Chapter 3
Haunted by the Past

The Jacks' Residence -- 8:00am

Sunshine gleamed through the skylight over Jax and Brenda's bed in the master suite. Jax was awake but Brenda was still in a blissful sleep. Jax took a deep breath and closed his eyes momentarily as he took in his surroundings. It was their first morning in their new home. The woman of his dreams was asleep beside him, carrying his unborn child. The skylight over the bed created a frame for the rays of the sun to awaken them each day and the glow of the moon and the twinkling of the stars to lull them to sleep each night. Memories of the previous night then filtered through his mind as he recalled making love to Brenda under the glow of the moon and the stars. Their lovemaking was so incredible now -- the passion was as strong as ever but now their bond was deeper and their connection so much more gentle, tender and loving. Jax had never felt so fulfilled both physically and emotionally. He did not know where he ended and where Brenda began.

Jax gently placed his hand on Brenda's abdomen. He was amazed at the miracle that was occurring inside her. Brenda's once flat stomach was now swollen from the growth of the child within her. They had heard and seen the baby's heart beating. It was real. Jax then began gently stroking Brenda's abdomen and speaking to the baby in a whisper as to not awaken Brenda.

"Hello, little one. It's your daddy. I love you and your mommy more than anything in this world. You are going to love your mommy too when you meet her. She is so beautiful that sometimes I have to remember to breathe when I look at her. Your mommy loves you so much already. I promise to take care of you and your mommy forever."

Brenda had awakened to hear Jax's words but she kept her eyes closed so as not to interrupt the moment. Jax then gently rested his head on Brenda's stomach for a moment before kissing it and then getting out of bed to head for the shower. Brenda managed to remain composed until she heard the bathroom door close. Silent tears of happiness then began to fall. She couldn't imagine what it would be like to have the life that their child was going to have. A child with two parents that loved it and who would be there to protect and care for it always. It was a life that Brenda never had but had always dreamed about. She was now going to be able to provide such a life for her own child. They were going to be a real family. It was a dream come true.

The Outback -- 1:00pm

Keesha and A.J. were having lunch and discussing the administrative overload that the Charles Street Foundation was encountering due to the relocation of J & J Jacks to the area. The staff could not keep up with the increase in the grant applications and work permit requests. Now that Justus was busy with ELQ, Robin was at Yale and Keesha was at the police academy, there was an immediate need for more volunteers. J & J Jacks relocation to Port Charles was a hot news topic. Newspaper articles ran every day with different angles of the story and features on the Jacks family. Miranda overheard a good portion of Keesha and A.J.'s conversation and knew from the press reports that Jax would be spending a lot of time at the Foundation offices while the plants and warehouses were being renovated. She decided this would present her with a perfect opportunity.

"Hi, Keesha and A.J. I could not help overhearing part of your conversation and I want to offer my services to the Foundation."

"Miranda, that is great. Are you sure you have the time?"

"Yes, Keesha. I am only working part-time here and I need to do something for the Port Charles community since I have adopted it as my home at least for the present time."

"That is great. Why don't you come by the offices tomorrow and I will show the ropes and we can figure up some type of schedule."

"I'll see you then."

Miranda then went to the bar and smiled thinking of the numerous opportunities she would now have to see Jax without the presence of his doe-eyed wife.

The Jacks' Residence -- 5:00pm

Lila and Brenda were in the den enjoying each other's company over a cup of tea. Lila loved the interior decorating decisions Brenda had made for the house and was very happy for Brenda's newfound happiness. Lila asked her is she had made any household staffing decisions and Brenda explained that interviews were scheduled for the end of the week.

Brenda then showed Lila the pictures from the ultrasound and Lila admitted how she missed having young children in the house since both Dillon and Brooke were living away from Port Charles. Brenda promised Lila that she would be the honorary grandmother to she and Jax's children. The phone then rang and as Brenda answered it, she heard a dial tone. She told Lila that was the third time that had happened today and evidently someone must be trying to reach the person who formerly had their new telephone number.

Reginald arrived to pick up Lila as Jax was pulling into the driveway. Jax and Reginald entered the house together. "Lila, how nice to see you."

"I have just had a lovely visit with Brenda. I must compliment you on your taste in art. Brenda has shown me some of the works and your art collection is most impressive."

"Well, that is quite a compliment coming from you. Thank you very much. Now, tell me, has Edward gotten over the shock of having the enemy move into the neighborhood?"

"No, but pay him no mind. Sometimes he leaves one no choice but to ignore him. Well, Reginald we should be off and leave these two young people to their privacy. Good-bye Jax and Brenda."

"Good-bye, Lila. We will see you soon."

Luke's Club -- 7:00pm

Sonny was sitting at the bar when Jason and Joseph entered the club. Jason told Sonny he had some information so they headed back to the office for some privacy.

"Well, Brenda is looking for a housekeeper and a gardener and is going to conduct some interviews on Thursday and Friday."

"Okay, you know what to do, right?

"Yes, we send a couple applicants to the employment agency tomorrow looking for these positions in order to get them onto the Jacks' estate."

"Correct. Then they check out the security system and note the potential locations where a breach of security is likely. I want both the interior and exterior of the house inspected. Also have them keep their eyes and ears open for any suspicious activity."

"Okay, we got it. I'll keep you posted as I hear from Benny."

The Jacks' Residence -- 8:00pm

Jax was reviewing the latest cost projections for the relocation of J & J Jacks while Brenda was in the kitchen trying to prepare dinner. She had decided she should be able to handle omelets, bacon and pancakes. She figured if restaurants could serve breakfast all day long so could she. Unfortunately, things were not working out as planned. She has gone through half a dozen eggs and still could not fold the eggs correctly for the omelets; the pancakes were not rising and the bacon was broiled beyond recognition. The kitchen looked as though a cyclone had hit it as flour, eggs and milk decorated the linoleum floor. Suddenly, smoke began pouring from the broiler and the smoke detector began sounding. Jax ran into the kitchen and shut the broiler to extinguish the grease fire while Brenda opened the terrace doors and waved a wet dish towel in the air to dissipate the smoke. The smoke detector finally stopped blaring and the chaos was halted.

Jax surveyed his surroundings and shook his head. "One person did all this."

Brenda had her head in her hands. "Jax, I am so sorry. Things just got a tad out of control."

Jax was desperately trying to suppress his laughter. "We have barely been here 24 hours and you are trying to burn the place down. I do not think the insurance company would think too kindly of that."

"That's enough, Jax. This is not funny."

"You are telling me. Look at this place. It looks like a demolition crew came through it."

Brenda had now had enough of his sarcasm and took the wet dish towel she was holding and swatted him with it. "Stop it."

He walked over to the stove and looked at the remains of the bacon. "Look at this bacon or should I say burnt offerings. Have you read that charcoal is good for the baby?"

"That's it. You are going to pay dearly for that remark, Mr. Jacks." She then began relentlessly swatting him with the dish towel. He backed up until he was pinned against the counter. At that moment, Jax grabbed both her arms, turned around and lifted her up so that she was sitting on the counter facing him.

"You are going to pay dearly for this, Mrs. Jacks." He then pulled her to him and began tracing the outline of her lips with his tongue. She moaned and surrendered her lips to him. He lifted her from the counter as she wrapped her arms around his neck and her legs around his hips. Their lips never broke contact as he lowered her to the floor where they then made passionate love amidst the remnants of their proposed dinner.

The Jacks' Residence -- Noon

Lois, Gloria and Brooke had arrived earlier this morning for their weekend visit. Lois immediately went over to Brenda to pat her stomach and greet her godchild-to-be. "You look too incredible for words, Bren. Let me look at you. Holy Toledo, look at the size of your chest."

Gloria shook her head. "Lois Marie."

Brenda was laughing at the two of them. "I know. It's ridiculous. Jax says that I am going to tip over at this rate."

Lois rolled her eyes. "I'm sure Jax is really suffering with your new look."

"Only every morning and every night." Both Lois and Brenda then begin to laugh and Gloria told Brooke that she was too young to be part of this discussion.

Both Lois and Gloria were impressed with the house and its grounds. The living room and dining furniture had been delivered and the three women had driven the delivery men crazy as they tried to determine the perfect arrangement for the furniture. Lois was unpacking Brenda's clothes and shoes and Gloria was organizing Brenda's kitchen cabinets and drawers to create an efficient, working environment in the kitchen. Gloria had also promised to give Brenda some cooking lessons before she and Lois returned to Bensonhurst.

Brenda was conducting interviews for the housekeeper and gardener positions. This afternoon, she would narrow the list to the two top candidates per position and then schedule follow-up interviews for Monday so that Jax could meet with the candidates.

Charles Street Foundation -- 2:00pm

Jax and Justus had just completed a conference call with John and Jerry about the status of the renovation of the warehouses and plant. A portion of the plant was being refurbished to serve as the executive offices of J and J Jacks. Until then, the Foundation's offices were being used for the J & J Jacks' office. Lee Baldwin then entered the offices to join in on the discussions. The next undertaking was to fill the position of corporate counsel for the Port Charles office. Since the relocation and renovation efforts would require full-time legal services for the next several months, the corporate counsel would need to reside in Port Charles. Jax asked Justus and Lee if they had any candidates for the position. Lee told Jax that he had someone in mind who had a plethora of experience with the city council and industry of Port Charles and specifically the Charles Street area. Jax asked for the candidate's name and Lee replied, "Scott Baldwin."

Justus was taken aback at Lee's response. He thought Scott was eminently qualified but wondered if he would consider returning to Port Charles. Lee informed Jax and Justus that Scott had recently spoken of returning to Port Charles in order to provide his daughter, Serena, a more stable home life. Jax told Lee that he had met Scott on one previous occasion and knew of his expertise in the business field. Lee told Jax that he would be in contact with Scott to determine his interest in the position. Lee and Justus then headed to an ELQ meeting and left Jax to review the recent financial projections for the project.

Keesha and Miranda then entered the office. Jax was surprised to see Miranda. Keesha explained that Miranda was now volunteering her services to review the grant applications and process the permits. Keesha handed Miranda the latest stack of applications and then excused herself to get to her class at the Police Academy.

"Well, this is a surprise, Jax. I did not realize that you were using the Foundation as an office."

"Yes, I will be using it as an office until the renovation work has been completed. I did not realize that you were volunteering your services here."

"I thought it was the least I could do since Port Charles is my home now. It is a great cause and I have the time. I guess we will be seeing a lot of each other."

Luke's Club -- 5:00pm

Jason and Sonny were meeting in the office. Jason informed Sonny of the findings concerning the security at the Jacks' residence. "The estate is bordered by stone walls and electronic gates at both entrances. There is a sophisticated security system monitoring both the house and garage areas. There are security cameras positioned at the driveway, gazebo, tennis courts, pool and cabana. The terrace entrances on the ground floor and the balcony entrances on the second floor present the most potential for a security breach."

Jason then received a phone call from Benny. One of Sonny's contacts, Patrick Cleary, had been named as one of the top two candidates for the gardener position. An interview was scheduled for Monday. Jason hung up the phone and gave Sonny the information.

"Okay, we are one step closer. Make sure Cleary is on his toes on Monday. He is certainly qualified for the job."

"One more thing, Sonny. According to one of the housekeeper applicants, numerous crank phone calls have been made to the house during the daytime hours.

"Damn. Okay, that's it. We will just have to see to it that Cleary is hired. I can't take any chances with Brenda's safety."

The Outback -- 7:00pm

Brenda, Lois and Gloria entered the restaurant for dinner. Jax would join them after he had finished his meeting with the Economic Development Committee of the City Council. Brooke was with Ned for the evening. Brenda was wearing a red wool dress and her hair was swept back with mother of pearl combs. She looked stunning and caught the eyes of quite a few customers as she entered. Felicia walked over to them and hugged Lois before she seated them at a table. Miranda stood behind the bar as she witnessed the whole scene.

The women were seated and Lois noticed Miranda staring in their direction. "Who is that?"

Brenda rolled her eyes. "That's the former Mrs. Jacks."

Miranda then came over to their table. "Hi, I'm Miranda Jameson. Welcome to the Outback."

"Miranda, this is Lois Ashton and Gloria Cerullo."

"Nice to meet you. It is nice to see you, Brenda. I almost did not recognize you when you arrived. I cannot believe how big you are. Are you sure you are not carrying twins?"

"No, Miranda. I am not having twins."

"That's good. I do not know how you are going to manage one child, let alone two."

Gloria cleared her throat as Brenda fought to keep her composure. "Jax did not tell me you were dining with us tonight. I am surprised especially since we spent all afternoon together at the Foundation. Brenda, I thought you would be offering your services to the Foundation since J & J Jacks is involved, but I guess you have more important things to do with your valuable time."

Lois was digging her fingernails into the table. "Well, Brenda is busy these days taking care of Jax and their unborn child. You know how men are, Miranda, you have to cater to all their needs. Of course, catering to a certain one of Jax's needs got her in this condition in the first place."

Brenda shielded her face to hide her grin as Miranda left to send a waiter to their table. Lois took a deep breath. "What a witch. I must say Jax's taste in women has improved dramatically over the past six years."

Jax then walked through the door and Brenda waved him over to the table. He kissed her fully on the lips and then kissed the cheeks of both Lois and Gloria. "Ladies, you all look lovely this evening. I trust we had a busy day."

"Yes, we did. Lois and Gloria were a tremendous help. How was your day?"

"Very productive. We may have a lead on a candidate for the corporate counsel position. Since the grant applications have increased, more volunteers are being recruited. Somehow Miranda learned of the need for volunteers and Keesha enlisted her services as a volunteer."

Gloria looked at Lois and Brenda and then said, "Yes, Miranda told us about her work at the Foundation when she stopped by the table earlier."

Jax looked at Brenda who flashed him a smile. As the evening progressed, the four enjoyed a leisurely dinner. Brenda and Jax shared several kisses and a slow dance as Gloria watched Miranda's fixation on the couple. When they returned to Jax and Brenda's for the evening, Gloria told Lois that Miranda obviously was not ready to let go of Jax and that Brenda had better keep her eyes open.

The Jacks' Residence -- 8:00am

Brenda awakened to a beautiful spring morning. She opened the french doors and walked onto the balcony to enjoy the gentle breeze. Everything was falling into place. Corrine would arrive later this morning to begin her housekeeping duties and Patrick would start his work on the grounds later this afternoon. Thanks to Lois and Gloria's assistance, the closets and kitchen cabinets were organized. The only room that needed to be furnished was the nursery. Brenda was already lonely for Lois even though she had only been gone a day. Having Brooke in the house had given Brenda a taste of what the future would bring.

Jax had an early racquetball game with A.J. but would return home before he went to the Foundation office. Brenda had a full day planned so she decided to grab a shower and get dressed before Jax returned. Jax entered the bedroom to find the bed empty. He heard the shower running and decided to surprise Brenda. The steam from the shower created a dense fog like atmosphere in the bathroom. Jax tiptoed into the bathroom and eased open the glass shower door. Brenda was standing with her back to him as he quietly snuck into the huge stall. Jax moved toward her and wrapped his arms around her expanding waistline. He loved feeling her swollen abdomen knowing it was the result of the life they had created.

"Excuse me sir, but have we been introduced?"

"Believe me, it is better for both of us that my identity remain a mystery."

"I will have you know that I expect my husband to return at any moment. What will you say to him when he finds you here?"

"I will tell him he is one lucky man."

"Okay, you can stay but I won't be responsible for my actions."

"That's what I am counting on." Jax then began nuzzling her neck as his hands moved to her breasts. Her breasts were incredible now and he could not resist them. His hands thoroughly caressed the fullness of her breasts as Jax delighted in the feel of their softness. Her nipples immediately responded to his touch. She turned around to face him and her hands slid down his chest and began caressing him. The urgency and intensity of her touch aroused him immediately and he groaned as lifted her off the ground. She immediately wrapped her legs around him as he backed her against the wall. Their bodies responded to the fires burning inside them as they were drawn together like magnets. As their connection deepened, the steam intensified as moans of ecstasy echoed from the shower stall.

Charles Street Foundation -- 1:00pm

Jax, Justus, Lee and A.J. were meeting with the foreman and developer concerning the renovation efforts. Multiple shifts were working on the reconstruction to meet the deadlines. The zoning variances had been approved by the City Council and the additional grant funding legislation would come up for a vote later in the week. Lee had spoken to Scott about the corporate counsel position and he was interested in meeting with Jax to further discuss the scope of the duties. A meeting was scheduled between Jax, Jerry and Scott for Friday. Scott wanted the possibility of his return to Port Charles to remain confidential so the meeting would take place in the Toronto office of J & J Jacks.

As A.J., Lee and Justus headed out, Miranda entered the office. As she walked by Jax's desk, she handed him a wrapped package.

"What is this?"

"Open it. It's a gift for the baby."

Jax unwrapped the package to find The Complete Tales & Poems of Winnie-The-Pooh by A.A. Milne. "Miranda, this is a first edition."

"Of course, how could your child be given anything less. I figured you could start reading the stories to the baby as soon as it is born to promote the love of the classics."

"This is a wonderful gift."

"You are welcome. Look inside. I wrote an inscription."

Jax opened the front cover to the find the following, "May your life be influenced by the words of the classics and the vitality of your father."

"Thank you, Miranda."

Luke's Club -- 4:00pm

The club had not yet opened for the dinner shift and Jason and Sonny were sitting at the bar. Gina entered to start her shift as hostess and handed Sonny a small box. "Sonny, I found this package sitting on the sidewalk outside the front door of the club. It has your name on it."

Jason immediately jumped off the bar stool and told Sonny not to touch the package. Sonny stood up and carried the package outside while he told everyone else to remain inside. Sonny opened up the package to find a dead red rose and a note. The note read, "Even in death, her beauty will remain unscathed."

Jason joined Sonny outside.

"I thought I told you to stay inside."

"Sonny, what is it?"

Sonny then handed Jason the box and the note.

"Jason, they are going to use her to get to me. If it is the last thing I ever do, I will protect her."

"I'll call Benny and he can get in contact with Cleary."

"Have a car positioned outside the house. I want her followed at all times. Tell Cleary to bring in some extra manpower."

The Jacks' Residence -- 6:30pm

Brenda was on the terrace enjoying the warm spring evening. Dinner had just been delivered from The Port Charles Grille. The sun was beginning to set as Jax appeared.

"What is all this?"

"It is such a beautiful evening, I thought we would dine by sunset."

Jax walked over to Brenda and kissed her gently on the lips. "What a wonderful idea. Now, tell me how your day was."

"It was hectic. Corrine and Patrick started work and I spent all afternoon with the photographer having head shots made for the campaign. How was your day?"

"Very productive. I am going to meet Jerry in Toronto for a meeting with Scott Baldwin about the corporate counsel position."

"So he really is amenable to the possibility of returning to Port Charles. Lucy would be ecstatic if that happened. It had been so hard for her to be away from Serena."

"Well, he is willing to consider the possibility."

"I will keep my fingers crossed."

"Miranda was in the office today processing the grant applications."

"She certainly has become very attached to the cause."

"She is generous with her time. She bought the baby a present."

"She did? What is it?"

"A first edition collection of the works of A.A. Milne."

"Why does that not surprise me? I guess she wanted to ensure that my child had a fighting chance to be literate."

"Brenda."

"I'm sorry, Jax. I do not want to talk about Miranda tonight. I just want to spend the evening with you. Do you know what happened one year ago today?"

"No."

"One year ago today we had our first proper kiss."

Jax smiled as he remembered the kiss which had occurred as they sat by the pool at the beach house in Malibu. "See, there was a reason I told you I never make promises I can't keep. I knew I would have to kiss you again."

Brenda smiled back at him. "Thank goodness for that."

The sky was now painted with the rich colors of orange, yellow, gold as the sun descended from the sky. Jax wrapped his arms around Brenda as the colors reflected off her face. Jax cupped her face with his hands. "You are so beautiful."

"I love you."

"I love you more."

Their lips were then drawn together like magnets. They spent the rest of the evening reliving the memories of Malibu while making new memories for the future.

Friday, April 11, 1997
J & J Jacks, Toronto Office -- Noon

Jax, Jerry and Scott were meeting about the corporate counsel position in the Port Charles office. Scott thought it was a great opportunity and he was ready to seriously consider returning to Port Charles. Serena needed a real home with friends and family around. He had certainly had his share of experiences in dealing with Port Charles politics and the City Council. He also looked forward to the competition between J & J Jacks and ELQ.

Scott decided he would travel to Port Charles early next week to see the operation firsthand. It was perfect timing as John and Jane were going to be on the east coast next week to look at some thoroughbreds and then were going to travel to Port Charles to visit Jax and Brenda and tour the new headquarters. Scott left the office to return to Serena. Jax and Jerry were now alone for the first time since Miranda had reappeared in Jax's life.

"Jax, I think it is time for us to discuss Miranda."

"Jerry, not now."

"Jax, I am sorry. We did what we thought was best. We went along with Miranda's wishes so that you could go on with your life."

"It was not your decision to make. She was my wife and I had the right to be there for her. You all took that right away from me. You saw how I suffered. There were times I wanted to die."

"Jax, I can't change what happened. Believe me, I would if I could. Now we just need to concentrate on the present."

"Jerry, that is not as easy as it may seem."

"Jax, you have a new life. I have never seen you happier. You and Brenda are together. You are going to be a father. The past is over. For everyone's sake, let it go."

"I am so tired of hearing everyone say that. My whole life was turned upside down and I am still trying to come to grips with that. Letting go is going to take some time for both Miranda and me."

"Jax, all I ask is that you try. Do it for Brenda and for Miranda and most importantly do it for yourself. It is the only way."

"All right, big brother, let's just leave it at that for now. I do have a question for you?"

"Ask away."

"Are you ever going to grace us with your presence in Port Charles? I mean Brenda is beginning to doubt your existence. We have been together almost a year now and she has never even met you."

Jerry laughed. "Well now that the sheila has proven she is truly crazy by agreeing to bring another member into this insane family, I guess she has earned the privilege of meeting me."

Jax rolled his eyes. "Oh, she will be so honored."

"And if she is as beautiful as Mum and Dad say, then we will just have to see what other privileges I extend to her."

Jax shook his head. "You will never change."

"Of course not. It would too devastating to the female population."

The Jacks Residence -- 3:00pm

Brenda was in the nursery inspecting the painting and wallpaper work completed earlier in the week. The furniture for the nursery had been ordered and would be delivered next week. The carpeting would be installed tomorrow. The room was empty except for the teddy bear Jax had purchased at Wyndham's and the gifts they had received for the baby. Brenda walked over to the wall cabinet where the gifts were kept and picked up the book from Miranda. She read the inscription from Miranda for what was probably the fifteenth time since Jax had put the book in the cabinet earlier in the week. The words still caused Brenda's blood to boil each time she read them. She wanted to throw the book in the fireplace but knew that was not the answer. She decided she had to take more of an assertive action.

Brenda went downstairs and met Corrine in the foyer. "Corrine, do you know where Virgil is? I need to head to take care of something in town."

"Mrs. Jacks, I am sorry but he has not returned from picking up the drapery fabric as you requested."

"That's fine. I will take my car."

"Pardon me, Mrs. Jacks, but I know Mr. Jacks specifically requested that Virgil be with you at all times."

"Corrine, Mr. Jacks is becoming a tad paranoid these days. I will go into town and do what I need to do and then come right back. I will be fine."

Brenda then left the house and was walking into the driveway when Patrick looked up from working in the tulip garden. "Mrs. Jacks, are you leaving?"

"Yes, Patrick, and I am driving myself. Now before you begin your lecture, I appreciate your concern but I will be fine."

After Brenda had driven off the property, Patrick picked up his cell phone and called Sonny to alert him that Brenda had left the estate without a driver. He also informed Sonny that Jax was in Toronto and would not be returning until late.

Sonny told Patrick that Benny would follow Brenda until she returned to the estate.

Miranda's Apartment -- 5:00pm

Miranda opened the door to find Brenda there. "May I come in?"

"Something tells me that you will stand in my doorway until I let you in so we might as well get this over with."

"Miranda, this is not a social call. I came here to tell you to stop trying to involve yourself in Jax's life. He has made his choice and he is with me now. There is nothing you can do about that so it is time for you to move on."

"Well, well, well. Do I detect pangs of jealousy here? Is there trouble in paradise already?"

"Miranda, don't do this. You will only end up hurting yourself. Jax and I are together. You can't relive the past."

"You are really one to talk about that, Brenda. You should take your own advice and apply it to your relationship with Sonny."

"Sonny is not sending inscribed books to my child nor spending every free moment with me at my office under the guise of performing volunteer services. Miranda, I know what you are trying to do and it will not work."

"Brenda, you are the one who is not fooling anyone. You are using this pregnancy to keep Jax on a short leash. You figured it was the best way to keep him."

Miranda, you have no idea who Jax is. You knew him for four weeks, six years ago when he was a teenager. He is now a man. He was forced to deal with the tragedies of life early on because of you. He suffered because of your lies but in the end his suffering and grief made him stronger. He is not the same person who spent four weeks with you on a beach and he will never be that person again. He is changed forever. You made the choice to let him believe you were dead and now you must deal with the consequences."

Miranda was taken aback at Brenda's statement and at her composure.

"Don't worry, Miranda. I will take care of him and believe me Jax will be very happy. I can see myself out. Good night."

Brenda exited the apartment leaving Miranda alone with the harsh reality of the truth of Brenda's words.

The Jacks' Residence -- 7:00pm

Brenda had arrived home from her visit with Miranda and was awaiting Jax's return from Toronto. The intercom signal for the east gate was heard and Corrine went to answer it. "Mrs. Jacks, Sonny Corinthos is at the east gate entrance and is seeking admittance."

"Let him enter, Corrine." Brenda wondered what Sonny wanted and knew Jax would not be pleased that he was on the property.

Corrine showed Sonny into the living room where Brenda was sitting. "Well, aren't you the lady of manor?

"Sonny, why are you here? You know Jax is not going to appreciate this."

"I don't care what Jax appreciates. What I do care about is you and I want to know why you left this house without a driver especially with your husband out of town."

"Sonny, how do you know I left without a driver and that Jax is out of town? Are you having me followed?"

"Brenda, I told you and the wonder boy that I was going to protect you and I meant it. I was not just speaking to hear myself talk. You are in danger whether you believe it or not and I will do what it takes to keep you safe."

"So you are having me followed."

"I am looking out for your safety at home and away from home."

"What do you mean my safety at home? You have someone watching me here. Who?"

Sonny gave her no response. Brenda pondered the situation and knew.

"It's Patrick, isn't it? Sonny, I do not believe this. What do you think you are doing?"

"I am protecting you like I promised. I am not going to sit back and watch another woman I love die."

"Sonny, Patrick can't stay here."

"Brenda, you do not realize the gravity of this situation. You have to be extremely careful especially now with a baby on the way. I have no idea who is behind this. The police have no clues and until I have some information, I can't risk these people using you to get to me."

"Sonny."

"Brenda, I don't want to hear it. Don't you realize what I am saying? You and even Jax could be sitting ducks here. I need someone here to keep an eye on things. Patrick is eminently qualified to perform the services you need while at the same time keeping his eyes and ears open for me."

"Sonny, when Jax finds out, it will be World War III."

"Then don't tell him."

"I can't lie to him."

"Brenda, just don't tell him. Believe me I will find a way to keep an eye on you whether it is with Patrick or someone else. I do not care what Jax thinks about it. You are better off letting things stay as they are for both your sakes."

"Sonny, what am I supposed to tell Jax about the reason for your visit tonight?"

"Tell him I came by to give you a gift for the baby." Sonny then took a box from his jacket pocket and handed the box to Brenda.

"What is this?"

"I told you it is a gift for the baby."

Brenda opened the box a found an infant's cross. "Sonny, thank you. It is beautiful."

"You are welcome."

Both stood in strained silence until Sonny finally spoke. "I need to head back to the Club now."

"Okay. I will see you later."

"Brenda, promise me you will not go out alone again."

"I promise. Good night."

The Jacks' Residence -- 11:00pm

Brenda was asleep in the den when Jax returned from Toronto. Jax walked over to her and kissed her on the cheek. "Brenda, I told you not to wait up."

"I needed to talk to you about some things. How did the meeting go with Scott?"

"It went fine. He is coming to Port Charles next week to see the facilities firsthand."

"Port Charles will be a flurry of activity next week with your parents coming and now Scott."

"Yes, it will be. Now, what did you need to talk to me about?"

"Miranda and Sonny."

"What about Miranda and Sonny?"

"I saw both of them today. I went to see Miranda and Sonny stopped by here."

Jax sat down on the couch next to her as Brenda continued.

"I went to see Miranda and told her in no uncertain terms that you and I are happy and that she needs to move on with her life."

"Brenda, I do not understand why you found that necessary to do. I made my choice and she knows that."

"Jax, she still wants you and she is under the delusion that she can get you back by manipulating herself back into your life."

"Brenda, how many times have we talked about this? I do not understand why you still view Miranda as a threat."

"She is a threat Jax because you are so racked with guilt over her accident that you do not see what she is doing. Don't you understand that her volunteer work is only an excuse to spend time with you at the Foundation? Then the gift."

"It's the gift, isn't it? Brenda, it's only a children's book."

"Jax, you have no clue as to what she is doing."

Jax could see how agitated Brenda had become with this discussion. He took her hand in his and said, "It does not matter what Miranda does, Brenda. I love you and I am happy with our life together."

Brenda took a deep breath in an effort to calm down. "I believe you, Jax. I just don't want you to get hurt or manipulated."

"Now tell me why Sonny was here."

"He came by to drop off a gift for the baby and to ensure that everything was okay here."

"How touching. Interesting that he chose the night I was out of town to make his little visit. He seems to make a habit of that."

"Jax, he was concerned."

"It is not his job to be concerned about you. I will protect my own family. Besides, he is the one you need protecting from."

"Are we going to get into this again about the gifts. Sonny did not send them, Jax."

"So he says. Interesting that the gifts stopped once we got married and announced the pregnancy. Maybe even the mad mobster has some respect for the family unit."

"Jax, that's enough."

"Brenda, don't you see how he is manipulating you? He is scaring you and using it as an excuse to remain involved in your life."

Brenda was exhausted and this conversation was not getting them anywhere. "Jax, Sonny is not my life, you and our baby are."

"Brenda, I am sorry. I know that we will continue to have to deal with our pasts -- some days that is easier than others."

"I am sorry too, Jax."

"Now, I think it is time for you and our little one to get to bed."

With that, they then headed upstairs for bed.

The Jacks' Residence -- 9:00am

Jax and Brenda were enjoying breakfast and discussing their busy schedules for the day. Brenda had a meeting with Lucy to finalize the plans for the photo shoot next week. This afternoon, the furniture for the nursery would be delivered. Scott Baldwin was arriving in town today to get his first look at the J & J Jacks' headquarters. Jax and Scott had dinner plans with Justus and the accountants. John and Jane would arrive tomorrow. Jax also expected Jerry to make an appearance but he was keeping that fact a secret from Brenda so she would be surprised when she finally met the infamous Jerry Jacks.

"It will be so wonderful to see your parents again. I hope they approve of the decorating decisions I made."

"Brenda, why are you worrying about that? This house looks like it should be featured in a design magazine. You did an incredible job and my parents will love it."

"You are not an impartial observer, Jax. I just want everything to be perfect. This is the first time we have had a real home to share with your family."

"Sweetheart, everything is perfect. The house is beautiful and the grounds look spectacular especially with the azaleas in full bloom. Patrick has been doing an incredible job."

Brenda felt a lump in her throat when Jax mentioned Patrick's name. She hated the fact that she had not told Jax about Patrick's ties to Sonny. She had justified her lie of omission with the facts that Patrick was a fantastic gardener and Sonny's promise that he would find a way to watch her no matter what.

"All right, Jax. I will try not to work myself into a complete panic before your parents arrive tomorrow."

The Charles Street Foundation -- 1:00pm

Scott had arrived in Port Charles earlier this morning and Jax, Lee and Justus had given him a tour of the plants and warehouses. The renovation work on the executive offices was nearing completion. The plant restoration would be the most time consuming with completion expected over the summer. The warehouse refurbishing was also close to being finalized.

"Well, Jax, you have certainly gone full steam ahead on your plans. The headquarters and plant facilities are quite impressive. I guess J & J Jacks means business."

"Yes, Scott. This is quite an undertaking but in the end it will provide J & J Jacks with a first rate operation here."

"It is interesting that you are moving J & J Jacks to Port Charles because you consider the city to be your home now. Port Charles always was my home and now may be the perfect time for me to return here."

Scott and Jax had realized that they shared quite a few common interests and goals during their many discussions over the past few weeks. Jax knew that Scott was worried about Serena living away from her family and Jax could identify with that, especially now that he and Brenda would be bringing a child into the world. He could not imagine raising a child away from family and friends.

Miranda then entered the offices of the Foundation. Introductions were made and Jax and Scott continued their discussions. Miranda noticed the camaraderie between the two men and wondered if she could use it to her advantage. She decided she was definitely going to have to get to know Mr. Baldwin.

As Jax, Scott and Justus were reviewing the tax credit legislation, Jax's cellular phone rang. "Hello, this is Jax."

"Mr. Jacks, this is Virgil. I am sorry to bother you but we seem to have a little problem here.

"Virgil, is Mrs. Jacks all right?"

"Yes, sir. She is fine. She is with Ms. Coe right now in the offices of Jacks' Cosmetics. The problem is that we have been tailed since we left the estate."

Jax gritted his teeth. "I understand Virgil. Where is the other car now?"

"Across the street from Ms. Coe's office. The car has made no attempt to get close to us. It has maintained a safe following distance the entire time."

"Thank you for the information. I will take care of the situation. Does Mrs. Jacks have any other plans this afternoon?"

"No, sir. She wants to return home immediately after the meeting so she can check on the furniture delivery."

"Good. When you arrive home, please call me. Also, write down the license plate number of the vehicle and I will get it from you this evening. Please do not mention anything about this to Mrs. Jacks."

"Yes, sir. Good-bye, Mr. Jacks."

"Good-bye and thank you, Virgil."

Miranda's eyes had been on Jax throughout his entire conversation with Virgil. She had been too far away to hear any of the conversation but knew Jax was agitated. She knew that his agitation was generally about Brenda's friendship with Sonny and she wondered what Brenda had done now to keep Sonny around. Miranda smiled to herself thinking that Brenda was going to hang herself trying to keep two men on leashes.

The Jacks' Residence -- 9:00pm

Brenda and Corrine were finalizing the arrangements for John and Jane's arrival tomorrow. Brenda was still nervous about her in-laws' visit. The furniture had been delivered and the nursery was now completed. The room looked beautiful. There was a brass cradle in the corner of the room. The bedding set design was small embroidered balloons on an ivory background. The curtains and the lamp shade matched the bedding and the wallpaper border also contained the balloon design. There was a changing table and dresser as well as a glider rocker. There was also the wall cabinet which contained the gifts they had received. Finally, there was a balloon mobile hanging over the cradle.

Brenda walked over the cradle and turned on the mobile's music. She picked up the fuzzy teddy bear off the shelf of the wall cabinet and sat down in the glider rocker. She closed her eyes and imagined herself six months from now with the baby in her arms. Jax had returned from his dinner meeting and walked up the stairs to find Brenda. He passed the nursery and heard the music of the mobile. He looked into the room and momentarily stopped breathing at the scene before his eyes. The moonlight was streaming through the window onto Brenda's face. She looked like an angel. Jax silently entered the room and put his hands on her shoulders. She opened her eyes and put her hand over his. There were no words spoken -- none were needed.

Tonight the rest of the world did not exist.

The Jacks' Residence -- 8:30am

It was another beautiful spring day and Jax was out for his morning run. His mind was cluttered with thoughts of Sonny. Jax knew that Sonny's men were the ones tailing Brenda yesterday. His mind then went to Sonny's visit to the house the week before when Jax was in Toronto. He thought of the gift for the baby which Sonny had used as the excuse to see Brenda. Jax knew Sonny refused to accept that Brenda was happy. Sonny was continuously playing on Brenda's sympathies to maintain his ties to her. Jax had reached his limit. He knew Sonny had sent the anonymous gifts. Jax had the car's license plate number which Virgil had given him the night before. He was going to have to speak to the police about this. Sonny Corinthos had to be stopped.

Jax returned from his run to find Brenda in the kitchen arranging flowers in a variety of vases. "I see we are up bright and early this morning. Those flowers are beautiful. I had no idea you had such a knack for floral arranging."

"My days as Lila Quartermaine's assistant made me quite an expert on flowers. Her gardens are renowned throughout Port Charles and she always had fresh flowers in the house. I want to have arrangements throughout the house when your parents arrive."

"Brenda, you said you were not going to go into a complete panic about my parent's visit."

I said I would try, Jax. I tried and I failed."

Jax could only shake his head at her and smile. He walked over to kiss her. "Jax, you definitely need a shower. And do not leave your wet towels or clothes all over the floor. This place has to be immaculate when your parents arrive and I do not have the time to pick up after you today."

Jax exited the kitchen muttering "Nag, nag, nag."

"I heard that," Brenda said with a smirk on her face.

Sonny's Penthouse -- 10:00am

Sonny answered the knock at his door to find Jax. "Well, Jaxxy boy. To what do I owe this honor?"

"Stay away from my wife, Corinthos."

"What are you talking about, Jax? You can't tell me you have a problem with the gift I bought."

"I have a problem with you, Corinthos. As far as the gift goes, it was very touching. I do find it ironic for a man in your profession to be giving religious gifts. I always thought the Church frowned on murder, drugs, prostitution, gambling, etc."

"Watch it, Jax."

"No, Sonny, you watch it. I know what you are doing and it is over. Stay out of Brenda's life and out of my way or you will pay the consequences."

"Oh, I am shaking like a leaf here. Jax, I have no clue as to what you are talking about."

"Sonny, don't even waste your breath. I know you were the one who sent Brenda the anonymous gifts and I know your goons have been following her. You and your goons stay away from her."

"Listen candy boy, I have told you on several occasions that I did not send her those gifts. She is being used and I told you I was going to protect her and that is what I am doing. You certainly are incapable of doing the job, look what happened to wife number one."

"It is not your job to protect Brenda. She is my wife. Even if I believed your story about the gifts, why would you be anywhere near her. If these enemies of yours are using her to get to you then you are putting her in more danger by refusing to stay away from her. You can't have it both ways, Corinthos."

"Jax, you would not know what was is going on if it hit you smack in the face."

"Sonny, I know perfectly well what is going on. You want my wife and you will do anything to get her back including endangering her life and the life of our child. You think you can coerce her into becoming involved with you again out of pity and sadness for your miserable existence. You are wrong. She loves me and she won't return to the miserable life she had with you. She escaped that existence and will never go back. It is over. Stay out of our way or pay the price."

Jax then left the penthouse slamming the door behind him.

The Charles Street Foundation -- 1:00pm

John and Jane had arrived in Port Charles and had come straight to the office from the airport. Jerry would arrive later this evening and would come straight to the house. John and Jane were given a tour of the facilities and were then introduced to Scott. After his discussions with Lee and Gail, Scott had determined that he was ready to return to Port Charles with Serena. He definitely was interested in the job with J & J Jacks if all the details could be worked out.

Justus and A.J. then entered the office. A.J. gave John and Jane an overview of the City Council legislation favorable to the relocation of J & J Jacks. There would be committee hearings with testimony on Friday concerning the final tax credit issues. Both John and Jax were going to testify about the benefits of such legislation and the plans for J & J Jacks in Port Charles. The vote would be next week.

John and Jane were very pleased with the efforts of Jax, Justus and A.J. in connection with the relocation. John was still taking it easy due to his heart attack and all the details had been handled with competence and proficiency. John and Jane were also impressed with Scott's credentials. His ties to the Port Charles community definitely made him an ideal candidate for the corporate counsel position. Plans were to have a deal made by the weekend when John and Jane returned to Alaska.

The Jacks' Residence -- 6:00pm

Brenda and Corrine had worked all day to have the house look perfect. Brenda had arranged for a cook to be on staff while John and Jane were visiting. Dinner would be served on the terrace. Jax had told Brenda that dinner would be for five and she presumed that Scott Baldwin would be joining them. Corrine knew that the fifth guest would be Jerry and she had made up one of the guests rooms for him without Brenda's knowledge.

Brenda was finishing getting dressed. She had on a three piece sapphire blue silk pant suit comprised of pants, a matching v-neck camisole style top and a mid length matching jacket. The camisole accentuated her ample cleavage. She wore the sapphire pendant Jax had recently given her and a pair of diamond earrings. Her hair was swept up in a french twist with diamond hair combs. She looked like a princess.

As Jax's car approached the east gate entrance, Jax's cellular phone rang. John answered it to hear Jerry's voice announcing he was on his way to the house from the airport. Jax gave Jerry the pass code for the gate so his entrance would not have to be announced. Patrick unloaded the bags from the car as John and Jane exited the vehicle and surveyed the grounds. Brenda heard the car and took a quick look in the bedroom mirror before she went downstairs. She reached the bottom of the stairs as John, Jane and Jax entered the foyer.

"John and Jane, it is so wonderful to see you. Welcome to our home." Brenda then went and hugged both of them.

"Let me look at you, dear. Oh, look John how beautiful she is."

"You are just blossoming, my dear. If I were twenty years younger and not married to Mum here, my son would have some stiff competition for you."

"Oh, Pa. Don't listen to him, Brenda. Your radiance has made him take leave of his senses."

Jax watched the interaction between the three. His father was right, Brenda was blossoming. Her beauty never ceased to amaze him. Brenda then walked over to him and kissed him. Patrick brought the bags in while Jax and Brenda gave John and Jane a tour of the ground floor before they showed John and Jane to the guest room to change for dinner. Jax and Brenda went to the master suite so Jax could also change.

"Jax, where is Scott? Isn't he coming for dinner?"

"Our guest will be here any moment." Jax could not help himself from staring at her.

"What's the matter, Jax?"

"Nothing at all. You are such a vision of loveliness it is just hard to take my eyes off of you."

"Thank you, honey." Brenda went over to him and placed her hands on his bare chest as their lips met. The sound of a car in the driveway broke up the moment that had become too intense considering they had guests.

"Sweetheart, can you go greet our guest while I finished getting dressed? I will be right down."

Brenda descended the stairs and asked Corrine to show their guest into the living room.

Brenda sat on the living room couch as the door bell sounded. She smoothed out her jacket as she heard footsteps approach the room. She looked up to find a pair of steel blue eyes looking at her from the doorway. The eyes made her take a second look and she realized the eyes were joined by a familiar smile and cheek bone structure. She continued to sit in stunned silence.

"Well, is this any way to greet your brother-in-law?

Brenda stood up. "Jerry?"

"The one and only."

Brenda then went over to him and Jerry grabbed her and swung her around for a traditional Jacks' hug.

"Now, tell me something. I bet Jax did not tell you how handsome I was nor did he mention that I am solely responsible for the success of J & J Jacks. No harm done, you can see that now. I have to let you in on a little secret, Jax is incredibly jealous of me since I got all the looks in the family. The real reason we have not met yet is that Jax was afraid you would take one look at me and run off with me. So he forbid me from seeing you. Well, I am here now so you just let me know when you are ready and I will have my jet ready in minutes to go wherever you want. We will just leave Jax a note."

Brenda put an extremely serious look on her face and took Jerry's hand. "Oh, Jerry. I was afraid of this. Your mother once made a comment to me about Jax's jealousy of you and I did not believe it. Now I know how wrong I have been."

Jerry look stunned. "Huh. Brenda."

During this time, Jax had come downstairs and was standing outside the living room door listening to the conversation between Jerry and Brenda.

"Jax is so jealous of your work with your father. This relocation project has been his attempt to show your parents once and for all that he is capable of making it in the business world. I heard him on the phone last week though saying that if it were not for you and A.J. Quartermaine and Justus Ward that this relocation plan would have failed. He now realizes he is a complete failure. He told me you would never have the time to meet me but I know now that he kept you away because he was afraid of what would happen between us. I know everything about you. I have pictures from your mother and I have just been waiting for this opportunity. Jax knows about my feelings about you. Didn't you feel the chemistry between us when you entered the room? '

Brenda then put her hand on Jerry's leg. "I just wish I had been given some notice so I could have been packed. Oh well, you have plenty of money so I can just buy a new wardrobe. Now, I need a piece of paper to leave Jax a note."

Jax had to hold his breath to prevent himself from getting hysterical. Jane and John then came into the hallway and Jax motioned them over to the door and put his finger to his lips to request their silence.

Brenda rose from the couch and Jerry was confounded about her behavior. She went over to the desk and found a piece of paper and sat down next to Jerry again. She became aware of the presence of Jax, John and Jane outside the door.

"Do you have any ideas? I can't believe your parents are here for this. Well, at least you will not have to face the unpleasantness of telling them. They will know tomorrow when they get up and we are gone. I suggest we leave after 1:00am. Jax should be asleep by then and it will give us about six hours before he realizes I am gone. I do not think he will come after us."

Brenda began to write the note. Jerry got up and started pacing around the room. He couldn't decide whether to call for Jax or to call the psychiatric ward of the local hospital.

"Brenda, I think maybe you should lie down. Maybe you have overdone it today."

Brenda blushed. "Jerry, we have to wait until we are alone together before we can 'lie' down. We can't do that in Jax's house. Now we have to figure out how to get through dinner. You can sit next me so at least we can play footsie under the table."

Jane and John were thoroughly amused at the entertainment they were being provided. Meanwhile, Jerry believed Brenda had gone completely of her rocker. He sat down next to her and told her he was going to go and get Jax.

"Not yet, Jerry. We will not have the chance to be alone anymore this evening. We need to take advantage of this opportunity."

Brenda then took his face in her hands and passionately kissed him. Jerry's breath caught in his throat as the kiss ended and Brenda got off the sofa. Brenda then called for Jax.

Jerry was trying to regain his composure when Jax, John and Jane entered the room. Jerry did not know how he was going to get through the next five minutes, never mind the rest of the evening.

John, Jane and Jax moved across the room to greet Jerry. John looked at him and said, "What is wrong, son? You look guilty like you just stole the silverware."

Jane walked over to him. "Jerry, what is wrong? You look guilty. You did not proposition some married flight attendant again, did you?"

Jax went in for the kill. "Big brother, I do not care what you did, as long as you did not touch my wife." At this, John, Jane, Jax and Brenda began laughing hysterically. Jerry knew that he had been had.

"You wretched souls and you call yourselves part of my family. You have even corrupted the newest family member."

Brenda went over to Jerry and extended her hand. "No hard feelings?"

"How can I have any hard feelings? You are damned good. Jax, this woman is a master."

"Tell me about it. She is a true Jacks wouldn't you say?"

"She certainly is."

Corrine then announced that dinner was served and the five ventured out onto the terrace. The sun was just setting and the lights could be seen over the city. As the evening progressed, the sky was clear so the stars were truly visible. The reflection from the moon sent moon beams radiating onto the terrace.

Hurricane lamps were placed on the terrace walls to provide romantic lighting and music from the CD player could be heard through the terrace speakers. Jax could not help but notice how mesmerized Jerry was with Brenda. He laughed as he thought how she had captivated the hearts of all three Jacks men.

After dinner was over, everyone remained on the terrace and enjoyed the warm weather. Jax and Brenda danced to the music as Jerry watched them. Jane walked over to him and said, "She is something, isn't she?"

"Mum, she is even more beautiful than you described. Have you seen the way they look at each other?"

"Yes, Jerry, I have. They are meant to be together. All the pain they have suffered will be worth it if they can just hang onto the future and forget the past."

"Mum, he has to forget Miranda otherwise too much will come to light."

"I know. Your father and I have discussed this and we are very concerned that Miranda has remained in Port Charles. Now, the problem is even worse because of the Charles Street Foundation."

"What about Charles Street, Mum?"

"Miranda is one of the top volunteers there. She is often in the office with Jax."

Jerry was not at all happy to hear of this. He would have to look into this himself. The evening was quickly over and everyone prepared to head upstairs for bed.

Jane and John began to climb the stairs. "Good night, loves. We will see you in the morning."

Jerry walked up the stairs with Jax and Brenda. As they reached the door to his room, Brenda kissed Jerry on the cheek. "Thank you for not hating me for the little stunt I pulled on you earlier? I just could not help myself."

"I know, Brenda. I hear that a lot. Good night you two."

Brenda and Jax then entered the master suite. Brenda was tired but extremely pleased at how the evening had gone. She had survived. She laid down across the bed to rest for a minute before she got undressed. Jax sat down next to her and took her feet in his hands and removed her shoes. He then began massaging her feet. Brenda thought she had died and gone to heaven. She sat up and Jax helped her off with her jacket. Jax went to the dresser to get her satin night shirt as she stepped out of her pants and stockings. She sat back down on the bed and Jax lifted her camisole over her head. She put on her nightshirt as Jax removed the combs from her hair. He then took the hairbrush and brushed her hair before he slipped her under the sheets. He quickly undressed and joined her in bed. She immediately snuggled into his arms and put her head on Jax's chest.

"Brenda, thank you."

"Thank you for what?"

"For making this a home and for loving my family. And for making my brother eat his heart out."

Brenda's heart skipped a beat at that moment. She turned her head so she could look right into his eyes. "Thank you Jax for giving me a home and a family for the first time in my life. I love you."

"I love you, Brenda, more than you will ever know."

They spent the rest of the night in each other's arms as their hearts beat as one.

The Jacks' Residence -- 9:00am

Jax and John had already left to meet A.J. in connection with their testimony before the City Council later today. Jane was taking her morning walk and Brenda was sitting on the terrace reading the newspaper when Jerry appeared. "Good morning, beautiful."

"Good morning. Did you finish with your overseas call?

"Yes. I have some time before I meet Dad and Jax at the City Council this afternoon so I thought I would get to know my favorite sister-in-law better."

"Well, I would like to get to know my favorite brother-in-law better so it's a deal."

"Ladies first."

"Why isn't there a Mrs. Jerry Jacks?"

"I have not been as fortunate as my little brother has been. I have not found a woman who possesses the beauty, charm and fortitude that you have."

"Maybe you are not looking in the right places. Or maybe the fact that you are looking is the problem. I found Jax and I was not even looking. He says the same thing about finding me."

"You are right. I know Jax was not looking when you captured him under your spell. Then he was hooked with no means of escape. I will have to admit I was surprised until I met you. Now I know he had no desire to escape your charms."

"Brenda, this brings me to a question about you. What do you honestly feel about Miranda and her decision to stay in Port Charles?"

"Jerry, I do not know that we should be talking about Miranda."

"Brenda, not talking about it is not going to make a problem go away. I want to know what you think."

"Okay. If I had my choice she would be on the other side of the world and away from Jax forever. She is still in love with him and she wants him back. She sees me as a mere temporary road block to her ultimate goal. She has maneuvered her way into working at the Charles Street Foundation so she can be near him and she is constantly trying to resurrect the past. She has positioned herself as the ultimate martyr and as a paragon of virtue. Jax's guilt over the explosion has made him so vulnerable that he does not see it and she is using that fact to her advantage."

"Brenda, Miranda is blind if she sees you as a mere road block. You are more like a ten foot wide concrete wall surrounded by steel beams."

Brenda smiled. "I am just afraid she is going to hurt him and I won't let that happen. She made her decision six years ago and she has to live with the consequences. I have told her that but she has no respect for what a mere model says."

"Don't sell yourself short, Brenda. Believe me, you have her beaten hands down on all levels. Just give Jax a little time and he will realize what she is doing."

Jerry then looked at his watch and told Brenda there was something he remembered he had to take care of before the committee meetings. He left her to ponder his advice.

Miranda's apartment -- 11:00am

A stunned Miranda found Jerry at her door. She said nothing and Jerry made his way into the apartment.

"Jerry, what are you doing here? I had no idea you were coming to Port Charles. Jax did not say a word about it to me."

"You should take that as a sign, Miranda. Jax did not say anything to you because you are no longer part of his life. What the hell do you think you are doing trying to worm your way back into his life?"

"Oh, I can see you have been talking to his doe-eyed wife. Don't tell me she has you fooled as well. You can't believe she actually loves him. She is only using him to get to Sonny Corinthos and to maintain her materialistic lifestyle."

"Miranda, you have no idea what you are talking about. Jax and Brenda are very much in love and there is no future for you with him. You gave up that right six years ago at the mine."

"Jerry, you know how much we loved each other. You of all people should understand why I am trying to protect him from her."

"He loved you six years ago. He mourned you and he moved on. You need to do the same."

"He still loves me, Jerry. He is just confused now and he feels some obligation to Brenda because he lied to her."

"Miranda, I will not let you hurt him. We have all come too far here. I will stop you dead in your tracks if you continue to manipulate him."

"Oh you have a conscience now after all this time. You will destroy yourself if you destroy me. Your parents and Jax will never forgive you."

"I will have to take that chance to salvage Jax's relationship with Brenda. He deserves the happiness he has found and he is going to remain happy or you will pay the price."

"Jerry, how can you say this? You and I were friends. You helped me get through the worst of times. How can you be turning your back on me now especially for that woman?

"Don't bring her up again. You have no right to speak of her like that. She fought for Jax when the need arose, you did not do the same. Miranda we were friends until I uncovered those little secrets and now I am seriously questioning why I ever agreed to allow them to remain secrets. One false move and it is over."

Jerry then left the apartment never looking back at Miranda.

Dr. Meadows' Office -- Noon

Brenda's regular check-up was scheduled for today so she had asked Jane if she wanted to join her. Jane was thrilled that Brenda felt close enough to ask her to come along. Jax was at the City Council so he was going to miss this appointment. Brenda was a little more that seventeen weeks pregnant at this point. Dr. Meadows found everything to be as expected. Brenda had gained three pounds since her last visit. Her weight gain was not distributed throughout her body. She did not look pregnant from the back as she was carrying all her weight in her chest and her stomach. Jax had started referring to her stomach as a pouch. She knew that term was from his days as a boy chasing kangaroos in Australia but she was not sure she really liked the term. He finally persuaded her that it was a term of endearment as kangaroos were one of his favorite things on this earth.

Dr. Meadows let Jane and Brenda hear the baby's heartbeat through the stethoscope. Jane was overwhelmed and squeezed Brenda's hand as she heard the sound of her grandchild's heart. Brenda scheduled her next appointment and then she and Jane went to lunch before spending the rest of the afternoon shopping for the baby.

The Charles Street Foundation -- 3:00pm

Jax and John had finished testifying before the City Council and now were back at the office with Jerry and Scott. Brenda had called Jax earlier to let him know that her appointment with Dr. Meadows had gone fine. Details had been worked out for Scott's contract as corporate counsel of J & J Jacks' northeast headquarters. Jax had promised nothing would be leaked to the press until Scott determined the best way to handle his relocation to Port Charles.

A Board of Directors meeting of the Foundation would take place at the end of the month. Edward and Ned were on the Board and Jax and Jerry were slated to be elected as board members so this would be the first of many entanglements between the Jacks and the Quartermaines. Jax and Jerry could not wait and Scott was also looking forward to jumping right back into the fire.

John took a last look at the renovation plans and the financials before leaving the finalization of the project to Jax and Jerry. John and Jane were leaving in the morning and John did not expect to return to Port Charles until after the reconstruction was completed. It had been a most successful visit to Port Charles for John and Jerry and everything was falling into place. J &J Jacks would be a force to be reckoned with in Port Charles.

The Jacks' Residence -- 8:00pm

Dinner was over and the five Jacks were engaged in a serious game of poker. Brenda had again astounded the family with her gambling knowledge and her no fear attitude. She never ceased to amaze Jax. She was winning every other hand and Jax had made sure she was not the dealer since he knew she was privy to quite a few cheating tricks from her days as a teenager in Europe.

Jerry's competitive nature and obstinance got the better of him and he ended up losing his shirt to Brenda. She promised to put the money in the baby's college fund as a gift from Uncle Jerry. Jerry silently thanked the heavens above for giving Jax someone like Brenda. She was worth every minute of pain Miranda had caused him. Jerry vowed again to himself that he would not let Miranda interfere in Jax's life again. Jerry knew Miranda loved him but she was not the woman for Jax, Brenda was.

After Brenda had won the tenth hand, the game was called. Jerry voiced his opposition but Brenda told him she could not take advantage of a family member like that. John and Jane went upstairs to finish packing and head off to bed. Brenda also went up leaving Jerry and Jax to finish their drinks.

"You never have told me what you think of my wife?"

"I guess she will do," Jerry said laughing. "You have a rare find there, Jax. She almost makes me want to go out and find a wife."

"I can't believe my ears, Jerry. I can't imagine you with a wife."

"Neither could I but you and Brenda certainly make it look like a favorable proposition. Please tell me you two are as happy as you seem."

"We are even happier than that. I never thought I could love someone the way I love Brenda."

"It shows, Jax. It shows with both of you. I just want you to be happy and I will do anything I can to see that you stay that way."

Jax and Jerry then headed up the stairs and Jax quietly entered the master suite. "I am still awake. You do not have to tiptoe."

Jax quickly got undressed and climbed into bed. "Do you know how proud of you I was today?"

"Why, Jax?"

"Mum told me how happy she was to have spent the day with you and how pleased she was to go with you to see Dr. Meadows. She called Dad at the office and told him that she had heard the baby's heartbeat. You made today very special for her. She said she feels like she has a daughter now. Then this evening, you showed your tenacity and steel nerves in a cutthroat game of poker with this family."

"Jax, Jane is the closest thing I have to a mother and I want she and John to have as much contact and influence on our baby as possible. As far as the poker game goes, you know I hate to lose, so the rest was easy."

Jax laughed at her. He unbuttoned her nightshirt to reveal her protruding stomach. He gently laid his cheek on her stomach and began to talk to the baby. "Your mommy is very silly sometimes, little one. But she has a heart the size of this room and she will stand by you whatever you do. You are very lucky to have such a mommy."

"In a few weeks, your son will be kicking you right in the cheekbone when you do that."

"My daughter would never do that to me, Brenda." He then gently kissed her stomach before his lips moved to her lips.

"I will have you know, Mr. Jacks, that this will not entice me into sharing my winnings with you from this evening."

"I guess I will have to settle for enticing you into something else."

His kisses became more demanding as his hands slid up her thighs. She trembled at the feel of his touch. He was immediately aroused at the effect he had on her. Jax lifted the nightshirt over her head and Brenda helped him out of his red silk boxers. He rolled on top of her and she wrapped her legs around his thighs. She thought she was going to die from the anticipation as Jax trailed kisses down her neck. Brenda began nibbling on his ear as she ran her fingers through his thick hair.

She was going to explode awaiting their trip to paradise. She whimpered as she arched her back pleading with him to join her. Jax pulled her closer to him and groaned as their bodies connected. Their movements became urgent and more demanding as they sought to touch each other's souls. They cried out each other's names as they simultaneously climaxed. The fires of passion had been fulfilled and they had become one.

The Charles Street Foundation -- Noon

Miranda was working on grant applications as she tried to determine the next step in her quest to reunite with Jax. She knew her time was running out since the executive offices would be completed soon so Jax would no longer be working out of the Foundation office. The tax credit legislation had been approved by the City Council the day before so now the reconstruction was proceeding with full force. She had not seen Jax since her visit from Jerry. The visit had originally unnerved her but she decided Jerry would never jeopardize his own neck by revealing her secrets. She shuddered at the very thought of anyone discovering the truth about her. Even Jerry did not know everything.

As Miranda was lost in her thoughts, Jax walked into the office. "Good afternoon, Miranda."

"Hi, Jax. Congratulations on the City Council vote yesterday. You certainly have become quite a hero in this town. It is nice to see that you still believe in the ideals we used to talk about as we watched the sun come up over the ocean."

"That was a lifetime ago, Miranda. Did I have any calls?"

"Yes. Corrine called and would like you to call the house."

Jax picked up the phone and called Corrine. Corrine explained that two dozen roses had arrived this morning for Brenda and she wanted to be sure the delivery was expected. Jax had told Corrine, Patrick and Virgil to be alert him to any deliveries or suspicious activity. Jax knew he had not sent Brenda the flowers so he asked Corrine to open the card. The card was unsigned and the message read, "Here's to calm nerves and beautiful pictures from your photo shoot this afternoon." Jax told Corrine to get rid of the flowers and thanked her for the information.

Jax seethed as he thought about Sonny. Sonny knew how nervous Brenda was before a shoot. Jax's limit had been surpassed. He picked up the phone and called police headquarters. Mac was not available so he spoke to Detective Taggert. He explained the latest gift and also the trailing incident from last week. He gave Detective Taggert the license plate number of the vehicle. Detective Taggert said he would look into the matter and get back to Jax when he had some concrete information.

Jax looked at his watch and got up from the desk. "Miranda, I am leaving for the rest of the day. I can be reached on my cellular phone if there is an emergency. See you later."

Miranda watched in silence as he left the office. She knew he was agitated and she heard him on the phone trying to reach Mac. She decided she would have to get some information from Mac.

Jacks' Cosmetics Photo Shoot -- 1:00pm

Brenda had to laugh as she watched the frenzy of activity around her. Lucy was running between her assistant and Chase, the photographer. The shoot was taking place outdoors on a piece of property near the lighthouse. The field was full of wild flowers and was bordered by the river. Lucy thought it was the perfect all-natural setting. Fortunately, the rains of the past few days had stopped and the sun was shining in full force. It was a beautiful spring day with a gentle breeze. Brenda was wearing a short-sleeved free-flowing white cotton dress. The material rustled gently in the breeze as she walked along the river's edge. Soft curls framed Brenda's face as her hair was swept by the wind. She walked barefoot as she carried wild flowers. Her pregnancy was only noticeable in the shots taken from the side angle. The sun was glistening off the river as the close-up shots were taken. Brenda's hands swept her hair from her face as her dress danced in the wind. The light shining from her eyes was brighter than the rays from the sun. Lucy was so excited that she was about to burst. She had never seen Brenda look so beautiful.

Jax had arrived at the shoot earlier but his presence was undetected by either Brenda or Lucy. He had spoken to Virgil who was keeping an eye on Brenda from outside the car. Virgil had reported no suspicious activity and Jax sent him back to the house. Jax then walked over to Lucy. "Hello, Lucy. You certainly have quite a production here."

"I know, Jax. However, your wife is the only one that matters here. Just look at her. She is incredible."

"She certainly is." Lucy watched Jax as he was completely captivated by Brenda.

Chase gave Brenda some instructions for the next set of shots and she turned around and caught a glimpse of Jax. Her face immediately lit up and Chase began snapping pictures taking full advantage of the opportunity. After another series of poses, Chase told everyone to take a break. The last set of shots would be taken at sunset so there would be a short wait before the shoot would be completed. Brenda sat down on one of the directors chairs as Jax approached her. He took off his jacket and put it around her shoulders and then fully kissed her on the lips.

"Thanks to you, Carol is going to have to redo my lipstick now."

"Oh, what a shame."

"This is a surprise. I can't believe you found time to get away with everything that is going on at J & J Jacks."

"You are the most important thing in my life. I will always make time for you."

The sun was now beginning to set and Chase checked the lighting as he called for Brenda. She now had a print silk scarf wrapped around her shoulders as a shawl. The orange and pink hues from the sunset were reflecting off her dark hair. As the sun set behind her, Brenda danced along the river's edge with a pair of sandals in her hand. The final face shots were taken as the sun dropped like a fireball over the river. Lucy was ecstatic and Chase felt that the shots were the best of Brenda's career. Jax was grinning with pride at his wife's accomplishments. Brenda was relieved the day was over as exhaustion set in.

The Jacks' Residence -- 8:00pm

Brenda fell asleep almost immediately after getting into the car. Jax called Corrine as he drove home and asked that she draw a bath for Brenda. Jax carried her into the house and up the stairs to the bedroom. He laid her down on the bed as he carefully undressed her. She awoke as he lifted her up and carried her into the bathroom. He lowered her into the warm water and every muscle in her body relaxed. Jax gently stroked her skin with a washcloth and then massaged her scalp as he shampooed her hair. As he finished, he dried her skin off with plush towels and then helped her into her satin pajamas. Jax then dried and brushed her hair before carrying her back to bed.

Corrine had made a sandwich for Brenda and brought it up to the master suite with a glass of milk. Brenda was too tired to have any appetite but she knew the baby needed nourishment so she ate the meal Corrine had prepared. Jax sat on the bed next to her while she ate.

After Brenda had finished her dinner, Jax turned off the bedroom lights as Brenda slid under the sheets. She was on her side facing him with her head resting on her hands. Jax gently stroked her hair and her cheek until she fell asleep. A reflection from the brilliant night sky glittered through the skylight onto Brenda's smiling face. She was a true vision and she was all his.

Sonny's Penthouse -- 8:00am

Jason had arrived to get his instructions on the day's deliveries. He had a list of things to do before he left town tomorrow morning to visit Robin at Yale. This would only be the second time he had seen her since she had begun her drug protocol treatment. Jason had ordered a gold bracelet with interlocking hearts as a gift for Robin. The bracelet was to be picked up from Smythe's Jewelers today. The bracelet was purchased on Sonny's store account so Sonny was going to pick it up for Jason.

Jason was leery about heading to New Haven because he knew Sonny was worried about Brenda. Jason knew Sonny was still in danger and worried that Sonny's concern for Brenda would cause him to overlook his own safety. Sonny promised he would be careful. He was more upset that Jax was not doing enough to protect Brenda. Jason also knew that Detective Taggert was constantly in Sonny's face which was not making the situation any better.

Smythe's Jewelers -- 11:00am

Sonny entered the shop and greeted the saleswoman. Sonny admired the bracelet before the saleswoman put it into its engraved Smythe jewelry box. Sonny exited the shop and ran into Felicia and Georgie as they left the shoe store next door.

"Hi Sonny. Shopping for jewels I see."

"Yes, Felicia. It's a gift for a very special lady."

"Lucky lady. Well, we have a appointment with Simone so we have to run along. Good-bye."

"See you around, Felicia."

Sonny then walked up the block to meet Joseph at the tailor.

Across the street, Harry peaked around the corner and crossed the street. He then entered Smythe's Jewelers and was greeted by the saleswoman.

"Can I help you, sir?"

"I hope so. I am terrible at picking out gifts so I like to choose items that other customers purchase."

"Well, that is an interesting method of shopping."

"I know. So why don't you let me see what your last customer purchased."

The saleswoman showed Harry the bracelet with interlocking hearts that Sonny had just picked up for Jason.

"That is beautiful. I could not have made such a decision myself. I will take it. Also could you please gift wrap it for me and give me a card with it."

The Charles Street Foundation -- 4:00pm

The press release concerning Scott Baldwin's appointment as corporate counsel for J & J Jacks had been issued. Today Scott began his first official duties with J & J Jacks. This morning both Jerry and Jax had been elected to serve on the Board of Directors of the Foundation much to the chagrin of Ned and Edward. The quarterly board meeting would be held next Wednesday morning.

Scott had already enjoyed the first fray between Jax and Ned and Edward. Jerry was out of town so he missed all the fun. Scott was on the phone with the Toronto office and Jax was reviewing the new union contract when Detective Taggert walked into the office. Jax motioned for him to sit down.

"I have some information for you Mr. Jacks. We ran the license plate that your driver gave you and the car is registered to SC Corporation. This corporation is run by Corinthos and his associates."

"This is no big surprise to me, Detective. Have you found anything else?"

"Yes, look at this photo and tell me if you recognize this man?"

Jax recognized the photograph immediately as that of Patrick Cleary. "This is Patrick Cleary, my gardener."

"Mr. Cleary is a gardener but he is also an employee of SC Corporation."

Jax pounded his fist on the desk. Detective Taggert saw the rage in Jax's eyes. Before Jax could say anything more, his cellular phone rang. It was Corrine informing him that a package had just been delivered for Brenda. Jax knew that Brenda was with Lucy this afternoon so he told Corrine that he would be home momentarily and not to tell Brenda anything about the delivery.

"My wife was just sent another delivery."

"I am right behind you, Mr. Jacks."

The Jacks' Residence -- 5:00pm

Jax opened the package to find a bracelet from Smythe's Jewelers. The card read, "Our hearts will be joined together forever." Jax knew this was Sonny again. There was no return address but at least this gift contained a merchant name.

Detective Taggert told Jax he would go to Smythe's Jewelers when it reopened in the morning and trace the purchaser. Detective Taggert questioned Corrine but she had no relevant information to provide. Jax asked Detective Taggert to wait to question Patrick Cleary until after Jax had spoken to him. Detective Taggert asked that Jax not speak to Sonny until the police had the chance to do some further investigating. The detective did not want Sonny covering any of his tracks. Jax knew that Brenda was going to Bensonhurst tomorrow for a shopping spree and to spend the night with Lois. She would not be returning until Thursday so Jax decided to wait until tomorrow to speak to Patrick.

Jax was to meet Brenda at the Outback for dinner later that evening but he wanted to speak to Mac about the Sonny/Cleary situation before Brenda arrived at the restaurant. Detective Taggert told Jax he also planned to be at the Outback this evening so he would also speak to Mac. Detective Taggert left the house with a grin on his face. He knew Sonny was involved in this stalking and wondered if Sonny had finally slipped enough to be nailed by the police.

The Outback -- 7:00pm

Jax entered through the door and walked to the bar. Mac was behind the bar. Detective Taggert then walked into the restaurant and joined them.

"Have you briefed the Commissioner on the latest antics of the resident crime lord, Mr. Jacks?"

"No, Detective. I am just about to."

Jax then told Mac about this afternoon's delivery and the fact that Patrick Cleary was an employee of SC Corporation.

"This is not Sonny's typical behavior. I find it hard to believe he would be that sloppy."

"Mac, Corinthos' drug use has finally caught up with him. He is not making good decisions. He also seems to be affected by his feelings for Mr. Jacks' wife."

"Mac, this has to stop. I will not allow him to stalk Brenda. My God he has had someone in our home all this time."

"Jax, I understand your concern. Once we have some concrete evidence, we will bring him in."

Felicia then walked up to the bar and overheard Sonny's name being mentioned. "Good evening, Gentlemen. I see you are discussing our favorite accessory to staged deaths. He seemed pretty happy when I saw him this morning coming out of Smythe's Jewelers."

Mac nonchalantly asked, "Smythe's Jewelers. Was he getting one of those fancy watches of his repaired?"

"No, he said he was buying a gift for a special lady. Sorry, I have customers. Have a good evening Jax and Detective Taggert."

Detective Taggert rubbed his hands together saying, "Corinthos, you are going down this time."

Mac shook his head. "Taggert, you get the information from Smythe's before you do anything. This has to be done by the book."

"Jax, what does Brenda think of all this? I know she still considers herself a friend to Sonny."

"Mac, Brenda is to know nothing about this. She does not know about the last two gifts nor does she know about Cleary. I do not want her to be told anything about this."

"Jax, I do not think that is wise. She needs to be on the look-out and the more information she has the better she can protect herself."

"Mac, she is four months pregnant and does not need to be frightened or deal with the stress of this. Besides she won't need protecting once Corinthos is behind bars."

"Amen to that," responded the detective.

Brenda then entered the restaurant and Jax joined her for dinner. They spent the rest of the evening together as if the rest of the world did not exist. Jax thoughts to himself that it would all be over soon and Sonny Corinthos would be out of their lives permanently.

Wednesday, April 30, 1997
The Jacks' Residence -- 8:30am

Brenda had packed for her overnight stay with the Cerullos. Since Jax would be tied up all day with work and she would be in Bensonhurst, Brenda had given Corrine the day off. Much to Jax's dismay, Brenda had also given Virgil the day off. She was taking the train to Bensonhurst and she was going to drive herself to the train station. Brenda looked at the time and quickly got into the shower.

Jax heard Patrick arrive for work and met him in the driveway. They then walked to the side of the house so that Brenda could not see them from the bedroom window. "Mr. Cleary, your services are no longer required here. Leave the property at once and do not return unless you wish to be charged with trespassing."

"Sir, I do not understand."

"Understand this, Mr. Cleary. I do not employ moles of Sonny Corinthos."

"I do not know what you are speaking of, Sir."

"Do not waste my time with the Corinthos creed of deceit. Get off my property now and give your boss a message for me. Tell him I warned him and he will now pay the price."

As he watched Patrick Cleary drive off the property, Jax entered the house and went upstairs to see Brenda.

"Are we all ready for our shopping spree?"

"Yes, you will be a much poorer man this evening."

"I know I will be a much lonelier man this evening. I hate the idea of you spending the night away from me."

"We will make up for lost time when I get back. Now, you need to get to your board meeting."

"Right. Good-bye my loves." He kissed Brenda's abdomen and then kissed Brenda. "Be careful. I love you both."

"We love you. Good-bye Daddy."

The Charles Street Foundation -- 11:00am

The board meeting was in progress when the phone rang at the office. Keesha was working on the grant applications when she answered the phone.

"Charles Street Foundation. Can I help you?"

"Hi, Keesha. It's Brenda."

"How are you, Brenda?"

"I am fine. I am trying to reach Jax."

"Oh, he is the middle of the board meeting. If it's an emergency, I will interrupt."

"No emergency. Can you get him a message for me?"

"I am leaving in a few minutes for class, but I can leave him the message."

"Great. Tell him Brooke and Lois have come down with the flu so I am not going to Bensonhurst for the night."

"Sure Brenda. I will leave the message for him on the desk. Talk to you soon. Good-bye."

Sonny's Penthouse -- 1:00pm

Jason had left for New Haven earlier and Sonny had just finished a call from Patrick Cleary. Sonny was fuming. Now Brenda had no protection. Jax had no clue as to what was going on. There was a knock at the door and Sonny opened the door to find Detective Taggert outside.

"Just what I need today, a visit from Kojak."

"Corinthos, I would watch my attitude since we are going to be spending so much time together."

"What are you talking about Taggert?"

"Corinthos, you are under arrest."

"Get real, Taggert. Don't you know the penalty for false arrest and harassment."

"Not as well as you will know the penalty for stalking."

"What the hell are you talking about?"

"Mr. Corinthos, you are under arrest for the stalking of Brenda Barrett Jacks. You have the right to remain silent, anything you say can and will be used against you. You have the right to an attorney. Should you be unable to afford one, one will be appointed for you. Do you understand the rights I have just read to you?"

"Taggert you have completely lost your marbles. My attorney will have me out in fifteen minutes and then you and entire Port Charles Police Department will be sued for everything you are worth."

"Tell it to the judge, Corinthos. We are going downtown."

The Charles Street Foundation -- 2:00pm

Miranda arrived just as the board meeting was about to adjourn. She sat down at the desk and noticed the message to Jax from Brenda. Miranda cursed to herself. She had big plans for this evening. She had overheard Jax and Justus speaking yesterday about Brenda's overnight trip to Bensonhurst and Miranda planned to take the opportunity to spend some time with Jax. Miranda decided Brenda was not going to disturb her plans so she tore up the message and threw it in the trash can.

The board meeting adjourned and Jax walked over to Miranda's desk and asked for his messages. Miranda decides to not waste the opportunity. "Jax, I need a favor from you."

"What is it?"

"Well, it's about the divorce settlement money you gave me. I really need some advice on how to invest it and I was wondering if you could go over some things with me."

"Miranda, I can give you the names of some very capable investment advisors that can help you."

"Jax, you know I do not trust people I do not know. Couldn't you just give a little bit of time?"

"All right, Miranda. When do you want to do this?"

"Well, tonight is the only night this week I am not working at the Outback so I thought we could have dinner and talk about the investment options."

"Miranda, I do not know about tonight."

"Well, if you and Brenda have plans then we can try to do it some other time."

"No, we have no plans. Okay. I have some things to take care of this afternoon so why don't we meet at the Outback at 8:00pm."

"That's great. Thanks, Jax."

The phone then rang and Miranda heard Mac's voice on the other end. Mac asked to speak to Jax and Miranda handed him the phone.

"Hello, Mac."

"Jax, we have Sonny Corinthos in custody. The records show that he purchased a bracelet yesterday morning that matched the one that Brenda received yesterday afternoon. Can you come down to the station?"

"I am on my way. Thank you very much."

"Miranda. I have to run. I will see you this evening."

Police Headquarters -- 3:00pm

Jax was in Mac's office when Detective Taggert came into the office. "Corinthos is still pleading innocence. Patrick Cleary is on his way in now for questioning."

Jax shook his head. "What could Sonny possibly say to make him appear innocent?"

"He said he picked up the bracelet for Jason Morgan to give the Commissioner's niece. He claimed the bracelet he received from Smythe's yesterday is in New Haven now."

"Detective Taggert, have you tried to reach Mr. Morgan?"

"Yes, Mac but we can't find him or your niece right now."

"Bring Corinthos to me right now, Taggert."

A few moments later, Sonny entered the office. "Mac, I can't believe you let this guy talk you into bringing these trumped up charges against me."

"Corinthos, I told you to stay away from my wife and you refused. The law will take care of you now."

"Sonny, we do have such a thing here as mounting evidence. This report details the bracelet purchase, the employment of Patrick Cleary by SC Corporation and the registration of a vehicle to SC Corporation."

"Mac, I will admit to having Patrick Cleary on my payroll as well as owning the vehicle but that is as far as it goes. I sent no gifts or notes nor made any phone calls. I am not stalking Brenda."

"Sonny, save your breath. You were after my wife."

"Listen to me, someone is after her and now you have gotten rid of the only protection she had. She needs a bodyguard, Jax. She is in grave danger."

"She is not in danger as long as you remain behind bars."

"That is enough you two. Sonny, I am going to have to keep you. I don't think we can get a judge until morning for an arraignment so you will have to spend the night in jail."

"Mac, you have got to be kidding."

"I am sorry Sonny but there is considerable evidence here."

"Listen Jaxxy boy, you are going to regret this. If anything happens to your wife, it will be on your hands."

The Jacks' Residence -- 4:00pm

Brenda was awakened from her nap by the sound of the phone. "Hello."

"I am trying to reach Brenda Jacks, please."

"This is she. How can I help you?"

"This is Frankie Molino, ma'am. I am an associate of Joseph Sodaro who drives for Mr. Corinthos. Joseph asked that I call you."

"What is the problem, Mr. Molino?"

"It is Mr. Corinthos, ma'am. There has been an accident and Mr. Corinthos is seriously injured."

"Where are you?"

"We are at warehouse 39 on the docks. Please hurry. I do not know how much longer he can hang on."

Brenda raced down the stairs and heads to the docks. Harry Silver nodded his head as his associate put down the phone.

Warehouse 39 -- 5:00pm

Brenda raced to the docks looking for Sonny. She saw someone pacing in front of the warehouse. As she approached him, he turned toward her.

"Are you Mrs. Jacks?"

"Yes."

"Hello, I am Frankie Molino. Come with me quickly. Mr. Corinthos is in the warehouse. He won't let us call the ambulance."

Brenda followed him into the warehouse and as soon as she entered the door, she is knocked out from behind. She is then carried to a small office in the warehouse and left there by Harry as he locked the door behind him.

The Outback -- 8:00pm

Miranda and Jax were having dinner as Felicia watched them curiously. Miranda noticed Jax's good mood and was optimistic about the evening. She had no idea it was because Sonny Corinthos was behind bars. She and Jax spent the evening discussing literature and places of the world.

After dinner, Miranda asked Jax to follow her up to the apartment so she could show him the investment materials she had received. Jax looked them over as they enjoyed a nightcap. Jax gave her some advice and then bid her good night.

Port Charles -- 11:45pm

Miranda was in bed thinking about the night she had shared with Jax. At least he was willing to meet her for dinner and he seemed to be happy. She knew he would face fury from Brenda when he returned home this late. She would have to be sure that Brenda knew they had spent the evening together while Brenda sat at home alone.

Sonny was pacing the jail cell. He was trying not to completely fall apart but his claustrophobia was intensifying as the hours passed and he had a long night ahead of him. He vowed as soon as he was released he would discover who had set him up.

Jax was in bed with his arms around Brenda's pillow since he could not have the real thing. He was afraid to call her when he returned from dinner with Miranda due to the lateness of the hour. He figured she would be exhausted from being on her feet all day and spending all their money.

Brenda was still out cold laying on the cot in the locked office. Harry had taken the next step in his plan unaware of Sonny's arrest. Harry was awaiting word from Frankie that the step had been completed.

A note was slipped under the door of Sonny's penthouse as night fell on Port Charles and the haunting of the past continued to unfold.
