I just wish everyone else could realize that."
Jax put his arms around Brenda and she rested her head against his shoulder. "I know how much your sister's happiness means to you. She will find true happiness one day. She just needs a little more time."
"I hope so."
Jax ran his fingers through Brenda's hair. "Why did she make herself scarce this evening?"
"I think she was worried she was invading our space so she left us alone. Jax, I wish she weren't so lonely."
"I know sweetie. That's why I thought about inviting Thao to come spend a few days with us here. He and Julia get along very well and they could get out and I know how much Thao would love to take her out and show her some of the sights."
Brenda's eyes flew open, this was not part of her plan. She remained perfectly calm however. "Did you speak to him about it?"
"Yes. Unfortunately, he will be in Hong Kong next week so the timing is off."
"That's a shame. Maybe next time." Brenda breathed a collective sigh of relief but then thought that the idea may come in handy for her.
They sat in front of the fire for another half an hour and Jillian began to fuss. Brenda picked her up again. "It's time to eat based on your Port Charles schedule, isn't it?"
Jax stood up. "I'll take her and see if I can get her down. You just sit here and enjoy the fire."
Brenda handed the baby to Jax. "Thanks honey. Her pajamas are on the dresser in her room." She grabbed Jillian's hand. "Mommy will come up and see you in a little while, sweetheart."
Jax went upstairs and Brenda grabbed her phone book and the phone. It was time to move this along. She made her preliminary calls and arrangements and then placed the most important call of all. She crossed her fingers in hopes that this would work.
The phone was picked up on the third ring. "Hello, Jacks Residence."
"Are we going to have to pay you to be our answering service?"
Jerry laughed. "Good evening Brenda or should I say buona sera."
"Buon giorno to you since it is only the afternoon there."
"How are things in the Dolomites? Has my brother chased any snow bunnies yet?"
Brenda laughed. "Trust me, he won't be chasing any snow bunnies."
"I would think not. Otherwise he will be coming home in a box."
Brenda took a deep breath. "I did not think you would be home. I know how much work you have to do. I was trying to reach Corrine."
"I told her to take the weekend off. There was no need for her to be here with just me around."
Brenda smiled. Corrine had left a message on Brenda's voice mail yesterday to ensure that it was okay for her to be off this weekend. "I seem to be missing the latest projection for the renovations to the Wellington Hotel building for Kanga's Kradle. Could I trouble you to go into the files in the office and look for them?"
"Sure, hold on."
Jerry came back on the line a few moments later. "I found them."
"Great. Will you fax them over? I know they are going to be difficult to read but my eyes will have to suffer."
"I will send them over when I get off the phone with you. How is the weather?"
"It has been great. We are having our first snow this evening but it is supposed to end before dawn so we should be able to get on the trails in the morning."
"How is Jillian?"
"Jax is trying to put her to bed now. She has not yet adjusted to Italian time."
"I am sure you all are having a great time."
"Most of us are."
Jerry sighed. "What is your sister's problem now? That woman would not know how to have a good time if someone gave her a manual."
Brenda bit her lip to keep from laughing at his bravado. "It is hard being the third wheel around Jax and me. I guess that is why she asked if you had changed your mind about meeting us."
"She asked about me again?"
"Jerry, would you really expect otherwise? I don't understand why you aren't here but that is your decision. You will have to live with it. Jax has figured out a way to entertain Julia anyway."
Jerry rolled his eyes. "What is he doing, hiring the circus?"
"No, he wants Thao to come join us. With Thao here, I know Julia will certainly not be lonely. In fact, we probably will never see her since Thao knows all the best places to show her. You know how much he likes to show off. He will probably do his best to simply sweep her off her feet."
Jerry was gritting his teeth and Brenda smirked at the silence on the other end. "Brenda, Thao is no good for Julia. Good God, he is nothing more than overgrown lothario. I don't think that is a good idea."
"Jerry, you know Jax. He just wants to make everyone happy. He thinks that some companionship will make Julia happy." Brenda slyly smiled. "Jerry, wait a minute that is the other line. Maybe it's Thao, hold on."
"Brenda, wait." There was nothing but static on the other end and Jerry was grinding his teeth. He began pacing with the portable phone cradled at his ear and his mind was racing. So, Julia had asked about him again. His conversations with Brenda from last week were gnawing at him. He was beginning to think she was right and now Thao was going to be in the picture. This was totally unacceptable. The Greek casanova was not going to get in his way.
Brenda tapped her fingers on the phone and finally decided that Jerry had stewed long enough. She released the hold button. "Sorry, it was for me about Kanga's Kradle. Well, I better let you get back to all your work."
"Brenda, I have been thinking."
Brenda was about ready to burst but she managed to restrain herself. "What is it Jerry?"
"I think I need a few days away from this mess. I think a few days in the mountains will be quite rejuvenating."
"Great, when can we expect you?"
"I will make a few phone calls and throw some things in a suitcase and try to get out of here this evening."
"Jerry, you won't regret this."
"Brenda, I do not know what you mean."
Brenda giggled. "Fine. I only have two things to say."
"That fact alone will make the evening news."
Brenda smiled. "As I was saying, the first is that there is only one thing worse than a broken heart and believe me I know all about broken hearts. Jerry, the only thing worse than a broken heart is an empty heart."
Jerry sighed. "What is the other monumental thing you have to say to me."
Brenda cleared her throat. "There is a first class ticket waiting for you at the TWA ticket counter for the 7:30pm flight. I have arranged for a car to pick you up at the airport to bring you to the chalet tomorrow morning."
Jerry could not help but smile at Brenda's sheer audacity. "You were mighty sure of yourself, weren't you? No wonder my brother loves you so much, you are a Jacks through and through."
"Thank you, I take that as a true compliment."
"It was meant as such but don't think you are going to get your way all the time. We will have a chat when I get there."
Brenda was beaming. "I can't wait. Have a safe trip and don't be late. It is almost 4:00 there."
Jerry rolled his eyes. "Good-bye Brenda or should I say Mum."
"Arrivederci Jerry."
Brenda leaned back against the couch and closed her eyes. "Yes!"
Jax was standing in the doorway of the family room with his arms folded in front of him shaking his head. "You did it, didn't you?"
Brenda opened her eyes and began to giggle as he walked over to her.
Jax sat down next to her. "I don't even want to know how."
Brenda crawled into his lap. "I didn't do anything illegal so you don't have to worry about that."
Jax smiled down at her. "Well, I guess that is something."
"Jax, don't say anything to Julia in the morning. Let her be surprised. Honey, also don't say anything to Jerry about Thao being in Hong Kong this week."
Jax threw his head back and began to laugh. "You pushed every button, didn't you?"
"Of course. How the hell else did you think I was going to convince him to come? My God, he is stubborn but I figured I had a better shot with him than with Julia. He still thinks I am entertaining so he puts up with me."
"He also thinks you are adorable but who can blame him?"
Brenda kissed Jax on the cheek. "Is the baby asleep?"
"Yes, I don't know for how long though."
Brenda wrapped her arms around Jax's neck. "Then I guess we had better take advantage of the peace and quiet now since we are going to lose our Sunday morning time together tomorrow."
Jax grinned at Brenda. "You are brilliant, Mrs. Jacks."
"Thank you. Do I get a reward?"
"I think that can be arranged."
Jax lifted Brenda's chin and captured her mouth with a long, drugging kiss. Brenda's fingers became entangled in the back of his hair, as Jax lowered her to the comforter in front of the fire. There, they spent the evening basking in their love as their passions were fulfilled.
Meanwhile, Jerry was on his way to the airport and he was preparing to take the biggest chance of his life. Risking it all was terrifying but he knew it was the only way. Tomorrow a new chapter would begin and he could not stop wondering if maybe his empty heart would finally be fulfilled.
