Love is the Answer

The Jacks Residence -- 7:00am

The sun was shining through the french doors as Jax awoke. He wrapped his arms tightly around Brenda and she edged closer to him. She was still sound asleep and her left arm was wrapped around his neck while her right hand rested over his heart. Jax took a deep breath and momentarily closed his eyes at the feel of her warm naked body pressed against him. She had spent the night in this position after their tender lovemaking.

She had been so happy about their trip to Saratoga Springs and her birthday gifts the day before. They had returned to Port Charles last night from their afternoon adventure and had a simple yet elegant dinner at home. They had danced until midnight when their bed then became their dance floor. Jax had made slow, sensual love to her until well into the early morning hours. After Brenda had fallen asleep, Jax spent the next hour simply watching her. Her dreams made her smile and she murmured his name. Jax felt tugs to his heart as he gazed at her. She had never seemed happier and Jax's heart was filled with joy over his role in that. Seeing her happy gave him the greatest pleasure he had ever known.

Jax gazed down at Brenda and gently brushed the loose curl which had fallen onto her forehead. She was so beautiful and Jax's thoughts went immediately back to their early morning lovemaking. She had whispered words of love to him as her body had joined with his in a passionate display of love. Her eyes had reflected the burning desire racing through her body. Brenda had given herself completely to him and their ardor still could be felt in his heart and soul. Her full, sexy lips looked so inviting to him that Jax could not resist the urge to feel the warmth of them against his lips again. He leaned down and kissed her forehead. Then he lowered his head and kissed her on the corners of her mouth.

Brenda smiled as she kept her eyes closed. "Who is trying to entice me so early in the morning?"

"You'll have to open your eyes to see."

"I'm too tired to open my eyes. Somebody kept me up half the night."

Jax grinned. "I'll get those eyes opened."

Jax lifted her chin and his lips overtook hers in a scintillating kiss which sent flames right to Brenda's heart. She moaned as she ran her fingers through his hair. Jax finally pulled away from their blazing display of passion. Brenda was dazed from the kiss as she slowly opened her eyes.

Jax grinned. "I told you I would get those eyes open."

Brenda swatted Jax's arm. "No fair to do that to me before I even get my bearings. Are you trying to stop my heart?"

Jax kissed her on the corners of her mouth again. "Sorry but those lips are simply irresistible."

Brenda took Jax's arm and hugged it to her chest. "Then I guess I have at least one more birthday until you trade me in for a younger woman."

Jax left a trail of kisses down her neck. "I figured I could put up with you for one more year but once your next birthday arrives, out with the old and in with the new."

Brenda smiled to herself. "I know the feeling. Fortunately your birthday is two months before mine, so I will already have a younger man at my side. You will just have to fend for yourself."

"Oh, you think you can replace me that easily?" Jax began tickling her.

Brenda was giggling. "No, please don't. Stop."

Jax continued tickling her stomach. "You did not answer me."

Brenda tried to squirm away from him. "You started it with this talk about replacing me."

Jax grabbed both of her arms and gazed at her. "Trust me, you are not replaceable."

She was mesmerized by his deep blue eyes. "You just try to get rid of me, Mr. Jacks. I will make it an impossible feat."

Jax whispered. "Is that a promise?"

Brenda nodded as she looked down at him. "From the bottom of my heart."

Brenda lowered her mouth to his and they were immediately lost in each other. The kiss deepened and she wrapped her arms around Jax's neck. The sheet slipped down Brenda's chest as Jax's hands gently caressed her breasts. Brenda moved completely on top of him as the door to the master suite opened.

Jerry walked into the suite, skimming the front page of the newspaper as he headed toward the bedroom area. "Good morning. I brought you the paper figuring you would want to see the article on the Idle Rich. The article is..."

Brenda shrieked and quickly slid under the sheets. Jax then ran his hand through his hair and caught his breath.

"Jerry, what the hell are you doing? Don't you believe in knocking?"

Jerry shook his head. "I did. I guess you two were otherwise engaged. Don't you two ever quit? You are worse than rabbits."

Jax took a deep breath. "What do you want?"

"I just came in so I could give Brenda the paper to see the feature article on the Idle Rich. Here it is. Enjoy -- not that I don't think you will."

Brenda finally spoke. "Thank you."

Jerry turned around before he left the suite. "I hope you two use reliable birth control. Otherwise, every bedroom in this house is going to be filled and you will really be living like the Waltons."

Jax rolled his eyes. "Get out!"

Brenda put her hands over her face and laughed. "Great, just one more person who thinks we are sex maniacs."

Jax began laughing as well. "Like they say, the truth hurts."

Jax pulled Brenda into his arms and they began their latest journey of love. They figured the least thing they could do was to live up to their reputation.

J & J Jacks -- 3:00pm

The board meeting for the Charles Street Foundation was coming to a close. Jerry stared across the conference room at Julia. She lowered her eyes to avoid his gaze. Julia had made sure that they never had the opportunity to finish their conversation from yesterday about having so much in common and the meaning of that. Julia did not want to know what it meant. Every time her mind wandered to yesterday's discussion, the knots in her stomach tightened.

The meeting was adjourned and Julia quickly escorted most of the board members from the office. Justus was talking to Jax as Edward continued to squawk about Ned's absence from the meeting. The Idle Rich tour had started over the past weekend and this was the first week of Ned's leave of absence. Jax looked over at Edward and shook his head. Justus nodded at Jax to acknowledge the entertainment value that Edward's complaints had provided to everyone during the afternoon.

Jax walked over to Edward and patted him on the back. "Should I send Addie to get you another lemon?"

Edward tilted his head and shot Jax a look of confusion. "What the hell are you talking about?"

Jax grinned. "I figured you have been sucking on lemons all day to give you that sour face and matching disposition."

Jerry laughed. "Hell, I thought he was born like that, Jax."

Edward waved his hands in the air as if to dismiss the Jacks brothers. "Both of you get away from me."

Jax's eyes widened as he feigned ignorance. "Edward, was it something we said?"

Edward started shaking his finger at Jax. "Listen here you, pirate, I am not going to stand here and listen to this. Just because you are a blond, blue-eyed dashing charmer, do not think you have fooled anyone. I know what you want and ELQ is not available."

Jax smiled. "Dashing charmer? Edward, I did not know you cared."

Jerry shook his head. "Poor Lila. Edward, does she know how much you admire Jax's dashing charm?"

Jax added to the fray. "Or my blue eyes. How jealous should Brenda be?"

It looked like smoke was about to come out of Edward's ears. "Get out of my way you, ingrates." Edward stomped out of the conference room.

Justus had to compose himself before becoming hysterical. He shook his head and smiled as he left the conference room. Jax gave Jerry a high five as they followed Justus out the door.

Jax waved as Edward reached the main door. "Come back soon, Edward."

Jerry smiled. "Eddie, please remember to break the news gently to Lila about your admiration of Jax. She is such a lovely woman."

Edward fumed and left the office slamming the door behind him. Jerry and Jax laughed. Whoever said board meetings couldn't be fun?

Jerry walked toward Julia's office. He breezed past Sally and walked into the office without knocking. He closed the door behind him as a startled Julia turned toward him. "What do you think you are doing?"

"You have been avoiding me, Ms. Barrett. I am not going to put up with that any longer."

"You are being ridiculous, I have been doing no such thing. I am busy, get out."

Jerry sat down in the chair in front of the desk. "Forget it."

"Excuse me but get the hell out of here. I am on my way out."

"A likely story. Avoiding the issue is not going to make it go away, Julia."

Julia shook her head. "There is no issue. You have really lost your mind. I am not going to argue about this with you."

"Give it up, Julia. It is time to face the truth about what is going on here."

"There is nothing going on."

At that moment Scott knocked on the door. "Julia, are you ready to go?"

Julia breathed a huge sigh of relief. "Yes, I have all the projections and Sally has already faxed them to Fran and Elizabeth at Ernst & Young so they will be ready when we get there."

"Great, maybe this won't be all night then. See you later, Jerry."

"Good-bye Scott."

Julia grabbed her briefcase and walked past Jerry. Jerry spoke softly. "You can't keep running. We will discuss this."

"There is nothing to discuss. Let it be."

Julia left the office with Scott and Jerry muttered to himself. "No Julia, those days are over. This will be resolved and I mean sooner rather than later."

The Jacks Residence -- 8:00pm

Brenda had dressed Jillian for bed and was walking down the stairs with her as Jerry walked in the front door.

Brenda noticed the scowl on his face immediately. "What is the matter?"

Jerry looked up at her. "I will give you three guesses and the first two do not count."

"What did she do now?"

Jerry sighed. "She refuses to discuss matters. Ever since yesterday, she has been avoiding me at every turn. She locked herself in her office all morning then we had the board meeting and then she and Scott went to meet with the accountants. "

Jerry and Brenda walked into the den and Brenda sat down on the couch with the baby. "What happened yesterday? What have I missed?"

Jerry poured himself a drink. "We were actually talking about your birthday and how beautiful the Barrett women are. She blushed when I paid her the compliment and then I told her how she surprised me at times with the differences in her personality. Julia admitted that she was surprised that I had a heart. She did not deny it when I told her how like we were. Things became intense when I asked her what she thought that meant and then we were interrupted. She hightailed it out of there as if the room was on fire but I told her the discussion was not over."

Brenda nodded. "But she is not willing to finish it. Strike that, she is too afraid to finish it."

Jerry sat down next to Brenda and she handed him Jillian. "She would rather go in front of a firing squad than finish it. I knew that her car was in the garage and that she left her briefcase in the office so I waited for her to come back. Scott walked into the office a half hour ago without her. He said she decided to leave the briefcase and head home right from the garage."

Brenda shook her head. "You didn't move your car, did you?"

"No. Why?"

"Next time, be sure to move it. Then she will think you have gone home and she will come back into the office."

"This is ridiculous." Jerry lifted Jillian above his head and the baby laughed. "Jillian, your aunt is going to be the death of me yet."

"Just see what happens tomorrow. She will let her guard down eventually."

"If it is tomorrow, it will do me no good. The drilling rights contract has hit a major road block. I have got to get to Australia tomorrow. I'll be there for several days."

Brenda rested her head against Jerry's shoulder. "Maybe the space will help. They say absence makes the heart grow fonder. You will figure out how to make her admit what is really going on. Just don't give up."

Jax walked into the den after finishing his phone call with Hong Kong about a new merger deal. "Well, this is a sight. Leave your wife and daughter alone for a few minutes and your older brother makes his moves on them."

Jerry put Jillian on his lap. "Brenda, I thought you said Jax would be tied up for at least another hour."

Brenda giggled. "Well, he had to find out some time. I guess now is as good as a time as any."

Jerry kissed Brenda on the forehead and turned to Jax. "I told you the day I first met Brenda that one day she would see the light. She has finally come to her senses and realized that I am the real prize in the family. We are running off together to Australia."

Jax rolled his eyes. "The day that happens, I will have to check Brenda into a sanitarium because we would all know that she had lost her bloody mind."

Jerry shrugged his shoulders. "Jax, I know it is hard but you should be used to losing to me by now."

Jax walked over to the couch. "Go find your own wife and give me my daughter. The poor baby is probably trembling after just hearing your delusions."

Jerry stood up and gave Jillian to Jax and Jax sat on the couch next to Brenda. "Yes, Jillian. Daddy is here. Bad Uncle Jerry is gone."

Brenda swatted Jax on the arm. "Jax, stop that." Brenda caressed the baby's face. "Uncle Jerry is not bad, Jillian."

"No, he is just a lunatic."

Jerry shook his head. "With that, I will bid you adieu."

Brenda rested her hand on Jax's thigh as she spoke to Jerry. "I asked Jose to keep your dinner warm. I'll bring Jillian to you to say good night."

Jerry sighed. "Well, at least one person loves me in this house."

Jax grinned. "That is simply because she has only known you for a year. Just give her some time."

Jerry ignored Jax's comments and left the den. Brenda laid her head on Jax's shoulder as Jax played with the baby.

"He is miserable, Jax, and my sister is not in any better shape either."

Jax kissed the top of her head. "Sweetie, I know but only the two of them can work this out. If it was meant to be, they will be together."

"I just know how close I came to losing you because I refused to open up my heart. I just don't want Julia making the same mistake."

Jax laughed. "Well, it would not exactly be the same magnitude of an error for Julia since it is Jerry we are talking about rather than me. Losing me would have been a real disaster."

Brenda smiled and turned to face Jax. "It would have been the greatest tragedy of all. I thank God every day for giving me the wisdom to come to my senses and for giving you the trust and patience to wait for me."

Jax's lips lightly brushed hers and then Brenda rested her head against his left shoulder. He lifted Jillian to his right shoulder and put his right arm around Brenda. Jax had everything he ever wanted in the whole world in his arms now. He smiled as he laid his cheek on top of Brenda's head. Everyone should be so lucky.

The Jacks Residence -- 8:00am

The past week had flown by quickly. Brenda had been handling all the L&B matters as Lois continued to travel with Ned on the tour. Reviews were great and each concert had been sold out. Jax had handled the Canadian Timber issues with Julia since Jerry was traveling. Jax was also in the process of finalizing the preliminary details for a hostile take-over of a software company in Toronto. Jerry had returned home last night from Melbourne after hammering out the drilling rights contract.

Brenda had finished feeding Jillian in the kitchen and walked into the dining room. She put Jillian in the playpen and sat at the table as Jax came into the room. He walked over to Jillian and she grabbed his finger. Jax kissed Brenda good morning and then sat at the table and began reading the financial section of the newspaper.

Brenda took a sip of her coffee. "Have you seen Jerry yet this morning? He came in so late last night, he must be exhausted."

"No, but I heard his attempt at singing when I walked by his suite. One day a rooster is going to show up here thinking it has heard a mating cry."

Brenda sighed. "You are terrible."

Jax tweaked her nose. "Yes, but you love me like that."

Brenda raised her eyebrow. "Unfortunately, yes. I guess it is a curse."

Jerry walked into the dining room and walked over to the playpen to see Jillian. "Roo, you are sitting up. When did this happen?"

Brenda smiled. "Earlier this week. See what you miss when you are away."

Jerry picked up Jillian from the playpen. "Well, you are just growing up too fast."

Jax looked up from the newspaper. "She is just gifted. What else what you expect though? Look who her father is."

Jerry shook his head. "So, Brenda, you finally broke the news to Jax that he is not Jillian's father."

Brenda rolled her eyes. "I see your exhaustion has not affected your sarcasm."

Jerry put Jillian back down into the playpen and sat at the table. "Or my quick wit."

Jax grinned. "Oh, that's what you call it?"

Brenda passed Jerry the cream. "Are you satisfied with the results in Melbourne?"

"We had to give up a little of the profit margin for a longer term of the contract but I still think it is a very lucrative deal."

Jax handed Jerry a section of the paper. "Dad is convinced of the profitability of the transaction as well."

Brenda grabbed a piece of toast. "I miss your parents. It has been over two months since we have seen them."

Jax drank his orange juice. "This is always a hectic time of year for Mum with the ranch and the start of the racing and show seasons."

Brenda nodded. "I know. I can't believe she still found time to take care of the arrangements for Dream to be transported to Middlebrook Farm."

Jerry looked at Brenda. "Is the newest member of the family in the area yet?"

Brenda smiled. "Yes, he arrived on Monday. We are going to go see him Saturday. You should come with us. We are making a vacation out of it and staying the entire weekend at an inn near the farm."

Jax laughed and Jerry glared at him. "Maybe some other time."

Brenda turned to Jax. "What is so funny?"

Jax cleared his throat. "Let's just say that horses and my brother are not the best of friends."

"Why on earth not?"

Jerry sipped his coffee. "They are too deranged for my liking. I think there was a glitch in the formula when they were created."

Brenda gave Jerry a confused look. "Why may I ask?"

Jax was laughing again. "Because Mum's first thoroughbred had a vendetta against Jerry. His name was Australian Prince and Jerry swore the horse stalked him."

Jerry rolled his eyes and Brenda shook her head. "You think a horse stalked you?"

"That damn beast did stalk me. Every time I was out in the corral area, it would follow me. He had this look in his eyes and he used to spit at me. That horse would not let me out if its sight for one second. He would pace back and forth. He was completely demented."

Now both Brenda and Jax were laughing. Brenda patted Jerry on the arm. "I promise I will speak to Dream and make sure he does not ever even give you a passing glance."

"Have your fun both of you. I know the truth about those bloody beasts."

Brenda finally composed herself. "Well actually, this is just one other thing that you have in common with Julia. She is not a fan of horses either."

Jerry cleared his throat. "Speaking of Julia, how is she?"

Brenda smiled. "She is okay. She was here the night before last for dinner. I know she has missed you."

Jerry sighed. "We will see about that when I see her today."

Jax put the newspaper down. "You won't see her this morning. She has a morning meeting in Manhattan for Barrett Industries so she won't be in until late this afternoon."

"Fine. This afternoon will be soon enough."

Brenda looked at Jerry. "Soon enough for what?"

"For her to finally start seeing what is staring her right in the face."

Brenda smiled. "Is it safe to presume that you did some thinking on your trip?"

"Yes, and the time has come. This has gone on long enough and something has to change today."

Jax took a deep breath and Brenda sighed. They both realized that nothing was ever going to be the same after today. Significant changes were in the air and they would all be affected. Tomorrow would start a new chapter in the family and business ventures of the Jacks and Barrett families. All anyone could do now was hope for the best.

J & J Jacks -- 3:00pm

Jerry had been on a conference call when Julia arrived at the office from her meeting in Manhattan. She had immediately gone to her office and told Sally that she was not to be disturbed. She had seen Jerry's car in the parking garage and knew that he was back from Australia. The last thing she needed today was another go-round with him about their so called relationship.

As requested, Francesca alerted Jerry of Julia's arrival once he had finished his conference call. Jerry made a few notes in the file and then took a deep breath. He had not really decided what he was going to say to Julia but he knew that this game of cat and mouse had to end today.

Jerry walked to Julia's office and Sally smiled at him when he entered the doorway. "Good afternoon Mr. Jacks. Welcome back."

"Hi Sally. I understand Julia has returned from Manhattan."

"Yes, she has but I have strict instructions that she is not to be disturbed. She is handling a problem with Barrett Industries."

Jerry looked at the telephone on Sally's desk and saw that Julia's line was lit. He then heard Julia's raised voice. She was definitely exasperated about something.

"I want to go over the latest developments of Canadian Timber with her when she is available. Would you have her buzz me when she has a few moments?"

"Certainly, Mr. Jacks. I will give her the message as soon as she is available."

"Thank you Sally."

Jerry left the office and Sally shook her head. Sally was well aware of the electricity between Jerry and Julia and could not help wondering why Julia was putting up such walls around her. Sally had noticed a change in Julia's mood when Jerry was away. Sally knew that as much as Julia tried to keep Jerry at a distance, his absence had bothered her. It was silly, life was too short for these games.

Jerry sighed as he walked toward his office suite. His patience had reached its limit but barging in on Julia in the middle of a business crisis was not going to help things one bit. As Jerry passed Jax's office suite, Brenda came through the door into the corridor.

"My dear sister-in-law, what brings you to the business for profit side rather than the non-profit side of the floor?"

"I just finished a late lunch with Jax."

Jerry shook his head. "Don't you two ever get sick of each other?"

Brenda smiled. "Not in this lifetime." She noticed his glum mood. "Jerry, are you all right?"

Jerry gave her a look of misery and shook his head. Brenda took his hand and led him back to his office. She said hello to Francesca and then closed the door behind them as they entered Jerry's private office.

"What happened?"

Jerry sat down behind his desk and began drumming a pencil on the arm of his chair. "Nothing. That is the problem."

"I understand she is back."

"Yes, but she is behind closed doors. Sally says there is a problem with Barrett."

Brenda sighed. "Well, I don't think this would be a good time to break down the door and present your case then."

Jerry threw the pencil on top of the desk. "I understand that but I have reached the end of my rope."

"It seems to me that there is never going to be a good time to discuss this while you are in this office. There are too many competing factors for Julia, whether they be real or invented."

"What are you suggesting? Should I knock her over the head with a club and carry her over my shoulder to a cave?"

Brenda laughed. "No, I think that would be a definite death sentence for you. I just think a different atmosphere is needed."

Jerry's intercom buzzed and he pressed the speaker button. Sally's voice was heard.

"Mr. Jacks, I have a message from Ms. Barrett. She says that she will be tied up the rest of the afternoon with the Barrett situation and will have to meet with you tomorrow about Canadian Timber."

"Sally, please tell her that I understand the situation with Barrett. My schedule is horrendous tomorrow so will you ask her if she is free for dinner this evening to discuss Canadian Timber."

Brenda smiled at Jerry as he awaited Sally's return to the phone. Sally came back to the line.

"I am sorry, Mr. Jacks, but Ms. Barrett says that tonight is not good for her. She will work around your schedule tomorrow."

Jerry shook his head. "Thank you Sally. I will figure something out for tomorrow."

Jerry depressed the intercom button and looked at Brenda. "What do you think her plans for this evening are, laundry or watering her plants?"

Brenda took a deep breath. Well, if you really are at the end of your rope about this, you could always find out firsthand what her plans are for the evening."

Jerry tapped his fingers on the desk. "Yes, I could. It is time to put all the cards on the table."

Brenda cleared her throat. "Jerry, are you really prepared to do that? If you are not completely sure, then I do not think this is a good idea. I am not even certain how good an idea it is even if you are sure. She could be pushed to a point of no return. It would be a grave error on her part, but it could still happen."

"I am sure about this. I have to do it and it has to be done tonight. This game is over."

Julia's Loft -- 8:00pm

Julia collapsed onto the couch in the living room. The Barrett Industries crisis was over for today. She was exhausted. She kicked off her shoes and looked at her watch. The last thing she wanted to do was think about food but she had do something for dinner. The thought of food made her immediately think back to Sally's message from Jerry about wanting to discuss Canadian Timber over dinner this evening. That thought sent chills through her. She was not in the mind set to be able to successfully deal with Jerry tonight.

The doorbell rang and Julia groaned. She ignored the bell hoping the visitor would go away. The door bell sounded again and she groaned again. If this was a salesperson, she was going to scream. She slowly rose from the sofa and then she heard his voice.

"Julia, open up the door. I know you are in there."

A flash of panic shot through her. She muttered to herself. "What is he doing here?"

The doorbell rang again. "Julia, come on. Open the door."

Julia slowly walked to the door and muttered again. "What have I done to deserve this tonight of all nights?"

She took a deep breath and opened the door.

"Finally. What took you so long?"

Julia shook her head. "Why are you here? I don't seem to remember extending an invitation to you."

"Sally told me you were too tied up to go out to dinner so I brought it." Jerry held up the bag. "I hope you are in the mood for chinese." He then walked through the door and headed to the kitchen.

Julia stood there still stunned for a moment. She finally closed the front door and walked into the kitchen. Jerry was opening various cabinet doors.

"I told you when you moved in that these cabinets were arranged poorly. Nothing is where it is supposed to be."

Julia put her hands on her hips. "Excuse me but everything is where it is supposed to be. What are you looking for?"

"Wine glasses. I picked up a bottle of vintage chardonay."

Julia took a deep breath. "Jerry, I appreciate all this but tonight is not really good for me."

Jerry sighed and turned around to face her. "When is there ever going to be a good night or a good day or a good moment for you, Julia?"

Julia swallowed hard. This was already a nightmare. "What are you talking about?"

"Julia, you know damn well what I am talking about."

Julia felt like his stare was piercing straight through her. "Jerry, it has been a very long day and I am not in the mood for this."

"Well, that makes two of us but we are going to deal with this now. I am tired of these games."

"Games? You are talking about games? You are the master of games, Mr. Jacks."

"You are right about that but those days are over in terms of us."

"There is no us, Jerry."

Jerry laughed. "Julia, how many times are you going to have to say that to convince yourself that it is true?"

"I don't have to convince myself of anything."

Jerry walked closer to her. "What about Cortina? Don't tell me that there is no us."

Julia's breath caught in her throat for a moment. "It was a mistake. It was a kiss and it meant absolutely nothing."

Jerry moved closer and he spoke in an almost whisper. "Tell me you don't think about. Tell me that your lips don't still burn from it."

"Jerry, stop."

"Just admit it, I will. I can still feel you and the warmth of those lips. Do you have any idea how much I want you?"

Julia took a step back from him. "Jerry, I think you should leave."

"Why, so you can deny what we both know is true? This has been going on for months. Julia, you want me just as much as I want you."

Julia exhaled slowly. "Why are you doing this? Nothing has changed."

"Yes, it has. Things have changed for both of us but you are too afraid to admit it to yourself, let alone me."

"Please go."

"No, I won't go. Not until you know where I stand."

The room was spinning for her, this was pure torture. "Jerry, what do you want me to say? There is nothing here but some misplaced physical attraction."

"Refusing to admit how you really feel is not going to make it go away. You can't even look at me, Julia. You won't even broach the subject because it terrifies you so much. Believe me, I know what that feels like. I was guilty of the same thing but those days are over."

Julia was incensed. "You have no right to tell me how I feel."

"This affects both of us, Julia. It stopped being just about you or just about me a long time ago. I am not willing to wait any longer to be happy. God help me but you are the one who can give me that happiness."

Julia tried to stop herself from trembling. "What are you saying?"

"I love you. I said it."

Unconsciously, Julia backed up until she reached the refrigerator. She was thankful because it probably was the only reason she was still on her feet. "You don't love me. Jerry, you can't."

Jerry walked over to her. "I love you, Julia Barrett, and you love me."

Somehow Julia found her composure again to speak. "No, that is not true."

"Damnit Julia. Do you know how much time we have wasted?"

"Jerry, leave now."

Jerry looked at her and he could see that the walls were back up completely again. She was fighting him tooth and nail.

"Julia, we love each other and that is not going to change regardless of how long you plan to delude yourself. What will change is my willingness to wait for you to admit it. I do not intend to sit around in limbo forever until you acknowledge the truth. That is not a threat it is a fact."

"Jerry, get out."

"I will do that but not before this."

Jerry placed both his hands on Julia's face and his lips overtook hers. She wanted to fight him but her willpower was gone. She immediately surrendered her lips to his and moaned as he deepened the kiss. He finally released her lips leaving her knees so weak that she did not know how she was still standing.

"Remember that when you are deciding what your heart is really telling you."

Jerry walked out of the kitchen and then Julia heard the front door close. She stood there trembling and her heart was racing. She knew this was going to be a nightmare but this was worse than she ever imagined. How was she going to fight this now?

The Jacks Residence -- 7:00am

Brenda awoke in a slight daze. She looked across the room and saw Jax's shirt tossed over the chair. She then became aware that the shower was running. Brenda laid back against the pillows and hugged Jax's pillow. She smiled as she inhaled the scent of him. He was back home.

Brenda thought back to last night. She remembered being in the den when she was talking to Jerry about Julia. There had been no movement on that front. Julia was called to London over the weekend for the Barrett Industries crisis and had just returned yesterday morning. Due to her trip and his schedule, Jerry had not seen her since his admission to her at the loft last week. Jerry hoped that the time apart would give Julia the opportunity to come to terms with her feelings. Brenda had deliberately avoided the issue of Jerry all together in her two conversations with Julia since the confrontation at the loft. Brenda did not know exactly what Jerry had told Julia but Brenda knew from Jerry's statements that he must have made a full admission.

After her talk with Jerry, Brenda remembered watching the tape of 'Steel Magnolias.' She had her usual cry over the movie and the last thing she remembered was laying on the couch waiting for Jax to return from Toronto. He had left on Sunday night shortly after they had returned from their weekend at Middlebrook Farm to visit Dream. Jax had traveled to Toronto to undertake the hostile take-over of a software company.

Brenda heard the water shut off. She sat up and ran her hand through her hair and waited for him. The bathroom door opened and Jax walked out in his white terrycloth robe. The smile that appeared on her face melted his heart. Brenda crawled over to the end of the bed as Jax walked over to her. He lifted her up and she wrapped her legs around his waist. Their lips were drawn together like magnets. When their lips finally separated, Jax sat down on the bed with Brenda's legs still wrapped around him.

Brenda stroked his face. "Honey, I missed you so much."

Jax kissed her forehead. "I missed you too, sweetie."

"I am so glad you are back. What time did you get home?"

"After 1:00am. I wish you would not have tried to wait up. I told you I would be late."

"This bed is so lonely without you. I watched 'Steel Magnolia's and then I guess I fell asleep."

Jax grinned. "I saw the kleenex. How many times have you seen that movie? Between that and 'While You Were Sleeping,' you are going to wear out the tape."

Brenda smiled at him. "You just don't understand."

Jax laughed. "No, I guess I don't."

Brenda leaned her head against his shoulder. "You should have awakened me."

"You were sound asleep so I just carried you up here and changed your clothes and tucked you in for the night."

Brenda took her hand and moved it beneath Jax's robe to massage his chest. "Since you helped me get undressed last night, why don't I help you get out of this robe now."

Jax grabbed Brenda's hands. "There is nothing I would like more than that but I have a breakfast meeting to attend."

Brenda groaned and then nuzzled Jax's neck. "Breakfast meetings should be outlawed."

Jax kissed the top of her head. "With you around, that should be the case."

Brenda began kissing his throat. "Isn't there any way for me to change your mind?"

Jax stood up and set Brenda down from his arms. "Yes, that is what I am afraid of. I promise tonight you can show me how you were going to change my mind."

Brenda toyed with the belt of his robe. "Even if it takes all night?"

Jax traced the outline of her jaw. "I am counting on it taking all night."

"As long as you promise then I will make the ultimate sacrifice and let the breakfast meeting take precedence."

Jax ran his fingers through her hair. "I promise and this is certainly one promise I have no intention of breaking."

J & J Jacks -- 1:00pm

Julia sat behind her desk and her mind wandered. It was happening all the time now. She kept replaying the scene with Jerry in her head. She dreaded seeing him but matters were pending with Canadian Timber and they had to be addressed. This is what she had wanted to avoid. Mixing business with anything else never work. How could he love her? Julia shook her head trying to erase the memories but his words rang in her ears and had been doing so for days.

She wondered if Jerry had realized he had made a mistake when he said all those things to her. Maybe he did not even mean what he said. Possibly he was as apprehensive about seeing her as she was about seeing him. Could they get past it so they could still be civil to one another in both their family and business lives? Julia had knots in her stomach but she did not know why. She shuddered as she worried that part of her apprehension may be in the belief that Jerry had been mistaken and really did not love her. Julia groaned. She did not want him to love her -- she really did not.

She had to get this over with and stop tormenting herself. She buzzed Francesca and asked if Jerry was available. Francesca told her that Jerry was working in the conference room. Julia pulled herself together and prepared to face the music. She took a deep breath and left her office to go to the conference room.

She stood in the doorway and watched him. He was leaning back in a chair reading a report. Files and documents were spread out all over the table. She closed her eyes momentarily. Why did he have to be wearing that suit? It brought out the silver sparkles in his blue eyes. Julia composed herself and walked into the conference room, closing the door behind her. Jerry looked up from his report and their eyes met.

Julia cleared her throat. "Hello."

"I heard you were back."

"Yesterday but I guess I missed you when I came in to the office."

Jerry gave her a look of disinterest. "My schedule has been very busy."

"Well, I am back so I can pick up with Canadian Timber again."

"Fine. Francesca is typing up a progress report so I will be sure you get a copy."

"Great." Julia walked closer to the conference table. "Jerry, we need to talk about what happened the other day."

He put down the report. "I am listening."

Julia sat down across the table from him. "I am sure that things were said in the heat of the moment that were not really intended."

Jerry sighed. "Let me set one thing straight here, nothing I said was a mistake. I meant every word I said to you."

She took a deep breath. "Jerry, you may think that you meant what you said but..."

Jerry interrupted her. "So now you are telling me that I am mistaken in what I feel? A week ago, you were telling me I had no right to tell you how you felt and I am the one with the problem now?"

"That is not what I meant."

"Let's get this straight right now, Ms. Barrett. I love you. Did you hear me? I love you. We belong together. You love me and you would realize it if you just let yourself feel something instead of hiding behind those walls."

"Wait one minute. Don't you tell me how I feel."

"You just told me I did not mean what I said to you. How is that different?"

Julia shook her head. "This is ridiculous."

"That we agree on."

"Jerry, we have to work together. We are very different people and any idea you have to the contrary is just a fantasy."

"So now I am living in a fantasy world. What else, Julia?"

"Jerry, stop it."

Jerry shook his head. "Listen to yourself, you are making no sense. You are trying to come up with a reason for us not to be together but you can't."

"We are not going to be together. There is no together for us. We have responsibilities to our families and our business interests."

"What about responsibilities to ourselves? What about our own happiness?"

Julia put her hands on her hips. "That certainly is a selfish attitude."

"It may be but you have to grab the brass ring. It is not going to be dropped in your lap. You work every day for what you want in business, why would you expect it to be any different in your personal life?"

Julia sighed. "Why in heaven's name do you think we belong together? My God, we don't even like each other at times."

"I did not say this was ideal or without complications but whoever said it was supposed to be? Life is complicated, Julia, and you have to take what it gives you."

"Jerry, why are you doing this?"

"Because I love you and I know you love me. I know you don't want to be hurt and neither do I but we will both end up missing out if we don't try to be together."

"You don't know how I feel. You don't know what I want."

Jerry stood up. "You obviously are not prepared to consider your own feelings and needs right now. There is no point in discussing this until that time."

"Where are you going?"

"To go back to work. I will have Francesca bring you a copy of the Canadian Timber memorandum when it is completed. With reference to this discussion, if and when you are ready to be honest with yourself, come see me. I may or may not be interested at that time."

"Jerry."

Jerry walked to the door. "In the meantime, I will not get in your way. I trust we can continue to work together but if you feel you cannot, let me know so I can make other arrangements."

Julia glared at him. "Fine."

Jerry opened the door. "The ball is in your court, Ms. Barrett. You decide if you want to forfeit the game or start the second half."

Jerry left the office and Julia sunk into her chair. Things were getting worse by the minute and there was no end in sight. The situation had now become impossible.

The Jacks Residence --10:00pm

Brenda was on the phone in the office talking to Justus about their trip next week to Washington for a conference on the federal grant possibilities for the hospital housing facility. Earlier she had spent an hour on the phone with Lois going over some arrangements for the recording of the new CD for The Idle Rich when the band returned from the tour at the end of the month. Before that call, Lucy had stopped by with material samples for the bridesmaid gowns for the wedding next month.

Jax stood in the doorway of the office. This was definitely not the way he had intended to spend his first night back from his trip. He had barely had ten minutes alone with Brenda since she had come home from the office several hours ago. Jillian had been asleep for over an hour but Brenda had been tied up the entire time. It was time to make some changes to this situation.

Jax walked over to the desk and Brenda looked up at him and smiled. Jax put his arms around her and started blowing in her ear. She swatted his arm but he did not loosen his hold on her. Next, he began nibbling on her ear. Brenda whispered for him to stop. He then left a trail of kisses down her neck. When Brenda continued her phone conversation, Jax decided he had to pull out all the stops.

He brought a chair next to the desk and sat down. Jax then took her left leg and removed the sandal from her foot. He massaged the ball of her foot and Brenda shook her head at him and tried to swat his arm away. She knew what he was going to do and she knew she would have no power to resist him. Jax brought her foot to his mouth and he began sucking on her toes one at a time. His mouth and tongue were driving her wild and that was his intent. Brenda quickly hung up the phone just as Jax began giving her right foot the same pleasure.

Brenda looked at Jax. "You know that drives me crazy."

Jax massaged the balls of her feet. "Not having you in my arms this evening was driving me crazy."

Brenda shook her head. "I understood when you had to go to a breakfast meeting this morning but you didn't do the same for me this evening when I had business to attend to. Mr. Jacks, I think you will have to make some restitution for that."

Jax grinned at her. "Ooh punishment. I love when you punish me."

Brenda tapped her finger on her cheek. "Let's see, what will the penalty be?"

Jax kissed her hand. "Whatever it is, make it fast so we can start enjoying each other's company."

"Okay, I have it." Brenda stood up and slowly walked toward the door. "You have to catch me in order to enjoy my company."

Brenda darted out the office door in her bare feet. Jax followed behind her and saw her turn the corner. She ran into the library and Jax followed her in there. They were on the opposite sides of the chairs and table in the center of the room. They were mirroring each other's movements but the furniture between them was preventing Jax from catching her.

"I am going to get you."

Brenda giggled. "You have to catch me first."

Brenda decided to dart toward the opposite door. She reached the door first and pulled it shut behind her, slamming it in Jax's face. She and hurried down the hall and ran into game room. She realized she had trapped herself since there was only way out and that was through the door she entered. She heard Jax in the hall so she hid behind the door.

Jax walked toward the game room door. "I know you are in there."

Jax walked into the room and turned on the lights. He walked further into the room as Brenda held her breath behind the door. He looked at Jacks Bot and she was not there. He walked toward the slot machine but did not see her. He began walking toward the big screen television and he caught a glimpse of the door moving. He turned around and grabbed her from behind and kicked the door shut.

Jax began nuzzling her ear. "Mrs. Jacks, I caught you."

Brenda closed her eyes and ran her hand through his hair. "You did."

"So now we can start enjoying each other."

Brenda turned into his arms and their lips met. The kiss was tantalizing from the first moment. Brenda moaned into Jax's mouth as his tongue began exploring her mouth. The kiss deepened and Brenda felt as if she could feel the searing kiss all the way to her toes. The kisses were scintillating and erotic. Jax lifted her up and she wrapped her legs around him.

Brenda spoke between kisses. "How many steps to the bedroom?"

Jax ran his tongue over her lips. "Too many."

Jax carried her over to the pool table and sat her down on its ledge. He kissed her throat and pulled the blouse from inside her jeans. His fingers reached for the buttons of her blouse. Passions were already at full tilt and his fingers were not fast enough. He ripped open her blouse as two of the bottom three buttons flew across the room.

Jax removed her blouse and his hands stroked her black satin bra. His hands cupped her breasts and he could feel the response to his touch through the material. Brenda began unbuttoning Jax's shirt as she dropped baby kisses on the uncovered skin of his chest. Jax quickly threw off his shirt and then his tongue stroked the valley between Brenda's breasts. He unhooked the front clip of her bra and her breasts fell from the confines of the material. The bra landed on the growing pile of clothes on the floor.

Brenda caught her breath. "What if someone comes in?"

"The door is closed and it is late."

Brenda brought his mouth to hers and hungrily kissed him again. She wanted him and she wanted him now. Jax began unbuttoning her jeans. He lifted her up from the table ledge and she pushed the jeans down her hips. Jax pulled them down her legs and threw them on the pile. Brenda fumbled for the button of his jeans but Jax's hands stopped her.

"I want to watch you first, baby."

Jax then slid Brenda's bottom off the ledge of the table so that she was now on the cover of the pool table itself. He gently eased her onto the table as his hands explored her completely. She trembled with excitement at the feel of his touch. She gasped as Jax's fingers removed the last remnants of her clothes. She cried out to him. "Jax, please." Brenda lifted her hips up and down. She could feel herself losing control. Her gasps of pleasure were fueling his passions.

"It's okay sweetie. Let go baby."

Brenda was panting. "Jax."

"I'm here baby. You are so beautiful."

She was breathless now. "I love you Jax."

"I love you too baby. I'm right here."

Brenda felt like she was melting right into the table. She rocked her hips and she grabbed his shoulders for support. Jax's hand caressed her chest. Brenda cried out his name as Jax watched the expression on her face as heaven opened up to her. She continued to moan as the exhilaration continued. Finally she caught her breath and reached for him. It was time for his turn at enjoyment.

Jax stood up and she unbuttoned his jeans. She pushed his jeans from his waist and Jax removed them. His boxers were quickly removed and she slid further up the table. Jax eased on top of her and his mouth went immediately to her chest. Her legs wrapped around him and she rocked her hips. She felt the intensity of his desire for her. Their lips joined in a series of combustible kissed as their bodies merged together. They moved together in unison as their love was shared in a grand display of passion. Jax murmured, "I love you," and then overtook her lips once again.

Brenda arched her back as he took her higher. The room was spinning from the pleasure they were giving and receiving. He was fighting his control but he was losing. She was driving him wild with the passion of her responses. Brenda stretched her arms over her head and Jax held them against the table as he murmured her name. They cried out together as ecstasy was realized. Multiple explosions transpired between them. The fires of their passion consumed them. It was wild and passionate and intense.

Brenda rested in his arms after their extraordinary display of passion. Jax had picked up his shirt from the floor and wrapped it around her.

"Jax, you were incredible."

"So were you."

Brenda lifted her head and looked at their surroundings. "The pool

table, this is a first."

Jax ran his fingers through her hair. "I hope not the last."

Brenda smiled. "It reminds me of the penthouse during our newlywed days. We made use of quite a few pieces of furniture."

Jax laughed. "I remember hitting my head on the cabinet when we were on the kitchen counter."

"I remember the bruise from the staple remover when we were on the desk."

"Now that we have a child, a staff and a brother, those days are few and far between."

Brenda sighed. "I guess you are right. I will never forget those days in the penthouse on the couch."

"Which one?"

Brenda took a deep breath and smiled. "Both. We seemed to use them relatively equally."

"You are right. We did not one to miss the out on any the excitement."

Brenda laughed. "Those days were so special."

Jax kissed her forehead. "Every day we are together is special."

Brenda snuggled deeper into his embrace as the memories of their early life together flashed through her mind. They were days of love and joy and they would be in their hearts forever.

J & J Jacks -- 10:30am

Julia slammed down the phone and quickly stood up. She had put up with this nonsense long enough. She marched down to Jerry's office.

"Good morning Francesca. Is he in?"

"Yes, he is on the phone and in a very foul mood."

"Good. That's makes two of us."

Julia opened the door to Jerry's office and entered the room. She slammed the door behind her. Jerry glared at her and then ended his telephone conversation.

"What the hell do you think you are doing?"

Julia stood in front of the desk with her hands on her hips. "I should ask you the same question."

"What are you talking about?"

"Don't feign ignorance with me. You deliberately set me up for that fiasco with the press."

Jerry shook his head. "I think your imagination is running wild again, Ms. Barrett."

"You were the one that said we could still work together. Obviously that is not the case."

Jerry stood up. "Listen up. You intentionally went behind my back in that press conference."

"You are insane. It was discussed weeks ago."

"I told you to cancel it two days ago."

"We would have looked like fools. This has nothing to do with the press conference and you know it."

Jerry looked at her. "What are you saying?"

"You are just upset because you did not get what you wanted. Things did not go your way so you are seeking some type of revenge."

"As in you? Julia, don't make me laugh. I will have you know that I can separate my business life from my private life unlike some people in this room."

"Give it up, Jerry."

"This coming from the person who refuses to let herself be happy."

"Excuse me if I disagree with you, your Royal Excellence, but you are deluding yourself."

"You are really one to talk, your Royal Majesty. You can't even admit how you feel and you are criticizing me. You love me Julia and it scares the hell out of you so much that you are taking it out on me. You are afraid to be happy."

"Stop saying that. It is not true."

"You can't even say the words, can you? You can't even look me in the eye and tell me that you don't love me. Your heart won't let you, will it?"

Julia was completely agitated now. "You are crazy."

"No, but you are right on one point. This working relationship has to end. You can turn your piece of Canadian Timber over to Andrew and Scott to handle. Your feelings are obviously preventing you from constructively working with me. I know Jax needs help on the Toronto and Hong Kong deals so I am sure he will appreciate the use of your services."

"That is perfectly acceptable to me. My only other hope is that I never have to speak to you again."

Jerry rolled his eyes. "You could never keep your mouth shut long enough for that to ever happen. Besides you will never be able to stay away from me, Julia. Your heart won't let you regardless of how you try to deny it."

"You are the most arrogant and egotistical man I have ever met."

"Coming from the most arrogant and egotistical woman I have met, that is really saying something."

Julia took a deep breath. "As much as I hate the idea of having to deal with you at all, we have a family that we share. I am not going to let you destroy that."

"You are the one that is bailing here, not me. You are the one that refuses to acknowledge her own heart. I an not going anywhere, you are the one who is running. I have no intention of allowing your inability to deal with the truth affect my family."

Julia walked toward the door. "Just stay away from me."

Jerry folded his arms. "I can do that but can you?"

Julia stormed out of the office and Jerry set back down in his chair. Why in the world did love have to be such a nightmare at times?

The Port Charles Grille -- 1:30pm

Julia and Jax were having lunch to discuss the Hong Kong merger. Jerry had informed Jax earlier that Julia was no longer working on the Canadian Timber deal. Jax had told Jerry that this was a mistake because Julia had so much background on the issues, but Jerry told Jax the decision had been made. Jax decided to stay out of it for the time being.

Things had been very strained between Jerry and Julia for a week now and Jax knew how much it was upsetting Brenda. Jax was convinced they had to stay out of it or risk making things worse. Brenda, of course, wanted to be right in the thick of things. On Monday, both Jax and Brenda had dealt with numerous problems at the office and were in bad moods when they came home. They had argued then over Jerry and Julia before realizing what a mistake it would be to let Jerry and Julia's problems affect them. They both agreed that Jerry and Julia had to work things out for themselves. Jax knew that Brenda was going to be disturbed about today's events.

Julia took a sip of her iced tea. "How was Brenda when you spoke to her last night?"

Jax grinned. "She was bubbling over like a soda fountain. She and Justus spent the morning on Capitol Hill and then went to tour the Ronald McDonald House affiliated with Children' Hospital."

Julia could not help smiling at the brightness on Jax's face when he talked about Brenda. "Is she still coming home tonight?"

"Yes, they are going back to some of the committee meetings and then going to NIH before they come back late tonight."

"I am sure you and Jillian miss her a great deal."

Jax sighed. "It has only been a day and a half but the house seems so empty without her."

"I know she misses you as well but I also understand how much Kanga's Kradle means to her."

"It does and I am so proud of her for all she has accomplished with it in a few short months. Her fundraising efforts have been unbelievable."

Julia laughed. "It seems that it is pretty difficult to deny my sister anything."

Jax sighed and smiled. "It is utterly impossible to refuse her anything that makes her happy."

"When she gets back, she will probably give us all a first hand account of every minute."

Jax chuckled. "Probably but her enthusiasm is so contagious, we will all be drawn into her web."

"She has changed so much from that little girl in pig tails I remember. Or maybe I have just changed the way I look at her."

"Brenda finally has the confidence to show the world what she is capable of. The potential was always there but she never allowed herself to see it."

Julia looked at Jax. "Until she met you."

"Not really. Almost two years ago, she decided that she would take a chance at happiness. She was willing to let me love her just as she was. It was that decision that she was worthy of happiness that enabled her to blossom into the incredible woman she could be. She took a risk then and put her heart on the line."

"Jax, she loves you so much. Maybe she did not two years ago, but she loves you with her whole heart now."

"I know. And as much as she loves me, I love her more."

"You both are very lucky to have each other."

Jax nodded. "That we are. It takes more than luck though. You have to work at it every day but all the struggles only make the good times that much sweeter."

"I must admit that the two of you certainly make all the efforts seem worth it."

"They are, Julia. The bottom line is that you have to allow yourself the opportunity to be happy. After you make that decision, the rest of it just happens."

Julia took a deep breath and sipped her tea. The Jacks brothers seemed to have cornered the market on discussions about happiness. A part of her started to think that she had never really allowed herself to be happy. She shook her head and tried to put that thought out of her mind. If that thought were true, then what about the rest of Jerry's allegations about her feelings? No, he could not be right. It was too risky of a proposition and she had to stop thinking about it. Unfortunately, that was much easier said than done.

The Jacks Residence -- 11:30pm

Brenda smiled as Justus drove through the front gates. She was home. The day was now even more perfect. Even the plane delay did not faze her. The trip to Washington had been extremely productive and she was eager to begin exploring some of the funding possibilities she had found. Justus had been instrumental in getting her meetings with the appropriate people.

Justus pulled the car into the circular driveway at the entrance to the house. "Home, safe and sound. I will just get your bag and say good night."

Brenda kissed Justus on the cheek. "That is not necessary. Just pop the trunk and I will get it. I want you to get home. Thank you so much for everything. None of this would have been possible without you."

"I would not say that. Brenda, you had them all eating out of your hands."

"But you had all the contacts. I guess we make a pretty good team."

"We certainly do."

Brenda opened the car door. "Thank you again. I will call you tomorrow about the follow-ups. Get some sleep."

"You too. Say hello to Jax for me. Good night."

Brenda picked up her garment bag from the trunk and walked to the front door. She opened the door and waved good-bye to Justus. The house was quiet and she was about ready to head upstairs when she saw a light on in the den. She left the garment bag in the foyer and walked down the hall.

As she neared the den, she heard the sound of the television. She walked through the doorway and her heart melted at the sight before her. There was Jax asleep on the sofa with Jillian asleep in his arms. He had covered her with the afghan from the sofa and his arms were wrapped tightly around the baby. It was the most beautiful sight Brenda had ever seen.

Brenda tiptoed into the room and sat on the coffee table in front of the sofa. She watched them and memorized every single detail of the picture before her. She was going to keep this image in her heart forever. The two people she loved the most in the world were there and she had missed them terribly. As she had sat in her hotel last night, she had thought about them and how her life had changed so much over the past two years. A little over two years ago, she did not even know who Jasper Jacks was. At that time, Brenda would have never believed it had someone told her this was what her life would be like two years later. Now Jax and the daughter they shared were the center of her life.

As Brenda gazed at the scene before her, Jax awoke and opened his eyes. Brenda smiled as she moved off the coffee table and knelt down beside the sofa. She brought her hand to Jax's face and caressed his cheek. "Hello my love."

"Tell me I am not dreaming and that you are home."

"You are not dreaming. I am back." Brenda leaned down and covered his lips with hers.

Jax's eyes sparkled at her. "I missed you so much. The usual brightness in this house was gone without you here."

"I missed you too and the baby."

"Jillian did not know what to do without you."

Brenda shook her head. "I see her Daddy is still spoiling her by letting her sleep in his arms rather than in her crib."

She was lonely without you and so was I so I thought we would be lonely together. Besides we were watching the Yankees game and I was explaining the rules of the game."

"Please tell me that she did not spend all of last night in our bed."

"No, she did not."

Brenda folded her arms in front of her. "Jax."

"She did not. It was only half the night."

Brenda laughed. "You are going to spoil her rotten."

"It is either you or her and you were not here so she reaped the rewards."

Brenda sat back on the coffee table. "Let me take her."

Jax handed Brenda the baby and then sat up. Brenda kissed Jillian and put her over her shoulder as she rubbed the baby's back. "Mommy's home precious and she missed you so much. I know Daddy took good care of you though even if you did not sleep in your crib."

Jax rested his hands on Brenda's legs. "How did things go today?"

Brenda was beaming. "Wonderfully. I can't wait to start implementing some of the ideas I was given."

Jax smiled. "I am so happy for you. I am also very proud of you. You are doing a wonderful thing, Brenda."

"Jax, you don't know how much that means to me. I can't explain to you how much your love and support have helped me."

"You will always have that, Brenda."

Brenda took Jax's hand. "Why don't we go upstairs and I'll put her to bed. Then you can hold me in your arms so you won't be lonely."

Jax brought Brenda's hand to his lips and kissed it. "That sounds perfect."

Jax stood up and took Brenda's hand to help her to her feet. He put his arm around her and she re-positioned Jillian on her shoulder. Jax picked up the garment bag and Brenda leaned against him as they walked up the stairs. They were all together again, right where they belonged now and forever.

The Jacks Residence -- 8:00am

Over the past week, life had become even more hectic. The tour had ended so Lois and Ned were back in town. Brenda and Lois had finalized all the details for the next week's recording of the band's new CD. Preparations for Lucy and Kevin's wedding were in full gear. Felicia had given her a bridal shower at the brownstone over the weekend and fittings were underway. Brenda had spent the day yesterday at Jacks Cosmetics working with Lucy and Chase on a photo lay-out for the newest line of products. A percentage of the sales from the new product line were being contributed to Kanga's Kradle so Lucy had put Brenda in charge of some of the promotion for the products.

Brenda and Justus were still very busy with the follow-up from their trip to Washington last week concerning Kanga's Kradle. This morning a meeting was scheduled with the hospital board about some new ideas for the project. Jax's merger deal in Hong Kong had developed some problems so he and Julia had worked most of the weekend to come up with some solutions. Canadian Timber was progressing but, as Jax had predicted, Julia's absence from the transaction was having some repercussions.

Jerry and Julia had gotten into a terrible argument again last week and neither had spoken to the other since. Brenda was very troubled by it but had not really had any time to dwell on it. On the homefront, Jillian was starting to get into trouble. She had figured out that her rolling over trick could be used to get her from one end of the room to the other. She had been on a blanket on the floor in the den last night and had rolled across the room to the CD cabinet. There, she decided to pull out an entire row of CDs before Brenda got to her. Over the weekend, she had gotten to Jax's newest kayaking magazine and had ripped it apart before he reached her.

Jillian was in her high chair eating cheerios and banging on the tray with plastic measuring spoons. Brenda was looking over some notes for the board meeting today while Jax was reviewing the stock quotes from yesterday. Jerry walked into the dining room and joined them at the table.

Jerry picked up a bagel. "I don't believe that weather out there."

Brenda looked up from her notes. "It is terrible. There is nothing worse than fog and rain. The temperatures have dropped fifteen degrees from yesterday. I hate the idea that Julia is flying to Los Angeles in this weather."

Jax looked at Brenda. "I am glad that you have Virgil because the roads are terrible. The radio traffic reporters say that there are accidents everywhere."

Brenda handed Jillian the spoons the baby had tossed into Brenda's lap. "I am glad we decided to have Maggie take care of the baby here today instead of bringing her to the office. This weather would certainly not help Jillian's cold."

Jerry passed Brenda the butter. "Ready to face Eddie and the other stiffs at the GH board meeting this morning?"

Brenda laughed. "Yes. Maybe I could use that description in my opening remarks to the board."

Jax looked up from the newspaper. "It never stopped Jerry."

Jerry gave Jax a phony laugh. "As opposed to you who tries to charm and entice your way in through the back door."

"It works for me."

"Well, I guess one would not expect any more savvy than that from a life size Ken doll."

Jax shrugged his shoulders. "Do I detect a little envy there? Is the barreling through the front door technique failing you now? Are you worried about the meeting for the satellite deal this morning?"

Jerry rolled his eyes. "When hell freezes over. I just have always found it interesting that you have had to rely on your charm to succeed in business. I do not have the same problem."

Jax grinned. "Thank God. If you had to depend on your charm, your career as a corporate raider would have been the shortest on record."

Brenda cleared her throat. "Time out boys. Go to your mutual corners."

Jerry elbowed Jax and pointed at Brenda. "She sounds like she has been taking lessons from Lady Jane."

Brenda nodded. "As a matter of fact, I have. She appointed me surrogate mother for times when you two get a little carried away."

Jerry smirked. "Surrogate mother? My God Jax, do you realize you are sleeping with your mother?"

Brenda kicked him in the shin. "Ouch! What are you wearing, stiletto heels?"

She grinned. "As a matter of fact, yes."

Jax laughed and Jerry rolled his eyes. "What are you laughing at? You are the one that is married to her."

"Yes, but I avoid doing or saying anything which would merit the use of a heel."

"You may want to think twice about that. I mean a woman who gets her kicks out of causing pain and suffering may be kind of exciting. You know -- whips, chains, stiletto heels, I can see Brenda now."

"Ouch!" This time the kick was administered to the other shin.

Brenda looked up from her report again. "Now you have a matched set of bruises. Do you want to guess where the next kick is felt?"

Jax laughed so hard that he choked on his orange juice. Jerry simply shook his head at the two of them. "You both are nuts, no wonder you get along so well."

Brenda smiled. "Thank you. We appreciate your interest and support."

Jax put down the newspaper. "Yes, we truly value your praise."

Brenda looked at her watch. "I better finish getting ready and get out of here. Maggie should be here any minute."

Jax stood up. "I have to get out of here as well. I'll bring Jillian up."

"Thanks honey." Brenda stood up and looked at Jerry. "Jerry, have a good day. See you this evening. Just remember my heels will never be that far away."

Jax lifted Jillian from the high chair. "Yes, and you can tell us all about your charming bulldozer tactics with Satellite USA when you come back to the office this afternoon."

"Good riddance to both of you. Now, I can sit here in peace."

Jax reached the door. "Highly doubtful. You have to listen to the decay and decomposition of those old brain cells and bones."

Jerry shook his head again. The rumors were true. His family was really nuts. Poor Jillian did not stand a chance among them.

J & J Jacks -- 1:00pm

Jax's private line rang and he picked up the receiver to hear Brenda's voice at the other end.

"Hello honey."

"Hey sweetheart. How did the board meeting go?"

"Things could not have gone better. The Board wants me to look into a fundraiser for the housing facility that GH could support like it does the Nurses' Ball."

Jax smiled. "I told you that they were no match for you."

Brenda leaned back in her chair and beamed. "You certainly did. Oh, but the other news is that three other hospitals have called Alan to find out more about the project. These other hospitals are interested in using GH as a test case to determine if the project is feasible since these would be individual facilities rather than a nationwide program like the Ronald McDonald House."

"Well, I guess you will just have to get used to more accolades and praise."

Brenda sighed. "Only if it works. If it does not, then three other locations will scrap the idea."

"Brenda, it will work. It is working. Give yourself some credit."

"It's just that now the pressure even seems greater."

"Enough with negative thinking. I think this is reason to celebrate. What if I take my wife to lunch?"

"That is a wonderful idea but Jax the weather is awful. It was hailing when Virgil dropped me off a few minutes ago. Can we eat in?"

"Whatever you want to do. You are the guest of the honor."

Brenda thought for a second. "How about pizza?"

"Fine. Your place or mine?"

Brenda smirked. "Yours. Your couch is more comfortable."

Jax laughed. "My, my, Mrs. Jacks, what do you have in mind?"

"Since you are taking me to lunch, I certainly expect dessert to be included."

Jax grinned. "Why, of course. I will call and order and you can meet me here in a half hour or so."

"See you then. I love you."

"I love you too. Bye."

Forty-five minutes later, Jax's head rested in Brenda's lap as he reclined on the couch. With one hand, Brenda was feeding him the extra mushrooms and green peppers from her slice of pizza. She had loosened his tie and unbuttoned his shirt and was stroking his chest with her other hand.

Brenda leaned her head against the wall behind the couch. "This is the life. For a few minutes, we can close the door and lock out all the problems of the world."

Jax took her hand in his and kissed each of her fingers. "You are right. All we need is Jillian."

"I called home before I came over and Maggie said she went down okay for her nap so maybe she is feeling a little better."

"Hopefully. I would hate to see her lose any time on her destruction rampage."

Brenda shook her head. "I remember how Lois told me that once Brooke started moving, it was a whole new world. I see what she means. When Jillian starts crawling, it will never be the same."

"I am sure you are right. She already finds every cubby hole and every corner."

"We will be in for it. She is so determined."

"Would you expect her to be otherwise? Her genes doomed her from the start."

Brenda sighed. "I know, she will be hell on wheels just like I was. I guess this my punishment for being such a troublemaker as a child."

"If Jillian is like her mother, she should consider herself lucky. She already has your beauty."

"Well, she certainly has your charm so she will have some saving grace."

Jax laughed. "Jerry would disagree on that point."

"Sometimes I wonder how your mother ever put up with the two of you."

"Liquor and lots of it."

"Jax, stop. I mean you two are so different in some ways but in other ways, you are so much alike."

"We certainly gave Mum a run for her money at times but overall, things worked out."

"I guess we will just see the differences in our children when our next baby comes."

Jax sat up and looked at Brenda. His eyes were as big as saucers. "What did you say?"

The look on his face melted Brenda's heart. "No, I don't mean we are having our next baby now. I mean when we decide the time is right. We need to enjoy Jillian now and get her through her first year of life to ensure we have not completely failed in our parental duties before we inflict the two of us on another child."

"You know how I feel. I would be happy with a house full of children of ours. I am ready whenever you are."

Brenda smiled at him as she traced his jawline with her finger. "I love you. In the meantime, I think we should keep our procreation skills in order."

"What a fine idea, Mrs. Jacks."

Jax cupped Brenda's face with his hands and pulled her head to him. Brenda wrapped her arms around his neck as their lips united. They drank in the taste of each other and Jax eased Brenda down on the couch as a knock was heard at the door.

Brenda ran her hand through her hair and rebuttoned her blouse. Jax buttoned his shirt and straightened his tie. He walked to the door and unlocked it. He opened it to find Addie on the other side.

"I am sorry, Mr. Jacks, but there is an emergency with your brother. Amy Vining from General Hospital is one line 2."

Brenda jumped up from the couch as Jax hurried to the phone on his desk.

"Amy, this is Jax. "What has happened?"

Brenda watched Jax as he listened to Amy. Finally he spoke again. "Fine. We are on our way. Thank you Amy."

Brenda felt herself shaking. "What happened?"

"There was an accident on Highway 5. Jerry just arrived by helicopter. That is all they know now except that he is unconscious."

A tear fell from the corner of Brenda's eye. "Jax, don't worry. He is in very capable hands."

Jax picked up the phone. "I am going to call my parents and then we need to go."

"I will get my purse from the office and meet you back here. I'll call Lois from the car to alert her to be on standby to relieve Maggie if necessary." Brenda stopped in her tracks as she reached the door. "Oh God, I have to get in contact with Julia in Los Angeles."

"We can call her cell phone when we get to the car. Meet me at the elevators."

Jax met her at the elevator and Brenda put her arms around him as they waited. Everything had changed in a matter of minutes. The real world had just invaded the private sanctuary they had just shared. Unfortunately, locked doors could not prevent reality from intruding.

General Hospital -- 7:00pm

General Hospital was a flurry of activity. The terrible weather had caused numerous accidents and the emergency room was packed. Jax and Brenda had been in the waiting room for hours. Jerry had not yet regained consciousness and a head injury was suspected. Tony Jones had been assigned to Jerry's case and was running numerous tests to determine the severity of his injuries.

Brenda had spoken to Lois about relieving Maggie. Ned went to the house to pick up Jillian to spend the night at the gate house. Jax had spoken to his parents several times and John and Jane were on their way to the airport to fly to Port Charles. Scott had come by the hospital to lend his support but Jax had sent him home to be with Serena. Jax promised to call him as soon as there was any real news.

Brenda watched Jax as he paced the hallways. She was giving him space for the time being. Brenda had spoken to Julia and Julia had been very upset. Brenda worried that her sister was finally admitting to herself how much Jerry meant to her and that now Julia was panicking that it may be too late. Julia was catching the last flight back to Port Charles and would come straight to the hospital from the airport.

Jax finally came over to the lounge area and sat next to Brenda on the couch. Brenda moved into his lap and wrapped her arms around him.

"Just know I am here for you, honey. I love you."

Jax struggled with his words. "You are always there for me. I remember being in the same spot eighteen months ago and you were there for me and my family, even when I had no right to expect you to be. This place is just a reminder of Dad and the whole Miranda mess."

Brenda shook her head. "We don't need to talk about that."

"It feels like it was yesterday. I am so sorry if the memories are too painful."

Brenda lifted Jax's chin so that he was looking right into her eyes. "Listen to me, I don't want you spending one second worrying about me. They are just memories, they can't touch us. Your Dad is well and we are here together. Whatever happened then was necessary to get us to where we are today. I don't want you to give it one more thought. It is the past and it is over."

Jax smiled for the first time since he had received the call about Jerry. "I couldn't do this without you. I love you Brenda Barrett Jacks with all of my heart."

Brenda rested her head on his shoulder and she then saw Tony come out of the examining room. "Jax, here's Tony."

Jax helped Brenda off his lap and they both stood up Tony reached them.

"Hello again Jax and Brenda. As I told you when I first examined Jerry, we suspected a head injury. The cat scan and x-rays have confirmed that."

Jax swallowed hard. "How extensive is the injury?"

"It is serious. There is some bleeding that we are going to have to stop. We are going to operate as soon as an operating room becomes available."

Brenda felt like her stomach was doing back flips. "What happens after that?"

Tony spoke softly. "We wait."

Jax took a deep breath. "Wait for what?"

"To see how he responds after surgery."

Jax's eyes showed his confusion and concern. "What does that mean?"

"Jax, I am not going to mislead you. Your brother is critical right now. We have to relieve the pressure in his brain and then hope he responds to the treatment to reduce the swelling. Only after that happens, will we know if there is any permanent damage."

Jax felt like the ground was falling from beneath his feet. "When will we know anything concrete?"

"The next forty-eight hours are crucial. Have you spoken to your parents?"

"Yes, they should be on the their way within the hour."

"Good. He is going to need all the support he can get."

Brenda tightly gripped Jax hand. "Can we see him?"

"For a moment. He is being prepped right now for surgery. I will see you both once he is in recovery."

Tony walked away and Brenda hugged Jax. "Jax, he is going to get through this. Why don't you go see him? I'll be right here."

"I'm going to call my parents again and tell them that he is going into surgery now. Would you go see him?"

Brenda stroked his hand with her thumb. "Of course."

Jax's voice wavered. "Brenda, don't leave him."

Brenda felt her breath catch in her throat as she watched Jax faltering. "I won't. I promise."

Jax kissed Brenda on the forehead and she walked into the examining room.

Brenda walked over to the gurney and picked up Jerry's hand. "Hey, it's Brenda." Brenda brushed the tears from the corners of her eyes. "Listen mister, I know how you crave attention but this is a bit much even from you. I am still wearing my stiletto heels so I suggest you make a speedy recovery or else, I won't be responsible for my actions."

Brenda continued to stroke his hand. "You promised Jillian you would take her to Australia to show her the kangaroos. I expect you to keep that promise."

Brenda saw Jax coming toward the door and quickly brushed away her tears. "Jerry, Jax is here."

Jax walked over to the gurney and rested his hand on Jerry's leg. At that moment, Jerry did not look the strong and powerful big brother that Jax had admired his entire life. Now Jerry looked weak and powerless.

"Jerry, it's me. Brenda is also here and Mum and Dad are on their way. You always had to have an audience. I want you to listen to me for the first time in your life. I am not taking over that ridiculous satellite deal for you so you just better get over this martyr act and get back to work. None of us are impressed."

Two orderlies entered the examining room. "I am sorry but we have to take him now. Dr. Jones is waiting."

Jax took a deep breath and fought back his emotion. "Jerry, we will be waiting. You still owe me for the racquetball championship and I am going to collect. We will be right here."

The orderlies wheeled Jerry through the doors and Brenda buried her head into Jax's chest. Life had spun out of control but the strength of their foundation remained untouched. They held onto one another for dear life knowing that whatever happened, their love would see them through.

Thursday, April 30, 1998
General Hospital -- 9:00am

It had been thirty-six hours since Jerry had undergone surgery and he had still not regained consciousness. Tony had relieved the pressure but the cat-scan still showed considerable swelling. Besides the head injury, Jerry also had two broken ribs, a fractured wrist and several cuts and bruises. John and Jane had arrived early yesterday morning and Julia had flown in from Los Angeles at about the same time.

Jax had not left the hospital or slept since he had arrived at GH two days ago. Monica had given the Jacks family the use of her office and shower area which was a godsend. Jax had finally convinced Brenda to go home late last night so that she could go get some rest and go to the gate house this morning to spend some time with Jillian.

Brenda had tried to convince Julia to come back to the house with her but Julia was adamant about staying. There was no doubt in Brenda's mind that this crisis with Jerry had forced Julia to realize how strong her feelings were for him. Jane had sat with Julia yesterday afternoon and held her hand. There were no words spoken but the communication between them was evident.

Jerry was in the intensive care unit. Everyone had taken turns sitting with Jerry. Jane recited some of the bedtime stories she had told to him when he was growing up while John spoke of the first business ventures Jerry had handled for J & J Jacks. Jax spoke of their friendly and not so friendly athletic competitions over the years while Brenda chatted about his times with Jillian. Julia spent her time with Jerry trying to coax him back to consciousness with her insults and ridicule. She wanted him to fight back but there was no counterattack.

Brenda walked off the elevator with a tray of coffee and bags of muffins from Ruby. She headed to the lounge where she saw everyone but John who was sitting with Jerry at the time. Jax stood up from the couch as she approached and grabbed the tray and bags from her and put them on the table in front of them.

Jax hugged her and then kissed her forehead. "How is my little girl?"

Brenda took his hand at they sat down on the couch. "She misses her Daddy but otherwise she is fine. How are you?"

"Muddling through. There still has been no change and Dad is sitting with him now."

"I have some coffee and I stopped at Kelly's to get some of Ruby's muffins for everyone."

Jane smiled. "That was very kind of you but I am not hungry right now."

Brenda shook her head. "Jane, you need to eat something. It won't do you or Jerry any good if you get sick."

Jax grabbed a cup of coffee and a muffin and handed them to Jane. "Mum, Brenda is right. The last thing we need is you in the hospital as well."

Jane smiled slightly. "Listen to the two of you, parenthood has certainly made you authoritative."

Brenda laughed. "You are right and to take it one step further, I am going to go in and tell John to come out here and eat. I will sit with Jerry."

Brenda kissed Jax softly on the lips and patted Jane's hand and then walked into the intensive care unit to relieve John.

Jane looked at Jax. "She is one incredible woman."

Jax nodded. "I know Mum. Without her, I would have nothing."

The morning hours passed and Tony ordered a new series of tests on Jerry. Everyone was even more apprehensive since Jerry's condition still had not changed. Brenda was worried about Jax. She could see the pain and sadness in his eyes. She also knew that he was very worried about his parents.

Brenda called Lois to check on Jillian and then walked over to the lounge and rested her hand on Jax's knee. "It is a beautiful day, why don't you come outside with me and take a little walk?"

"I think I had better stay here."

"Honey, you need a break. Please. If there is some news, we will be right outside."

Jax sighed. "Okay, you win."

Jax and Brenda walked through the main entrance of the hospital and sat on the benches amidst the beds of spring flowers. Brenda held Jax's and rested her head against his shoulder.

"Jax, he is going to pull through this. He is too hard headed not to."

Jax's eyes reflected a look of fear. "Most of me believes that completely but there is this tiny piece gnawing at me and it reminds me of all things we never did and never said."

Brenda sat up. "Don't do this to yourself. He will be fine. You are not going to lose him, Jax, none of us are."

A tear rolled down Jax's cheek. "I don't know if I have ever told him that I loved him."

Brenda brushed away Jax's tear as her own eyes brimmed with tears. "Honey, he knows you love him. Believe me, he knows."

Brenda took Jax in her arms and held him as tightly as she could. They cried together, gaining strength from each other. They knew that they would get though this together.

General Hospital -- 3:00pm

Jerry had still not regained consciousness and Tony was becoming concerned. The latest test results showed that Jerry was not responding as quickly as Tony had hoped. This ordeal was completely exhausting for everyone, especially for John and Jane. Jax worried about John's own health and finally Jax and Brenda had convinced John and Jane to go to Monica's office to get some rest.

Jax was sitting with Jerry as Brenda and Julia sat in the lounge. Julia had been very quiet since her arrival back from Los Angeles and Brenda had given her plenty of space. Now Brenda decided that Julia had spent enough time alone with her thoughts and determined that it was time to get Julia to share some of her feelings.

Brenda sat down on the couch next to Julia and took her hand. "He is going to pull through this, Julia."

Julia spoke in a whispered rasp. "It's been forty-eight hours since the accident, he has not even regained consciousness."

"Julia, I meant what I said, Jerry is going to be fine. He is too arrogant and determined not to be. This is Jerry, we are talking about."

Julia took a deep breath. "Even he is not invincible. He looks so vulnerable lying in that bed."

Brenda grabbed hold of both of Julia's hands. "He is young and strong and obstinate. Jerry is not going to let this stop him." She looked at Julia. "Why don't you tell me what you are thinking about? Don't keep it all bottled up inside you."

Tears crept from the corners of Julia's eyes. "We had that terrible fight last week and I have not spoken to him since. I said so many horrible things to him then. What if they were the last..."

Brenda interrupted her. "Don't even think that. You will have time to tell him what you want to say to him. There will be time for apologies later. Right now, he needs our positive thinking more than anything else."

Julia wiped away her tears. "You're right. This is not helping anyone."

Jax walked through the doors and approached Brenda and Julia. Brenda stood up and hugged him. "Your parents are still in Monica's office."

Jax sighed. "Good. Hopefully they are getting some rest."

Brenda caressed Jax's cheek. "I will go sit with Jerry now."

Brenda walked into the intensive care unit as Jax sat down next to Julia on the couch. He stroked Julia's hand. "How are you doing?"

One look at Jax's sad, concerned face was all it took for Julia to fall apart. Tears began flowing and Jax put his arms around her. "It's okay, Julia. We are all going to get through this."

Julia's sobs finally subsided and Jax passed her some kleenex. "I'm sorry. This is the last thing you needed, a blubbering idiot crying on your shoulder."

Jax gave her a slight smile. "What are families for? Besides, I know how upset Jerry would be if I wasn't lending you a shoulder."

Julia slowly exhaled. "I don't know about that. I don't think I am at the top of his list right now."

Jax shook his head. "He loves you, Julia. I wasn't sure I would ever say that about my brother, but it is true."

Julia ran her hand through her hair. "I know and he is even arrogant about that."

Jax laughed. "Well, he wouldn't be Jerry if he weren't."

Julia smiled but the look of sadness quickly reappeared on her face.

Jax took Julia's hand. "You will have the chance to deal with that arrogant attitude of his again very soon. Then you can say what you need to say."

Julia smiled and leaned back against the couch as thoughts floated around in her head. She wondered how everyone had seemed to know how she was feeling before she did. It was going to take a while to get used to this, but she could no longer deny what was in her heart. Like it or not, she was in love with Jerry Jacks. Nothing was ever going to be the same again.

General Hospital -- 10:00pm

Tony had left the lounge area a few hours ago after speaking to everyone about the results of his latest examination of Jerry. There had been no change and it had been forty-eight hours since the surgery. Tony had informed everyone that if the situation did not change in the next twelve hours, he was going to take Jerry back to into surgery. Tony wanted to avoid this if at all possible because such a procedure could cause further complications. Jerry was also still in a highly weakened state and any surgical procedure would be a risk.

Jane was crumbling. She could not bear to think of the pain and suffering Jerry was going through. Jax was walking with her through the hallways trying to soothe her nerves.

"Jax, if anything happens to him, I don't think I can bear it."

"Mum, we have to believe that everything possible is being done. He will pull through this as good as new, or as bad as new since we are talking about Jerry."

Jane sighed. "This can't be happening now, he is at peace for the first time in his life. He never stayed in one place for more than a month. I always thought he was running from something but now I know he was running to something. He found it and he is this close to getting it and now this."

Jax put his arm around Jane. "You now what a ruthless competitor Jerry is. He is going to beat this. There is no way that he will surrender."

Brenda was sitting in the lounge with John listening to him talk about the early days in Australia, the terrible times that Jerry saw when Jax was too young to understand.

John took a deep breath. "From the first day after I found the oil, Jerry was hell bent on getting everything he wanted. No obstacle was too large. The bigger the challenge, the better. It was different than Jax. Jax loved the challenge too but Jerry was almost obsessed with it."

Brenda looked at John. "I guess that is why he fell in love with Julia, there could not have been more of a challenge than that."

John chuckled. "That may have been his toughest and most important challenge yet."

Brenda stroked John's arm. "Jerry will reap the rewards of conquering that challenge. He is going to bask in his victory. There is nothing that will prevent him from that, John. He has come too far to do otherwise."

In the intensive care unit, Julia watched the monitors. She realized that she had become so accustomed to the beeping of the machines that she no longer even heard them. "Jeremiah Jeb Jacks, stop being so pigheaded and wake up now. What are you waiting for -- an invitation from the President? You know I am not going back to the Canadian Timber deal so don't think this will change my mind."

Julia pulled a chair to the side of Jerry's bed. She was exhausted and the strength to fight the feelings of dread was gone. Julia felt as if her heart was being ripped out of her chest as she watched him. He looked like a frightened little boy lying there with IVs and monitors surrounding him.

Julia took his hand. "Jerry, it's Julia. We need you to wake up now. Can you do that for me?"

Her tears began to flow again. "Please wake up for me. There is so much I need to say to you. There are so many things that I left unfinished."

The tears were now sobs as she continued. "I need to talk to you. I need for you to open your eyes. I can't let it end this way for us. You have to know the truth."

Julia felt the words catch in her throat as she tried to say them out loud for the first time. "You have to know that I do love you. God help me but I do. Please wake up."

Julia sobbed as she rested her head on Jerry's chest. She then heard a groan and lifted her head. Jerry's eyes moved and she almost jumped out of her chair. She tried to speak but no words would come.

His eyes fluttered and he moaned. His eyes then opened and he whispered to her. "I told you that you loved me."

Part of her wanted to punch him right in the mouth while the other part wanted to jump for joy. She chose the latter.

"Jerry, I'll be right back. I need to go get the doctor and your family."

Jerry grabbed her hand. "Say it again."

Julia slowly exhaled. "I love you, Jerry Jacks. Now let go of me."

Julia hurried into the lounge and gave the family the good news and a nurse paged Tony.

The family hurried into Jerry's room. Jane's tears prevented her from speaking so she took Jerry's hand in hers as John spoke. "Boy, you nearly scared the wits out of your mother and me."

Jerry struggled to speak. "I am not going anywhere. I could not just leave you with the life-sized Ken doll over there?"

Jax laughed. "We will see how many appearance jokes you make after you see what a great shaving job they did on that head of yours. You and Demi Moore look very similar now."

Jerry whispered. "Jasper, you are just jealous."

Brenda shook her head. "That is enough from both of you. I still have those heels, remember?"

Tony came in and examined Jerry. He announced that the crisis was over and Jerry was finally responding to the treatment. Right now, Jerry needed rest and lots of it.

Jerry was fighting sleep but no one was ready to let him out of their sight just yet. Jax put his arms on Brenda's shoulders and John put his arm around Jane as they stood there around the bed. Julia sat on bed next to Jerry and stroked his hair as he drifted off to sleep again. They had all found the strength to get through this and Jerry had found the will to survive. They were all together again and they knew why. Love was the answer and it had brought about their miracle.
