Chapter 14 - PG
Love Heals All Things

Chalet in Cortina d'Ampezzo -- 10:00am

Brenda had finished feeding Jillian her cereal and had put the baby down for her morning nap. Jax and Julia were sitting in the dining room discussing some J & J Jacks business. Brenda came from downstairs after getting dressed for their skiing adventure later this morning. Annamarie was coming over in about a half an hour to take care of Jillian. Brenda still had not said anything to Julia about Jerry's impending arrival. He was due at the chalet any minute now.

Jax smiled as Brenda entered the room. "Sweetie, is she asleep?"

"Yes. She should sleep for most of the morning so Annamarie will have a break."

Julia laughed. "She was certainly entertaining this morning eating her cereal."

Brenda shook her head. "Some days I am wearing more rice cereal than I get into her. She is still not too crazy about it but it has only been a few days since she started eating it so I guess there is still hope."

Jax gave Brenda a big grin and then turned to Julia. "You see Jillian takes after her Mother in her eating habits. Poor child."

Julia tilted her head. "What does that mean exactly?"

Brenda walked behind Jax's chair and put her hands on his shoulders. "That means she would prefer eating a glazed chocolate donut than something that is good for her. Rice cereal is analogous to yogurt and bananas. Yuck."

Jax put his hand over Brenda's and laughed. "I can see it now, she will be eating donuts for breakfast, Fritos for lunch and pizza at midnight."

Brenda pulled her hands off of Jax's shoulders and put her hands on her hips feigning disgust. "I don't eat Fritos. They are Doritos."

Jax laughed. "Pardon me. Doritos for lunch then."

Brenda raised her eyebrow at Jax. "Very funny, Mr. Jacks."

The sound of a car door slam was then heard. Brenda took a deep breath while Jax eyed her intently.

Julia looked up. "Was that a car door?"

The housekeeper, Evelina, went to get the door and Brenda motioned for Jax to leave the dining room and greet their guest.

Jax walked into the foyer just as Jerry and the driver were entering the chalet.

"Buon giorno, little brother. Do you think there is enough snow out there? I thought Alaska was bad."

Jax laughed. "You weren't expecting the tropics, were you? You did bring snow skis rather than water skis I presume."

"Of course. Someone has to teach you how to ski after all these years. It looks like you are still in one piece thus far. I guess you have only been on the bunny slopes then."

Jax just shook his head as the Jerry took off his coat and the driver brought in the rest of his bags.

Meanwhile in the dining room, Julia's ears immediately perked up at the sound of Jerry's voice. "That sounds like Jerry. Brenda, he is here isn't he and you knew about it?"

Brenda nonchalantly sat down in her chair at the table. "Yes, he changed his mind about coming."

"I can't believe you did not tell me."

"I have only known since last night and you were already in bed."

Julia glared at Brenda. "What about the past two hours this morning?"

Brenda shrugged her shoulders. "It slipped my mind."

"Brenda, I don't believe this." Julia was now flustered and began running her hands through her hair to straighten it.

Brenda's face registered a sly grin. "What is the matter? It's not a big deal. It is only Jerry."

Julia tried to calm down. "Nothing is the matter. Why would you think otherwise?"

"I just thought you were upset that you had not put on your make-up yet this morning. Since you are not, I guess I won't give it to you."

"Give what to me?"

Brenda reached into the pocket of her cardigan sweater and pulled out Julia's compact and lipstick. "I picked up these off the vanity in your bathroom but I see you don't want them."

"Give them to me." Julia reached for them and Brenda laughed.

"Julia, calm down."

Julia quickly applied the compact puff to her face and smoothed the lipstick over her lips. The sound of Jerry and Jax's footsteps were heard coming toward the dining room. Julia threw the compact and lipstick toward Brenda who caught them and quickly slid them back into her pocket.

Julia then whispered to Brenda. "I am going to get you for this."

Brenda smirked and mouthed back to her. "You will thank me some day."

Jax and Jerry walked into the dining room and Brenda rose from her chair to hug Jerry. "Welcome to the winter wonderland. How was your trip?"

"Typical. All the flight attendants wanted my phone number and they drew straws to see who would be assigned to me in first class."

Brenda smiled and shook her head at Jerry. "One day the airlines are just going to ban you from traveling. I am sure the commotion and chaos you cause for the flight attendants are wreaking havoc on the flights for the other passengers."

"So true. Plus the heart palpitations I cause for the flight attendants force some of them to require medical assistance during the flight."

Jax rolled his eyes. "Yes, the flight attendants need insect repellent to keep you away from them."

Jerry laughed and finally looked at Julia. "No comments from the peanut gallery? This must be a record for you keeping your mouth shut. Or better yet, please tell me you have laryngitis from the mountain air."

Julia folded her arms in front of her and stared at Jerry. "I was just waiting for you to wake up. Your dream is over, or if we are speaking from the perspective of the flight attendants, the nightmare is over."

Brenda saw a small smile form in the corner of Jerry's mouth even though she knew he was fighting to suppress it.

Jerry let out a sigh. "No laryngitis. Damn."

Brenda bit the inside of her cheek to stop from laughing. "Are we all ready for a day gliding down the hills?"

Jerry rubbed his hands together. "I know I am but I bet some of us will be rolling down the hills screaming as opposed to swishing down them." Jerry then looked directly at Julia.

Julia shot up out of the chair. "Speak for yourself, Bozo. They will be sending the St. Bernards and rescue teams after you."

Jerry followed Julia to the door. "Is that supposed to be a joke? You are not with those stuffed shirt Brits anymore, remember?"

"You are so full of yourself, Jerry Jacks."

"Who else would I be full of Miss Barrett?"

Jerry and Julia continued their arguing as they left the dining room and walked up the stairs to the bedrooms.

Jax shook his head and sat back down at the table. "Oh, this is going to be fun. Which one is going to push the other off the side of a cliff first? This was a great idea, sweetie."

Brenda wrapped her arms around his neck and smiled. "Trust me on this. It is going to work out, I can feel it."

Jax took one look at her beaming face and was defenseless. "Sure it will. If it doesn't, we should at least be able to get a script out of it for a Made for TV movie."

Brenda giggled and then nuzzled Jax's neck. It was going to be an interesting few days.

Ski Slopes in Cortina d'Ampezzo -- 1:00pm

Brenda and Jax had spent the past two hours laughing and racing down the expert downhill runs of Cortina. They had alternated victories in the contests down the hills. They were gliding down the course on their last run before meeting Jerry and Julia for lunch. It was the tiebreaker for the morning races and the loser had to buy the other lunch.

Brenda was streaming down the right side of the course and she had not yet seen Jax out of the corner of her eye as she passed the midpoint of the hill. The snow was spraying behind Brenda as she flew down the hill. As Brenda neared the bottom of the course, she caught sight of someone. She knew Jax was right beside her. Brenda got into a lower tuck position in an attempt to pick up speed at the bottom of the hill. As they reached the end of the course, they crossed the finish line together in a tie.

Brenda pulled off her goggles. "A tie, it can't be a tie."

Jax shook his head. "You are just upset that I caught you at the end especially after you took off on the count of two rather than three."

"I did not do that."

Jax rolled his eyes. "You most certainly did."

Brenda waved her hand at him. "You must be seeing things. Wait a minute. Since your skis are longer than mine, then it is only fair that I be declared the victor."

Jax laughed. "Forget it."

Brenda put her hands on her hips. "I thought you were a gentleman."

"That was yesterday, today I am a competitor and giving you the victory is out of the question."

Brenda took his hand in hers. "But honey, look how much longer your skis are then mine. I should be given credit for the win because of that."

Jax flashed her a huge grin. "Tough luck, kiddo."

Brenda gave him a very sexy pout hoping to have him reconsider but Jax only smiled and kissed her on the corner of the mouth. "You still will get your victory dinner tonight from yesterday's race even though you did not fairly win that one either. Lunch, however, will be dutch treat. I will buy yours and you will buy mine."

Brenda rolled her eyes. "Fine, but believe me I will not be ordering just Doritos."

Jax chuckled and kissed her again this time fully on the lips. "You can order whatever you want. Let's go find Julia and Jerry and see if either has been arrested yet for attempted murder."

On the intermediate slopes, Julia reached the bottom of the hill and looked at her watch. Noting that it was close to 2:00pm, she began to make her way back to the lodge area to meet Jax and Brenda. She had no idea where Jerry was and she hoped to keep it that way. Suddenly, she heard something behind her and she turned around. Jerry came whizzing by her and made a quick right turn as he stopped immediately in front of her. He sent a spray of snow toward her as he stopped.

"You, jackass, get away from me."

"Didn't you miss me?"

Julia took off her goggles and rolled her eyes. "You are dreaming again, buffoon. I was actually hoping you ran into a tree. Maybe then, you would have some sense knocked into you."

"See, I knew it. You were thinking about me so you must have missed me."

Julia glared at him and turned to begin to make her way to the lodge for lunch. She hit a patch of ice and started to lose her balance. Jerry lunged for her to grab her arm which caused him to lose his balance causing them both to fall to the ice.

Julia began hitting Jerry with her ski pole. "Get off of me. Look what you have done."

Jerry sighed. "I was trying to prevent you from falling."

"You were a big help with that. This is your fault. Don't touch me."

Jerry removed his skis and got to his feet. "Fine. Have it your way."

Julia tried to get to her feet but the ice patch prevented her from doing so. She could not get enough of a grip to stand up. Jerry stood and watched her and began whistling.

Julia tightened her fingers into a fist as she gritted her teeth. "I can't get up."

Jerry folded his arms in front of him. "I can see that."

"Get over here and help me get to my feet."

"I thought you didn't want me to touch you. Have you changed your mind?"

It looked like smoke was about to come out of Julia's ears. "Yes, you idiot. Help me up."

Jerry did not move. "I didn't hear you say please."

Julia clenched her teeth. "Please."

Jerry unlocked her skis and helped Julia to her feet. He handed her all four ski poles and then picked up both sets of their skis.

"It is faster if you walk the rest of the way. Otherwise, we will be meeting Jax and Brenda for dinner rather than lunch."

Julia glared at him. "You are ..."

"Handsome, talented and irresistible. I know that already." Jerry started walking toward the lodge. He looked back at Julia. "Are you coming?"

Julia took a deep breath and followed him as she began thinking. He was going to drive her completely insane. Why was she insisting on letting him get to her? Julia shuddered because she feared the answer and more importantly she feared she could not put a stop to her feelings.

Cortina d'Ampezzo -- 9:30pm

After lunch, everyone had spent another hour on the course before heading back to the chalet. Julia had offered to take care of Jillian while Jax and Brenda went into town for the evening for Brenda's slalom race victory dinner. Jerry and Julia had continued their bantering all afternoon. Julia had noticed that Jerry was slightly limping. She suspected that Jerry had injured his leg when they had fallen on the ice before the lunch but Mr. Macho was not letting on that anything was wrong with him.

Brenda and Jax had left the chalet earlier in the evening. Their first stop was at the main bar of the De la Poste Hotel in the main square of town. The bar was the most fashionable location in the resort for early evening drinks and entertainment. After toasting to their evening together, Jax and Brenda moved to El Toula for dinner. El Toula, known for its fantastic Venetian cuisine, was the most elegant dining spot in Cortina. The restaurant provided a panoramic view of the mountains and the city. There was also a huge stone fireplace in the center of the restaurant. After dinner, they were heading to the Bilbo Club for dancing.

As they sat at a cozy, corner table by the huge picture window at El Toula, Jax gazed at Brenda as the reflection of the candlelight flickered in her huge brown eyes. Her face was glowing and her eyes were sparkling brighter than the diamond earrings which hung from her ear lobes. Her full beautiful lips flashed him a radiant smile. She looked more incredible than usual. Jax let a deep sigh escape his lips as he finally remembered to breathe.

Brenda lowered her eyes from Jax's gaze for a second and then took a deep breath herself. She felt like Jax was looking directly into her soul and a feeling of overwhelming warmth shot through her. "Darling, you are doing it again."

Jax smiled at her. "What sweetie?"

"You are looking right into my soul."

Jax brought her hand to his lips and tenderly kissed her velvety skin. Brenda trembled at the feel of his loving touch. "Your soul is the most incredible part of you. We share the same soul now so seeing yours is the same as seeing mine."

Brenda swallowed hard. The love she felt for him still amazed her. "Do you know how much I love you? I love you with every ounce of my heart and I will so long as there is a breath left in my body."

Jax whispered to her as he held her hand. "I know, baby. I feel the same way."

"Does it ever scare you?"

"What my love?"

"How perfect everything seems. Sometimes I have nightmares about waking up one day with nothing. Not you, not Jillian, just nothing."

"That is not going to happen. We have talked about this. I am not going anywhere."

"I know but you have given me so much happiness over the past two years, I am fearful that I have surpassed my quota. I am just afraid midnight is going to come and I will be in the garden with nothing but a pumpkin and some field mice."

"Sweetie, don't you know that with happiness, just like love, there are no boundaries. You make your own happiness and I am not about to give up mine. That means you, so you will just have to get used to it. You are sentenced to a life of happiness."

Jax stroked Brenda's cheek with his palm and she turned her face toward his embrace. "I used to sit in my bed at night when I was growing up and would make believe I lived in a place where everything was perfect, where no one could hurt me, where love reigned. I just never imagined that such a place really existed but it does Jax. You have given it to me. I don't mean the material possessions and gifts you give me. I mean the important things." Brenda pointed to herself. "Jax, you actually love me, Brenda Barrett Jacks, with all my faults and imperfections. We have a beautiful daughter and God willing we will have more babies some day. You have given me everything anyone could ever want. You have enabled me to live in my own fairytale."

Jax shook his head at Brenda. She still didn't get it sometimes. "Don't you know that you give me everything that you claim I give to you? Don't you know that no one has ever given me the love and support that you gave me when we found out about Miranda? You have given me more joy than I ever thought possible. I have your love and your trust. I watched you carry and give birth to our daughter. Don't you see, you gave me my fairytale as well. My love, I would give up everything in a heartbeat so long as I had you and Jillian and any other children which we may be blessed with in the future. Nothing else matters but us."

Brenda sighed and then picked up her glass. "Here is to fairytales!"

Jax grinned at her as he clinked his glass with hers. "Here is to happy endings!"

Brenda closed her eyes and mouthed "thank you" to the heavens. He was her prince and she was his princess and her heart told her that they would live happily ever after in their castle filled with love.

Meanwhile, back at the chalet, Julia was rocking Jillian to sleep as Jerry took a shower. He had hoped that the stiffness in his hamstring would subside after his shower but that was not the case. He was not about to admit to Julia that he was hurt so he gingerly snuck down the steps while she was in the nursery with the baby. He grimaced as he descended the stairs and unbeknownst to him, Julia stood in the nursery doorway and witnessed the entire scene.

Julia walked down the steps and entered the living room with a blanket tucked underneath her arm. Jerry was lying on the couch and the fire was beginning to burn out in the fireplace.

Julia sat down on the chair next to the couch and looked at the dwindling flames of the fire. "The fire is burning out."

Jerry looked up from his magazine. "So I see."

"You are the back woodsman here, aren't you going to put some more logs on the fire?"

"It is not that cold outside. We can let the fire die out."

"Jerry, it is ten degrees outside. How much further does the mercury have to dip for it to be cold?"

"It is fine in here."

"I am cold."

"Then put a sweater on or wrap that blanket around you."

"So you want Jax and Brenda to walk into a cold living room after coming in from the freezing temperatures outside?"

"Fine. I will put some logs on the fire just to shut you up. You would try the patience of the Pope."

Julia covered her mouth to hide her smile as Jerry tried to walk to the fireplace without evidencing his pain. When Jerry opened the wood box, he found it empty -- a fact that Julia already knew.

"Great, you and your ridiculous ideas." Jerry then carefully made his way to the door leading to the garage where a stack of dry wood was kept. Julia bit her cheek to stop from laughing out loud. She knew his leg was killing him but he refused to acknowledge such in her presence. Men were so arrogant when it came to their physical infirmities.

Jerry came back into the living room with the wood and had to bite his tongue to stop from screaming when he bent down to throw the logs on the fire. He caught his breath and turned to gingerly make his way back to the sofa. Once he laid down and propped his leg back up on the sofa, he finally took a deep breath.

Julia stood up and uncovered the heating pad she had hidden in the blanket she had carried from upstairs. "Here Mr. Invincible."

"What is this for?"

"Give it up Jerry. I know that your leg is killing you. You can stop that macho routine, it is not working."

"You are crazy."

Julia shook her head. "You have got to be the most stubborn, pig-headed man I have ever known. You are hurt, so what. You need to get some heat on that leg."

"Don't tell me what to do. Why do you have to be so irritating all the time?"

"What goes around comes around. Didn't you know it is my goal in life to irritate you? Two can play at that game, buster."

"You are insufferable."

Julia paid him no attention as she plugged in the heating pad and turned the control to the highest setting. "I am not going to listen to you whine for the next three days. Use it."

Jerry felt a wave of desire shoot through him as Julia's hand brushed against his as she handed him the heating pad. A strand of her hair fell onto her forehead when she leaned over him to set the controls on the heating pad. Jerry involuntarily reached up and gently brushed the hair from her face.

Julia trembled at the feel of his touch. She softly gasped and attempted to back away from the couch. Jerry sat up and grabbed her hand preventing her from retreating. He whispered her name as he pulled her onto the couch so that she was sitting beside him. She lowered her eyes from his gaze as Jerry stroked her cheek.

Jerry was tired of this charade they had been playing for months. "Julia, look at me."

Jerry lifted her chin and Julia looked into his baby blue eyes and sighed. He brought her lips to his and his mouth overtook hers. Julia moaned into his mouth as he deepened the kiss. Julia opened her mouth so that he could fully taste her. After a few moments, Julia lost all sense of her bearings. She had to stop this. Julia forced herself to break away from the passion of his lips.

Julia was breathless. "Jerry, we can't do this."

"Why? Do you have a husband somewhere that I don't know about?"

"Things would be much too complicated."

"Julia, they are already complicated and I am tired of fighting this."

"I am not interested in being one of your conquests to be passed off when they next cheerleader comes along."

"For God's sake, do you really think I would put up with your constant babbling and arrogance just for a few rolls in the hay? Do you really believe that is what I want from you?"

"Jerry, we have to work together and we have our respective families to consider. I can't jeopardize that. We need to forget this ever happened."

"Give it up, Julia. You and I both know what has been going on. What the hell do you think we have been trying to do for the past few months? We have been running away but nothing has changed. I won't do it anymore."

Julia swallowed hard. "Jerry, I'm sorry but I can't. There is nothing between us except maybe some physical attraction."

Julia pulled her hand from Jerry's grasp and hurried toward the door. Jerry called after her but she did not turn around. Her tears had begun to flow as she reached the staircase. Jerry heard her run up the stairs and he fell back onto the couch. What the hell had he just done and why did he feel such a sense of emptiness? This was a nightmare.

Monday, March 2, 1998
Chalet in Cortina d'Ampezzo -- 9:00am

Julia had never ventured out of her bedroom in the chalet after she hastily had left Jerry last night. She knew she was being a complete coward but she was not ready to face him again. She had cried and then been angry at herself for allowing her heart to ever become involved. Julia had spent most of the night tossing and turning while she tried to convince herself that this nightmare would be over soon. Unfortunately, as much as her head tried to assure her, her heart seemed to scream the opposite. Jerry Jacks had somehow worked his way into her heart but Julia was determined not to get hurt again. She could not allow this to go any further. Things would never work out between them.

Jerry, too, had spent a restless night. His first thought was to get on the first flight in the morning to go back to Port Charles. There, he would tie everything up and then get the hell out of town and not look back. No damn woman was worth this mess. Those thoughts soon changed, however. He remembered who he was and that he had never lost anything in his life that he really wanted. Jerry could no longer deny the fact that his heart had finally been stolen. He was not going to give up without a fight. Julia Barrett was not going to get the best of him. He knew she wanted him as much as he wanted her and he was going to get what he wanted.

Fortunately, all hearts had not suffering such misery in the chalet last evening. Jax and Brenda had returned from their romantic night on the town. The chalet was quiet when they arrived home. It was very late and Julia and Jerry had both gone to bed. Jax and Brenda checked on Jillian and found her sleeping peacefully. Jax and Brenda then spent the last few hours of their wonderful evening making gentle, tender love. With completely fulfilled hearts and souls, they then finally fell asleep entwined in each others' arms dreaming of their fairytale future together.

It was snowing very heavily when Jax and Brenda awoke and the storm was expected to last throughout most of the day. The next venture on the slopes would have to wait until tomorrow. Brenda was in the kitchen feeding Jillian her rice cereal while Jax went outside to bring more wood into the garage so that there would be dry firewood for this evening and tomorrow. Jerry hobbled into the kitchen and poured himself a mug of coffee.

"Good morning. Are you all right?"

"I'm fine. I had to wrestle a grizzly bear last night to protect my goddaughter. There is nothing to worry your pretty little head about."

Brenda rolled her eyes. "I am so glad the brave hunter was here. I feel sorry for the poor defenseless animal."

Jillian smiled at Jerry as Brenda shoved another spoonful of cereal in the baby's mouth. Jerry sat down at the table next to Brenda and Brenda saw a look of sadness in his eyes. "Jerry, what's wrong? Did something happen last night?"

"I don't understand what you mean."

"Jerry, I know you better than that. You and Jax get the same look in your eyes when something is troubling you. What happened with Julia last night after we left?"

Jerry put down his coffee mug. "Why don't you ask her?"

"She is upstairs in bed supposedly suffering from a migraine headache. I am asking you. What happened Jerry?"

"Fine. If you really want to know what happened, I will tell you. Things got a little bit too intense for that sister of yours and she ran away from me like I was the plague."

Brenda closed her eyes and sighed. "She didn't?"

Jerry nodded. "She did. She was running as if her life depended on it."

Brenda shook her head. "I don't believe this. When is she going to realize what she has to do to try to be happy?"

"After her little escapade last night, I planned to be on my way back to Port Charles this morning."

Brenda shot a quick pleading glance at Jerry. "No, Jerry, you can't do that. Julia will come around. I know how much she cares about you. She is just running scared."

Jerry raised his hand in the air to stop Brenda's worries. "I am not leaving. I am not going to make it that easy."

Brenda smiled. "Good. Does this mean you finally have admitted that you are falling in love with her?"

"Why do women have such an obsession with THAT word?"

Brenda smiled and stroked his hand with hers. "You have never said those words, have you?"

Jerry took a deep breath. "I am not like you and Jax. You say 'I love you' like most people say hello. I could never be like that."

"You don't have to be. Do you know that I was married to Jax for five months before I told him that I loved him? I was scared to death to think about the possibility, let alone say it. It will become easier. Right now, you need to concentrate on the next step. Jerry, I know how stubborn Julia is but she is afraid of having her heart ripped out again."

"Believe me, I would like to avoid the same predicament."

Brenda continued feeding Jillian. "What are you going to do?"

"I am trying to figure that out myself. I am not used to women running from me, you know."

Brenda laughed and then a devilish look crept over her face. Jerry recognized the look immediately. "What is it Brenda? Have you figured out some completely devious plot?"

"I was just thinking that my sister has only seen you as a challenge for all these months. You were denying your feelings just like she was. Now that you have finally seen the light, maybe a change in tactics is needed?"

"Like what?"

"I think Julia needs a lesson in old-fashioned courting."

Jerry rolled his eyes. "Courting? Get a grip! I have never had to court a woman in my life."

Brenda finished feeding Jillian. "Maybe it is time to start now. Unless you have decided that Julia is right so you are just going to give up?"

Jerry frowned. "That is not an option."

Brenda smiled. "Then I suggest you take some lessons from your brother. Believe me, he has this courting thing down to an art form."

Jerry shook his head. "God, look at you. You get that dazed, puppy love look just by thinking about it. I don't want to look like you two when you are off in fantasy land."

Brenda swatted Jerry on the arm. "Stop making fun of your brother. He is one of the last of the true romantics. He is Cary Grant and Robert Browning and St. Valentine all wrapped up into one."

"Stop. I think I am going to be sick."

Brenda hit Jerry again on the arm. "Fine. If you don't want to take my advice, then don't. Just don't come running to me six months from now when you are in the same position as you are today."

She picked up Jillian from the infant seat and began to walk toward the door. Brenda then turned around and faced Jerry. "Jerry, there is one more thing. The romance makes the sex SOOOO much better."

Jerry shook his head and smiled. Women, especially the two Barrett women in his life. They certainly made the world a very interesting place.

Chalet in Cortina d'Ampezzo -- 2:00pm

Jax had spent all morning on the phone dealing with a problem in one of the mines in Australia. Brenda had checked on Julia earlier and Julia had finally fallen asleep. Brenda and Jerry had spent most of the morning talking about Julia and her stubborn streak. Brenda had decided that she would not bring the subject of Jerry up again with Julia. It was still snowing but the winds had begun to subside. Amelia was making lunch for everyone and Brenda then went upstairs to check on Jillian who was napping. While she was upstairs, Brenda also decided to see how Julia was feeling.

Brenda quietly opened the door to Julia's room and Julia opened her eyes. "I'm sorry, I just wanted to see if there was anything I could get for you."

"No thanks."

"You should really eat something. I can bring up a tray."

"Maybe later."

"We'll be right downstairs if you need anything. Just hit the intercom button on the phone."

"Thank you."

"I hope you feel better. I'll be back later to check on you."

Brenda went downstairs and met Jax as he was entering the dining room for lunch. "What is the situation in Melbourne?"

Jax pulled out Brenda's chair for her and then sat down himself at the dining room table. "Resolved -- at least temporarily."

Brenda gently rubbed his hand with hers. "Good. I have missed you all day."

Jax smiled and interlocked his fingers with hers. "Me too, sweetie. Tonight we can curl up by the fire and just be together."

Brenda smiled. "That sounds like heaven to me."

Jerry then came into the dining room and lunch was served. As they finished, Jax asked about Julia. "Don't you think Amelia should bring her up some lunch? She has not eaten since last night."

Brenda took a sip of her water. "I asked but she said she did not want anything now."

Jerry shook his head. "That is because she is being obstinate as usual. She needs to eat."

Brenda slyly smiled at Jerry. "You are right. Maybe she just needs some gentle persuasion from a concerned friend."

Jerry caught her gaze and line of thinking. "Maybe, you are right."

Brenda nodded. "A little TLC goes a long way."

Jerry smiled. "I'll ask Amelia to fix her something."

Brenda cleared her throat. "A little personal delivery service could not hurt either."

Jerry was silent for a moment and then stood up from the table. "Personal delivery, huh? We will see about this." He then walked into the kitchen.

Jax sat stunned at the conversation which had just unfolded in front of him. "Would you like to tell me what just happened here?"

Brenda smirked. "Your brother is beginning the first steps of old-fashioned courting."

"What is going on?"

Brenda laughed. "See what happens when you are the captain of industry, you miss all the escapades. Jerry finally admitted his feelings for Julia to himself and when he tried to tell her, she ran for the hills. We decided that romantic overtures are needed. I volunteered your consulting services on the romance issues."

Jax's eyes widened. "Back up. Are you telling me that my brother, Jeremiah Jacks, has actually admitted that he has feelings for Julia?"

Brenda patted Jax's hand. "Honey, what do you think I have been telling you for the past six months? Your mother too. At least your brother finally admits it."

Jax started laughing. "And you expect him to come to me for romantic advice?"

Brenda covered Jax's mouth with her hand. "Shhh, he will hear you. It took him this long to get to this point, I don't want him regressing now."

Jax finally controlled his mirth. "He actually said he loved her?"

Brenda shook her head. "We did not have that miracle yet but he did not deny it and that is good enough for now. He is traveling in uncharted waters now and he needs your help. Julia is going to make him work for everything."

Jax started laughing again and Brenda rolled her eyes. "This is going to be worth the price of admission."

Meanwhile Amelia had fixed a tray for Julia and Jerry carried it upstairs. He knocked on Julia's door and she told him to come in.

Julia looked surprised at the identity of her visitor. She stammered. "Jerry."

Jerry casually walked over to the bed and put the tray next to her. "I brought you something to eat. You are not going to feel any better without any food in your system."

"I am not hungry."

"It does not matter, you still need to eat. There is some gazpacho and crackers so you don't have to worry about it getting cold."

Julia had a hard time meeting Jerry's gaze. "Thank you. Jerry, I need to talk to you about last night."

"There is no need. You made your position perfectly clear. Don't give it another thought."

Julia gave him a confused look. "As long as you understand."

"I do understand. Now I think what you need is a nice warm bath. Mum suffers from migraines and the bathtub does her a world of good."

"Jerry, this is not necessary."

"Who said anything about it being necessary? Eat your lunch while I run you a bath and then spend some time relaxing in the tub. You will feel much better this evening."

Jerry then walked into the bathroom and Julia heard the bath water running. She was trying to decide if she had a fever and was hallucinating when she heard his voice again. "I don't hear you eating. This water will be cold if you don't start consuming that soup now."

Involuntarily, Julia picked up the soup spoon and started eating. When she had finished, Jerry came out of the bathroom. "Your bath is ready. I even put in some of those bath crystals which were in the cabinet. Now, do you need help getting out of bed?"

Julia stared at him. "No, I can handle that myself."

"Fine, then I will take this tray so you can start relaxing in the tub. You know how to reach us if you need anything. I hope you feel better soon, Jillian misses you."

Jerry left the room and Julia fell back into her pillows. She felt like she was in the twilight zone. Maybe she was dying and Jerry was just being nice to her as a last act. After last night, she thought he would berate her or refuse to speak to her and here he was acting as her nursemaid. She decided she must really be sick because nothing made sense whatsoever.

In the hallway, Jerry was smirking as he walked toward the staircase. This low-keyed, no pressure, courting idea of Brenda's may just work. He knew that Julia was caught completely off guard by his actions. If he could keep this up, her defenses would be down and he could just sweep her off her feet before she even realized what was happening. Yes, things were beginning to look brighter.

Chalet in Cortina d'Ampezzo -- 10:00pm

Julia had indeed felt better after her bath and lunch. Brenda and Jillian had spent some time with her during the late afternoon and Julia was surprised, albeit pleasantly, that Brenda did not even mention Jerry or ask anything about the previous night. Julia silently thanked Jerry for having the good sense not to involve Brenda in their situation. There was nothing to tell anyway. She and Jerry had only gotten caught up in the moment and Julia knew there could never be any real relationship between them. It would never work and Jerry was not interested in any emotional attachments, only physical ones. He already seemed to have forgotten about last night providing Julia with further evidence that there could never be anything between them.

Julia had come downstairs for dinner and Jerry had been perfectly cordial. Brenda had to kick Jax in the shin when he started to laugh as Jerry pulled out Julia's chair for her. Julia, herself, almost had fallen on the floor when he had done so but Jerry showed no response to her reaction. After dinner, Julia had gone back upstairs. A short time later, Jerry knocked on her door and brought her a copy of the latest Jim Brickman CD. He told Julia that he knew how much she liked the music and he figured it would help relax her this evening so she could get a good night sleep. After he left the room, Julia put her pillow over her head in hopes of returning to the sanity of her dreams. Reality was getting too strange for words.

Jerry had gone into his room to do some work and Brenda had put Jillian to bed while Jax put some more logs in the fireplace in the bedroom. Brenda then came into the bedroom and sat down in front of the fire, leaning against the sofa. She put a pillow from the sofa on her lap and stretched her legs out. Jax sat down beside her and then laid down resting his head on the pillow in her lap.

Brenda caressed Jax's cheek with her hand. "You look tired, baby. I'm sorry you had so much to deal with today with the labor problems in Melbourne. This was supposed to be a time for you to get some much needed rest and relaxation."

Jax softly kissed her hand. "The only thing I am sorry about is missing out on spending time with you and the baby. You're everything I need, you're everything I want."

Brenda smiled. "You always know exactly what to say to me to make me feel as if I am the most loved and most precious thing on this Earth."

"You are. I treasure you, Brenda."

"Do you know that you are the most romantic man in this world?"

Jax grinned. "So all the women tell me."

Brenda shook her head at him. "I really don't think I want to hear this."

"Sure you do. Let's see there was Ingrid in Munich and Pilar in Lima and Mai Ling in Tokyo."

Brenda jabbed Jax in the stomach. "That's quite enough, mister. I have no interest in the previous women in your life."

Jax laughed. "You have to hear what Gretchen from Copenhagen used to say about me."

Brenda grabbed the pillow from under Jax's head causing his head to jerk as it fell back into her lap. "I'll show you how much I want to hear about Gretchen from Copenhagen." Brenda swatted him with the pillow. "And Ingrid from Munich." She hit him again. "And Pilar from Lima." Brenda whacked him again as Jax sat up. "And finally Mai Ling from Tokyo." Again, Brenda swatted Jax with the pillow.

Jax grabbed Brenda's arms, preventing her from pummeling him any longer. "Does this mean you really don't want to hear about how romantic these women thought I was?"

Brenda groaned and Jax just laughed as she tried to free herself from his arms. "Stop it!"

Jax eased Brenda onto the blanket beneath them as he released her arms and gazed intently at her. "Mrs. Jacks, there have never been any Gretchens, Ingrids, Pilars, nor Mai Lings in my life. Whatever women were in my past have all been erased from my memories. You are the only woman in my heart and in my mind and in my soul."

Brenda was lost in the sapphire blue eyes staring down at her. "I think I am going to need some convincing, Mr. Jacks."

Jax smiled. "I think I can handle that."

Jax laid down on the blanket beside Brenda and began tenderly stroking her face with his thumb. He then kissed her forehead, then her eyelids and then her nose. He kissed each of her cheeks and then her chin before his lips moved to the area behind her right ear. Jax dropped baby kisses down Brenda's ear lobe and then outlined her ear with the tip of his tongue. Brenda closed her eyes as his mouth gently sucked her ear lobe. Jax then followed the same pattern for her left ear.

Brenda ran her tongue over her lips as the fire inside her ignited. Her lips yearned to drink in the taste of his lips. Jax purposely avoided her mouth as he next began to leave a trail of kisses from one shoulder to the other. His warm wet lips then moved to the base of her throat and he felt her body tremble beneath him. Brenda moaned as she wrapped her arms around Jax's neck. Her hands moved to the back of his head and she pulled his mouth to hers. Their kisses were hard and smoldering and Brenda moaned into his mouth as Jax's tongue fully explored her.

As their mouths remained drawn together like magnets, Jax's fingers unbuttoned Brenda's satin nightshirt. His hands then caressed her stomach before moving up to the softness of her chest. Jax shuddered himself as her body responded to him. Their lips finally broke apart and Jax lowered his head to fully savor the taste of her. She groaned as Jax fully explored the velvety feel of her skin. Thereafter, his tongue moved down her stomach until it reached her navel which Jax fully explored as well.

The flames between them became even more smoldering as clothes were removed. Their mouths met again as he eased on top of her. Brenda closed her eyes as he began to fulfill the need burning inside her. Brenda ran her hands through his golden locks as she gently rocked her hips increasing the bliss they were giving to one another. Brenda felt the intensity of Jax's love for her and her rapid breathing confirmed her own battle for control. She pulled his lips to hers again and hungrily kissed him. Her tongue traced the inside of his lips. She wrapped her legs tightly around Jax's waist and shifted her hips begging him to quench the fire raging inside her.

Brenda gazed fully into Jax's eyes and saw the desire raging behind them. She whispered words of love to him and Jax could no longer control his own passions. His strong, muscular arms moved beside her as their bodies joined in a glorious display of love. Their movements were passionate and harmonious as they began their trip to paradise. Brenda's moans of ecstasy fueled his ardor. Their bodies responded to each other with perfectly synchronized actions further inciting the fires of their passions. They murmured each other's names as their hearts soared and paradise was found.

After their trip to paradise, Brenda rested in his arms. As always after their lovemaking, Jax kissed Brenda tenderly and told her how much he loved her. She began to doze off and Jax lifted Brenda into his arms and tucked her under the covers of the huge canopy bed. He settled into bed beside her and cradled her in his arms. The feel and sound of her beating heart against his chest made his own heart sing. She was the only woman who existed in the world to him. Brenda then snuggled deeper into the warmth of his loving embrace. As she drifted off to sleep, Brenda whispered, "I love you forever." Jax smiled as Brenda's breathing deepened, signaling her entrance into dream land. When he fell asleep a few minutes later, the moonbeams were radiating through the bedroom windows. The reflections accentuated the loving couple asleep in each other's arms and shone brightly on the union of their hands over Brenda's heart.

Kanga's Kradle -- 1:30pm

Brenda hung up the phone and then rested her head on the papers spread all over the desk. The phone had not stopped ringing since she had arrived more than five hours earlier and it was going to get worse. A press conference was scheduled for next week to discuss the status of the housing facility renovation. The grant applications for the next fiscal year were due next week as well. In addition, The Idle Rich had a performance scheduled at The Outback the week thereafter so Brenda was juggling both business ventures now. Justus had been a godsend in connection with the grant application process.

Things had been crazy for both Jax and Brenda since they had returned from Cortina the previous weekend. Another issue had developed in the labor crisis with the mines so Jax had to fly to Melbourne on Monday and had just returned to Port Charles last night. Jillian was cutting her first tooth and was more fussy than usual, keeping Brenda awake most of last night. Their days in Cortina already seemed like they had been months ago rather than days ago.

Brenda did have to smile to herself when she thought about Jerry though. His behavior was amusing her and completely perplexing Julia. He and Julia had not spoken at all again about what had happened in Cortina that night. They had spent the last few days in Cortina without any arguments or altercations. Jerry had given her space but still always had made sure she knew he was around. Julia had watched him decline each of the numerous invitations he received at the ski lodge for evenings of drinks, dinner and dancing.

There was a knock at Brenda's door and she lifted her head and told Gina to come in. Gina Cates was one of the college interns working with Kanga's Kradle as part of PCU's social work program.

"I'm sorry to interrupt but here are some of the materials which Mrs. Hardy just sent over for you. She said you requested them to prepare for the press conference next week."

Brenda took a deep breath at the mass of documents Gina handed to her. "Thank you Gina. I can see what I will be doing for the next few weeks. It is a shame I only have a few days."

Gina smiled. "I will do whatever I can to help you. Can I get you some lunch? You have been here since before 8:00am and have not eaten anything. "

Brenda began rummaging through the papers on her desk. "No thanks, I do not have the time this afternoon."

"Let me know if you need anything. You have provided me with a terrific opportunity here. I can't thank you enough for that."

Brenda looked up and smiled. "You are quite welcome. I am still waiting for the latest cost projections from the construction manager. He promised to fax the numbers to me this afternoon."

Gina backed up toward the door. "I will go check the fax machine. I will bring them to you once they arrive."

"Thank you."

Gina walked out of the office and Brenda rested her head back down on the desk. If she could she get ten minutes of peace, she would be rejuvenated for the series of meetings she had later this afternoon and this evening. After a moment, there was another knock at the door.

She did not look up figuring Gina was bringing in the cost projections. "Come in."

Brenda sensed his presence before she lifted her head from the desk. As she raised her head, a brown paper bag was placed on the desk.

"I see I got here just in time."

Brenda shook her head at Jax. "In time for what?"

"To save you from not taking care of yourself."

"You have spoiled me in that regard since you take such good care of me."

"That is because you are too stubborn at times to realize you are running yourself into the ground. You are working three jobs, raising a daughter and taking care of your husband. What are you averaging this week for sleep -- maybe four hours a night?"

Brenda smiled at him. "Honey, I am fine. You are in no better position than I am about sleep this week. You traveled half way around the globe, remember?"

Jax put up his hand. "Don't try to turn this around about me, Mrs. Jacks. You are going to sit here and eat some of this food before you collapse. I asked Gina to hold your calls for the next thirty minutes."

Brenda rolled her eyes. "I knew there was a reason I should not have set up this office on the same floor as yours. Now, you will be always worrying about me and acting like a Mother Hen."

Jax laughed as he opened up the paper bag. "What do you think you were doing when I found you lying on the floor of the nursery at 4:00 this morning."

"Jillian was not sleeping and there was no reason for both of us to be awake. You had just come back from Melbourne and .." Brenda's statement was cut off in mid-sentence as a set of chopsticks holding a piece of sweet and sour chicken reached her mouth.

As Jax fed her the chicken, Brenda started to protest but he stopped her. "Sweetie, it is not polite to talk with your mouth full." Jax made sure her mouth remained full as he alternated between feeding her the chicken and the vegetable fried rice.

After a few minutes, Jax finally gave Brenda a break from the feast. They moved to the leather sofa next to her desk and Brenda sat in Jax's lap. She took the set of chopsticks from Jax and then picked up a piece of chicken and began feeding him.

Brenda smiled and stroked his cheek. "Thank you for loving me so much and worrying about me and taking care of me."

Jax's eyes gazed lovingly at her. "We take care of each other, Brenda. That is what love and marriage are all about."

Brenda put the carton of rice on the table in front of the sofa and then rested her head on Jax's shoulder. Jax gently massaged her back and then kissed the top of her head. "Sweetie, rest your eyes for a few minutes."

Brenda snuggled closer to him. "Okay, but just for a few minutes."

Jax took a deep breath and slowly inhaled the scent of vanilla from Brenda's hair. There was nothing better in the world than the feel of her in his arms. There were times when she was away from him that he felt like part of his arms were missing because she wasn't in them. Brenda completed him, yet even when they were apart, she was there with him in some way. She was in his heart and soul now and nothing could ever change that. Jax smiled as Brenda then took his hand and placed it over her heart as if to reply to his thoughts that he would always be in her heart and soul as well. It was like that with them now, so easily reading each other's thoughts and needs. They did not know where one stopped and where the other began. Their love was like a circle -- no starting point or ending point -- it was simply continuous.

J & J Jacks -- 3:30pm

The next phase of the Canadian Timber deal had been occupying most of Jerry and Julia's time since they had returned from Cortina. More problems were developing every day in connection with union issues and tax concerns. Julia and Andrew Burns were working on the tax problems and Jerry and Scott were focusing on the union concerns. Jerry had lost his temper the day before with the union lawyer and Scott now was trying to mend fences.

Jerry slammed the phone down as Julia stood at the open door to his office. "Is it safe to come in?"

"Probably not but come in anyway."

"I take it things are no better today with Riggs?"

"Can I tell you how much I hate unions? They have to be the worst thing ever created."

Julia laughed. "Let me guess -- you have a great appreciation for sweatshops?"

Jerry nodded. "Of course, sweatshops and dictatorships -- those are something to strive for."

"Too bad you were born a century too late."

Jerry finally flashed Julia a small smile. "Damn shame about that so now I have to deal with these idiots. Forgetting that nightmare for a moment, what can I do for you?"

"I wanted to give you the latest forecasts on the tax liability. The IRS is going to be thrilled."

Jerry sighed. "Perfect. Between the Feds and Riggs, this deal is has become a royal pain in the ass."

"We are still working on a few different angles and Andrew has come up with an idea he is checking on right now."

"Yes, he spoke to me about it earlier. The kid may actually have something there. He just may come through on all this."

Julia's eyes widened at Jerry's remark. "Excuse me, but did I hear you correctly? Is that actually a compliment on Andrew's efforts?"

Jerry thought to himself that he had no problem with the kid since Julia did not seem to be interested in Andrew beyond a working relationship. Jerry waved his hand in the air. "So, I was wrong about the kid. Let's just say that I am making an effort to view things more clearly now." Jerry stared intently at her. "It has caused me to change my opinions and feelings about lots of things, including some of the people around me."

Julia lowered her eyes to avoid his gaze. She swallowed hard and then attempted to change the subject. "Well...how is Francesca feeling?"

Jerry smiled to himself at her stammering. "Scott tells me she was much better when he stopped by to see her this morning. She will be in a soft cast for a few weeks but she expects to be back to work next week."

"I am glad. She is lucky she was not more seriously hurt in the accident."

"You are right. Scott seems to be taking very good care of her though."

"It sounds like things are getting serious between them."

Jerry leaned back in his chair. "Yes, they appear to be. I am just glad that Francesca is happy."

Julia was pleasantly surprised at the sincerity of Jerry's remark. "She is a wonderful woman and seems to bring out the best in Scott."

Jerry looked directly at Julia. "They bring out the best in each other. I guess even office romances can work if the couple was meant to be together."

Julia felt her breath catch in her throat as Jerry looked at her. Damn those eyes. They were so captivating. Why did it seem that every conversation they had over the past week somehow seem to involve their relationship? No, she told herself, there was no relationship. She had to get away from him.

Julia quickly stood up from the chair. "Oh, I have a conference call in a few minutes I have to get ready for. Just tell Andrew what you think about those tax projections. I will see you later."

As she quickly left his office, Jerry leaned back in his chair again. He smiled as he thought that this little exercise was driving Julia nuts. It seemed to be working but patience was not exactly his strong suite. He had freely admitted to himself that like it or not, Julia Barrett had gotten to him like no woman ever had. She was as obstinate and strong-willed as he was so he knew what he was up against. It was not going to be easy, but he was going to convince her one way or the other that they belonged together. In the meantime, the challenge of the game was quite entertaining.

The Jacks Residence -- 9:00pm

Jax had just put Jillian to bed and was throwing a few logs on the fire when Jerry entered the den.

"Are you sure those big logs aren't too heavy for you, little brother? We wouldn't want you to strain yourself before Saturday."

Jax stood up and turned toward Jerry. "I would think that me throwing my back out would be just what you wanted. It would be the only way you would have a chance to beat me in the tournament."

"Get real, Jax. I am going to mop up the racquetball court with your sorry ass on Saturday."

"Live in your fantasy land for now, Jerry. Come Saturday, reality will be here and they will be taking you out on a stretcher. Face it, those muscles just aren't what those used to be. It must be terrible to be old."

"We will see on Saturday, mister. You are the old, settled down married man here. I think you are the one getting soft. That stamina is gone."

Jax slapped Jerry on the back. "Trust me old man, the stamina is not gone."

"I guess I will just have to check with Brenda about that fact."

Jax sat on the couch and laughed. "Go right ahead."

Jerry poured himself a brandy. "Speaking of my poor sister-in-law, have you heard from her?"

"Yes, she should be home soon. The Board Meeting was expected to be over by 9:00pm."

"I hope she is not stretching herself too thin these days."

"I have thought the same thing. I have discussed it with her and she is so committed to everything right now, there is no alternative. She is happy and that is all I want but I can't help worrying about her."

Jerry sat down in the leather chair next to the sofa. "She is one determined woman, Jax."

"That she is and also a very stubborn woman at times."

"It must run in the family."

Jax smiled. "So how are things with Julia these days?"

Jerry took a sip of his brandy. "Slowly progressing. I just hope I don't lose my mind before this is all over. She is so damned bullheaded."

"You'll make the perfect couple then."

"What is it with these Barrett women? Is their sole goal in life to drive others completely nuts?"

"I am sure they could say the same thing about the Jacks men."

"Well, if Brenda could be convinced that you two were meant to be together then Julia can be convinced about me. It will probably kill me first but she will be convinced."

Jax grinned. "If she can put up with you, then she is an even better woman than I already consider her."

"Thank you so much for the encouragement. It is a good thing I have my support system from my sister-in-law, you are useless."

"Between your arrogance and Brenda's tenacity, look out Julia."

"If I did not know it before I know it now, that wife of yours is something else. Do you know that she had the gall yesterday to tell me that I have never had a romantic thought in my mind? The way she talks about you, it is pathetic at times. In her eyes, the art of romance only began once you were on this Earth. Please. You really have her snowed."

Jax felt a surge of love run through him as he heard Jerry talk about Brenda's feelings. He smiled sheepishly and shrugged. "What can I say?"

Jerry rolled his eyes. "Nothing I want to hear, Romeo. I am sick of hearing about you. Romance like everything else is in the eye of the beholder so I will get along just fine."

"Poor Julia. I will send a sympathy card to her."

"That is enough from you, little Jasper."

Before Jax could respond, they heard the front door open.

He looked at Jerry. "You will pay for that remark on the court on Saturday."

Jax stood up as Brenda walked into the den. "Am I interrupting a bonding moment?"

Jax kissed Brenda softly on the lips and took her hand and led her to the couch. "No, Jerry is having delusions again about Saturday."

Brenda sat in Jax's lap and outlined his jawline with her finger. "Sorry Jerry but Jillian and I will be there cheering for Jax. Better luck next year in the tournament."

Jax laughed. "Yes, you will be in the senior division then."

Jerry shook his head. "Since I see you both are ganging up on me and also making goo-goo eyes at each other, this is my cue to say good night."

"You are just jealous, brother."

"Good night Jerry. See you at breakfast."

Jerry left the den as Brenda rested her head on Jax's shoulder. "Did everything go as expected?"

Brenda closed here eyes. "Yes, things could not be better. We are moving along just as planned. I could not be happier."

Jax smiled. "I am glad. Just promise me you will try to remember to take care of yourself. You are exhausted, sweetie."

"I promise. How is the baby?"

"She was a perfect little angel this evening for her Daddy. She is peacefully sleeping now. I think you should follow suit."

Brenda lifted her head and gazed at Jax. "I am going to go up and check on her and then take care of myself just like I promised. I will need your help though."

Jax raised his eyebrow. "I am always at your service, Mrs. Jacks. What can I do for you?"

Brenda stroked his cheek. "Come to bed with me so I can fall asleep in your arms."

Jax ran his fingers through her hair. "It would be my extreme pleasure."

They got up from the couch and walked arm and arm up the stairs to check on their little miracle and then spend the night in each other's arms. Life was good.

L&B Records -- Noon

Lois and Brenda were both on the phone making last minute arrangements for tonight's Eddie Maine and the Idle Rich concert at The Outback. There were flyers and other promotional materials strewn all across the room. The Outback was being used to launch the next tour which would begin next week. Justus was slowly taking over more control of ELQ so Ned was taking a three week leave of absence for the East Coast tour. Edward was not happy but Ned did not care. The boundaries had been drawn once Lois had moved back to Port Charles and Edward knew they could not be crossed.

Brenda put down the receiver and jotted down some notes. Lois then finished her conversation with the travel agent about the accommodations for the tour. She and Brooke were traveling with the band and Gloria was joining them to take care of Brooke when necessary. Brenda was staying behind to make all the arrangements for the recording of the new album which would start after the tour finished.

Brenda looked up from her notes and smiled at Lois. "Lo, you look a little excited there."

Lois took a deep breath and her baby blue eyes sparkled. "Sometimes I have to pinch myself to prove that this is real. I never thought I would be a tour groupie again. I never thought I would have my Eddie back again."

Brenda walked over to Lois and hugged her. "I am so happy for you both. I can't believe how incredible everything is right now for my friends and family. Robin is well, you and Ned are together and now the news about Lucy and Kevin."

"It is about time for those two, they have been together for so long and have been through so much together."

Brenda nodded. "They have paid their dues. I have always thought they were so perfect for each other since they complement each other so well."

"Tonight is going to be twice as much fun now -- the start of the tour and Kevin and Lucy's engagement party."

"It will be exciting. One of these days I hope we will be celebrating another engagement party."

Lois shook her head. "Girlfriend, I think you are jumping the gun a little there. I think you need your sister to agree to go out on a date with Jerry before there will be any engagement parties."

Brenda sighed. "I know but a girl can dream, can't she?"

Jillian started fussing in the playpen and Brenda walked over to give her another toy. "Here is your bunny, sweetheart." Jillian immediately began sucking on the ears of the plush toy.

Lois smiled at the baby. "Getting another tooth, angel?"

"Tell Aunt Lois that we think so."

Lois looked at her watch. "Well, we better think about getting out of here. The sound check is in two hours."

"Maggie will be at the house at 1:00pm so why don't we start getting the kids together and head over. Jax set up the porta-crib for Brooke this morning."

Lois started throwing some of the flyers and other promotional materials into her bag. "You are very fortunate to have Maggie. Jillian seems so comfortable with her and Brooke loves her as well."

"I thank Simone every day for recommending Maggie to us. She is so flexible which is a godsend with our schedules these days. Today is a perfect example since she changed her hours so she could stay until we get back after the show."

Lois picked up Brooke from the playpen. "And she agreed to watch Brooke as well."

Toys, diaper bags, promotional materials, notebooks were grabbed as the L&B ladies prepared for their departure. Both Lois and Brenda looked like the energizer bunnies and Brooke and Jillian simply stared at the cyclones before them.

Brenda took a deep breath. "Are we ready?"

Lois was beaming. "Are we ever. Let's get this show on the road."

They were then off to start the latest chapter for L&B Records. As Jax so often said when the forces known as Lois and Brenda were together, "Look out world, here they come."

J & J Jacks -- 5:00pm

Jerry, Julia and Scott were in the conference room discussing Canadian Timber when Jax popped his head into the room.

"I am heading home to change and spend a little time with Jillian before heading over to The Outback. I will see you all there later."

Jerry looked up from his paperwork. "How is Brenda? Is she still operating at warp speed?"

Jax laughed. "When does Brenda not operate at warp speed?"

Scott chuckled. "The only person who can top her in that area is Lucy. When the two of them are in a room together, it is scary. Ever since the engagement was announced last weekend, Lucy has been at an all-time frenzy."

Jax grinned. "I am sure Lucy is with Brenda right now ensuring everything is perfect for the party. If I were Mac, I would have called in sick today."

Julia shook her head. "Listen to the three of you. You just don't understand women."

Jerry chuckled. "And the problem with that is what?"

Julia rolled her eyes. "You are hopeless."

Jax waved. "On that note, I will say my good-byes. See you all later."

Scott, Julia and Jerry finished their meeting and Scott headed back to his office. Jerry gathered his files. "So, Lucy and Kevin are taking the plunge? Another one bites the dust."

Julia glared at him. "Why would you say that? They happen to be in love and very happy with each other."

"That seems to be a strange comment coming from you, Ms. Barrett. Didn't you just say something last week about marriage and commitment not being viable options for most people? Or were you only talking about yourself?"

"Why do you keep bringing that up?"

Jerry stood up from the conference table and picked up his files. "Why do you get so defensive on the subject? You were the one that said it. Me thinks the lady doth protest too much. Down deep, you are no different than Lucy."

"What is that supposed to mean?"

"You would be acting the same way. Maybe Lucy's way of showing her happiness is different than yours but you would be just as ecstatic if you were in her shoes."

Julia waved her hand in the air. "You are ridiculous. You have no idea what you are talking about. How dare you tell me what I think and how I feel."

"Sorry but the truth hurts. You are not fooling anyone, Ms. Barrett."

Jerry walked out the conference room door as Julia continued to sit at the table. She was angry but not really at Jerry, she was angry at herself. When Brenda had told her about Lucy and Kevin over the weekend, Julia could not help but feel a little sorry for herself. She knew it was wrong but she was envious of Lucy. Everyone around her was happy and seemed to have found their soulmates and here she was alone. Brenda had made a comment to her yesterday as they discussed Lucy's engagement and Julia could not get the words out of her head. "If you are unhappy then do something to make yourself happy. The choice is yours." Julia shook her head in an effort to stop the words from ringing in her ears. She could not think about that now. It was too complicated.

Meanwhile, Jerry was back in his office. He knew he had pushed Julia but some days his patience was almost non-existent and today was one of those days. It was time for some action. An idea popped into his head and he quickly left the office to put his plan in motion.

An hour later, Julia picked up her coat and walked out of her office. She met Jerry in the main area of the office. He saw her and walked over to her.

"Julia, I am sorry about what I said before. You have every right to your feelings on the subject and I should not have brought it up. I won't broach the topic again."

"Jerry, I probably flew off the handle...."

Jerry interrupted her. "No, you did no such thing. I had no right to tell you how you feel, only you know that. I apologize."

"Forget it. I am going home to change. I am running late already."

"Let me help you with your coat."

Jerry took her coat and put it on for her. As he did, he casually ran his hands down the back of her arms. He smiled as he felt her body tremble at his touch. Just as quickly as his hands were on her arms, they were off. He told her good-bye and walked back to his office. Julia caught her breath and walked to the elevator, thankful to get away.

Jerry sat behind his desk waiting and ten minutes later, he stood up and slowly put on his coat. He heard the main office door open and innocently walked into the main foyer.

"Julia, I thought you went home."

"My damn car won't start and the battery in my car phone is dead so I had to come up here to call a tow truck."

Jerry looked at his watch. "Look at the time, you are going to be late."

"I know but I really don't have a choice."

"Why don't I drive you home and wait while you change and then we will go to The Outback together?"

"That is not necessary."

"It is not a problem. I'll take you home after the show and then pick you up in the morning and bring you here. Maybe we can figure out what is the matter with the car then. If not, you can call a town truck then."

"I don't know, Jerry."

"If you are late then Brenda will be disappointed. Then of course there is Lucy and Kevin as well."

"Fine, let's go before we both are late."

Jerry opened the main office door for her, "After you."

Julia walked out oblivious to the cheshire grin on Jerry's face. Sometimes a little scheming went a long way.

The Outback --- 8:00pm

It seemed as if the entire town was in attendance this evening. Scott had made an exception to Serena's regular bedtime this evening and she was sitting at a table with him, Francesca, Gail and Lee. Lucy and Kevin were mingling amongst the crowd. Brenda and Lois were seeing to the last minute details for the show and Ned was in the back with the band. The Cassidines and the Spencers were in attendance along with most of the hospital staff. Mac and Felicia were running around making sure that everyone was being attended to by the restaurant staff.

The Quartermaines were all sitting together at the table closest to the stage. Jax walked to over the table to say hello. Edward sat there with his arms crossed and a frown etched on his face. Lila turned around and looked at him. "Edward, you would not want your face to freeze like that. Smile. This is a party not a wake."

"It most certainly is a wake. The end of my grandson's corporate career for a return to this mess."

Lila shook her head. "Put as sock in it, Edward. Ned is not leaving ELQ and you know it. He is just doing what he loves. Leave him be."

Jax laughed. "That is telling him, Lila. I am glad to see the old coot does not run the show in your house."

Edward shook his finger at Jax. "Stay out of this you snake. I only put up with you for Brenda's sake and I pray every day she gets the good sense to grab that baby and run for the hills. I would personally help her take you to the cleaners in a divorce settlement."

Monica spoke up. "Sorry Jax, Edward did not take his daily dose of good manners and hospitable behavior today."

Alan shook his head. "Don't worry, Jax, he is just repeating what everyone used to say to him about my mother."

Edward threw out his hands. "Why do I even call you all family anymore? You are selling me out to this shark."

Jax smiled. "I would just say they have impeccable taste."

Justus laughed and Edward scowled at him. "You all should be ashamed of yourselves."

Brenda walked up to the table then and put her arm around Jax. "Good evening everyone. Is everyone enjoying themselves thus far?"

Emily grinned. "Everyone but Grandfather here."

A.J. laughed. "Grandfather seems to only be happy when he is making everyone else miserable and we are all immune to him now so I think that frown is a permanent fixture."

Brenda took her hand and brushed Edward's cheek. "That is a shame since you have such a handsome face. A smile on it would just make you so much more irresistible to all the ladies in the room."

Edward involuntarily smiled at Brenda's actions. The entire group at the table laughed. Alan spoke up. "Some things never change. Father is still a sucker for the charm of a beautiful woman."

Justus grinned. "Better watch out, Jax. Edward may be trying to steal Brenda away."

Jax smiled. "You may be right so I guess we better be moving along. Have a good evening everyone."

Jax and Brenda walked toward their table and Brenda looked around. "Where is Julia? She should have been here a half an hour ago. Jerry is not here either."

"When I left the office, they said they would see me here."

Brenda looked up and saw Jerry and Julia coming through the door. They waved at her and Brenda smiled. "Well, this could be interesting."

Jerry and Julia walked over to the table and everyone sat down. Brenda smiled to herself as Jerry helped Julia off with her coat and pulled out her chair for her. "What happened to you two? I was getting worried."

Julia sighed. "My car would not start when I left the office so Jerry had to drive me home to change and then we stopped at your house so he could change and then we came here."

Jax took a sip of his drink. "Do you know what is wrong with the car? Did you call a tow truck?"

"No, Jerry offered to drive me here tonight and to the office in the morning so I did not call one. Jerry said he would look at the car in the morning to see if he could fix it before I call for a two truck."

Jax eyed Jerry suspiciously. "How nice of him."

"How were the girls when you were there?"

Julia smiled. "Adorable as usual. Maggie was getting ready to give Jillian a bath and Brooke had already had hers."

Jerry spoke up. "Would you ladies like something from the bar?"

Julia nodded. "A glass of white wine please."

Brenda shook her head. "I'm fine."

"Jax?"

"I will join you."

Jax and Jerry walked to the bar and placed their order with Brian. Jax lowered his voice. "So, Julia's car would not start?"

"That's right."

"That is strange. The car is less than six months old. I wonder what the problem is."

"I can't imagine."

"I bet. What is going on?"

Jerry gave Jax a shocked look. "What do you mean?"

Jax chuckled. "I know you and I know you are up to something. Spill it"

"So I clipped the battery wire. No harm. I will fix it tomorrow."

Jax shook his head. "Please tell me that this was not Brenda's idea."

"No, it was not. Why would you think so?"

"Because it sounds just like something she would do. I fear that one day the two of you will put your heads together and all hell will break loose."

Brian handed Jax and Jerry their drinks. "Don't worry about it, Jax. I have everything under control."

They started walking back to the table and Jax muttered to himself. "That is what I am afraid of."

Lois joined the table and Lucy and Kevin stopped by to talk to everyone.

"Congratulations Lucy and Kevin. I know you will be very happy."

"Thanks Lois. Doc and I are very excited."

Jax patted Kevin on the back. "When is the big day?"

"We are still deciding but we are looking at mid to late May."

Julia smiled. "That is wonderful."

Jerry raised his glass. "Congrats to both of you."

Brenda looked at her watch and saw that is was just about show time. "Well, it is time for our entertainment."

Kevin took Lucy by the hand to lead her back to their table. "We will see you all later then."

Brenda took the stage and announced the start of the show and the band appeared. Eddie then ran on stage and slid across it on his knees. Cheers rang out and the show started. Applause and cheering sounded throughout the show. Lois was beaming and Brenda was dancing in her seat to the music. The final number was dedicated to Lucy and Kevin. As the show ended, Eddie and the band were greeted with a standing ovation. The start of the tour was a smashing success as anticipated. The press was in attendance so the reviews would be seen throughout the regional newspapers in the morning.

After the performance, Ned joined the crowd. Lois kissed him and then Brenda hugged him. Kevin and Lucy thanked him for the dedication and asked him if he would sing at their wedding. Ned happily agreed to their request. Ned and Lois then walked over to the Quartermaine table.

"Good show Ned. I still love those leather pants."

"Thanks Grandmother."

Edward frowned. "Lila, I think you need to get your eyes checked."

Ned smiled. "I see we are no better mood, Grandfather."

Edward grunted and Justus shook his head. "He really loved it Ned. We all saw his foot tapping to the beat of the music throughout the entire show."

"That is enough from all of you. I think it is time to go home."

Lila nodded. "Yes, we have to get sourpuss to bed for the night. Good night all."

The crowd slowly began to disperse for the evening. Serena gave Lucy and Kevin kisses before going home to bed. The Cassidines bid their farewells and the Hardys and Spencers also gave Lucy and Kevin their best wishes. Brenda and Lois were helping tear down some of the equipment while Ned and Jax were helping to load up the van. Jerry and Julia said their good-byes to everyone and Brenda watched as Jerry helped Julia with her coat. After Brenda waved good-bye to Julia and Jerry, Julia turned to the door and Brenda gave Jerry a thumbs up sign. Jax walked into the club at that moment and simply shook his head at Jerry and Brenda's silent communication.

Ned, Lois, Jax and Brenda prepared to leave. Brenda hugged both Lois and Ned again. Jax could not help smiling at her exuberance.

Jax puts his hands on Brenda's shoulders. "Looks like it was quite a night for L&B Records. Congratulations ladies."

Lois smiled. "Thank you very much."

Brenda laced her fingers through his. "We can't forget Eddie here as well."

Jax extended his hand to Ned. "No, of course not. Good luck with the tour, Ned."

Ned shook his hand. "Thanks Jax but with these two ladies, who needs luck?"

"A very good point, Ned. As I have said before, look out world, here comes Lois and Brenda."

Ned put his arm around Lois. "I could not have said it better myself."

The two couples waved to Mac and Felicia and left ready to face the world together. There would be no stopping them and they knew it would be a great ride along the way.

The Jacks Residence -- 7:30am

Jax had silently slipped out of bed a few minutes before and made the preparations for his surprise. He heard Jillian's coos and then went into the nursery. He turned off the baby monitor and then lifted Jillian from the crib. "Good morning princess. Daddy is going to change you and then we are going to surprise Mommy."

Jax changed the baby and walked into the hall ready to sneak back into the master suite. "Now see if you can hold this one for a minute without ripping it apart. No, you can't eat it either. I am going to run out of these at this rate."

Jax carried Jillian into the bedroom and slid into bed next to Brenda. Jax whispered to the baby "No" as she tried to tear apart the gift. Brenda stirred and her eyes fluttered open.

Jax held Jillian toward Brenda. "Happy Birthday Mommy! I have a present for you. Jillian give it to Daddy, unclench those fingers, princess. Thank you. Here Mommy."

Brenda held the beautiful pink tulip in her hand and smiled. "Thank you precious."

Brenda put the tulip on the nightstand and Jax handed her the baby. "Your daughter has a thing for ripping the petals off tulips. Either that or wanting to eat them."

Brenda laughed and kissed the baby. "Did you remind Daddy that tulips are your favorite flower as well thanks to that front garden he had designed for you?"

"Daddy remembers but today is Mommy's day and it has to be perfect."

Brenda smiled again. "Kiss me and it will be."

Jax sensually and slowly moved his lips over hers. Brenda moaned as the kissed deepened. Their lips parted and Jax caressed her cheek. "Happy birthday my love."

"Thank you honey."

"Jose is making you a special birthday breakfast so I suggest we go enjoy it."

"Perfect. This little girl needs to eat as well."

Jax took Jillian as Brenda got out of bed and put on her robe.

They walked down the hall and reached the staircase. As Brenda rounded the corner, her eyes met a sea of pink. There were baskets of pink tulips on both sides of each step down the entire staircase. There were also two huge arrangements at the bottom of the stairs in the foyer.

Brenda was beaming. "What did you do, have every tulip from Holland sent here?"

"Close."

Brenda shook her head. "You are unbelievable."

Jax took her hand and they descended the stairs. Brenda looked back as they reached the foyer and the scene was even more beautiful from this vantage point. The staircase almost looked like a waterfall of pink tulips. It was spectacular.

Jax opened the front door so Jillian could partake of her morning ritual of waving and cooing at the swans in the front fountain. The spring weather was finally here so Brenda's Valentine's Day gifts were outside in the fountain rather than in the pond in the greenhouse. Jillian was completely fascinated with them.

Jose served breakfast in the dining room and Jax took turns feeding Jillian and Brenda. Brenda seemed to be enjoying her belgian waffles dripping with strawberries and whipped cream much more than Jillian was enjoying her rice cereal and applesauce.

Jax kissed Brenda removing the final taste of strawberries and whipped cream from her lips. "Remember to be sure your schedule stays clear for our plans for this afternoon and evening."

"I don't know our plans for this afternoon and this evening."

Jax shook his head. "It's your birthday surprise, Brenda, so it is supposed to be that way."

"Who says?"

"You are impossible. Just remember you promised to clear your schedule for this afternoon and this evening. You are all mine then."

Brenda grinned and took his hand in hers. "No, I am all yours now and always."

Jax smiled. "I guess I can live with that."

Brenda's lips moved to his for another kiss. As they did she whispered, "Just try not to."

Their lips met Brenda felt like a ray of sunshine was melting her heart. It was going to be a great birthday, she just knew it.

J & J Jacks -- 1:00pm

The union issues had been resolved with Canadian Timber. Jerry and Scott had been at their wits' end with Riggs, the union negotiator, when Julia had asked if she could lend a hand. Surprisingly to both Jax and Julia, Jerry had agreed. After a few days, Julia had been able to work out a compromise agreeable to both parties. The agreement had been executed this morning with the union.

Jerry knocked on the door to Julia's office. She told him to come in and he entered the room. He walked over to her desk and handed her the vase of roses.

"What is all this?"

"I just wanted to thank you for your help with Riggs. You came through when we needed it most. Thank you."

Julia inhaled the fragrance from the flowers. "You are welcome. They are beautiful. Yellow roses are my favorites."

"I know. Brenda told me."

"You asked her?"

"Sure. Why would I want to give you something you did not like? My brother is not the only Jacks who is completely reflective and thoughtful about his gifts."

Julia smiled. "I see."

"Of course, I did not buy the entire world's supply of them. Jax does not believe in the adage that less is more."

Julia laughed. "I heard about the tulips when I called Brenda this morning."

"The house looks like a damn garden show."

Julia laughed again. "I think my sister appreciated it though."

Jerry sighed. "Yes, she did. That gorgeous face of hers was lit up like a Christmas tree all morning. She could have done a commercial for GE light bulbs."

"When I spoke to her, she was a tad excited as she was trying to figure out what her birthday surprise was. Unfortunately our father barely even acknowledged her on her birthday so now her birthdays have special meaning. She is making up for lost time and Jax is seeing to it that she has reason to. Jax is aware of the past, he and I spoke at length about her childhood celebrations or lack thereof."

"My brother would give her the world if her could. I have no idea what Jax is doing but I am sure it will thrill her. Tonight, she will probably be even more radiant than she was this morning."

"It is hard to imagine her being any more beautiful than she already is."

"She is that. The Barrett women certainly add to the radiance of this town. Jillian looks like she inherited the genes as well so there will be a third Barrett beauty in Port Charles."

Julia blushed and Jerry smiled to himself. "Thank you."

"Ms. Barrett, are you blushing? I would think that you would be used to such compliments."

"I am not blushing." Julia's cheeks reddened even more.

Jerry smiled. "Yes, you are. You are really something. You never cease to surprise me."

Julia looked puzzled. "Why do you say that?"

"You are a beautiful, classy, intelligent woman who can tear someone's head off in the board room and yet a moment later be a loving aunt. You are so sure of yourself in the business world yet you seem a bit self-conscious when it comes to your own beauty and value. It is just a little astonishing to me."

Julia sat quietly in her chair for a moment. She was overwhelmed at what Jerry had just said to her. She also realized that her heart was beating a mile a minute. She shook her head. "Now who is the one that is surprised?"

Jerry gazed at her. "Now I am going to ask you why you think that?"

Julia felt herself getting flushed and she stammered. Jerry saw her uneasiness. "Do tell, I told you so it is only fair that you tell me."

Julia took a deep breath. She was not going to let him get to her. "Let's just say your insight amazed me. You are full of contradictions. You are a ruthless, arrogant, stubborn businessman but I also see you with your niece and I saw you when Jax's plane went down."

Jerry laughed. "So you are amazed I have a heart?"

Julia was flustered. "I didn't mean it like that."

"Don't be embarrassed, it was a fair suspicion. Sometimes I wasn't sure about that myself but things have changed. My family and the people I care about have made me see things differently." Jerry looked at her intently. "I know now that I indeed have a heart."

Julia swallowed hard. How in the world did they get on this conversation and how was she going to get out of it?

Jerry saw the confusion in her eyes and decided it was time to add to it. "This has been quite interesting. It seems that we have much more in common than I ever realized. Ruthless in the business world yet we have soft spots for those we love and care about. We both possess the traits of insight and stubbornness and a slight degree of arrogance yet we still are self-conscious in some areas of our lives. What a package."

The intensity between them was incredible. Julia felt like his gaze was burning a whole straight to her soul. She whispered. "I guess there are some similarities."

Jerry quietly spoke. "What do you think that means?"

The intercom buzzed and Julia almost jumped out of her seat. "Yes, Sally."

"Mr. Baldwin and Mr. Burns are waiting for you in the conference room for the conference call with Ernst & Young."

Julia took a deep breath, and was thankful to have been saved by the buzz. "Sally, please tell them that I'll be right there."

Julia grabbed the projections which were in front of her and stood up. "Duty calls."

Jerry stood up and grabbed her hand as she walked past him. "Julia, this conversation is not over. It has barely begun in fact."

Julia's eyes met his stare and she turned to walk out of the room as Jerry let go of her hand. Jerry sat back down in the chair in front of her desk. "No Julia, this is not over. I am not going to let you run away anymore."

Saratoga Springs, New York -- 2:30pm

Jax carried Jillian in her car seat off the little jet as Brenda carried Jillian's diaper bag and the backpack carrier. Fortunately, it was a warm and sunny day almost ten degrees warmer than the average temperatures for early spring. A car was awaiting the Jacks family as they exited the aircraft.

"Jax, where are we? I had no idea we would be traveling out of Port Charles. I did not even know what to dress for."

"You are fine and we won't be away from Port Charles that long."

Brenda raised her eyebrow. "So this is a short trip?"

"Stop trying to figure things out, Brenda."

"How could I possibly do that when I do not have a clue as to where we even are. All airstrips look alike."

Jax grinned. "Fortunately they do."

The three of them piled into the limousine and headed off.

"You really aren't going to tell me where we are going? I can't even get a clue?"

Jax laughed. "Not only are you not going to get a clue but you will be denied the ability to gather them for yourself."

"What are you talking about?"

"You will see or won't see as the case may be."

"Jax, do you know how insane you are driving me? I only want ..."

Her talking was immediately stopped as his lips covered hers. She moaned as Jax gently sucked on her bottom lip. Brenda opened her mouth completely to allow his tongue free access. The kiss intensified as his tongue stroked the roof of her mouth. Her tongue joined his and Jax groaned. The kiss lingered until they finally had to come up for air.

Jax put his arm around her as she leaned against him. "That is enough questions, Mrs. Jacks. We are just about there."

Brenda was still recovering from the passion and intensity of the kiss so silence was not a problem for now.

Ten minutes later, the limousine came to a stop. Jax and Brenda got out of the car and he put on the backpack carrier as she took Jillian out of the car seat. Brenda put the baby into the backpack carrier and was now raring to go.

"Just a minute, Mrs. Jacks. You need something before we go. Come over here."

"What do I need?"

"This." Jax pulled the blindfold out of his jacket pocket.

Brenda's eyes widened. "You can't be serious."

"I most certainly am."

Jax put on the blindfold and waved his hand in front of Brenda's face to check if it was secure. "No peeking."

"This is ridiculous. I will probably fall and kill myself."

Jax laughed. "I won't let that happen. Let's go."

Jax took her hand and they walked down the hill. After a few minutes, they stopped and Jax stood in front of Brenda. He then took her blindfold off and told her to keep her eyes closed. Jax then moved beside her. "You can turn around now."

Brenda turned around and her mouth flew wide open. In front of her stood an antique Venetian carousel restored to its original beauty. It was over one hundred years old but looked as magnificent as the day it first had been completed. The horses were hand painted in pastels and scenes from Venice wrapped around the top of the carousel. Jax waved to the operator and the sounds of Venice were heard. It was as if Brenda was in San Marco's Piazza again.

Brenda moved closer to the extraordinary sight before her. Her voice was no louder than a whisper. "Jax, how did you know? How did you know how much I loved carousels and about my.." She couldn't finish the sentence, the tears were freely flowing now.

Jax finished the sentence for her. "About your eighth birthday?"

Brenda turned around to face him. "Yes."

"Julia told me. She told me that the Worlds Fair was in town during your birthday and how you told your father that all you wanted for your birthday was a chance to ride on the antique Venetian carousel at the Fair."

Brenda wiped her tears and took a deep breath. "Yes, and of course it didn't happen. He took Julia and left me at home. He actually took her on my birthday. The Fair was in town for two weeks but he chose that day to take her."

Jax walked over to her and put his arms around her. "I'm sorry baby. He did not know what he was missing."

Jax held her and sighed. Since his discussions with Julia about Brenda's birthday horrors, Jax had grown to hate Harlan Barrett even more than before. He wondered if it were possible to kill a man who was already dead because that is exactly what Jax wanted to do. How anyone could treat a child the way Harlan treated Brenda was beyond comprehension. Brenda had such a loving heart and Jax could not understand how anyone could deny a child who only wanted to be loved.

Brenda pulled away from Jax and smiled. "I can't believe you did this. Are you going to mend every bit of my pain from my past?"

Jax grinned. "Would that be so terrible?"

"I love you. I can't say it enough to you."

"Would you like a ride on the carousel?"

Brenda was beaming. "I thought you would never ask. I want the pink and ivory one." She ran over to the carousel. "Come on let's go. Jillian you are going to love this."

Jax shook his head and walked over to the carousel and took his seat atop a gray horse adorned with royal blue. "Are you ready, Jillian? Here we go."

The carousel began to move and Brenda laughed as the horses moved up and down. Jax was on the horse beside her so she could see Jillian laughing. The carousel stopped and they switched horses. This time, Brenda sat on a yellow horse while Jax sat on a blue one. The music started again and then the horses began to move. Jillian laughed again and this pattern was continued until Brenda had ridden every horse on the carousel.

Jax took Brenda's hand and helped her off the carousel. "Well, are you dizzy yet?"

Brenda hugged him. "No, that was perfect. What is this place?"

"We are at Saratoga Springs Farm. The owner raises thoroughbreds and he bought the carousel ten years ago and had it restored for his grandchildren. You have become his honorary granddaughter for the day."

"I should have known it was a horse farm, it feels like one. I have never told you how much I love horses. I spoke to your mom briefly about it once when she showed me pictures of some of her prize-winning thoroughbreds."

"No, you have not talked about it."

Brenda sighed. "Just another one of those childhood fantasies. As much as Jerry is obsessed with kangaroos, I was obsessed with horses while I was growing up. Before I was sent off to boarding school, our neighbor had this beautiful black stallion on his farm. He was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen. He looked just like Black Beauty with that white star on his head. His coat shined like silver and I swear he could speak to you with his eyes. I learned a lot about horses the last summer before I went away to school. I spent every day with him. His name was Mr. Majestic and I missed him more than my father and Julia went I left for Europe."

Brenda took a deep breath and continued. "I took equestrian classes at school and it was the only thing I excelled in or enjoyed. When I came home the next summer from school, the neighbors had run into some terrible luck with their farm and had to sell everything. I begged my father to let me buy Mr. Majestic but he refused. He hated horses so he was rejoicing that the farm was being sold. Mr. Majestic was sold and I never saw him again. I also lost all desire to ever see or ride a horse again. I gave up my equestrian classes at school and never really thought about it again.

"I'm sorry. I wish I could change all the hell your father put you through."

Brenda smiled. "Sometimes I think that I had to go through that in order to get to where I am now. If that is the case, then all those years of horror would have been worth it just to have one day with you. I have had a lot more days than that so I figured I beat out the past."

He took her face in his hands. "You have overcome it and destroyed it, Brenda. Never forget that." Jax brought her lips to his and gave her a long, drugging kiss.

As their lips parted, Brenda took his hand and brought it to her lips. "Thank you for an incredible afternoon. I will never ever forget it."

"You are welcome, sweetie. There is one more thing though."

Brenda looked up at him. "What?"

"Your actual birthday gift." Jax put his hands on her shoulders and turned her around to face the open field. He was standing in front of them a few yards in the distance. He was a sight.

"Oh my God." Brenda's feet would not move so Jax put his arm around her and began walking with her toward the field. "It looks just like him."

"There is a reason for that. This is Mr. Majestic's great grandson and now he belongs to you."

"How did you do this?"

"Actually I can't take most of the credit. Mum did all the research and found him after Julia told me about Mr. Majestic. He has champion bloodlines, Brenda. His father was a multi-champion. Mum is jealous. She would have wanted him for herself if it weren't for you."

"Jax, this is unbelievable. I can't even put into words what I want to say to you."

"Words aren't necessary, that look on your face says it all."

"How are we going to do this?"

"Mum has made the arrangements with a friend of hers who raises thoroughbreds about sixty miles outside of Port Charles. He is being moved there next week. You can decide what you want to do with him after that. You can leave him there or Mum can raise him or you can find another farm for him."

Brenda began stroking behind his ears. "He is so beautiful. What's his name?"

"Mum has been referring to him as Brenda's Dream but you can call him anything you would like. He is yours so you have to name him."

Brenda shook her head and smiled. "Brenda's Dream, that is exactly what my life is now. It is the perfect name for him. Jane was right."

Jax and Brenda spent some time with the newest member of the family and Brenda took Jillian out of the carrier to show her the horse up close. The baby's eyes were as big as saucers when the horse neighed and Jax and Brenda laughed.

As the sun began to fall from the sky, the limousine reached the plane. Once they had boarded the jet, Brenda fed Jillian a bottle and their trip back to Port Charles had begun. As the bright fireball set, the sky was painted with orange and pink colors. The view of the horizon from the windows of the plane was breathtaking.

Brenda looked at Jillian who was now peacefully sleeping after her eventful afternoon. Brenda leaned over and kissed the baby's forehead. Brenda then took Jax's hand in hers and laced her fingers through his.

"Have I told you I love you in the last fifteen minutes?"

Jax flashed her a huge grin. "No, you have not."

Brenda whispered to him. "I love you."

Jax kissed her forehead. "I love you and I want you to have everything you have ever wanted."

"I do and it is right here."

"I want everything to be perfect for you."

Brenda nodded. "It already is. Don't you remember the fortune teller the first time we went to New Orleans? She said love conquers all and I translated that to mean that love heals things."

"I remember."

"Well, it was true. I certainly know that now. Love does heal all things."

Jax put his arms around Brenda and she rested her head against his chest. Jax's other hand held Brenda's hand over her heart. Brenda closed her eyes and sighed and Jax smiled. She was right. Love did heal all things.
